Jen Pollock Michel

Jen Pollock Michel

Jen Pollock is an author of several books, including the recent release, "A Habit Called Faith." Her book "Teach Us to Want" was named Christianity Today’s Book of the Year in 2015.

She's always been captivated by several particular stories in Scripture: Abraham and his doubt; Hannah and her grief; David and his failure.

"Though many turn to the Bible for what to believe and how to behave, I’ve come to think that it offers us something even more expansive and beautiful and imaginative," she said.

She talks with our Mallory Brown about her latest book, which is a 40-day devotional about transformative nature of habits as it relates to deepening our faith.

Jennifer Dukes Lee

Jennifer Dukes Lee is the author of several books, including the forthcoming title Growing Slow, which releases May 11. She loves to write, embarrass her kids, and listen to 80's music.

"Jesus saved my life once upon a time, and then he kept doing it every single day since then," she writes on her website. "That’s why I am here: because of grace. I want to testify to his faithfulness and to make his great name known."

Her new book is all about cutting out the busy to embrace to rest. She and Mallory talk about the value of rest of doing things slow as well as what Scripture says about it.

"Jesus was never in a hurry," she says. "He never communicated an ethic of 'go big or go home.' He loves women. He empowers women, but it was not a 'Girl Boss' message."

Angie played college volleyball at the University of California. She also played professionally in Puerto Rico and was invited to join the U.S. National Team and play in the 2012 Olympics.

Jeni was previously an educator.

This is a great conversation about discipleship, our need for it, and what a discipleship community looks like, especially during a pandemic.

"The pandemic forced me to desire discipleship," Angie says in this conversation.

Discipleship can be challenging, but it is necessary in our walk with Jesus.

"It scares me, it stretches me, but I love it," Jeni says.

Both women now live in Dallas with their families.

Tyler Staton

Tyler Staton

Tyler Staton is the lead pastor of Oaks Church in Brooklyn and author of Searching for Enough: The High-Wire Walk Between Doubt and Faith, which released on March 2.

His passion is a community that is unexplainable apart from the love and power of God.

In this conversation he talks about the dichotomy of doubt and faith and how waiting on God produces perseverance.

"I think that God is not in a rush to resolve all of our confusion, all of our pain, all of our hardship, all of our angst," he said. "Because perseverance really does have a work to finish in the human soul, and if God short-circuits that process every time, we miss out on maturity, we miss out on intimacy."

He also offers a theological approach to doubt by studying the life of Thomas and how that's practical to us today.

"Henri Nouwen uses this phrase 'wounded healers,' and I think that's the story of every apostle," he said. "It's the place that their deepest wound becomes the place of deepest fruitfulness in their life."
