#57 - Ebony Gaylor - Decade of Action

We are joined by Ebony Gaylor, Managing Partner of newly launched social cause agency Decade of Action, a partnership with Thinkerbell's Adam Ferrier and Margie Reid.

Ebony has held key strategy and social change roles, most recently for the Australian Red Cross. We discuss Ebony's background and childhood, and the motivation behind Decade of Action, and why businesses play a critical role in addressing urgent global challenges over the next 10 years and beyond.

We discuss how business has a critical role to play and needs to take more targeted and authentic action. We explore the key role of evidence in identifying critical causes, that may seem left of centre to many of the more visible issues that come top of mind.

And approaches to working with influential businesses, brands, governments and movements to boldly define their purpose platform and galvanize their assets, ideas and to have a positive impact on the world.

#56 - Dr Fiona Kerr + Steve Sammartino

Today we are joined by Dr Fiona Kerr, Founder and CEO of the Neurotech Institute, and leading futurist
and author Steve Sammartino in our first double header with previous guests.

Fiona was interviewed in episode 11 of Real People and Steve in episode 16.

This most certainly was an explosion of thinking as Fiona and Steve shared their observations of the
world in chaos and what this means moving forward.

We discuss a huge amount in a rollercoaster chat from digital sovereignty to how well Australia is performing at a global scale.

We discuss the hunger games of the US and lessons as to how to take a longer-term perspective can be learnt from places like Finland. We ponder is Australia more like the US or Europe? And, does Australia's safe stability make us lucky or lazy?

We discuss systems thinking and blind spots. What future capitalism will look like. And, the high likelihood we will just slot back into comfortable old ways, even with the pause during COVID-19 to slow down and think about better ways moving forward.

#55 - Prof. Genevieve Bell - Contact tracing, data and vulnerability

Today we are joined by Distinguished Professor Genevieve Bell, Director of the 3A Institute at ANU in Canberra, a collaboration with CSIRO's Data61, with the mission of building a new applied science around the management of artificial intelligence, data, technology and their impact on humanity.

Genevieve is also Senior Fellow, New Technology Group at Intel, since joining Intel as a researcher to conduct ethnographic research in 1998.

This is a most fascinating discussion about the world in chaos, how we are adjusting and what might come. We discuss key themes such as contact tracing and mass surveillance, and how critical it is that our communities embrace to fight COVID-19.

We explore how the devastating Australian bushfires and now COVID-19 have shone the light on our vulnerabilities and segments of the community that were already falling through the cracks dealing with inequality, personal dangers and complexities, and the role of the government in supporting this.

Genevieve shares her perspective on how Australia has dealt with COVID-19 compared with other parts of the world, and how it is near impossible to understand the situation without more data and stable models.

#54 - Dr Rebecca Huntley - Australia lucky, even in a pandemic

Today we are joined by Dr Rebecca Huntley, one of Australia's foremost researchers on social trends.

A regular media commentator and writer, including for the Quarterly Essay of March 2019, in which she
explored how Australians are calling for change from our government in climate change and wider social
issues, and the corruption of democracy.

Rebecca is the author of numerous books, including 'How to Talk About Climate Change in a Way That
Makes a Difference,' Still Lucky and The World According to Y.

We discuss the changes that may come from the chaos of bushfires then COVID-19, some thinking around how Australia and Australians have responded well to a pandemic, and ponder 'are we still lucky?'

We discuss fairness vs freedom and the likely shift in thinking towards Australia seeking a greater level
of self-sufficiency moving forward, and the wider impact on our cultural values.

#53 - John-Paul Drake - Riding the Retail Rodeo

Today we are joined by JP, John-Paul Drake Director of Drakes Supermarkets.

We go on a fabulous journey going back to JP's entrepreneurial childhood, hear about riding the retail rodeo of the past few months, and how a bit of right place right time luck is awesome. We try to make sense of all the crazy hoarding and hear about JP's global social media attention for his one finger salute
at the man wanting a refund on 150 packs of toilet paper.

