187 Relieve Neck & Shoulder Tension (Within Minutes)
One of the most common requests I've heard from teaching thousands of yoga classes is "how do i get rid of this tension in my neck and shoulders." Part of the issue is that the upper neck and shoulders are one of the most common areas of tension for everyone. General stress plus long days on devices can lead to chronic tension and stress in the muscles of these areas.  In this video I'll help you identify the causes of the tension in your upper back, neck and shoulders and show you simple powerful ways to relieve tension.  These are techniques I teach in classes in the Quietmind Yoga Membership at http://www.quietmind.yoga Watch the video for this episode HERE Get the free Essential Pose Guide at http://www.quietmind.yoga/poseguide Quietmind Yoga Membership: http://www.quietmind.yoga  My Other Podcasts - Yoga Teacher Training & Quietmind Astrology: http://www.quietmind.yoga/podcasts  Instagram http://www.instagram.com/quietmind.yoga  Facebook http://www.facebook.com/groups/quietmindcommunity         Yoga Teacher Training http://www.quietmind.yoga/ytt     Free Newsletter https://www.quietmind.yoga/newsletter     Keywords: Yoga Classes, Yoga Practice, Hatha, Vinyasa, Yin, Gentle, Flow, Jeremy Devens Full Classes, Practices, Mindfulness, Upper Back Stretches, Neck Stretches, Neck pain

157 Yogic Breathing - The Most Important Part Of Yoga Practice
Today I share a simple 20 minute meditation on the most important part of yoga practice: yogic breathing. This is great for beginners or anyone who wants to deepen the fundamentals of their practice. Yogic breathing may seem really simple - and it is - but It can have profound benefits. The average person breathes 12-20 breaths a minute. These are often shallow and emphasize the upper lungs. Breathing that way creates a Sympathetic Nervous System response - a stress response. Just by how you breathe! With yogic breathing we slow this down and breathe deeper into the lower belly using the diaphragm. As a former singer I learned this is where the power to sustain your breath comes from. This slower, deeper belly breathing also creates a Parasympathetic Nervous System response - a rest and relax response - which was very helpful to come back to throughout the week Ive had with power outages, water being shut off and food shortages here in Texas. I share more about that here and on the Quietmind Astrology podcast (link below). Enjoy this podcast? Leave a review in Apple Podcasts or send me a message on Instagram. 156 Hatha Yoga To Deepen Your Relationship To Your Practice
Join the free Quietmind Yoga Teacher Training info session live on Zoom at http://www.quietmind.yoga/ytt One of my teachers would say "there is only one relationship: the relationship between you and source (god, universe, god of your understanding)" and all of our relationships are reflections of that. 153 Gentle Yoga For The Parasympathetic Nervous System - Rest And Reset
The source texts of yoga teach "stiruha sukha asana" to describe the postures. In each pose and in everything we do we can work towards finding a balance of effort and ease. We can apply this to the nervous system too -- there are times when we are more active and times where we are more at rest. Too much of either will create issues and imbalances. Today's class helps you activate the rest, digest and reset mode of your nervous system.  Props recommended: Bolster, Blanket, 2 Blocks, Sandbag Access this class + 200 on-demand video classes + SIX live weekly Zoom classes in the Quietmind Yoga Membership at http://www.quietmind.yoga -- for a limited time join at the reduced price of $22/mo and access unlimited classes in all styles of yoga, for all levels from 5 minutes to 60 minutes. 147 Hatha Flow To Balance Vata Dosha (Improve Digestion, Mental Clarity and Reduce Anxiety)
Mindful New Year is now OPEN for enrollment! Sign up at http://www.mindfulnewyear.com and join us live to review 2020, plan 2021 and apply the best teachings of Yoga, Ayurveda & Vedic Astrology to your daily habits and new years intentions.  Vata dosha represents all things to do with movement, change, irregularity, roughness and dryness - like the wind and air elements it represents. This dosha becomes dominant in the Fall season though can become dominant in any of us based on our lifestyle and diet choices. In excess you may experience anxiety, worry, fear, dry skin, cold limbs, trouble sleeping, digestive issues and overwhelm. Balanced you may experience creativity, inspiration, clarity, a sense of ease, lightness and flexibility in your day to day life. This class will teach you more about how to increase or decrease vata dosha in your yoga practice. As Ayurveda teaches anything can be a poison or a medicine and Vata dosha is just one of many variables we can work with in yoga and in our daily lives.  Yoga For Beginners Course: http://www.quietmind.yoga Watch this class on YouTube at http://www.quietmind.yoga/youtube Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jeremy.quietmind/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/quietmindcommunity/ Quietmind Yoga Podcast: https://www.quietmind.yoga/podcasts Quietmind Astrology Podcast: https://www.quietmind.yoga/podcasts Yoga Teacher Training Podcast: https://www.quietmind.yoga/podcasts Thrive Teaching Online Podcast: http://www.thriveteachingonline.com Thanks for listening! 132: Gentle Yoga For Back Strength & Twists + How To Avoid Overstretching Injuries
The new Yoga For Beginners online course is available now at http://www.quietmind.yoga - this is made for total beginners but full of insights including things that took me 8 years of practicing to learn, so this is great for all levels to brush up on the fundamentals. It includes daily practices in the styles I teach on this podcast. All recorded for you to watch anytime on any device. All on video! Today's class addresses one of the most important things I teach - how to develop both strength and flexibility in your practice to prevent imbalances. I had the common misconception for years that if I did strength training my muscles would get shorter and less flexible - I now know that is 100% not true! I'll share more about why in the intro, and how to apply this in the practice. This is a great, well rounded practice that is both gentle and strength building - not the most common combination! 131: Hatha Yoga For SI Joint And Low Back Pain
