5.1 Getting Honest with God About Our Emotions
Have you ever experienced an emotion that you felt you couldn't share with God or any one else around you? Then Season 5 on the Prayers of REST Podcast is for you! To kick off our season of Praying through Hard Emotions, we’re switching seats and I’m actually being interviewed by my friend Jannelle Nevels! Jannelle is the co-host of the Brian and Jannelle morning show on WCRF Moody Radio Cleveland, and she invited me to share with our listeners why we chose to focus on hard emotions this fall season on the podcast. I also share some hard news that caused me to practice what I’m preaching, and take my own hard emotions to God in prayer. Are you excited about this new season? Then text a few friends and start a Prayers of REST prayer group! It’s simple: just invite a few friends, commit to listening to the prayer episode each week, and then share with each other what God is revealing to you in prayer. Pray for each other, encourage each other, and maybe once a month try to meet together for a time of live prayer together. Because we learn how to pray not by reading a book about prayer or listening to a sermon about prayer, but by actually praying together. Until we meet again, may you find rest in God’s loving presence.

SEASON 5 TRAILER: Praying Through Hard Emotions
There's a myth that good Christians shouldn't struggle with hard emotions, that we should always be joyful and at peace. But the truth is that we live in a broken world where bad things happen to good people. We all struggle with hard emotions. That’s exactly why this season on the Prayers of REST podcast we’re Praying Through Hard Emotions. So often we’re embarrassed to admit that we struggle with anger, anxiety, or depression, but when we bring these emotions to God, when we’re honest with Him about the hard things we're facing, that's when He starts working. When was the last time YOU talked with God about the hard emotions you're experiencing? If you’re dealing with guilt, anger, envy, loneliness, or any of dozens of hard emotions, then join us on October 11 as we: Recite God's Goodness Express Our Neediness Seek His Stillness, and Trust His Faithfulness  I promise you that when you place these emotions in God’s hands, He will take what is hard and turn it into something good. That’s the way of our Good Father.  So are you ready? Here we go.

Refresh: How to Pray the News
Are you still wondering how to pray for what you see on the news? How can you discern what God's will is when the situation seems tangled? What's "the right thing" to ask for? In today's episode of Prayers of REST, we're resuming our series Refresh Your Prayer Life, and I'm sharing how to pray through the hard news stories coming up each day. If you'd like a visual reminder of the REST prayer acronym, you can download a free bookmark here.  Also, I mentioned these two resources that help me pray the news:  Mission Network News' PrayerCast The PourOver And lastly, a favor to ask you: if this podcast has been a blessing to you, would you text it to 3 of your friends? Or maybe your women’s ministry leader or pastor. Just tell them one thing you love about it, and encourage them to listen to your favorite episode. Thanks for your help spreading the word!

Wish you could pray for those suffering in Afghanistan but don’t know what to say? Join me for a ten-minute guided prayer based on Hebrews 13:3: “Continue to remember those in prison as of you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.” As always, we use the acronym REST to guide us as we pray God’s Word… Reciting God’s Goodness Expressing Our Neediness Seeking His Stillness, and Trusting God’s Faithfulness Share, save, and keep praying. Refresh: Using Your Nose in Prayer
Have you ever thought of using your nose in prayer? When God gave Moses instructions for building the tabernacle, He included a custom blend of spices to be diffused in God’s courts every day. Just think: every time worshipers came to pray, they smelled this distinct fragrance that would always make them think of God.  Recent scientific research reveals that our sense of smell is closely linked with memory! Just like whipping up a batch of grandma’s cookies brings her face to mind, so connecting a specific smell with our prayer time will also remind us of God’s faithfulness.  So try lighting a scented candle or diffusing an essential oil while your pray. You might just be surprised how you come to treasure the smell of God’s presence in your life. Thanks for listening! If you try this creative prayer idea, I’d love to hear about it! You can leave a review on iTunes, tag me @asheritah on Instagram, or leave me a voice message at prayersofrest.com. Until we meet again, may you rest in God’s loving presence.