This is a great chat about the importance of agility in business, standing up for your staff, particularly against the rare arse of a customer, how the waves seem be bringing consumer sentiment back to 'buy local' and how JP and the Drakes team are leveraging this now and into the future. We talk about marketing and authenticity against the supermarket juggernauts and a whole lot more.

#51 - Brent Hill - Marketing tourism in a stay at home pandemic

#51 - Brent Hill - Marketing tourism in a stay at home pandemic

Today we are joined by Brent Hill, the Executive Director of Marketing at the South Australian Tourism Commission. The leader behind recent campaigns 'book them out' responding to the devastating bushfires, and SA TV sharing content from across South Australia, responding to the 'stay at home' COVID-19 pandemic.

Brent could have never imagined being involved in a tourism campaign to encourage people to stay at home, but that's the situation at the moment and for the foreseeable future. How does a tourism team deal with such a predicament?

This is a most fascinating discussion about marketing and leadership in a topsy turvy world, including empowering the team to ever seek inspiration, and to unlock Edward de Bono's thinking caps, and not overusing the black hat, encouraging tourism operators to share their story through compelling content, that nowadays does not always need to be of the highest production standards. And, stimulating joy in challenging times is critical.

Encouraging people to support local producers through online purchasing of artisan wine, gin, food and other products is important to build connection, and to build a huge appetite for travelling South Australia's wonderful regions once the restrictions are removed.

A discussion about marketing and joy in a world of uncertainty and chaos.

#50 - Adam Ferrier - Say "no" to boring efficiency

Adam Ferrier is the founder of Thinkerbell. He's a popular public speaker and author of recent release 'Stop Listening to the Customer' and
previous popular read The Advertising Effect: How to Change Behaviour.

He's a former Strategy Planner at Saatchi and Saatchi, Co-Founder and Global Head of Strategy at Naked Communications, current Board member of Tribe, and Co Founder of the Market Science Ideas Xchange and more.

We discuss Adam's take on these crazy times we are all presently living through, and how it is hard to predict what new behaviours will stick and which will revert back. How will consumer behaviours change as a result of COVID 19?

Adam shares some insight as to why leaders should stop listening to their customers, but rather be confident and true to the brand and what makes it distinctive. We discuss how user centred design and CX is often more so about boring efficiency than better for the brand or the customer.

We discuss the pratfall effect, optimism bias, brands performing well in the chaos and lots, lots more.

Olga started her career at Saatchi and Saatchi Hungary and since had an impressive brand and communications strategy career across the Middle East and North Africa, including time living and working from Dubai for leading agencies Y&R, Saatchi & Saatchi and ODG. #41 - Olivia Dryden - Beautiful life after death

#41 - Olivia Dryden - Beautiful life after death

Today we are joined by Olivia Dryden, jeweller and taxidermy artist.

Since graduating from Adelaide College of the Arts in 2014, Olivia's career has advanced significantly and she has receive acclaim and recognition for her work. You can find Olivia's website at
oliviadrydenjewellery.com

Olivia has travelled to India in 2015 for the Helpmann Academy 'Sanskriti Kendra Residency'. The six week residency was an opportunity to escape, be ripped out of her comfort zone and thrown into a world of culture, colour, religion, contrast and overall, just an amazing country.

Olivia was also recently awarded one of the inaugural Helpmann Academy Fellowships, supported by the James and Diana Ramsay Foundation valued at up to $20,000 each. This fellowship allowed Olivia to spend three months in London establishing connections and networking opportunities to further develop skills in taxidermy and jewellery making.

Olivia's beautiful art comes from a curiosity with death, which arose when she started researching the Victorian Memento Mori period from the 15th to 18th century. She admired the symbolism they used to depict death, like the skull-and-crossbones and the hourglass. She was especially interested in the jewellery that was made using the deceased's hair, and the post-mortem photography. She loved how such a taboo subject, death, could be shown in such a beautiful way.