The Yoga For Beginners course is now available at http://www.quietmind.yoga - This is a perfect place for beginners to start but great for experienced students too - I share things I didn't learn until 8 years into my practice that would have saved me a lot of confusion, shoulder pain and low back pain.  And that is the topic of today's class. This is a Hatha Yoga practice to address tension around the sacroiliac joint and low back pain in general. 90% of all people will experience low back pain in their life, and I'm guessing you have as well. I have found some things that are really helpful for low back pain and I share them in this practice. Enjoy! Also - The Fall Quietmind Yoga Teacher Training is just weeks away. 129: Guided Meditation for Non-Grasping (Aparigraha / The 8 Limbs of Yoga)
New mentorship & training for Yoga Teachers: Thrive Teaching Online is open now! Learn more and watch the free training at http://www.quietmind.yoga/6steps Want to learn more about the core philosophy of yoga? Join the Yoga Book Club where we are studying the core text of yoga: the Yoga Sutra at http://www.yogabookclub.com One of my teachers would say "the way to measure your yoga progress is not by how flexible you are or how many poses you can do but by how well you can relinquish." How well can you adapt when things go wrong? How soon can you notice if you have reacted to someone else, and choose a new more intentional way to respond? Another one of my teachers would say that "yoga is really about preparing to die --- to let go of any attachments we have in this lifetime."  These teachings are core to the yoga philosophy established between 1750 BCE - 200 CE. Aparigraha is one of the primary practices of healthy non-attachment.  In this meditation I will share ways we can practice this form of non-attachment.  Thank you for listening! 128: Gentle Yoga To Build Strength & Flexibility + Insights From Studying With Jason Crandell
FREE Zoom Workshop: 6 Steps To Turn Your Idea Into An Online Business In The Next 90 Days is happening this week! Register for free at http://www.quietmind.yoga/6steps Today's practice is a gentle yoga class suitable for all levels of experience, including beginners. This was recorded many months ago after I completed a weekend training with Jason Crandell from San Francisco. That training validated a lot of my recent discoveries in my own practice, and added some insights from Jason's work with sports medicine doctors. I also share my own experience of coming to similar conclusions when my teachers pointed out that my biggest weakness was my tight hamstrings, and I had the common Yoga misconception that I needed to spend more time stretching my hamstrings. What I eventually learned was I actually needed to be strengthening my hamstrings as that would allow them to become more flexible. I sure how to apply this to your practice in today's episode. Live Zoom classes every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday at http://www.quietmind.yoga/classes Keep in touch + get special exclusive offers, discounts and giveaways by downloading any of my free guides at http://www.quietmind.yoga Recommended (not required) props: 2 Blocks, 1 Blanket Thanks for listening! 127: Power Vinyasa With Focus On IT Band And Side Body
Did you know that most yoga emphasized only one plane of motion? Most teachers have little to no training in planes of motion and are not aware of the imbalances they are creating in their students. This can lead to: Tight hips Low back pain Tight IT band A weak core Shoulder tension Wrist pain And all of that can be reduced by making sure to include all planes of motion in your practice. The sagittal (forward folds and backbends), transverse (twists) and frontal (the sides of the body - as emphasized in today's practice). This is a key part of my Quietmind Yoga Teacher Trainings. Our current class of students is graduating soon but the next Teacher Training will be opening soon! More updates on that in the weeks ahead. This week I will be announcing something really cool for current yoga teachers who want to grow their online business. 126: Yin Yoga For The Whole Body To Learn The Koshas (Sheaths of Awareness)
Yoga philosophy has stood the test of time for over 3000 years. One of the deeper aspects of yoga philosophy is the Panchamaya Kosha model. This mean “5 sheaths of awareness.” More literally, “5 sheaths of illusions.” If you've been following this podcast for a while, you've heard me talk a lot about the physical body. Yoga for low back pain, yoga for the shoulders, the neck, the core. These are all examples of the anamaya kosha - the physical body - the first sheath of awareness. One of my teachers would say that most people in their life will not go beyond awareness of the physical body. As yogis a lot of our focus is beyond the physical body. How a pose feels. How your breath feels. The state of your mind. There are four koshas beyond the physical body, and I will be sharing more this Thursday at 9:30 AM Central standard time on zoom. You can join us at http://www.quietmind.yoga/classes For today this is a Yin class, always among my most popular classes, so you have time to hold poses and really bring awareness into your experience of your physical body. The more we bring awareness to these sheaths of awareness, the less we identify with them, and the more we identify with the pure awareness within us that has the choice to choose how to respond to any circumstance. 124: Hatha Flow & Meditation To Practice The 5th Limb of Yoga (Pratiyahara)
Take a moment today to sign the petition at justiceforbigfloyd.com As millions mourn and process the grief of generations of injustice, I will do my best to continue to share helpful, healing practices I have learned from yoga and related teachings. Personally I will continue to support black rights and police reform and listen to voices of people who are living through these challenges for how I may continue to best offer support.  I have continued to come back to yoga and meditation for 14+ years now because it just works. These teachings have stood the test of time and countless ups and downs of history for 3000+ years, and I'm incredibly grateful that we have access to them today. Today's practice is continuing to share from the Yoga Sutra - the 2000 year old teachings of yoga - with the practice of bringing attention back inward to recenter and reconnect to whats most important to you, so that the actions you take in the rest of your day come from that place. I hope you find this helpful. 119 Hatha For Whole Body Strength, Flexibility and Balance
