015 - Cutting the Flesh
Here in Season 1, we’re taking a Journey through the Old Testament. In the ancient world, the making of covenant was publicly affirmed with a ritual act. In God’s covenant with Abraham, God institutes the ritual of circumcision as that sign. In this episode, Bryan examines the significance of circumcision in light of Abraham’s bigger story.
014 - The One-Sided Handshake
The ancient practice of a covenant is at the very heart of the Old Testament – and New -- as the name suggests. “Testament” is another word for “covenant.” In this episode, Bryan explores the ancient suzerain-vassal covenant treat and how it appears in God’s dealings with Abraham.
013 - A Flawed Hero
The Bible calls Abraham a hero of the faith. But he also blew it pretty bad at times as he tried to make things happen his own way. In episode 13, Bryan looks at how these stories emphasize the faithfulness of God to keep his promises no matter what.
012 - The Childless Father
God’s plan begins with a middle-aged couple unable to have children and yet God promised to turn them into a great nation! In this episode, Bryan continues the overview of Abraham’s story, the Genesis narrative, and looks more closely at God’s promise of a child.
011 - Head Out of Town
In our Journey through the Old Testament, Act 3 begins with Abraham and his family and focuses on the nation of Israel. This is the rest of the Old Testament. In this episode, Bryan gives some background about Abraham, where he came from, and his world-changing encounter with a unfamiliar God.

008 - Shiny Things That Bite
In this season, we’re taking a Journey through the Old Testament. In the Bible’s big story, Act 2 is humanity’s rebellion against God and his kingdom. What are we to make of the sneaky serpent and that tempting fruit in Genesis chapter 3? What does all this say about what sin is? In this episode, we tackle those questions, but a much simpler question stands behind it all, one we still must ask today.
007 – The Not-so-Magic Kingdom
Here in Season 1, we’re taking a Journey through the Old Testament. Act 1 of the Bible’s big story is the creation of God’s kingdom and his rule over that good world he made. In this episode, Bryan explores the idea of a kingdom and gives a simple but powerful picture of it across the whole Bible. Any kingdom has 3 things, all of which are present in Eden…and renewed at the end of the Bible. These 3 elements give us a picture we can see from beginning to end of the Bible’s story of creation, fall, and redemption.
006 – The Tale of Two Trees
Here in Season 1, we’re taking a Journey through the Old Testament. Ever noticed that Genesis 2 appears to tell a slightly different version of the creation story from Genesis 1? What’s going on there? In this episode, Bryan talks the fourth essential purpose for mankind’s creation found in the meaning of the Trees of Life and the Knowledge of Good and Evil.
005 – Seven Days That Made the World
004 - "In The Beginning": How Does That Work?
Here in Season 1, we’re taking a Journey through the Old Testament. What exactly is happening in the creation story in Genesis chapter 1? And why is it important to the Bible’s big story? In this episode, Bryan shares 4 common ways of explaining these 7 days of creation, some issues with each of these, and what the main focus of this narrative is going to be. This is the first of 3 parts looking at Act 1: Creation of the Bible's Big Story.
003 - Stories, Myth, and the Bible
Here in Season 1, we’re taking a Journey through the Old Testament. We often talk about the Bible as a story or the “Bible’s big story.” But what is the significance of thinking about the Old Testament and the Bible itself in this way? In this episode, Bryan explores the idea of the Bible as story and myth, a grand narrative that explains how the world works and why it is the way it is. But, as C.S. Lewis so famously said, the Bible is the one myth that happens to be true. We also look at the 6 simple parts of the Bible’s story and the main theological themes in the Old Testament that are the beginning of that story.
002 - Why That Land (Israel)?
Here in Season 1, we’re taking a Journey through the Old Testament. The story and message of the Old Testament is essential to the Christian life. Have you ever wondered why the Bible takes place in a small country like ancient Israel or why so much conflict occurs there?
Knowing something about the ancient world itself helps us better understand the Old Testament. In this episode, Bryan talks about the geographical and political setting of the Ancient Near East, the world and time in history in which the Old Testament takes place. And, more significantly, the strategic importance of this location as a part of God's plan to redeem his world.
001 - What is the Old Testament and why study it?
Here in Season 1, we’re taking a Journey through the Old Testament. The story and message of the Old Testament is essential to the Christian life. In this episode, Bryan talks about the reasons we should study the Old Testament – and some reasons people don’t – along with an introduction to the types of writings, structure, and timeline of the Old Testament.