Olivia has had a solo exhibition at 'Life After Death' at Hill Smith Gallery and her jewellery is available in many jewellery stores.

We go on a wonderful journey from a childhood loving art, and how Olivia's thirst to keep learning and see the world differently continues and will ever continue. In a profession where only 2% make it, Olivia's passion, network and entrepreneurship is seeing her triumph even with the challenge that comes with life as an artist.

#40 - Simon K Burt aka STĪLES.BE, street art and not coming to conclusions

Today we are joined by Simon K Burt aka STĪLES.BE, a contemporary artist from Australia.

Simon has previously worked under the name STORRE in the graffiti art movement since the 1990s, and has evolved his style to take the elements of his street art and reinterprets them in his own unique style balancing precision and imperfection. You can find more info at
stilesbe.com.

This is a great interview to kick off a few episodes exploring art and creativity.

Simon recently completed a piece of street art we commissioned on the front of our building. Go to our social media for pics.

We hear about childhood loving art, and soon fascinated by graffiti. We explore topics such as street art, graffiti or vandalism, and that true creativity and life is about experiences, not coming to conclusions and keeping the child alive.

#39 - James Fergusson - Innovating real time mobile research

#39 - James Fergusson - Innovating real time mobile research

Today we are joined by James Fergusson, the CEO of MDI (https://www.mdi-global.com) a mobile focused research company launched in 2013.

MDI is based in Melbourne, with offices in Cape Town, Miami, Utah, Washington DC and recently launching their European presence from London. MDI has developed and is continuously evolving its own proprietary mobile research platform, and has worked with some of the world's largest consumer brands.

This was a very enjoyable chat. I first met James back in 1994 when I started my career in market research at Frank Small and Associates in Melbourne. We were both wide-eyed young researchers, discovering market research somewhat by chance. It's nice to sit down 25 years, and eight kids later (six of these James') to chat. James has enjoyed a highly successful career in market research, including being based in Singapore for seven years in global executive roles for TNS / Kantar with a focus on technology and emerging markets.

We discuss James' early days as an entrepreneurial kid mowing the lawns of neighbours to buy lollies and other joys the money brings. And, that a successful career is seldom linear or predictable, and it's best to just embrace the ride.

James shares his perspective on the massive impact on research mobile phones have had over the past decade in the developed and developing world, and how this informed the strategy and innovation behind MDI. We hear about the story of MDI, and some lessons for those seeking to build a global facing business from Australia, including how to overcome our innate cultural risk aversion. A fascinating discussion about innovation in consumer insight past, present and the uncertain future.

#38 - Ainslie Williams - Survey software with a qualitative soul

Today we are joined by Ainslie Williams, the CEO and Co-Founder of Qualie, the Australian based qualitative research software platform launched in 2016. You can find Qualie at - www.qualie.com.

We go way back to Ainslie's childhood as a young girl who loved to stare at other people and how this deep curiosity as to what makes others tick lead her to a successful career in research. We discuss the joys of being allowed into people's lives, their homes and to listen to their stories and views.

This is a fascinating discussion about the patterns in human attitudes and behaviours Ainslie has observed over her two decades in research. And her interest from a young age in how different people can be.

We discuss the joys and complexity of creating software and bringing together Qualie's research and technology skill-sets to build towards the vision to scale globally.

Qualie has featured in the Australian financial review and other media, raised significant investment funding including many notable supporters, and boasts clients from Coca Cola to Google. And is having huge success in Australia, the UK and beyond. It will be exciting to watch Ainslie and Qualie's story unfold!

#36 - Barry Enderwick - How Netflix killed Blockbuster etc.

Today we are joined by former Netflix marketer Barry Enderwick for a fascinating discussion about growth in uncertainty. Including the role of evidence-based insight in guiding the best way forward.