One of my favorite quotes comes from Thich Naht Hanh, a Vietnamese monk who won the Nobel Peace Prize. He would teach meditation by teaching to simply notice that you are breathing. "Breathing in, I notice I am breathing in. Breathing out, I notice I am breathing out." It's so simple, yet I have found it so profound. It was helpful for me to hear this reminder on my morning walk the other day, and I hope it is helpful for you as well. Today's practice is a similarly simple, straightforward practice that is well rounded and covers the essentials of Hatha practice in strength, balance and flexibility.  Want to join me live for class? I now have THREE options! All on Zoom at this same link at 9:30am CST. By donation. Can't be there live? 113: Meditation For Grounding and Centering (Great For Beginners)
I hope you are well and safe. Today’s episode is a grounding and centering practice to support you in regulating your nervous system during this uncertain time we are all experiencing with the unfortunate spread of Covid-19. From an Ayurvedic perspective we are experiencing a significant Vata dosha imbalance (change, fear, anxiety) and can balance this out by doing things that increase the Kapha dosha (earth, grounding, security) such as creating routines, eating grounding foods and doing practices like this. I believe we can all benefit from having the training and skills to regulate our nervous systems, especially in challenging, uncertain times. I hope this practice supports you in doing that so you can show up as a loving presence for others in your life. If you’d like to learn more about 3 of my favorite and most helpful yoga tips, check out my free online workshop: 3 Mindset Shifts to Build Confidence in Teaching Yoga at http://www.quietmind.yoga/confidence. This also includes a preview of the Quietmind Yoga Teacher Training - which is all online and currently open for enrollment. 109 Gentle Yoga For Mindfulness In Relationships - Whole Body Practice
Today's practice is about creating mindfulness in relationships - in my experience that always starts with relationship to self and, today, relationship to practices. How do we respond when some days we're more flexible, and some days we're just not feeling it? Isn't it interesting how the poses don't change much, but the practice continues to be new and interesting every time? What is changing? 108: Hatha Yoga For Relationships, Self Awareness And Working With Samskaras - 2 Blocks, 1 Blanket
In today's episode I share about one of the most effective tools of Yoga Philosophy - Samskaras - limiting beliefs and mental conditioning that happens from negative experiences, trauma and accumulated stress of just being a human being - which is hard work sometimes! This is a concept that I have come back to many times over the years and have found that many modern approaches to therapy and coaching are derivations of working with Samskaras - a concept that has stood the test of time over 2000 years. This practice is great for developing awareness around these patterns in yourself, and how they may play out in relationships, as we approach Valentines Day here in the U.S. Keep in Touch: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jeremydevens Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jeremy.quietmind.yoga/ Website: http://www.quietmind.yoga Enjoying this podcast? 107: Beginners Vinyasa For Low Back Pain - Strength, Flexibility And Balance
Despite having great teachers, being dedicated and consistent in my practice I still found myself getting low back pain. After trying many stretching techniques and finding temporary relief, I realized that something needed to change about how I practice yoga. I learned physical therapy techniques, kinesiology and biomechanics and discovered some approaches I could add to my yoga practice that have since eliminated the back pain issues I used to have. I certainly don't have all of the answers, and I would be cautious of anyone who claims they do, but I have definitely found some things that are helpful for me and have been helpful for students I work with. Rather than having any one answer, pose or sequence, I find it more valuable to cultivate a sense of self - inquiry. A good place to look is the Limbo-Pelvic Hip Complex -  the area between the belly button and knees - these are major factors in back pain, but exactly which muscles or movements may be causing or relieving the back pain are going to be unique for you and for everyone else. In today's practice I'll share some of the things I've found most helpful, so you can practice your own self inquiry and find what works best for you. Side note: I had an amazing Mindful New Year retreat and that took all of my focus for a while. I also had a technical issue where my iCloud files (all my podcast files) disappeared for a while (!). Thankfully I got them all back and will be posting extra episodes over the next few days so we're back on track with this season (Season 8) of the podcast.  "Rebecca💜" who left a review on the Quietmind Astrology podcast - please reach out for your free access to Mindful New Year Online! 105: Yin Yoga & Singing Bowls For Back And Hips To Embody Expansion And Contraction
If you're new to this podcast, welcome! My name is Jeremy Devens. I've been teaching yoga in Austin, TX since 2011. I created this podcast to offer free weekly yoga classes for you to practice anywhere, anytime. I teach several styles of yoga, but they're all to serve two purposes: to activate either the sympathetic nervous system (active, engaged, focused part of yourself) - in Hatha and Vinyasa Yoga -  or the parasympathetic nervous system (rest, digest, relax part of yourself) - in Restorative, Yin, Gentle Yoga, Tibetan Singing Bowls and Meditation.  This podcast is supported by listeners like you (link below to become a supporter), occasional sponsors, and online courses that I offer. My next course if called Mindful New Year and helps you apply yoga, Ayurveda and Vedic astrology to planning your whole year ahead. You can learn more at http://www.mindfulnewyear.com I also host two other podcasts and a youtube channel, you can learn about them at http://www.quietmind.yoga If you enjoy this podcast leave an honest review on Apple Podcast, it only takes a minute and significantly helps new people find the podcast.  If you have any questions, email me at jeremy@quietmind.yoga Thank you for listening! 104 Gentle Yoga To Clear Your Mind And Set Intentions For The New Year
