How do you design for sustainability?

How do you design for sustainability?

In our final episode of the season we talk to twin brothers Jack Trew (Klarna) and Louis Trew (Enviral) who have both found themselves working within sustainability in their design practice. We discuss what drew them into the field and how they are able to keep motivated and feel an impact with their design. From the dual perspectives of in-house and agency, we get into when is the best moment in a user journey to affect behaviour and ponder whether guilt is an effective/ethical motivator in changing user habits.

Descender is hosted by Melanie Löff-Bird, and produced by Francesco Cutolo, Minna Engelmark, Anushae Hussain, Jonatan Andersson, Rachel Rosenson and Melanie Löff-Bird. This podcast is brought to you by the design team at Klarna.

How do you optimize for IRL?

How do you optimize for IRL?

Klarna may be known for speedy online shopping but sometimes we also have to push pixels into the real world. This week Oscar Linger and Jo Chevry chat about how they managed to prototype in-store experiences while in lockdown, trying to identify the solutions to spotty WiFi and faulty check-out terminals. Of course we also get into our newly found appreciation for well-designed QR codes and how the slow-down of the pandemic actually offered new opportunities for the in-store team to build better.

Is just translation enough?

Is just translation enough?

As we saw in our mini-series on UX writing, words matter but success doesn’t translate in all languages. The Klarna app supports 17 languages which means a lot of opportunity & risk when it comes to communicating with users . In this first episode of our new season we talk with product designer, Justyna Piwowarska and UX researcher, Selina Burzler about how they have tackled localization and getting research done in a way that allows people to express themselves most honestly despite language barriers.

Establishing the process between Design and UX Writing

Establishing the process between Design and UX Writing

In our final episode of Season 2, we get into the nitty gritty details of what makes a successful UX Writing & Product Design collab. From Klarna Berlin, Alfonso Maestro and Haerin Song peel back the curtain on how they’ve built a strong foundation for the Klarna Bank product. These two will share with us practical examples of how to create foundational alignments on ways of working, setting up Figma to work best for UX writers and engineers, and understanding how and when to involve legal and marketing in the work. Their insights span newmarket launches, localisation, and good old error copy improvements that you can take back to your team.

Bonfire connections of a UX Designer & Writer

Bonfire connections of a UX Designer & Writer

From a chance bonfire meeting in South Africa to becoming a Gemini design duo for the ages, Luci Badenhorst (Praekelt.com, South Africa) and Lee Mavuso (Klarna, Sweden) share with use there working journey. As a designer, Luci shares why working with UX writing and story is essential to the work, and how to bring writers into the team and client projects. As a writer, Lee gives a peak into her shift from copy to UX and how she pivoted her love of words into the agency world. But their advice above any process is how to form connection and common understanding with anyone in the room.

Seeking inspiration in UX Writing

Seeking inspiration in UX Writing

Our Focus on UX Writing continues as we explore what inspires the words we work with. We’ll speak with Ben Davies in London (former English teacher and PM, current cheese-balloon artists and UX Writer) and Meaghan Cooper in Stockholm (academia escapist into the world of UX) about how they stay sparked. Ben shares how they comb through app for awareness, and building awareness of how their own style can creep into their tone of voice. While Meaghan shows how her background in poli-sci and text analysis lends itself to UX Writing thinking and the critical need of having a crazy section in your Figma board. Both will speak about vomit drafts, so it’s a conversation for the ages.

Getting into UX Writing

Getting into UX Writing

Last episode we were introduced to the world of UX Writing. Now in our latest UX Writing deep dive, Joe Bertino and Sergio Valero start to show us the scope of this field. These UX Writers take us through their organic journey of how they pivoted from marketing and ads into the user focused discipline of UX Writing, and pick apart the similarities and differences between these roles. They talk about the different ways to get into this field, through formal education, bootcamps, or lateral career moves within companies. But most importantly, they speak about how to reflect for yourself if UX writing is the right field for you.

How much attention should I pay to design trends?

How much attention should I pay to design trends?

QR codes. 90’s eyebrows. Dancing Queen played with a hand flute. Airport food court menus. All of these topics will (somehow?) be discussed on this week's episode. We’ll dive into the when, how and why to keep up with design trends. Jonatan Andersson ( Scania, Sectra, Swedish Migration Agency, Klarna) and Elizaveta Potapkina (Mobile World Congress, Visa, currently at Klarna) will take us into their world of when they do -- or intentionally don’t-- bring design trends into their daily work and inspiration.

Finding where we want to work

Finding where we want to work

No, it’s not another conversation about Corona. But this is a conversation about reflecting on the switch to remote work during this past year. Catch up with Axel Lindmarker (Klarna, Google Creative Lab) and Noukka Signe (Klarna, ING) about what they’ve learned about work-life balance, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the importance of proactive growth.

Getting unstuck when your growth stalls

Getting unstuck when your growth stalls

In this episode we talk with Tim Plummer ( Klarna, Yelp) and Ricardo Esteves (Facebook, Klarna) about how to get unstuck in design projects, and in your design career. We learn that the good kind of stuck shows you you’re at the heart of a problem, and how to get out of the bad kind of stuck with reflection exercises, refinding inspiration and bringing the problem back to what matters— the users.  They’ll also discuss how their design process evolves between B2C and B2B projects, and how game design has broadened their perspective.

Startup, agency, product. Where should I work?

Startup, agency, product. Where should I work?

What does a product designers life look like when they switch between agency, start-ups or a big product team? We catch up with Marcus Johansson (R/GA, Apegroup, Creuna, Klarna), Melanie Löff-Bird (R/GA, Elephant, Klarna) and KJ Vogelius (DDB, Klarna) about their experiences flip-flopping between different types of teams. We dig into how the designer experience might differ depending on a company’s type, structure and size. But also that there are some core elements, like design positive environments and colleagues that you can learn from, are always key to a great gig.

To be a specialist or a generalist?

To be a specialist or a generalist?

As diverse product designers, we’re always asking ourselves “should I learn one more new skill, or go deeper into perfecting the repertoire I already have?” In todays episode, we speak with Francesco Cutolo (design systems designer) , Dilara Neutze (design lead and generalist), and Haerin Song (an expert motion and prototyper designer) about how they’ve navigated the question of whether to be broad design generalists, or super skilled design specialists. They’ll talk about how their designs careers have evolved naturally and consciously over time, how they communicate their place on the design spectrum to designers, non-designers and in interviews, and what their chosen path means for their career growth and opportunities going forward.
