The episode where I say Goodbye
In this episode, I look at some lessons learned along the way, some behind-the-scenes, and my reasons for stopping the podcast.
Forgiveness 2.0
I have matured and grown in my views of forgiveness, so I wanted to re-address the topic before I close the podcast.
How does Scripture define it? How is it portrayed? Does it mean we take the relational hit for the sake of taking the hit?
Champion of Human Dignity: William Wilberforce
"You may choose to look the other way, but you can never say again that you did not know." What were some of the experiences and beliefs that shaped Wilberforce's success as an abolitionist?
Psalm 6 Amplified: A Psalm for those in deep grief
Excellent for those whose bodies and minds are showing the strain of grief and/or anxiety.
Pornography: An episode for those filmed, those who consume, and betrayed partners. Explicit.
This episode is explicit and is not intended for minors.
I speak to the connection between pornography and sex trafficking. Porn use has never been my battle, and I have never been married to an addict, so I reached out to two people who could speak into those aspects of the porn topic. Sarah McDugal speaks to betrayed partners. Find her work here: https://www.wildernesstowild.com/ or traumamamas.app/get. Andrew J. Bauman speaks to those (especially men) who consume. Find his work here: andrewjbauman.com or christiancc.org
Books mentioned in the course of the hour were the following:
Your Sexually Addicted Spouse, by Steffens & Mean
How Not to be an *ss, by Bauman
The Good Guy's Guide to Great Sex, by Gregoire & Gregoire
Leaders Eat Last, by Sinek
Leading with a Limp, by Allender
Try Softer, by Kolber
Engaging Church While Healing from Severe Church Pain, Pt. 2
How do you find truth? Related, but slightly different: how do you build healthy theology? How do I personally filter out theology or advocacy found online? How do you recognize healthy, unhealthy, or Pharisaical churches? What can I tell you about finding a healthy church, or dealing with anger or fear in regards to church?
Engaging Church While Healing from Severe Church Pain, Part 1 of 2
This is, by far, the most common topic behind the questions I received from audience members. Who is God? Is there room in the church for the broken? How does one not give up on American Christianity? How do we identify and relate to other believers after experiencing violence within religion?
Champion of Human Dignity: Harriet Tubman
Psalm 5 AMP
If you want to read along, I use the Amplified version.
Interview with Rebecca Davis
Relaunching: the re-introductory episode
My experience & views on doubt
When people (image-bearers of God) are unfaithful, cruel, or absent, it can begin to feel as if God Himself is that way. I don't know everything there is to know about doubt, but if you are struggling with it (as I have!), this might be a gentle discussion that you find refreshing.
Marc's Story: Interview with Marc Masoner
A story of what happens when people professing to love God abuse a child--and what happens when God meets you at the bottom of your spiral. Rated explicit. Marc has specifically requested no solicitation for anything related to his past as a pornography performer. Any and all solicitation is unwanted and will be considered harassment.
Domestic Violence: Interview with Rosanna Brubacker

Parenting after trauma: an Interview
Forgiveness Cliches Held Against Bible Stories
How many of these cliches have you heard? "Forgiveness brings healing." "Forgiveness brings restoration." "Forgiveness causes the other to come to repentance." "Forgiveness unlocks a cage, only you find that you are setting yourself free." How do these cliches stack up against Scripture? Hopefully, this will help church people who haven't been through a violent crime to be more truthful and gracious about the messy realities of our favorite forgiveness stories, and it will help survivors to confidently walk through the grief, lament, and legal process without trying to live up to false non-ideals.
Trauma and Marriage: Interview with Dale and Faith Ingraham
How do trauma and recovery impact marriage? What should the spouse of a survivor know or do? What can a survivor do to address their trauma so that it doesn't harm the marriage? What separates trauma-background marriages that make it from those that don't?
Secondary Victimization: Interview #2 with Jimmy Hinton
It is not an abuser and a victim in a bubble; there are people around the abuser, and people around the victim, who also get hurt in the process of abuse. What should we know about secondary victims? What resources are out there? Why do religious cliches fall flat?
Church, Abuse, Leadership, and Wisdom in the Face of the Unthinkable: Interview #1 with Jimmy Hinton
What would you do if your father, your church's former pastor, was found out to have sexually molested children for over 40 years? What would you do if you were the church's only leader, and had been in leadership for only two years?
This is one man's story. It is a grueling story of unusual wisdom in the face of immense pain.
Part 2: Rest--practical tips
In this episode, I address how to experience spiritual restfulness, physical rest, emotional rest, and mental rest. Be comfortable saying, "no," to good busy-ness in favor of high-quality productivity and high-quality rest. You were made for more than the rat race and perpetual restlessness.
Part 1: Response to Listener Q on rest
"I’m on a search for why the sabbath is such a big deal in the bible. My intuition says there’s a link between this and trauma and healing from trauma. Have any of you studied into this?" --Listener question on the Hope Beyond Trauma podcast group on Facebook.
I didn't find any research on Sabbath and trauma, but we do know that “In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.” Rest is necessary! In this episode, I discuss why the need for rest is amplified for trauma survivors, what the Sabbath is, and what rest is not.

Is Healing Possible? What does it look like?
Our view of this has an impact on how we as a community respond to survivors--and that, in turn, has an impact on how they recover. I explain this. I also ask church people some difficult questions. Click "support this show" to bring more episodes like this, and more interviews!

Grief, Lament, and the Psalms: Interview #1 with Jonathan Trotter
This is the first interview in a two-part series. What are the stages of grief? What should survivors know about grief? What's a five-minute test you can give your church to see how comfortable they are in walking through the difficult emotions associated with trauma? Jonathan is conversant in this subject, and you will benefit from his wisdom. Here's a link he mentions: https://www.alifeoverseas.com/an-empty-ocean-and-the-10-things-we-must-remember-about-grief/
Tell Me The Old, Old Story: the Gospel as it speaks both to guilt and to shame
If you've never heard the Gospel told through the lens of an honor/shame worldview, do yourself a favor and listen. For further study, I recommend http://honorshame.com/.

Terms and Conditions
ACEs questionnaire, PTSD, C-PTSD, PISD, RAD, and vicarious trauma; a little bit of knowledge of these terms can help you more accurately understand the people in your life who are hurting. In order to keep this under 30 minutes, I did not elaborate excessively on any of them. So much could be said about each term's history and research. This is an overview episode. If this episode intrigues you, and you want to study for yourself, I recommend that you start with the 2002 work by Dr. Felittle, referenced third in the list below. This episode is marked "explicit" for discussion of violent crimes.

Reporting a Crime: Interview with Hope Anne Dueck
Why is reporting important? Why do some victims never report? What can the friends, family, and church of victims do to assist in the reporting process? What about the Statute of Limitations in historical cases? Does a victim who no longer lives near the location of the crime need to physically go into the police station to report, or can they make a phone call? What can the family of a child victim expect? In some states, mandatory reporters have 24 hours to report a crime. Given that we live in the age of the internet, it is unwise to delay, using the full 24 hours. Why?
**Content labeled as 'explicit' due to discussions surrounding the topic of child sex abuse.