In last week’s episode I shared how to approach your practice as a place of refuge.  Today I share how to move from that refuge into the year ahead. To hear the still, quiet voice of intuition that always knows your next right step. Modern technology is part of "the distraction economy." It aims to keep us scrolling through social media - looking outside ourselves. Yoga does the opposite. It's about your most valuable asset - your attention - and choosing how to direct it.  When you become curious about where your attention goes, insights can arise. New neural pathways can form. Opportunities become clear. This is fertile soil to plant seeds of intention for the new year. Building on everything I've shared about polarities this season, consider this. When you have an intention and imagine moving in that direction, what do you feel? Do you feel contraction or expansion? Do you feel growth or stagnation?  If there is expansion - is there a next step that you feel called towards? If you feel contraction - does this feel out of alignment? Or is there a limiting belief at play?  The new year offers a fresh start. A reminder of impermanence - another year has passed. A decade, in this case. Who have you become? Who are you becoming? Who will you be a year from now, reflecting back on this?  These are questions to live, rather than question to answer. To pause when you notice the spiritual lens flares of synchronicity. To meet both contraction and expansion with curiosity. Also with the wisdom of perspective. To be bold and take chances when the insight is vivid and the inner voice is clear. To be like a tree that stops branching out when the inner voice says "no." If you feel inspired you might write out your goals - you might make a plan - you might throw it out. Whatever you choose to do, trust that it is the right thing to do.  It today's practice I will share ways to notice where you direct your attention. To encourage you to find your own definition of alignment. To let inspiration move you. To trust your intuition when it says to be still.  ----------------------------------------------------------- Want to put this into practice on retreat? 103 Slow Flow Vinyasa For Feeling Supported - Emphasis On Back
Last week I shared ways to embody yin qualities in the often more yang practice of Hatha yoga. Today I explore the question of "how can you feel supported and able to relax while being strong and active?" Progressing now into a slow flow Vinyasa practice.  There is a Buddhist concept of "taking refuge." This means finding things that are reliable sources of support, perspective and refuge. Yoga practice can be that.  Buddhism teaches 3 refuges: dhamma (the path), buddha (awakening) and sangha (peer support).  I take this to mean that when I am looking for perspective, insight or meaning it’s helpful to look within. To cultivate self awareness (the refuge of the buddha within). To continue on my path (dharma) and do the practices and work that I know are important to me. To receive support and guidance from others on a similar path (sangha).  My intention as a teacher is to offer support and guidance like so many generous teachers have before me. To offer a yoga practices that are a reliable source of refuge from the ups and downs of every day life. To help make sense of it all and give perspective.  Often taking refuge seems to mean slowing down. But what about those times when we have too much energy for that? Can taking refuge be an active and engaged practice?  What would a yoga practice look like that embraced that paradox? I'll share my take in today's practice and, as always, I encourage you to find your own definition.  The practices of this season (7) have explored polarities and paradoxes. I've shared ways to assess imbalances and return to your center. As this year comes to a close, I encourage you to find time take refuge in your practice. To assess what still may be a bit out of balance - rather than aiming to 'fix' it, being curious. Letting your practice be a place without judgment, shame or expectations.  Letting your practice be a place to take refuge now and throughout the year ahead.  Having found that place of inner refuge, next week I will share a practice to bring closure to the year.  Props: 2 Blocks, Blanket Tags: Crow, Headstand, Locust, Core Strengthening) ----------------------------------------------------------- One way to practice all 3 refuges is on retreat. 102 Hatha Yoga For Embodying The Yin Aspects Of Movement, Change And Softness
Last week I shared how deep rest is as important as focused work. I shared ways to find both in your practice and your daily schedule. In today's episode I share ways to embody the yin aspects of practice. Sukha. Ease. Softness. Change. Receptivity. These are in contrast to the strong ujayi breath and bandhas of 2 weeks ago. My intention is to help us move towards the end of 2019 open and receptive to new possibilities.  As always we are exploring opposites in our practice. The terms I have come back to the most over the years are yin & yang, stirha & sukha, and masculine & feminine. It's important to note that I don't mean man and woman - but I'm pointing to qualities within everyone.  In general, western culture rewards and reinforces the masculine / yang / stirha qualities. This can lead to difficulty in knowing how to navigate the sukha qualities in our practice and in our lives. As I shared last week, this was a major challenge for my friend and for me. It's easy to get caught in the cycle of always trying to DO more. To become uncomfortable with uncertainty, change, the unknown, and making time to BE.  Yoga turns that upside down by being goalless, non-competitive and always evolving. Though, it is so malleable that it can become exactly the opposite. As always, the art is in making space for both. Can your yoga practice be both structured and spontaneous? What would that look like? Could there be room for discovery and curiosity, while also being precise and firm? Is it even correct to say that effort & ease, yin & yang, masculine & feminine are opposites? Or are they two parts of the same thing? Life is full of contradictions and paradoxes, and yoga is a practice where we get to embody and explore them.  The word Hatha itself means "force" - so to embody softness in a Hatha practice itself is a paradox. How does it - how could it - make sense?  My intention in today's practice is that you begin to explore these paradoxes. In your practice and throughout your week. Are you being too yielding where more effort is appropriate? Are you to forceful when slowing down would be the way to speed things up?  In next week’s episode I will how to build on this approach - to have our yoga practice be the support we often need.  Props: 2 Blocks, 1 Blanket ----------------------------------------------------------- Want to apply this to your year ahead? 101 Gentle Yoga For Deep Rest, Hamstring And Shoulder Opening
