Can We Fix Britain by Taxing Billionaires?
May 30, 202545:54
British Fish? Let's look at the truth of this UK-EU deal

British Fish? Let's look at the truth of this UK-EU deal

In this episode, I talk about Keir Starmer’s new deal with the EU and what it really means for the UK, especially for fishing, food exports, and everyday workers.

I start with fishing. For years, we were told that leaving the EU would give us back full control of our waters. But the truth is, a lot of our fishing rights are still in foreign hands. Over half of England’s quota is owned by companies from places like the Netherlands, Spain, and Iceland. These firms often run UK-registered boats, but the profits go abroad. Meanwhile, small local fishers, especially those with smaller boats, get very little of the catch.

Nigel Farage has slammed the new deal, saying we’ve given in to the EU. I look at it differently. Yes, EU boats will still be allowed in our waters until 2038, but in return, we’re getting less red tape when selling food to Europe. That’s important. Since Brexit, a lot of UK seafood businesses have struggled with delays and paperwork when trying to export things like langoustines and oysters. This deal could help fix that and bring some of the money back.

I also explain how fishing rights work. They’re not just handed out evenly. Over the years, they’ve been bought and sold like stocks. One Dutch company owns around 20 percent of England’s fishing rights. And five wealthy UK families own nearly a third of the UK’s total quota. That’s left many smaller boats and local communities out in the cold.

The deal could also help with labour shortages. It opens the door for more young people to work across the UK and EU, which might help farming and fishing businesses that are crying out for workers.

Towards the end, I talk about the politics behind it. Some people worry this means we’re still tied to EU rules. Others say it’s just common sense if we want to trade smoothly and avoid more damage. I don’t pretend to have all the answers, but I do think we need less shouting and more talking.

We also touch briefly on defence and how working with the EU could open up new chances for British companies, especially as Europe increases spending on security.

As always, I invite you to call in and share your views. This isn’t just about fish or trade deals. It’s about how we look after our own industries and whether we’re being honest with ourselves about what we really got from Brexit.

Will a 5% Visitor Levy Hurt Scotland's Tourist Economy? An Analysis

Will a 5% Visitor Levy Hurt Scotland's Tourist Economy? An Analysis

Welcome to a new episode of Richardson's Rubicon hosted by me, John Richardson. In this episode, I dive into the economic principle of price elasticity of demand (PED) and its potential implications for the tourist sector, focusing especially on the controversial topic of visitor levies, or tourist taxes.

I explore recent trends and data indicating a shift from serviced accommodations like hotels to more affordable, nonserviced options such as self-catering sites and campsites from 2022 to 2023. This reflects people's sensitivity to economic pressures. I'll share my analysis of how the introduction of a proposed visitor levy could impact the economy, including potential job losses and reduced economic impact, drawing on figures from various sources.

Throughout the episode, I explain the difference in economic outcomes between applying a percentage-based visitor levy versus a flat fee. This analysis is crucial for policymakers considering the best way to fund local councils without causing undue harm to the economy. Whether you're interested in economics, tourism, or public policy, this episode offers insights into a pressing issue affecting Scotland's tourist industry. Enjoy the show, and feel free to engage with the discussion on our website or through email!

The Ugly Truth about the Visitor Levy in Scotland

The Ugly Truth about the Visitor Levy in Scotland

Right, let’s cut to the chase. On the latest Richardson’s Rubicon, I tore into this new Visitor Levy Scotland’s rolled out. Frankly, it’s infuriating, and I won’t sugarcoat it.

First things first: don’t let them spin this as a “tourist tax.” It’s a charge on everyone staying in accommodation—yes, even your cousin from Manchester here for a weekend. And mark my words, every council in Scotland will slap this on, padding their budgets with CoSLA, the SNP, and local authorities nodding it through.

It's completely unlike tourist taxes. It's a percentage rate that scales upward the longer to stay somewhere and in higher quality places, it's off the scale.

https://argyllandbutevisitorlevy.com/argyll-and-bute-visitor-levy-why-a-percentage/

I’ve run a B&B for years—I know taxes are part of the game. But this rate they’re pushing? It’s outrageous. The roads near my place are riddled with potholes, services are collapsing, yet council bosses pocket pay rises while the rest of us cough up more. Where’s the logic?

Here’s the kicker, though: this levy isn’t just about money. It’s overreach. Council officials demanding the right to march into my property, inspect my books? Not on my watch. And the paperwork they want? Half of it’s irrelevant to calculating the tax!

