Pro Corner with Austin Surhoff
By Austin Surhoff
Host Austin Surhoff talks with the highest achieving professionals in sports - athletes, coaches, executives, and more - about their immersion into the world of being a pro.
Being a pro isn't about the money. It's not about the medals. It's about giving yourself over to the relentless pursuit of excellence.
It's not what you do -- it's who you are.

Aaron Peirsol Part Two: Swimming at Texas & Nike Sponsorship
Part One of Austin's conversation with Olympic Gold Medalist & World Record Holder Aaron Peirsol.
Aaron is one of the most dominant swimmers in his events (backstroke) in the history of swimming. In the 2000's, you could count on one hand the number of times he lost a backstroke race in international competition. That level of consistent domination is almost unheard of in the world of sport.
In Part Two, the guys discuss Aaron's time at the University of Texas. It was a shock initially: coming from a unique training group under Dave Salo in California, Aaron had to adjust big time to the Texas heat, the intense training, and the awesome feeling of swimming for something bigger like a close-knit college swim team. They also cover Aaron signing with Nike and going pro after 2 years at Texas.
Estimated episode timeline:
0:00 - Austin introduces the episode
2:00 - Why Texas?
4:30 - How Aaron avoided common pitfalls people fall into in sports
11:30 - Agency to make his own decisions that he developed at a young age
16:30 - Big adjustments to the training at Texas...and the heat!
28:00 - The essential role Kris Kubik played as assistant coach for 3 decades
31:30 - Navigating times where Texas team culture was hurting
44:00 - Going Pro
53:00 - Sponsorship with Nike Swim
1:08:00 - Routines to tune out distractions at the Olympics

Part One of Austin's conversation with Olympic Gold Medalist & World Record Holder Aaron Peirsol.
Aaron is one of the most dominant swimmers in his events (backstroke) in the history of swimming. In the 2000's, you could count on one hand the number of times he lost a backstroke race in international competition. That level of consistent domination is almost unheard of in the world of sport.
In Part One of our conversation, the guys discuss Aaron's career beginnings - his incredible training environment growing up in Southern California, the heroes and mentors he had early in his career, and his big decision to go to college instead of turning pro after winning a silver medal at the 2000 Olympics. That decision required a level of wisdom not usual found in high school kids.

Cal Ripken Jr. Part 2: Playing Through Injury and Changing Positions to Help the Team...plus: the '98 Orioles/Yankees Brawl!
MLB Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr., Part 1: Playing Another 500 Straight Games AFTER Setting the Record...plus: Pickup Basketball Stories!
This week's episode is Part One of our interview with Baltimore Orioles legend, the Iron Man, Cal Ripken Jr.
Cal is an MLB Hall of Famer, and by many counts the greatest shortstop in modern baseball history (don't @ me Jeter fans). He revolutionized the position because of his size (6'5") and ability to hit for power - an anomaly for a position normally populated by smaller players that contribute more with their glove than their bat.
Oh yeah, and there's that consecutive game streak - 2,632 games in a row without a day off. 501 of those games came AFTER he broke Lou Gehrig's record of 2130. How did he continue that level of consistency after reaching what many of us see as a crowning achievement?
In part one of our conversation, we get serious about the streak and the aftermath, and not-so-serious about the legendary pickup basketball games Cal would host during his playing career. He gives a scouting report on who could actually ball on the Orioles and the Ravens, and even NBA players that would stop by.
Estimated Episode Timeline:
- 0:00 - Austin introduces the episode
- 6:00 - The aftermath of breaking Lou Gehrig's legendary consecutive game streak record
- 16:30 - Pickup basketball stories - who could ball on the Orioles and Ravens??
- 24:30 - Why'd he keep his streak going after setting the record?
Tune in next week for Part 2!

This episode covers his career path up to making the major leagues. Part 2 will cover his MLB experience.

Laura Sogar: From National Champion Swimmer to Stand-Up Comedian
"What's you're deal?" (you'll get it when you listen)
This week, Laura Sogar stops by Pro Corner. Laura is an NYC-based stand-up comedian with Now & Then Comedy, and a host of the "She Does Stand Up Too?" podcast.
The conversation begins after a solo intro from Austin. Scroll to 5:40 if you'd like to skip straight to Laura!
As an athlete, Laura swam for Texas, both as a collegiate swimmer and a professional until her retirement after the 2016 Olympic Trials. During her career, Laura was an NCAA champion, US National Champion, World Championships Silver Medalist, and a perennial member of the US National Team.
During her pro swimming career, she also found time to have a full-time job and take improv comedy classes - laying the groundwork to eventually be a stand-up comedian.
.
In the podcast, Laura & Austin discuss:
- What life is like for an up & coming stand-up comedian in New York
- How swimming prepared her for stand-up comedy
- The work ethic she developed swimming for Bluefish Swim Club, one of the most intense club swim teams in the country
- Outdoor comedy is hard -- why?
- Advice for recruited athletes -- culture matters!
- Having the world's best teammates at Texas Improv is fun, and scarier than swimming for Team USA