A few years ago I went to a Vipassana meditation retreat. There was minimal food. No talking. No yoga. Only Vipassana (“insight meditation”) - 10 hours a day for 10 days.  I have always loved seated meditation. It was my first mindfulness practice and it has been the one I come back to the most. It helps me center, gain perspective, clear my mind and refocus. This retreat heightened and solidified these aspects of my practice. It also challenged me. It brought awareness to unconscious aspects of my mind and body. Why did my attention drift so often at specific points in the practice - like the body scan of my stomach? This happened the first 5 days in a row. What was I unwilling to address? Could I make space for that? Also... With nothing else to distract me, why was I now thinking so much about meal times? By the middle of the week I had two realizations... One: If I meditated near the door I could get to dinner early and get one of the rare dinner mints before they ran out. Two: as much as I love seated meditation, I realized yoga is my primary meditation practice. I needed to move my body. (Too many dinner mints?) Fortunate for me, I had a private room at this retreat and I could 'sneak in some yoga' between meditations. After doing this Day 6 was my most engaged, embodied and mindful day of practice yet. The rest of the week flew by.  Since then I have viewed my practice as a 'moving meditation.' An opportunity to practice all the things I practice in seated meditation. To find stillness within movement. To land in each posture as it's own seat ('asana') for meditation.  This was what drew me to the practice to begin with, and what I reconnected with on my retreat. Today in your practice I'll offer ways to find your own version of this experience. In the breath. In the subtle energetic anatomy (bandhas). As well as in many familiar postures.  THANK YOU  for helping this podcast grow to reach it’s first 100 episodes. I'm grateful we've reached 30,000+ listens all over the world. It's an honor to get to share these practices that have changed my life.  In next week’s episode we’ll shift gears and start to close out 2019. We'll go from the tapas (strong practice) of today to the saucha (contentment) of deep rest. ----------------------------------------------------------- Want to go on your own retreat? 99 Hatha For Low Back Pain And Awareness Of Pelvic Tilt
In last week’s episode I shared one of my favorite threads of the Yoga Sutra: “mindfulness of opposites.” Today I share one of the most essential pairs of opposites -- anterior and posterior pelvic tilt. If you’ve never heard these words before, I will share exactly what I mean by them in today’s episode. As I’ve shared before, low back pain effects 80% of people, has many common causes, and many ways to address the issue. In general, I aim to find the root of the issue. This may involve strengthening the back as we did in Episode #95. This may involve strengthening the core, as we did in Episode #97. Or it may involve adjusting the tilt of the pelvis as we’ll do in today’s practice. If you’re like me it’s so easy for you to slip into a posterior pelvic tilt when sitting in a chair. Rounded back. Shoulders slumped. Or, if you’re like one of my early teachers you have a ‘swayback’ or an anterior pelvic tilt. Arched back. Bowed spine. At either extreme you are likely to run into issues. As Ayurveda teaches: anything in can be a medicine or a poison, depending on how you use it. My intention today is to help you have more awareness of the tilt of your pelvis and how it effects the rest of your body. This is one of the roots I find in many people struggling with low back pain. The good news is it's one of the simples issues to address. As you move through your practice today, notice the tilt of your pelvis. Notice how this effects the rest of the posture. Notice how it effects your posture throughout the day, after practice. 98 Gentle Yoga For Hamstrings And Back/ When Negativity Arises, Cultivate The Opposite (Pratipaksha Bhavana)
In today's episode I share one of my favorite threads of the Yoga Sutra. Pratipaksha Bhavana: “When negativity arises, cultivate the opposite” or “mindfulness of opposites.” Opposites are the core of everything I teach in yoga. Postures are either active or passive. Moving or still. Strengthening or stretching. Sometimes many of these things at once. Is your low back in pain? Look to the opposite side of the body. A good place to start is the transverse abdominals - the deep core muscles that support the torso are often weak. An issue I didn’t realize I had until years into my practice. Now I know when I’m tense in an area of my body it’s likely due to some sort of imbalance. The imbalance is always unique to the situation and individual - but it’s a good place to start. Resolving the imbalance requires some experimentation. To explore the polarities of strength & flexibility, movement & stillness, active & passive. In short: stihra & sukha. This applies to the mind and emotions too. In my early 20s I struggled with depression. It wasn't until I found out about gratitude journaling that things started to shift. Instead of focusing on what wasn't working, I began to seek out what was working. I tended to be more cynical and judgmental back then. This new practice got me to cultivate the opposite polarity. It wasn't fake or forced either. Each day I found 3 things I felt genuine gratitude for. Soon it got me excited for each day. This lead to me trying things outside of my comfort zone, including my first yoga class. I didn't know about pratipaksha bahavana - or any of these concepts - but it is what got me out of my depression. I can look back now and see I had cultivated a state. Every time I complained, judged, compared and wished I was something I wasn’t. I was cultivating a more depressed state of mind. A more cynical state.  