What really grinds my gears? They’ve sidelined the trade bodies representing accommodation providers. We’re the ones keeping Scottish tourism afloat, yet our concerns are brushed aside while the SNP and CoSLA fiddle with their grand plans. Short-sighted doesn’t even begin to cover it.

And let’s talk consequences. Jack up accommodation costs, and visitors will vanish overnight. Domestic tourism will plummet, and Scotland’s economy will take a hit no spreadsheet in Holyrood can fix.

So here’s the plan: push back. Bombard every public consultation, buttonhole your local councillor, make your voice heard. And if any of them fancy defending this shambles on my show? I’ll give them airtime—and a fair hearing, though they’ll need to bring a strong case.

Right, I’ll wrap up here. Swing by the website if you’ve got thoughts. Cheers,

John

Insights into the New Verification Process on Bluesky

Insights into the New Verification Process on Bluesky

Welcome to a new, quick episode of Richardson's Rubicon podcast titled "Bluesky Verification." I'm your host, John Richardson. In this episode, we explore security protocols, identity verification, and user experience on social platforms.

We kick off with an analysis of different social media verification methods, with an emphasis on Bluesky's unique approach. I dissect the transition from Twitter's celebrity-focused paradigm to the pay-to-verify model of "X". The issue of fake accounts is underlined, emphasising the weaknesses of existing models.

Attention now turns to Bluesky's innovative "domain verification" process, a key feature of their groundbreaking AT protocol. I describe how it promises decentralisation, interoperability, and enhanced security, making your identity more transferable and giving a smoother experience on the internet.

https://atproto.com/guides/overview

This innovative verification method is illustrated through a compelling example featuring Sky reporter Sam Coates and a questionable account posing as Kemi Badenoch.

https://bsky.app/profile/samcoatessky.bsky.social/post/3lb6eyk6bp224

I shed light on the intricacies of the verification process on Bluesky, how organisations can manage multiple users using subdomains, and how critical user-friendly instructions can be to a successful transition. The notion of domain name impersonation, also known as typosquatting - a potential threat with roots in the 90s internet era - is also discussed.

https://bsky.social/about/blog/4-28-2023-domain-handle-tutorial

The episode pushes on to emphasise the importance of user education and advises large organisations such as Sky News, BBC, the Houses of Parliament and others to publish Bluesky handles on their websites, reinforcing two layers of verification. With my experience in mind, I share insights into successful countermeasures such as proactive domain monitoring, legal protections, usage of Secure Socket Layer certificates and registering variations of company names.

I end the episode with an open invitation, urging listeners to actively participate in the podcast, bridging the gap between myself and you, the listener. The discussion can move beyond the IT realm, incorporating an array of topics chosen by you. Join me, not just as listeners, but as contributors, igniting stimulating conversations and expanding our collective understanding. Escape to EverQuest: Camaraderie and Imposter Syndrome

Escape to EverQuest: Camaraderie and Imposter Syndrome

In S2E18 of Richardson's Rubicon, hosts John Richardson and Nate Stinehour delve into the thrilling and enriching intricacies of the gaming community within the context of EverQuest, an iconic MMORPG that's been captivating players for over 25 years. Underscoring the sense of companionship and support fostered among community members, the hosts share personal triumphs and challenges in the game, creating an engaging discussion for both veteran gamers and newcomers alike.

At the heart of their conversation is the love of groups and the fear of not finding one, and dealing with feelings of inadequacy in moments of comparison. The hosts' candid dialogue about imposter syndrome in the face of expansive game knowledge offers a relatable element to the podcast. They urge listeners to embrace curiosity, pointing out that seeking help within the community is a strength and an avenue for continuous learning.

This episode also provides valuable insights into the unique characteristics of different gaming classes, particularly druids, wizards, and paladins. The hosts highlight the importance of selecting a class based on personal enjoyment and play style, rather than bending to opinions from other players. They also delve into the interesting dynamics of the gaming economy, underscoring the charm of exploring zones for valuable drops instead of relentlessly chasing top-tier gear from early stages.

Providing a deeper analysis, the hosts contrast the unique mechanics and complexities of EverQuest with the more streamlined nature of modern games. Nostalgia, they note, can be a powerful tool for attracting new players to a game that remains a niche favourite. In the spirit of community bonding and engagement, they express excitement for an upcoming PvP arena event.

Later on, they delve into the challenges of balancing their love for the game with their real-life responsibilities. John shares his struggles as a possibly confused introverted individual with limited gaming time, while Nate speaks about memorable moments of bonding and support within the community.

As the episode wraps up, they plan an "ask us anything" session, walk listeners through gaming confessions and experiences documented in Reddit posts, and share their contact information for listeners keen on joining their adventure.

