Spotlight on Arctic Monkeys
In the first episode in a slightly new (borrowed) awards format, we're joined by Jamie from Talking Dad UK to chat about the 2006 debut from the Arctic Monkeys.
As well as awarding prizes for best track and considering it as the best debut album of all time, we also ask "Does it deserve the Sean Bean Award for the best thing from Sheffield".
As always, thanks for listening. If you know someone who likes Records and/or Bands please tell them about our show or if you've got a minute, Leave us a review
Cheers

It's a Birthday Indie Disco!!!
In which our heroes have a birthday!
Holy Smokes, it's been a whole year since we started Records and Bands so we thought we'd celebrate by getting a gang together and having an Indie Disco.
Sam and his friends have made a playlist to demonstrate the UK indie scene of the 2000's. We talk about its relationship to the Britpop years and how it relates to their days of pubs, clubs and gigs.
It's a busy old show but thanks for celebrating our birthday with us.
As always, thanks for listening. If you know someone who likes Records and/or Bands please tell them about our show or if you've got a minute, Leave us a review

The Man Comes Around // Johnny Cash American Recordings
In which our heroes talk s*** about American Recordings from Johnny Cash.
Sam and I get deep into what might just be the best run of albums from any artist of all time. The six albums recorded by country legend Johnny Cash, with legendary producer Rick Rubin on his American Recordings label.
It's not all about Nine Inch Nails covers and country standards as we go through each of these records, chatting about our favourite songs, the collaborations and the vitality of this artist during his final years.

31. A Spectre of the 80's // New Ghost Album Impera // Number of the Beast // Yes at 50 and The Wildhearts take a Break
In which our heroes talk s*** about the new album from Ghost.
Leon joins me this week as we chat about massive anniversaries for a 50 year old prog record, Closer to the Edge by Yes, and the record that sparked this 30 year friendship, The Number of the Beast from Iron Maiden as that record turns 40.
We touch on the news that The Wildhearts have announced a hiatus and then, to celebrate St Patricks Day, we briefly discuss the best bands to come out of the Emerald Isle. (Spoiler Alert..... It's Therapy?)
As usual we get into some of the bands and albums we've been listening too since we last spoke before we get into our thoughts on the new album from Ghost, Impera, a conversation that leads us down a little rabbit hole full of 80s hard rock nostalgia.

30. Bitz and Pieces. // Happy Birthday Mr Hoppus // Sheeran in the Dock // Kanye being a d*** // A bit of a catch up show
In which our heroes talk s*** about.....Records and Bands.
This is a proper old school, sitting round with your mates, did you see this, that and the other, kind of conversation that we always had as kids.
We wish a Happy Birthday to Blink 182 legend, and recent cancer survivor, Mark Hoppus, chat about Bruce Springsteens Wrecking Ball hitting a 10 year anniversary and talk about co-writing again, with Ed Sheeran defending his process in court in a copyright dispute.
We try to stay on the right side of celebrity gossip while talking about Kanye Wests recent sh***y behaviour. It only seems right after showing him so much love over the last year that we also call out his bad side.
After all of that we have a little chat around some recent listens, Rex Orange County and Shelter as well as some Limp Bizkit in preparation for another show.
Finally we start making plans for our birthday show next month. Sh***y indie disco anybody??

29. Still Fighting It // The Genius of Ben Folds // Buffalo Tom // The Joshua Tree // Bodycount is 30 // Carnival Steampunks Tankus the Henge // Scandi Rock with Volbeat and Ghost // with Leon Bateman
In which our heroes talk s*** about Ben Folds.....again!
I'm joined this week by new, regular cohost Leon to talk about how I think Ben Folds is the greatest songwriter of my lifetime, or failing that at least in the top one.
We send birthday wishes to Jeff Ament, Steve Harris and Gaz Coombes and share memories of Supergrass. We pay tribute to 3 "Great" records celebrating anniversaries this week in U2's The Joshua Tree, Let Me Come Over from the wonderful Buffalo Tom and the sledgehammer of the debut album from Bodycount.
After that we get into some of our recent listens including Scandinavian rockers Volbeat and Leon tells us about nearly joining a cult while watching Ghost at Knebworth (we'll have a review on the new album in a couple of weeks) I took a time out from listening to Mark Lanegan last week and cheered myself up with the first album from under the radar, high energy carnival steampunks, Tankus the Henge.
I close the show by trying to sell Leon on my favourite artist, Ben Folds. After Sam dismissed the first album from Ben Folds Five with "I just don't want it anywhere near me" (A quote for the poster!) I hope to have more luck with my best friend of 30 years. Warning his tenure as co-host of this podcast could be short-lived!!