The gratitude practice helped me cultivate the opposite. It was slow. It was small. It didn’t happen in a week, or a month. But over a decade later I am a much different person. I still have cynical and depressed thoughts at times. The difference is now I know I have a choice. I can choose to cultivate that state, or I can choose its opposite. My intention is that this practice reminds you that you always have a choice in your thoughts as well. We all have our lows and our negative thoughts at times, that's okay. If you start to feel stuck, though, this yoga sutra "pratipaksha bhavana" can be a reminder of how to get unstuck. ----------------------------------------------------------- Early Registration closes in 2 WEEKS for Mindful New Year - an online & in person retreat - Jan 17th - Yoga, Ayurveda & Vedic Astrology - Learn more at http://www.mindfulnewyear.com Support Quietmind Yoga - The only weekly yoga practice podcast - and one of the only approaches to yoga that addresses often overlooked issues in yoga practice such as hamstring strengthening, integrating yoga history and philosophy, and maintaining a diverse and evolving practice. 97: Vinyasa To Strengthen Core And Support The Lower Back
This episode is brought to you by Mindful New Year - an online & in person retreat - Jan 17th - Yoga, Ayurveda & Vedic Astrology - Learn more at http://www.mindfulnewyear.com In last week’s episode I shared about how to establish your center, today we strengthen that center. In today's episode I share about low back pain. EIGHTY percent of people in studies have reported experiencing low back pain. This is a massive issue effecting millions of people. There are many effective ways to address this. The first question is, what is low back pain? Often, knowing the issue is half way to solving the issue. The majority of the students I’ve worked with have reported low back pain at one time or another. Often it’s caused by some sort of repetitive stress like working at a desk, driving or being on a device. This gets worsened by slumping on a couch after work then curling up in a fetal position to go to sleep. The issue is keeping the spine in some sort of flexion all day. This results in what you sometimes see in elderly bodies; the dreaded hunchback. There are, of course, many other forms of back pain with endless causes. Today I will address some common causes of repetitive stress from postural patterns. I also address this from an energetic perspective. There is a concept in the Yoga Sutra called "pratipakshi bhavana". This means when something is out of balance, cultivate the opposite. This may have evolved from Ayurveda's “like increases like and opposites bring balance.” So a good place to start with back pain is: do the opposite of the movements causing the issue. This starts with noticing the tilt of the pelvis. Next, noticing flexion and extension in the spine. Next, noticing weaknesses and compensations in the core. There are many possible causes of back. This is what can make it difficult to relieve. But, in general, I teach to address the whole lumbo-pelvic hip complex. This is pretty much all the joints, muscles and connective tissue from the knees to the belly button. Today we'll focus on strengthening the core to support the low back. Again, it’s important to define terms. When I say ‘core’ I don’t mean doing a bunch of sit-ups while I yell at you over blaring pop music. You could actually do that and never use your deep core muscles - and create MORE imbalances. Look at any advanced yogi with a strong core and they rarely have a defined 6 pack. This is because the true core is not the 6 pack muscles. Those are more superficial and called the rectus abdomens. Deeper than that is are muscles more important to supporting the back. Muscles more helpful in spinal stabilization and preventing back pain. Muscles that help with pretty much every active yoga posture. The transverse abdominis. The internal obliques. The psoas. The multifidi. If we want a strong core these are the muscles to strengthen. If we want to support the back, reverse and prevent back pain, these are the muscles to strengthen. In next week’s episode I will share more about the Yoga Sutra I mentioned. I'll share the concept of “pratipaksha bhavana" in a gentle yoga practice. Want to help this podcast grow? 96 Hatha For Improving Balance By Establishing Your Center

Want to help this podcast grow? The best thing you can do is click subscribe and leave an honest review. Have something you'd like to hear in this podcast? Email me at jeremydevens@gmail.com - In last week’s episode I shared how to address deep seated muscular imbalances. In today's episode I share how balance is often misunderstood as needing to arrive at a perfect point between two opposites. As you know from any amount of life experience, things are constantly changing and moving. A core teaching of spiritual traditions is impermanence - you can never swim in the same river twice - you can never be in the same yoga pose twice - who you are now is vastly different than you were 10 years ago, or even just a year ago. What we can find, however, is a sense of center between opposites. Imperfect. Changing. But somewhere towards the center. A place within that is not so effected by swaying left or right, not so easily taken off balance. Without a sense of an internal center everything from the weather to a challenging conversation to bad traffic can control your emotions, your thoughts and your behaviors - like a puppeteer controls a marionette. The lesson of balance, however, is not about defiance, ego or putting up walls by becoming a control freak. This only creates more rigidity. Too much stirha, not enough sukha. Too much effort, not met with ease. We can play at the extremes. We can fall apart, be lazy, make mistakes and break all of our own rules. We can fortify those rules, follow them fervently and do nothing out of order. Ultimately this dance of yin and yang will repeat a million times in a million ways. Moving between these extremes. In yoga philosophy we learn of purusha and prakriti. Spirit and matter. We become aware of this dance energetically in how we interact with ourselves, our practice, each other. We become aware of this dance physically in how we activate and deactivate, strengthen and stretch into progressively advanced postures. Ultimately we become aware that we are neither just yin or yang, but the observer who decides when where and how to apply each, as needed. Sometimes the balance is tipped way off center. Sometimes, though, that’s the most effective way to return to center. In next week’s episode I will put together the strengthening of last week and the centering of this week: specifically - strengthening the core to resolve low back pain. It’s hard to have a center when your back is in pain. Low back pain effects EIGHTY percent of people, and core strengthening is often a dreadful proposition. I’ll share ways I’ve found to work with the core that address the root of the issue, and are actually pretty fun to do (relatively…) - Join the Quietmind Community: The best way to keep in touch is to join the Quietmind Community at http://www.quietmind.yoga - sign up for any of my free downloads to join. 95: Gentle Yoga For Back Tension Release And Back Strengthening