Barry and I sat down for coffee at the Hilton Sydney in a break in the annual Australian Market and Social Research Society Conference.

Barry is a passionate advocate of the role of robust research in disruptive business, and critically asking the right questions that the incumbent often miss, and is unable to respond to.

We discuss Barry's 11 years at Netflix while it scaled globally and disrupted large default competitors at the time. A fascinating discussion as to why cashed up establishment such as Blockbuster didn't see the end approaching and why such businesses are slow to respond to the more hungry and agile innovators. A great story of strong leadership triumphing.

#33 - Elaine Stead - Tall poppies and mediocrity

Today we are joined by Elaine Stead from Blue Sky Alternative Investments.

We go way back to Elaine's childhood as a young girl who loved homework, learning and ever eager to please.

We talk about Elaine's academic pursuit of science, then pivoting into the world of venture capital, start up advisory and multiple board directorships.

Elaine and I discuss all things success and failure, and how Australia's tall poppy syndrome just breeds mediocrity.

I sat down with Elaine on a day, week, month, year that was pretty challenging personally and professionally.

On the day of this interview, Elaine was in the media, and she felt horrible about letting investors and others down.

Life can be very hard sometimes, when no matter how hard you try things go bad.

#32 - Stephen Scheeler - Silicon Valley, Visionary Leaders, Culture and Cults

Today we are joined by Stephen Scheeler! Former Facebook and Instagram MD for Australia and New Zealand, Senior Advisor at McKinsey & Co and TEDx Speaker. Stephen and I sat down at the Sydney office of McKinsey and Co to have a fascinating discussion going back to Stephen's childhood in small town USA. And, how he longed to go to university in Europe, yet was awarded a Scholarship to study in Japan, and how this introverted young man became the American everyone wanted to know - from fellow students to the local mayor. We hear how Stephen's study of east Asian history and with little interest in tech, he found himself entering the world of tech juggernauts. We discuss the obsession of the likes of Facebook in being THE employer of choice, requires putting staff contentment at the top of strategic priorities. And, how staff incentives from free food for staff and families, to the option for female staff to freeze their embryos have become the norm in Silicon Valley, to take the distractions away from a high performing team. We explore the importance of a vision staff can truly believe in and thrive towards. And, the fine line between a strong culture and cult like faith in such young, wealthy and almost magical leaders. #27 - David Minear - Creativity, Surf Music, Wine and Fringe Arts

If you love the idea of living an eclectic life of creativity, surf music, wine and fringe arts, well strap yourself in for David's story. His own wine brand 2 Mates, surf music label Bombora and much more.

Starting out as a kid with parents running a drive in and a home adjoining it, David's life was seeded early on with the importance of the Arts and living a life embedded with creativity.

On telling his typically cool and calm dad of his plans to quit uni and go into advertising the mood changed - "don't do it!" An interesting response considering David's father was ad adman. And, clearly advertising is in the family's DNA with David's son continuing the trade.

David has an impressively simple LinkedIn profile noting 'Independent Entertainment Professional' and one previous job 'General Ratbag - Young And Rubicam 1977-2003.'

Yes, there is much between the lines. David has held senior executive, leadership board and chair roles in advertising, many commercial enterprises and the Adelaide Fringe.

David has been the Chair of the Adelaide Fringe Festival since 2014, the world's second largest open access arts festival only to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The festival largely takes over Adelaide, and even some regional South Australia for 31 magical days and nights each year February to March.

A chat choker block with insight from the role of the arts in building a strong culture to living a life of creativity, imagination and grabbing opportunities and spotting a good idea.

#26 - Yarmila Alfonzetti - Culture, Innovation and Growing Opera

#26 - Yarmila Alfonzetti - Culture, Innovation and Growing Opera

Today, we are joined by Yarmila Alfonzetti.