28. Spotlight On: Moron Police. // A Boat on the Sea // with Leon Bateman
In which our heroes talk s*** about the album A Boat on the Sea from Moron Police.
Rob is joined today by new regular guest, Leon Bateman to discuss the 2019 prog/rock/pop/synthy??? album from Moron Police, A Boat on the Sea.
It's really difficult to find the words to describe this completely unique album so please forgive our mindless musings. Hopefully our enthusiasm will compensate for a complete lack of critical understanding on just what is happening on this record. Like the record, this episode goes all over the place so strap in and enjoy the ride.

27. Radiation Vibes & Black Hearts // Fountains of Wayne // All the Emo // Solo Albums from Eddie Vedder and Frank Turner // with Jason Fletcher
In which our heroes talk s*** about Fountains of Wayne and the black wave of 2000s Emo.
This week we welcome back our good friend Jason Fletcher for a great chat about the Emo scene of the 2000s and a rather poppy antidote to all the black hearts and emotions in the form of one of our favourite bands, Fountains of Wayne.
Before we get there we chat about the new album from Frank Turner, a Guardian article ranking the Top 30 Manic Street Preachers songs and then I air my mixed feelings on the new Eddie Vedder solo album. Earthling.
In a week where my daughter has been flirting with the emo of it all, I asked you, our dear listener, just what did I miss from that period in the 2000s when bands like Fall Out Boy, Paramore and My Chemical Romance ruled the airwaves. Armed with your suggestions and a bit of help from the others on the show, I go to Emo school!
To finish on a lighter note, we get into a band that can only ever make me smile. Fountains of Wayne. I recall hearing their first single, Radiation Vibe, seeing them at a rare UK appearance at Reading Festival, we discount their biggest hit and Jason brings a playlist of his favourite Fountains of Wayne tracks before declaring our Record of the Week.

26. Talking Dad Talking Motorhead. // Damned Damned Damned at 45 // Sam Fender & Gang of Youths contend for Springsteens Crown // Yelawolf, Frank Carter & a little Country. // Plus some Motorhead Chat
In which our heroes are joined by Jamie from Talking Dad UK to talk s*** about Motorhead.
It's another busy show as we celebrate 45 years of British Punk with the anniversary of the first UK punk album, 1977's Damned Damned Damned by The Damned, look forward to the new Kanye West documentary arriving on Netflix this week and pay a short tribute to The Mighty Mighty Bosstones who recently decided to call it a day.
Sam fills us in on the winners and losers in this years Brit awards (which only he really cares about) before we get onto some of the records and bands we've been listening to lately including Gang of Youths, Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes, Yelawolf and Overload by Yard Act.
We hear from you, our dear dear listener, with your albums to get us through February, moan about festival ticket prices and chat about some of the bands we've seen and those we haven't before Jamie drops his favourite Motorhead tracks on us and tell us about his love for the metal monsters.

25. It's All About That Bass. // Birthdays for Manic Street Preachers and Neil Young // Thoughts on Iron Maiden Senjustsu // Everything Bass with Leon Bateman
In which our heroes talk s*** about basslines, bassists and all things bass. It's all about that bass bass bass! This week Rob is joined by bass player extraordinaire, Leon Bateman.
Leon has been on the show a few times now and will hopefully become a semi-regular guest host as we move forward. We note a few anniversaries including 50 years of Neil Youngs Harvest, and a 30th birthday for the Manic Street Preachers debut record, Generation Terrorists. After getting Leons thoughts on the most recent release from his favourite band, Iron Maiden, we have a chat about Justin Hawkins (from The Darkness) new Youtube channel and some of Leons favourite records that weren't written by Steve Harris and co. This takes us down a path that leads to the bottom of the scale. Bass.
Leon has played bass since he was 14, and we touch on some of the telling offs we got as he tried to practice while his Dad was in bed after a night shift. Since then he's played in a few bands, most notably with Rob on drums in a small room at the back of the youth centre to audiences of zero. He has moved on to play with more talented but less fun musicians and to notably bigger audiences.
Finally he presents a bass centric playlist for us listen to containing such artists as Billy Ocean, Space Hog, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers and, of course, Mr Stevie Wonder.
Oh, Rob also manages to coax the bass line to Salt 'n' Peppa's "Push it" out of his battered old guitar. Stick around to the end for that treat!!