Registration is now OPEN for Mindful New Year - an online & in person retreat - Jan 17th - Yoga, Ayurveda & Vedic Astrology - Learn more at http://www.mindfulnewyear.com In today's episode I discuss ways to release tension in the back and strengthen the back. This is a commonly UNDER trained area for many yoga students, and a commonly under emphasized aspect of yoga practice. Yoga tends to OVER emphasize pushing movements like Chaturanga and updog - which are awesome and important postures - AND it's equally important to balance them out with pulling actions like we'll do in today's class. How did I come to this conclusion? I decided to challenge myself one summer and did vinyasa yoga classes every day for 90 days. A few weeks in I couldn't ignore that my body was not happy with this challenge. This was not a "no pain no gain" situation - this was a "yoga is about developing a relationship with and listening to your body, so hey dude, listen to your body" situation.  I went to a bodyworker I trust who is also a teacher - she assessed my shoulder and asked if I'd been doing a lot of vinyasa recently. This was not the first time she'd seen this. The issue: weak rhomboids, weak lower traps and overactive shoulders and traps. Common yoga thought would be "well, it's tight, so stretch it out to un-tighten it." this is well intentioned, and seems logical, but it's not actual how muscle works, and often makes things worse. The solution was to increase neuromuscular activation. in other words - MORE contraction, not less. More STRENGTHENING - LESS stretching. The strengthening trains deep mind-muscle connection that allows muscles to more fully lengthen because they can more fully contract, and they are less likely to hold tension. Unfortunately, 9 out of 10 vinyasa yoga teachers are not trained to address this - and my well intended 'challenge' to evolved from the simple task of  "attend 90 classes" to address deep seated muscular imbalances that 9 out 10 public yoga classes will not address - and likely aggravate. The solution I found was a new approach to practice that you've likely heard pieces of throughout previous classes on this podcast, but it is a central focus of today's practice. As always: this is a general class and not a 1-1 session, so interpret what I offer in your own unique way - just as I do anytime I entrust a teacher to lead me.  Support Quietmind Yoga:  This is the only weekly yoga practice podcast - with new hour long classes every week - addressing often overlooked issues in yoga practice such as hamstring strengthening, integrating yoga history and philosophy, and maintaining a diverse and evolving practice. 92: Gentle Yoga to Prevent Disease and Reduce Accumulated Heat (Pitta Dosha)
Special announcement coming soon - be the first to know by joining the Quietmind Community at http://www.quietmind.yoga/ Have you ever been burned out, irritable, felt inflammation, heartburn or had rashes on your skin? Or have you ever felt quick to anger, frustration, irritability or annoyance? These are signs of excess heat in the body - what is known in Ayurveda as Pitta Dosha. Today begins Season 7 of the Quietmind Yoga Podcast and we will address the transition from the summer season into the fall by reducing excess heat in the body. Ayurveda teaches that "all diseases start in the transition of the seasons" - so this week is an important time to stay hydrated, well rested and do your practices that help you feel your best. Pitta accumulates in the summer, but it can become excessive any time of year, and this is a practice you can come back to any time you need to regulate the Pitta Dosha in your body.  If you like this podcast, subscribe, leave a review and check out my other podcasts: Quietmind Astrology and the Yoga Teacher Training podcast at http://www.quietmind.yoga/podcasts   Thanks for listening! 86: Gentle Hatha For Immune System Health
Want to, learn everything I have to teach about yoga? Styles, postures, breath work, mudras, mantras, philosophy, history, anatomy, yoga business -all of it is in the Quietmind Yoga Teacher Training. Doors open 9/9/19 and you check it out at http://www.quietmind.yoga/ytt - if you're listening to this after that you can join the waiting list here: http://www.quietmind.yoga/ytt In todays practice we focus on supporting the immune system. The main way we effect the immune system in yoga is through the Prana - the life force / vitality / energy of the body. We effect this primarily with breathing, but also with foods we eat, sunlight, activities. Yoga in general will always help improve this, but today we will focus more directly on that aspect of practice. One of the keys is to take slower deeper breaths rather than quick short breaths, and I'll share why.  If you enjoy todays practice leave a review in apple podcasts or wherever you listen Props suggested: 2 block, 1 blanket Thanks for listening! 84: Hatha For Heart Opening And Back Strengthening
If you're like many people you spend a lot of time in a certain spinal position, often without even realizing.  This causes a specific imbalance that leads to stiff necks, stiff upper backs, low back pain, weak upper body, and eventually even a hunchback posture. This is all very common in our modern device oriented lifestyle in the west, but this is also easy to avoid. I'll share how in today's practice.  Today's episode is brought to by the free self assessment the "10 Core Competencies of Teaching Yoga" at http://www.quietmind.yoga/core10 - use this simple test to get clarity on your practice and what you can do to build confidence in all of the major areas of yoga practice.