Overall, this episode of Richardson's Rubicon forms a deep and vibrant tribute to the EverQuest gaming community, treating listeners to a profoundly personal and informative experience.

Escape to Everquest: It's about the journey!

Escape to Everquest: It's about the journey!

An insightful dive into the world of EverQuest: Comparing Classic and Modern versions, the struggles with in-game experiences, and the effects on the gaming community.

Introduction

As the world of gaming continues to evolve, so do the demands and expectations of the players. In the most recent episode of Richardson's Rubicon, podcasters John Richardson and Nate Stinehour explore what many fans of the iconic EverQuest game have come to know as the 'Classic vs. Modern' debate, comparing the earlier versions to the modern variants of the game.

Complexities and Challenges in Gameplay

In this candid discussion, both hosts reveal prevailing issues such as the difficulty in finding groups on specific servers. They take a significant stance on 'boxing,' talking about its impact on the game community and hint at their dissatisfaction with in-game currency and pay-to-win practices. This creates a broader dialogue around gameplay complexities, inviting listeners to share their unique experiences.

Power Race and Gaming Experience

Another aspect of the podcast episode lies in their conversation around the rush to max out endgame levels. They note that the pressure to reach maximum level can turn the game into something resembling work and discuss frustration with advice given to new players.

Subsequently, the game’s pacing across different servers, the disregard for content created for lower levels, and the efforts put into the game are thrown at the forefront of the conversation.

The Shift in Game Dynamics

The focus then shifts to the various changes in the gaming experience. Both Richardson and Stinehour recount changes in gaming mechanics and an evident gap between those who still relish the classic versions and those leaning towards modern versions for better rewards and faster progress. They discuss the availability of gear and the improved gear in live versions, leading to contrasting player experiences.

Preserving Classic Content

Regardless of the sophisticated elements modernisation brings, there is a definitive nostalgic appeal to classic content which some players definitely prefer. Dissecting this phenomenon, they mention the reduced incentive to engage in older content due to the superior gear .

Developers' Dilemma

One memorable bit from the podcast touches on host frustration over lack of communication and response from developers, specifically around direction.

Conclusion

This intriguing look into the world of EverQuest truly confirms that the gaming universe is as rich and complex as our reality. .

The nuanced perspective the hosts offer certainly confirms that the 'Classic vs. Modern' debate will continue to stir passions, whether you're venturing into EverQuest or any other gaming realm. While the evolution in gameplay mechanics and dynamics characterises our technological progress, the love for maintaining authentic classic content continues to thrive in the hearts of many players, proving that nostalgia is indeed a subtle, yet powerful force in the gaming world.

Stay tuned for future episodes, and don’t forget to check our social media channels and our website for more exciting content. Game on!

They delve into their passion for the classic 25-year-old game, drawing listeners into the intricacies, stratagem, and sheer adrenaline rush that MMORPG game offers.

Dorian kick-starts the narrative, recounting thrilling instances of battles - where killing a dragon was the shared victory of the surviving rogues amongst a group of dozens. Simultaneously, Austin pairs the high stakes of a game phase to a high-level chess match – emphasizing the rush and reward of strategizing and surviving PvP battles in the Sol B setting.

As the narrative advances, listeners also gain valuable advice for new PvP entrants - starting with a caster class and always having a friend at hand. The episode isn't all battles and bloodlust; it also explores the commendable spirit within the EverQuest community focused on preventing ganking behavior and protecting gamers.

Notably, the guests share the ambitious plans to unite blue and red servers to create one hub sparking engaging dialogues about balancing PvE and PvP mindsets and preserving order within the gameplay.

Dorian and Austin delve further into the workings of the Reign of Thule server, which has been a labor of love in the community for over six years. Inspired by the quality of life improvements in TLPs, it transcends conventional gameplay by incorporating quality of life features, skins, cosmetics, XP potions, and events while maintaining the classic PvE content.

The server has seen impactful improvements such as a corpse summoner and reduced corpse decay time in addition to group XP bonuses to promote team play on a PvP server. As the hosts and guests furrow into the unique characteristics of Reign of Thule, listeners learn about elaborate mechanisms such as looting, splitting rewards, PvP announcements, binding camping prevention, and the equality of the server's leaderboard system across player classes.

In conclusion, this episode of Richardson's Rubicon presents an immersive journey into an online gaming universe where its guests, Dorian and Austin, proudly share their rich experiences and aspirations for the server. Their tales are a testament to PvP’s vibrant culture - a realm where intense battles, gripping strategies, survival, and camaraderie seamlessly blend. Their goal?