24. Even Vegans Loved Meatloaf // Bono can't sing // Taylor Swift can't write // Fontaine's D.C are great // We say goodbye to a legend. Meat loaf.
In which our heroes talk s*** about the passing of a legend, some anniversaries of cool albums and some of the bands that have caught our attention recently.
Some big stories in the news this week, Bono says Bono can't sing, Damon Albarn says Taylor Swift doesn't write and we mark the passing of a rock legend, Meatloaf with a little playlist of some of his massive tunes. Some notable albums hit notable ages as we talk about anniversaries for, among others, Rancid, Silverchair and Jamie T.
Its been a busy time for catching up on records so we have plenty to say around Bedouin Soundclash, Sam Fender and Sam Fender, while I make Sam listen to Tramp Stamps before we get into my new favourite band (at least for this week) Fontaine's D.C.

In which our heroes talk s*** about, among others, Taylor Swift.
We're back with the first Records and Bands Podcast of 2022 and it's a bit of a rambling affair.
We start off by comparing our most played songs of 2022, courtesy of Apple Musics Replay 21 feature before getting into some of the bands and artists we've been listening too recently. Once we'd chatted about Robs feelings on the latest Eddie Vedder solo single and old records from Jay-Z and the B-52s, we moved away from the hyphens and onto and Sam's new aural squeeze, Taylor Swift.

20. Spotlight on: Darkness on the Edge of Town
Much like Tom Petty, everybody loves Springsteen don't they. In this episode we chat briefly about the Boss' creative output and some of our favourite tracks from our favourite albums before getting into what is probably the great mans best work.
We discuss small town life, getting out and putting down roots as we get to what it is about the mans writing that really draws us in, as well as how the music of Bruce Springsteen weaves tangled webs throughout our lives.
www.recordsandbands.com
19. Spotlight on: Dookie
This is an album that's really important for Sam but certainly opened doors for Rob back in 1994 when he was still open to listening to stuff from outside of Seattle!
We discuss, among other things, the bands output over a nearly 30 year career, getting kids up on stage to play guitar and the concept of selling out.
The whole "are Green Day punk?" question gets knocked about, we trace the music of Green Day through to the mid 2000's emo scene and Rob has a hot take attributing the albums mega sales to the premature death of Kurt Cobain.
Its a proper rambling bulls***ty kind of a podcast this one but isn't that the point.
All your Records and Bands needs are here
18. Spotlight On: Manic Street Preachers. (The Early Years)
We're joined on this episode by long time friend, Jason Fletcher, to discuss the "early" career of Wales' finest export. Manic Street Preachers.
During the 90s the band released 5 albums along the way to becoming, arguably, the biggest band in the UK around the turn of the century.
On this episode we have a unique blend of Manic fans to discuss those albums and pick our favourite tracks in what we are calling a "Manic Draft-a-palooza". Our guest enjoys the later albums, co-host Sam admits to never wanting to hear them again (which is weird considering how much he has to say about them) and Rob describes them as the most unique and vital UK band of the 90s.
We touch on some of their stuff since 2000 but a lot of the conversation revolves around the 1994 masterpiece "The Holy Bible" which will almost certainly now get its own episode.
You can listen to the final playlist on Spotify and the full list will be available on www.recordsandbands.com

17. Spotlight on: Troublegum
This is one record where the age difference between the hosts doesn't matter as its just an absolute piece of work. Sam remembers me and our other brother just playing it relentlessly and, once driving licenses were obtained, going to Therapy gigs almost every other week!!!
This is a really important record and band for us, Sam admits to keeping it in a special box with loads of precious memories, reaching for it on important occasions while I've listened to as much as any other album I care to think of. So join us as we chat about one of the most important, underrated and vital bands of the last 30 years whose influence, craftsmanship and energy is still as strong in 2021 as it was in 1994.
www.recordsandbands.com
16. Special Guest: Jamie the Talking Dad
Jamies podcast discusses all the joys and challenges of being a father and recently had me on to compare stories of DIY midwifery. He joins us on Records and Bands to chat about Dad Rock, how music changes once the kids come along and how some tunes are forever linked to memories of our children.
Jamie and Sam really hit it off while we recorded, so much so that I felt like a third wheel at times, but I kind suspected that they'd have more in common musically as they are much closer in age and like loads of the same bands.
Anyway I relished the opportunity to rest my COVID ridden throat!!! Yes, I was struggling a bit while recording but we had put Jamie off a few times before and were desperate to keep this appointment so please forgive any coughing and spluttering on my part!
Don't expect any deep looks into any particular record on this one, its more of a general chat about records and bands but we had a blast.