83 Gentle Yoga for Fascia Release
Fascia is a band or sheet of connective tissue, primarily collagen, beneath the skin that attaches, stabilizes, encloses and separates muscles and other internal organs.  One way to think of the fascia is like scaffolding in the body. It has a relative strength of steel, yet is viscoelastic and can store and release elastic potential energy.  Under a microscope, fascia looks like countless clear strands moving and adapting as needed. Modern research still has much to learn about fascia. My experience with 10+ years of yoga practice leads me to believe that the fascia plays a major role in flexibility and allowing the body to stretch, strengthen or move.  I believe that after many hours of practicing postures your body adapts to more readily get in and out of those postures. Going from feeling like the pose is difficult, to feeling a sense of lightness in the posture. The fascia "scaffolding" is already there to support optimal posture and alignment. This has yet to be scientifically proven, but it fits with my experience and many people I have asked about their experience with this.  I saw this recently in a friend who had rock climbed for years yet stopped for over a year. After her first day back she felt like she hadn't missed a day. My theory is her fascia had adapted to find the optimal alignment, strength and flexibility for rock climbing after years of practice she didn't become sedentary or do anything to lose that structure, so the fascia "scaffolding" remained in tact. Similarly, if we remain sedentary or repeat poor postural habits, the fascia molds into that shape as well, making the body less flexible and dynamic.  In short, any yoga is likely great for yoga, but yoga that emphasizes slow deep release of tensions and retraining those areas for strength may be best for working with the fascia. Again, we have much to learn and I could be totally wrong about this, but this feels true to my personal experience so far.  Props: 2 Blocks, Bolster, Blanket Tags: Prenatal friendly, Hips, Shoulders, Balance, Meditation, Pranayama, Hamstrings, Whole Body Today's episode is Brough to you by the free guide "10 Yoga Mistakes to Stop Today" at http://www.quietmind.yoga

82 Slow Vinyasa For Grounding And Recharging - Emphasis On Hips
If you've had a day where you are "go, go, go" and putting your attention in several directions this is increasing the Vata Dosha, the air element. Repeated over time, this leads to an excess of Vata Dosha which shows up as anxiety, worry, fear, dryness, itchiness, digestive distress, IBS, cold limbs and similar issues. To help reduce this excess and avoid these negative effects of excess Vata you can do practices that increase the Earth element, or Kapha Dosha. It can be hard to go from that Vata excess to stillness, so this practice includes a good amount of movement to help ease into grounding. The effect I've often felt from doing these sort of practices is like recharging. It feels as if I have a sense of touch in several directions depleting my energy and attention, then I do this sort of practice and my energy comes back to my center and my energy replenishes. You will have your own experience, but I have found this incredibly helpful and much needed for me, hopefully you find it helpful too! 79: Vinyasa For Shoulders, Handstand, Crow And Side Crow (Advanced)
Want to improve your Headstand? This was one of the first more challenging poses I was able to do when I started yoga but it was scary as hell when I first saw people doing it in classes. I thought I’d never be able to do it. I keep this in mind when I teach step by step how to get into it. 1) If you use a wall you are more likely to use momentum and put your neck at greater risk. 2)  Instead start with your arms in a triangle base, top of head down, lower body like downdog.  3) Slowly walk your feet in until you can’t anymore.  4) Then use Hip flexor strength to bring your knees to your chest off the ground. One knee at a time.  5) If you can hold there it becomes much easier to begin to extend the legs up.  Practice your Headstand in todays episode of the Quietmind Yoga Podcast Today's episode is brought to you by the free PDF Guide: "10 Yoga Mistakes to Stop Today" and learn 10 Easy Adjustments to Build Strength, Flexibility and Balance in Your Practice, Focus, Calm and Intention in Your Life.