How do you innovate and reinvigorate an opera company in the era of short attention spans, the Bachelor and everyone wants to be famous talent shows? That is just the burning deck and challenging situation Yarmila was faced with when she recently took on the role as Executive Director of State Opera South Australia.

If you think a podcast about opera sounds boring, then think again. Today's show is anything but boring, with insight flying a mile a minute. From Yarmila's youth playing six instruments and sneaking in to the opera house at intermission at her time at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. To insights into what makes a good culture, innovation and taking the opera to the people.

How the arts in Australia is quite different to many other parts of the world. And, has a long way to go to engage new audiences and become a habitual part of life. And, perhaps no matter how much things change they perhaps stay the same.

We discuss how to enjoy the Opera and hear about State Opera South Australia's latest show The Merry Widow directed by Graeme Murphy. And, Yarmila's focus on building a strong team to drive forward.

#25 - Geordie Brookman - Theatre, the Arts and knowing who 'we' are

Geordie Brookman is Artistic Director at State Theatre Company South Australia, a role he has held since 2012. We talk with Geordie towards the end of his highly successful time at the company.

We go back to Geordie's childhood, with a love of reading and with the Arts in his DNA. We discuss his journey and the importance of theatre and the arts in our cultural fabric.

A fascinating exploration into themes from the role of risk taking and collaboration in theatre, to the significant economic return of the Arts.

Geordie is soon to be setting up a life in Berlin with his young family, a city that embraces the Arts. Following State Theatre's next play - a one man version of George Orwell's political classic Animal Farm in March 2019. It was wonderful to have this in-depth discussion with Georgie to share his story.

#23 - Teena Munn and Geoff Cobham - Not growing up boring

We are joined by Teena Munn and Geoff Cobham to discuss all things not growing up boring, innovation, why the Arts matters so much to children and adults and a whole lot more.

Teena and Geoff recently joined Patch Theatre as Producer and Artistic Director. I have been a director on the Board of Patch Theatre for 10 years, so this interview is particularly close to my heart and passion.

Patch Theatre has been creating high quality theatre for 4-8 year olds since 1972, and in that time has presented to around 2 million children and their parents in Australia and across the world including US, Canada, Singapore, Korea, Japan, China, Hong Kong and New Zealand. Patch is very much motivated by the transformational power of curiosity and imagination, in our children which hopefully remains into adulthood.

We go on a fabulous journey into what Teena and Geoff were like as children, to some tips and tricks to keep the child like mind alive well into adulthood.

#22 - André Eikmeier - Cult Tribal - Tribes and Business for Good

André and Jason softened into the couches upstairs at Square Holes HQ and pontificate about all things belonging, business for good and growing tribes. And, why some businesses do bad, often when they forget where it all began and the goodness in their DND.

André is Founder of Cult Tribal an agency he recently launched to help brands unite tribes. Go to
culttribal.com for more. As it says on the website "By connecting with purpose, by standing for something, something that people want to be a part of. Because we all have a need to feel like we belong."

This is a wonderful discussion going way back to André's childhood of feeling uncomfortably different and how his entrepreneurial journey including co-founding and leading wine Tribe vinomofo inspired and epiphany at 2am a couple years ago to guide his next exciting phase.

We go deep into what it takes to find your personal and business purpose. And why some businesses go bad even with the best intentions, yet it is never too late to choose to be good.

#21 - Prof David Corkindale (Adelaide via the UK) - Marketing past, present and future

Professor David Corkindale takes us back to the pioneering days of marketing. David is Emeritus Professor of Marketing Management at the University of South Australia.

We go back to David's boyhood in a small town in the UK, his early career when marketing was largely unknown. We hear about David's time working in advertising in London during the crazy and exciting 'Mad Men' era.

This is a wonderful journey through a very successful career, from UK to Australia. And, from the commercial world to universities, and how the landscape has changed so much for the better and sometimes for the worse. And, lessons for the future of marketing and beyond.

