How are strong support systems vital for mental health management?

In this week's bonus episode, Sarah is joined by two very special guests, Melissa Duncan and Jihan Gabart who are the founders of SoMyPolar Inc.

SoMypolar INC consists of Melissa Duncan and Jihan Gabart. We are a nonprofit organization that services the mental health community. Melissa is diagnosed with more than one mental health illness and chooses to live a life more significant than what society portrays as possible. Her diagnosis was given over ten years ago, consisting of bipolar, OCD, and schizoaffective disorder.

Jihan is currently her caregiver, a role that she was thrown into after witnessing the struggles of her childhood friend. A role unfamiliar for both embarked them on a journey. It catapulted them into a movement to fight stigmas and shed light on the life of the two, showing a great example of when people love others with mental illness and what it can do! 

Join these ladies as they discuss the power of supporting loved ones who are managing mental health conditions, how friendship plays a crucial role in psychological recovery, the role of caregivers in the healing process, and how mental health stigmas can be dismantled through raising awareness of these issues in various communities.

Embracing Mental Wellness in the Black Community (feat. Dr. Nicole Washington)

How can we encourage more mental health treatment in the Black community?

In honor of Black History Month, this week's bonus episode features an enlightening conversation between Sarah and esteemed guest, Dr. Nicole Washington.

Dr. Nicole Washington is a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana where she attended Southern University and A&M College. After receiving her BS degree, she moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma to matriculate at the Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed residency in Psychiatry at the University of Oklahoma in Tulsa and a masters degree in Public Health through the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Since completion of her residency training, Dr. Washington has spent most of her career caring for and being an advocate for those who are not typically consumers of mental health services, namely underserved communities, those with severe mental illness and high performing professionals.

With a passion for educating others about mental illness, she speaks on a variety of topics to colleagues and the general public. Through her private practice, podcast, speaking and writing, she seeks to provide education in efforts to decrease the stigma associated with psychiatric illness. 

Join these ladies as they talk about how Dr. Nicole developed her career as a mental health professional, her journey with her mental health and how that might’ve influenced her decision to become a mental health professional, what her views are on the “Strong Black Man or Woman” facade and how people in the Black community can become more comfortable in seeking mental health services.

Ally is a Canadian poet, musician, and BPD (borderline personality disorder) advocate who has called Winnipeg, Manitoba home since birth. Through raw and real poetic storytelling, she has a vision to embolden the healing journeys of people with Borderline everywhere by sharing her lived experience. To Ally, nothing holds more power than the solidarity of like-minded souls with one mutual goal: overcoming hardship via self-compassion.
In addition to her debut poetry collection A Generation Of Sunflowers and second book Bloom, Ally has been published in Dipity Literary Magazine's first edition (Human Typewriters from Around The World). She has sold copies of her work internationally and can be found in local bookstores in Winnipeg. When Ally isn't writing you can find her building Lego, spending time with her cat or avidly researching various topics. She intends to break stigma surrounding Borderline Personality Disorder one copy of A Generation Of Sunflowers and Bloom at a time.

In honor of Black History Month, Sarah is joined by esteemed guest, Dr. Christina Edmondson. Dr. Christina Edmondson is an educator. She holds a PhD in counseling psychology and an MS in family therapy. A certified cultural intelligence facilitator with experience in nonprofit, higher education, and corporate sectors, Dr. Edmondson often consults with organizations about diversity and equity, as well as mental health and faith issues. Her work and insights have been covered in the Atlantic, the Guardian, Essence, and CBS News. She is also the co-host of the Truth's Table Podcast, which elevates the voices of Black women and explores topics such as embracing blackness, expressing faith, and engaging in racial liberation. 

In today's episode, Sarah and Dr. Christina talk about the effects of church hurt on the Black community, how to identify racial trauma in predominantly white churches, the importance of revolutionizing blackness in light of the Western ideals of modern Christianity, and how to confront these issues with grace and hope for internal healing. Coleman is Professor of Africana Studies at the University of Delaware.  She spent over ten years in graduate theological education at Claremont School of Theology and Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago.  Answering her call to ministry at age 19, Dr. Coleman brings her experiences in evangelical Christianity, black church traditions, global ecumenical work, and indigenous spirituality to her discussions of religion. Dr. Coleman is the author or editor of six books and several articles that focus on the role of faith in addressing critical social and philosophical issues. 

Her memoir Bipolar Faith shares her life-long dance with trauma and depression, and how she discovers a new and liberating vision of God. Her book Making a Way Out of No Way is required reading at leading theological schools around the country. Dr. Coleman co-hosted the web series, “Octavia Tried To Tell Us: Parable for Today’s Pandemic.” Coleman speaks widely on mental wellness, navigating change, religious diversity, and religious responses to intimate partner violence.

She is passionate about helping believers grow in their full identity in Christ and come into a deeper revelation of God's love for them.  She is the convener of Beautifully Rooted in Christ conference, an annual conference targetted at women to help them deepen their roots in Christ and bring glory to God. She is also the convener of GLOW (Gracious, Loving and Outstading Women) community for christian women living in North America. When she is not sharing the gospel, she is fundraising for a charity that helps to relieve and prevent hunger in Canada.

Welcome to another episode of Rough Edges!  This week, Sarah is joined by special guest, JaQuasia Vandross. JaQuasia is the Founding CEO & President of Black Girls Can Heal Inc. She currently serves as a Clinical Coordinator, providing underserved youth and families in the community and foster care with affordable therapy services. She is a 2016 Mercy College graduate with a B.S. in Psychology. She later graduated from Mercy College in 2020 with an M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. She also has a certification in helping clients with Alcoholism and Substance Abuse.  Join these ladies as they talk about the importance of open communication in relationships, how youth relationships have similar patterns to adult relationships, and how to effectively communicate boundaries with your friends and loved ones.