Refresh Your Prayer Life: The 3 R's of a Modern Examen
If your prayer life feels like it's stuck in a rut, here's a creative prayer idea that I found in Jennifer Duke Lee's new book and Bible Study: Growing Slow. The 3 R's are Remember, Reflect, and Return. It's like a modern take on the ancient practice of the Examen, but with a focus on Scripture. I’m hoping that this mini-season will help Refresh Your Prayer Life as we head into a new school year. If you try out any of the creative prayer ideas in this mini-season, please let me know! Fruit of the Spirit 12: Season Wrap-Up
This week, we’re wrapping up our season of The Fruit of the Spirit with a conversation with Angie Elkins, a dear friend and the producer of this podcast! We talk about what it looks like to live a fruitful life, sharing personal stories from our own journeys with Jesus, as well as a few stories from listeners like you. And yes, of course, we spend some time praying too! This week Angie prays with me through John 15:5-8, meditating on how the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit all work together to bear much fruit in our lives. As you look back on this summer, do you look a little more like Jesus than you did at the start? If you answered “I think so. Yes, I can see a little (or a lot of) growth!” I would love to hear your story! How is God working the Fruit of His Spirit in you and your family? Did you go through this season with some friends? Go to www.prayersofrest.com and click the microphone on the side of the page to leave me a quick voice message. I want to celebrate with you what God is doing in your life!  If you'd like to hear more from Angie, connect with her at https://www.chatologie.com/. Jesus Sacrificed Everything (Matt 27)
If you feel far from God, unworthy of His love, without Hope, or numb to the gospel, you can take comfort in the reminders in today's episodes. Jesus sacrificed everything, giving up heaven for a time to walk the earth, then suffered and died on the cross for your sins. Allow this scripture to remind your heart of the breadth of His sacrifice, and spur you into selfless service to those around you as well, in reflection of the freedom He has given you. Season 3 TRAILER: Uncovering the Love of Jesus
There's a powerful link between knowing the love of Jesus and being filled with God's presence. Paul gives us a clue when he prays that believers would "have power [...] to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge" (see Ephesians 3:17-19). If you're struggling to overcome sin, if you're anxious about the future, if you're wrestling with a difficult relationship, if you feel lonely or unsure about God's love for you, I hope you tune in to Season 3 of the Prayers of REST podcast. We'll turn our attention to the deep, deep love of Jesus in our new series, starting February 1.  I'll be basing the weekly prayers on my Lent devotional: Uncovering the Love of Jesus. If you'd like to follow along and go even deeper, make sure you order it at uncoveringthelove.com soon so you'll get it in time. And if you’ve been blessed by Prayers of REST, please leave a 5-star rating and review so others can find this podcast too. Thank you for helping spread the word! Bonus 6: Does God care if I pray?? (Eph 1:18-20)
Do you ever wonder what difference prayer makes? Does God really care whether or not we pray? From human experience, we learn that when we pray, we pay attention. We see God working. We become more sensitive to His Spirit’s promptings. And from Scripture, we learn that we can rest in God’s power at work. Does God care if we pray! Yes! Scripture gives a resounding YES! As we wrap up our 6-week Prayers of REST series, we’re joining Paul in his prayer in Ephesians 1:18–20: ...having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know . . . what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places. Bonus 4: When God Seems Silent…
Do you ever feel like your prayers hit the ceiling? Like God is silent in response to your prayerful pleas? What if what we think is God’s silence is actually noise pollution--a cacophony of sounds surrounding us that drowns out His still small voice? This week, we’re exploring the “S” in the REST acronym: “Seek God’s Stillness,” as we pray through Psalm 131. I encourage you to take time each day this week to practice seeking God's stillness, perhaps even listening to this episode multiple times. Though it may be hard at first, being still with God becomes easier with practice, just like any other skill. As we learn to be still, we may discover that what we thought was silence was really God’s soft whispers all along. BONUS 3: Why we don't have to hide from God
While we might try to hide our weaknesses from others, we don't need to hide our needs from God. Not only does He already know them, but He wants us to humbly come to Him and Express Our Neediness. That's the "E" in the REST prayer acronym. And that's what this week's Prayers of REST podcast episode is all about, based on 1 John 5:14-15: This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him. Oh friends, what a gift that our God welcomes us to come to Him just as we are, but never sends us away just as we came. He is a good Father, and we can confidently express our needs to Him. This episode is based on the Prayers of REST Bible study (available on Amazon here) and is made possible by generous listeners like you. Jesus, Don’t You Care? (Mark 4:35-41)