Such a pleasurable conversation, of a life very well spent, a journey through time of changing moods and minds, and David's current research focus on product placement in TV and film.

#19 - Andrew Killey (Adelaide via Sydney) - KWP! Co-Founder - Music, Writing and Advertising

Andrew Killey joins us to tell his story of music, writing and advertising.

Andrew is or was the 'K' in KWP! The hugely successful creative agency he initially founded in 1991 with Peter Withy, to rethink the traditional agency model and to put the creatives in more direct contact with clients.

Andrew has now exited KWP and consults through 'BrandA Agency' and has and continues to hold numerous board positions. You can follow Andrew on Twitter via @KilleySA.

Andrew shares his story from growing up in Cronulla in Sydney, playing football and cricket, and surfing, as one of four boys. And, how his band was drawn to Adelaide, South Australia by it's reputation as a great live music scene. The move then resulted in a chance junior role in advertising, and eventually an opportunity to combine his music and writing talents to create a successful jingle.

We discuss what makes a good agency, and a good client, building on Andrew's time at the likes of George Patterson, Clemenger and BBDO in Australia and the US. And, how relationships are critical to strong and trusted client - agency relationships, and the powerful ideas this can create.

A fascinating discussion looking back and reflecting on the fundamentals that never change and the opportunities moving forward.

#17 - Ginny Stevens (Mangoplah) - Founder, Active Farmers - Physical and Mental Health in Rural Communities

Today we head to Mangoplah in rural New South Wales to chat with Ginny Stevens the Founder and General Manager of Active Farmers.

From humble beginnings as a regular fitness class in a farming community south of Wagga Wagga in 2015, Active Farmers has rapidly grown to 24 communities across rural Australia, including New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania and Victoria, with 30 communities planned by the end of 2018, and even bigger goals ahead.

Ginny discusses growing up on a farm in Tasmania, and at 18 years of age heading to work as a Jillaroo in the Northern Territory, learning about hard work and pushing beyond her comfort zone.

Ginny started Active Farmers seeing the need for physical and mental support in rural communities. Yet, has been overwhelmed at the level of need and demand. And, the interest in rural communities in building physical and mental fitness, social connection and addressing high levels of suicide.

This is a thoughtful discussion about the critical role the not for the profit program has. As well as Active Farmers' success in gaining community and partner support, and working towards making life in rural Australia better now and well into the future.

#15 - Phil Reedman (Adelaide via UK) - Master of Wine - World, Wine & South Australia

#15 - Phil Reedman (Adelaide via UK) - Master of Wine - World, Wine & South Australia

Phil Reedman is a wine educator and consultant to wineries, importers and retailers in Australia, the UK, China and beyond, a wine show judge and Editor of Australian Wine Showcase Magazine.

This is one of my favourite episodes so far, mostly from the conversation about the world of wine, and partly because Phil came with a wonderful bottle of 2014 Landaire Padthaway Chardonnay to share.

We discuss consumer, varietal and geographic trends and how one brand might differentiate from the thousands of others. We discuss wine from the UK, South Australia, France, and Portugal.

There are few tips along the journey for those keen to know about wine, and thought starters for those more immersed in wine professionally or personally.

We discuss where Phil's career started, and his time with the likes of Tesco in the UK, as corks were replaced with screw caps and great customer support,
and how Australian wine has dramatically improved its reputation over recent decades.

#13 - Ray Poynter (Nottingham) - Researcher, Author, Keynote Speaker - The Future of Market Research

There is likely no better man to talk to about where market research is heading and where it has been than Nottingham UK based globally trotting Ray Poynter.

Starting out 40 years ago as a programmer on innovative market research tools, he has since had many pivots in the sector and is author of multiple market research publications, from mobile market research, to online and social media and semiotics. In 1999 Ray Founded the Future Place, a provider of market research training and consulting.

He is also the man behind NewMR.org, an initiative offering regular online events with leading researchers, thinkers and doers from across the world. Topics explored include artificial intelligence and visual storytelling, video analysis, semiotics, automation and more.