15. Spotlight on: The Number of the Beast
Released to massive commercial success, The Number of the Beast redefined British Heavy Metal and Iron Maiden themselves. With a recently hired vocalist they set out on an ambitious, creative and theatrical journey that pushed them to worldwide mega stardom.
It also formed a long and lasting friendship between our host, Rob, and his guest for this episode., Leon Bateman.
We discuss some of the events leading up to the recording and release of the album and our own relationship with both the record and band before going through the album track by track.

14. Season 1 Wrap Up
It's the last episode of Season 1 of The Records and Bands Podcast so we get together to chat about all the stuff we've chatted about over the last few months. We deliver a report card on the albums we've discussed on the pod, touch on our favourite podcast episodes before we make a playlist of our favourite tracks from the 16 albums that have made up the season.
We've got big plans for Season 2 but we're taking a short break for the summer to plan and record more episodes and book some more guests to talk s*** about records and bands with.

13. Special Guest: Adam Bartlett
In this episode, Adam joins us on Zoom, all the way from Lagos, Nigeria, to talk about Plan B's The Defamation of Strickland Banks, Half Nelson by Groop Dogdrill and Divide and Exit from Sleaford Mods.
Along the way we touch on the blossoming of their relationship through mixtapes, weekend getaways to the Love Island (or was it the Isle of Wight) and whether angry shouty blokes make enjoyable music.
We do have a few sound and technical issues, which were quite frankly entirely avoidable and completely unforgivable but we'll endeavour to appease the wrath of the Nigerian Prince who keeps sending those emails. Maybe Adam can arrange a meet while he's out there. Anything for better internet!!!
Follow Records and Bands across social media here
12. Spotlight On: Kanye West
After listening to Watch the Throne for the first time (for last weeks podcast), I (Rob) took a tumble down a Kanye rabbit hole. Over one weekend I listened to "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy", "Yeezus" "Life of Pablo" "Ye" and "Jesus is King".
After hearing a decades worth of material over a few days I summoned Sam for an EMERGENCY PODCAST!!!
So armed with a few pages of notes and some sizzling hot takes I lay down some theories for confirmation/ridicule. Join us as we talk about the rapper as an artist, use of sexual imagery as metaphor, reacting to the whirlwind of celebrity, creating while managing bi-polar disorder, whether an artists background dictates their medium and other such arty bulls***.
Personally speaking this is our best episode yet, a spontaneous discussion about a truly important and divisive artist.
Find us everywhere else here
11. Record Trade: The Pixies & Kanye and Jay-Z
On this episode of Records and Bands, we chat for quite a while about So Much for the Afterglow by Everclear, the latest Yungblud record (ooo we're hard!) and daughter/niece Lillian makes a cameo appearance to talk about her favourite record (and Dads) Sour by Olivia Rodrigo.
After all of that we hear Sams thoughts on Doolittle by the Pixies after listening to it for the first time ever, we chat about some collaborations and supergroups before hearing Robs opinions on an album so far outside of his wheelhouse that, depending on the result, could have long lasting effects on the future of the podcast. That album, which Sam considers one of the best, is "Watch the Throne" by Kanye West and Jay-Z.
Everywhere you can find us here
10. Record Trade: Hard Fi & Ben Folds Five
This will come as no surprise to regular listeners but Rob is an absolutely massive fan of Ben Folds, so was really excited to hear his little brothers thoughts on his favourite artist, who is regularly heralded as the greatest songwriter of his generation. (Thats what Rob regularly states as fact anyway.)
We have a great chat about those amazing opening tracks from some great albums and manage to whittle them down to a "Top 10 Side A, Track 1" playlist. Apparently openers from live albums don't count but Nutshell from Alice in Chains Unplugged deserves a really special mention!
Later we talk about a band that Rob had pigeonholed into "S*** Indie Disco" but whose first album, Stars of CCTV, Sam just adores.
9. Special Guest: Alex Trezins
We discuss the self titled Blink-182 album from 2003 in some detail, the boys covering Blink while playing in their first band, The Navahoes, before we get onto the whole point of the podcast, talking s*** about records and bands. Artists like Kasabian and Arctic Monkeys get a good mention before we move onto another record on Sams list, Over the Counter Culture by The Ordinary Boys.
At some point we talk about their first foray into playing, their band The Navahoes, allegedly being plagiarised by Jessie J and then Alex drops a wonderful tale of his musical father and a physical altercation with the actual Morrissey!
Original Music this week by The Navahoes!