James Fike: How to Disrupt an Industry & Swim Best Times at Age 39
This week, Fike Swim Founder & University of Texas Swimming & Diving Alum James Fike stops by Pro Corner. James is the first Pro Corner guest from the business side of the professional swimming industry. He's also still swimming, and at 39 years old is still going personal best times.
.
After the solo introduction with Austin, the conversation starts at the 7:43 mark!
.
Fike Swim is one of the swimming industries disruptive young companies. On the product side, the company's motto of "Swim Different" is channeled through training tools like the Brick kickboard that aim to improve on designs assumed to be the "norm."
.
On the side of athlete sponsorship, Fike Swim finds ways to help their sponsored athletes like Aly Tetzloff & Maddy Banic grow their brand (along with putting some money in the pocket) by collaborating with them to design signature suits - exactly like Nike or Adidas designing signature shoes for basketball players.
.
In the podcast, the guys discuss:
- How to hit personal bests at 39 years old
- Founding Fike Swim after trying out "corporate America" and wanting to strike out on his own
- Fike Swim's disruptive approach to sponsoring their athletes
- The collaborative process behind designing Fike Swim athletes' signature suits
- What makes a program like Texas Swimming & Diving Special
- The process of creating a successful product like the Brick kickboard - from inventing the design, to negotiating with the Chinese factories, all the way to marketing the finished product
- Nutrition's role in his continued swimming improvement

Jason Lezak: Coaching Himself to Gold as an Athlete & Building a Champion as a GM
For a very special 10th episode of the podcast, 4x Olympian & the GM of the ISL Champion Cali Condors Jason Lezak stops by Pro Corner (4:37).
.
Jason is one of the greatest sprinters in history - a 4-time Olympic Gold Medalist, a World Record Holder, and still to this day the owner of the fastest relay split in the history of swimming - 46.0, which he performed to win the famous 2008 4x100 freestyle relay at the Beijing Olympics.
.
The two most notable facets of Jason's accomplishments are that he coached himself for the last six years of his career - from 2006 to 2012 - making two Olympic teams in that time, and that he was 32 years old when he reached his apex in 2008. Both fly in the face of common swimming wisdom. By doing what he did, Jason showed a whole generation of swimmers that you can pave your own path to your goals, and there's never an expiration date on improvement.
.
Now, Jason is the GM of the ISL's Cali Condors. This episode was recorded mid-season, and since we recorded, the Condors went on to win the 2020 ISL Championship. He is now a champion in the pool and out of the pool.
.
In the episode, the guys discuss:
- His day-to-day role as GM of the Condors
- How he built an eventual champion the right way
- The shifting professional swimming landscape
- The impact of seeing the 1984 Olympics in person on his own dreams
- How he improved and refocused his goals after each Olympic team he made
- A rocky start to coaching himself, and the improvements he had to make to his training
- Choosing to compete at the Maccabiah Games in 2009, and seeing the impact he had on the next generation of Jewish athletes

Madisyn Cox: Using the Mind to Conquer Adversity & Win Gold
In the intro: a reminder from Austin about the upcoming Pro Corner Patreon Page, launching December 2nd. He also reveals a live show with Madisyn scheduled for next week - keep an eye out for the exact day and time being announced very soon!
If you wanna skip the intro, scroll to timestamp 5:52!
Today's Guest: Texas Pro & World Championships Gold Medalist Madisyn Cox stops by Pro Corner to talk about her life as a professional swimmer so far. Overcoming setbacks has been Madisyn's most important skill she developed these last few years. She has done so in stunning fashion, and has become one of America's best Individual Medley swimmers.
In 2016, she experienced the deep disappointment of narrowly missing the Olympic team. She used that to fuel her best year of swimming ever - all the way to scoring an individual Bronze in the 200 IM and a Gold in the 4x200 freestyle relay at the 2017 World Championships. She discusses the incredible joy she felt when she got her hand on the wall to win bronze, and everything she did to prepare herself for that moment. Hint: hard work matters, but the mind matters the most.
In 2018, she tested positive for a banned substance, and for months had to navigate the process of finding out what tainted substance had triggered the positive & mounting an appeal. She was vindicated when an independent court of sport supported with her case that she had unknowingly taken tainted vitamins. What got her through this harrowing time? As she puts it, she never wavered on this mantra: "I did not do anything wrong. I'm not a cheater." Easy to say, harder to believe about yourself in hard times. Once again, the mind matters the most.
Madisyn also discusses:
- Her powerful use of visualization techniques (google images is a big help)
- Her income as a professional athlete, including a sponsorship deal with Arena
- Mentors that showed her how to be a pro
- The importance of consistency and family in her success.