#12 - Dr Elvira Fischer (Copenhagen) - Neuroscientist - Neuroscience & Human Behaviour

Our unconscious decision making, and what stimulates our brain in a positive or negative way, can conflict with what we think we think.

Ex-Olympian, neuroscientist and researcher, based in Copenhagen, Dr Elvira Fischer today shares how the 'hype' around using neuroscience in research to measure advertising and other decision making has now settled, as the cowboys leave and the experts offering value remain.

Elvira works at iMotions as a neuroscientist and product specialist to support clients including Harvard, Stanford, Unilever and BMW in their endeavour to utilise insights into human behaviour and emotional responses. iMotion initially founded on eye tracking for retail and other clients, and have since advanced this technology and broadened into facial expression analysis, video analysis and measuring arousal.

We discuss a wide range of topics around monitoring the brain. From measuring arousal (from product, advertising and other stimuli) to tracking of motivation, cognitive workload and engagement.

#11 - Dr Fiona Kerr (Adelaide via Scotland), Professor Neural and Systems Complexity - Imagination & Human Connection

How we form connections with each other when looking into each other's eyes versus via a click of our smart phone makes a big difference to the emotions we ignite and trust we build.

Dr Fiona Kerr shares her research and expertise including the neuroscience of human-to-human and human-to-technology interaction, neurogenesis, and how good leaders create organisations that flourish.

Dr Kerr is Industry Professor, Neural and Systems Complexity, at the University of Adelaide. She builds on 30 years working and consulting in Australia, the US and Europe to corporate and government in relation to science and power of human connectivity, artificial intelligence and wider conversations.

We discuss what makes humans and robots distinctive, and how critical it is that humans retain their imagination, creativity and leaps of faith. And, how we need to spend more time switching off than being continuously wired online. It is so easy to outsource convenience and thinking, and even be a bit lazy. Are the humans becoming robots?

#10 - Fiona Blades (New York) - President MESH Experience - Show Business & Brand Experience

#10 - Fiona Blades (New York) - President MESH Experience - Show Business & Brand Experience

There's no business like show business, and that at least partly explains how Fiona Blades grew up in a small village in the north of England wanting to be a ballerina, studied Drama and Literature at University, then went on to establish MESH Experience in 2006, a global consumer insight agency with offices in London, New York, Sao Paulo and Singapore.

MESH specialises in understanding people's experiences - with brands, within categories and across their behaviours, working with global icons including Unilever, GM and LG.

Many people look at the products and services they use and think "I could do that better," but few ever do. Fiona was bold enough to take an outsider's perspective and develop a new approach to help businesses better use critical data to improve brand experiences online, offline and the real world.

We discuss where MESH grew from, Fiona's perspective on brands, culture, data, insight and driving change when decision makers may have their blinkers on.

This is a fascinating discussion including the role of tech and data in understanding the lives of people, as well as the vital role of people thinking and reflecting to solve business and other complex problems.

#09 - Kristi Zuhlke (Chicago), CEO of Knowledge Hound - Better Understanding People

From growing up as an active outdoors obsessed young girl with a big imagination and a note book of business ideas, Kristi Zuhlke has launched and exited successful start-ups and is now the CEO and Founder of Knowledge Hound, a global tech company working with brands as diverse as Spotify, lyft, Procter & Gamble and Whirlpool. Kristi is passionate about the role of data to help the world better understand people, and how decision makers can better make sense of the huge volume of data available to them. We go for a wonderful journey from Kristi's willingness to embrace thinking different as a child into adulthood, to her insight from sitting down in the lounge rooms of people in developing countries and that 'happy means different things to different cultures,' from the joys and lessons from raising $5 Million and successfully launching and growing Knowledge Hound, to what makes the US, Australia and Europe culturally similar and different, and how Kristi finds zen in an ever uncertain world.
