Karen Moncrieff | Part 3

This week Alex & Ryan conclude their talk with director, writer, & actor Karen Moncrieff in the final part of a three-part series.

Karen received the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ prestigious Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting in 1998 for her coming of age drama Blue Car, which later became Moncrieff’s feature film debut, premiering at Sundance in 2002 where it was acquired by Miramax Films. Moncrieff’s second feature The Dead Girl starring Rose Byrne, Toni Collette, Kerry Washington, James Franco, and Josh Brolin premiered at the AFI film festival in 2006 and was nominated for three Spirit Awards including Best Feature and Best Director. The Dead Girl was selected for competition at Deauville, where it won the Grand Prix. Other films include 2017 LAFF Audience Award winner The Keeping Hours starring Lee Pace, Carrie Coon, currently streaming on Netflix. Television credits include Escaping the Madhouse, starring Christina Ricci and Judith Light, which won a Women’s Image Award for best Made for Television Movie. Past television directing credits include Six Feet Under, 13 Reasons Why, and Home Before Dark.

Moncrieff lives in Silverlake, California with her husband, her daughter, two dogs, and five size week old foster kittens. When procrastinating, she likes watching baseball, playing backgammon, and thrifting.

The film we will discuss is The Piano (1993), directed by Jane Campion.

Grace is committed to her development as an actor and has trained with Cathryn Hartt, Del Shores, Sharron Garrison, and now studies with Ice Mrozek. Olly Blackburn | Part 2

Olly Blackburn | Part 2

Welcome to Part 2 of our conversation with Olly Blackburn.

Olly is an award-winning film director and screenwriter. He trained as an historian and after spending time as a journalist and copywriter found himself working in feature films, television and commercials.

His films include Donkey Punch (Warp Films) and Kristy (The Weinstein Company) and many shorts which have played at major festivals including Telluride, Sundance, Edinburgh, Austin and London. He’s known for cinematic breadth across his work from the cult notoriety of Donkey Punch (released
in the US on Magnolia’s Six Shooter imprint with Let the Right One In)

Olly’s feature debut, the controversial thriller Donkey Punch premiered at the Sundance Film Festival – where a Salt Lake City audience member hyperventilated from shock – and has been shown in competition at festivals around the world including Edinburgh, Austin, Amsterdam and Sitges. It was heralded as “expertly made and painfully tense” by The Guardian and branded “the vilest film ever made” by The Mail’s Amanda Platell while in the same paper Baz Bamigboye called for more British films like it, writing that “director Olly Blackburn has a sure, confident touch”. Go figure. The film also has its own Trivial Pursuit question & no, it’s not the question you think it is.

His second feature film Kristy was produced by The Weinstein Company, Electric City Entertainment and David Kirschner/LA Sienega Films and premiered at the 2014 London Film Festival. Sight & Sound called it “beautifully shot” with a story set “within the context of contemporary online anomie and a broader debate about chance versus causality” and mega-fansite iHorror named it Best Horror Sleeper of 2014.

The film we will discuss with Olly is Spike Lee's Crooklyn (1994).

The Industry | When Nicholas Ray Made a Student Film

The Industry | When Nicholas Ray Made a Student Film

Welcome to How I Got Greenlit.

Since our launch in June, we’ve had such a wonderful outpouring of support for the show from all ends of the business, including our contemporaries in podcasting. We connected recently with one of our favorites, Dan Delgado from The Industry. And this week we have a special episode for you in the form of a feed drop.

With every listen, The industry takes a closer look at the lesser known forgotten stories of movie history.

In “When Nicholas Ray Made a Student Film,” the episode describes Director, Nicholas Ray as having “demons of drinking, gambling and drug abuse that led him on a destructive course. With no one willing to hire him any more, he took a job teaching film in upstate New York.” This is the story of what happened.

On a personal note Ray had a big influence on my cinematic journey, including (but absolutely not limited to) In A Lonely Place (Humphrey Bogart), Johnny Guitar  (Joan Crawford, Sterling Hayden), and James Dean’s 2nd film Rebel Without A Cause. When I moved to Los Angeles, the first place I visited, I mean straight off the 101 and up Los Feliz Blvd, was the Griffith Park Observatory. From March 28th to May 26th, 1955, Nicolas Ray shot Rebel, with one pivotal scene at the Observatory.  I was drawn to that place in history where actors James Dean & Corey Allen, with a gang of others looking on, including Dennis Hopper (in his first film role), have a knife fight on the corner property.

Here is Dan Delgado with Alex Keledjian, and Ryan Gibson in conversation, followed by the Industry's presentation of "When Nicholas Ray Made a Student Film."

Kelly Lynn Reiter

Kelly Lynn Reiter

Actor, Producer, & Writer Kelly Lynn Reiter joins us today on How I Got Greenlit. As an actor, she currently stars with Bruce Willis in Deadlock, recently produced 3 Days In Malay, and has written for NBC's reboot of Quantum Leap

Kelly Lynn Reiter is a small town girl who fell in love with big dreams. From the time she was a toddler, she was obsessed with Lucille Ball, John Ritter, and the thrill of performance. With a young theatre background, and singing professionally at the age of 5, Kelly moved briefly through modeling and into her passion, acting. At age 14, she landed her first large movie role. She started college in bio medical engineering at UNC Chapel Hill at age 15 in order to follow her dreams to Los Angeles at 18. Since then, it's been nothing but drive and dedication that has kept her working steadily. Her MMA training, singing, song writing and guitar talents, along with standup comedy and improv, have made possible her close to 50 projects. She has played the good girl, the bad girl and even the alien girl but no matter what, when she is on set she is smiling and when she's not on set, she's figuring out the next time she can be. She can usually be found in fuzzy socks, a Will Ferrell shirt, and most definitely a smile.
