The Power of Strong Support Systems (feat. Melissa Duncan & Jihan Gabart)
How are strong support systems vital for mental health management?
In this week's bonus episode, Sarah is joined by two very special guests, Melissa Duncan and Jihan Gabart who are the founders of SoMyPolar Inc.
SoMypolar INC consists of Melissa Duncan and Jihan Gabart. We are a nonprofit organization that services the mental health community. Melissa is diagnosed with more than one mental health illness and chooses to live a life more significant than what society portrays as possible. Her diagnosis was given over ten years ago, consisting of bipolar, OCD, and schizoaffective disorder.
Jihan is currently her caregiver, a role that she was thrown into after witnessing the struggles of her childhood friend. A role unfamiliar for both embarked them on a journey. It catapulted them into a movement to fight stigmas and shed light on the life of the two, showing a great example of when people love others with mental illness and what it can do!
Join these ladies as they discuss the power of supporting loved ones who are managing mental health conditions, how friendship plays a crucial role in psychological recovery, the role of caregivers in the healing process, and how mental health stigmas can be dismantled through raising awareness of these issues in various communities.

Embracing Mental Wellness in the Black Community (feat. Dr. Nicole Washington)
How can we encourage more mental health treatment in the Black community?
In honor of Black History Month, this week's bonus episode features an enlightening conversation between Sarah and esteemed guest, Dr. Nicole Washington.
Dr. Nicole Washington is a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana where she attended Southern University and A&M College. After receiving her BS degree, she moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma to matriculate at the Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed residency in Psychiatry at the University of Oklahoma in Tulsa and a masters degree in Public Health through the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Since completion of her residency training, Dr. Washington has spent most of her career caring for and being an advocate for those who are not typically consumers of mental health services, namely underserved communities, those with severe mental illness and high performing professionals.
With a passion for educating others about mental illness, she speaks on a variety of topics to colleagues and the general public. Through her private practice, podcast, speaking and writing, she seeks to provide education in efforts to decrease the stigma associated with psychiatric illness.

It was only after a devastating abortion that she opened her heart to the only One who could love her the way she'd been longing for. God led her to complete her PhD in Christian counseling and then to discover everything she knew about scientific brain retraining was coded in His Word.

She has sold copies of her work internationally and can be found in local bookstores in Winnipeg. She holds a PhD in counseling psychology and an MS in family therapy. A certified cultural intelligence facilitator with experience in nonprofit, higher education, and corporate sectors, Dr. Edmondson often consults with organizations about diversity and equity, as well as mental health and faith issues. Coleman is Professor of Africana Studies at the University of Delaware. She spent over ten years in graduate theological education at Claremont School of Theology and Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. Answering her call to ministry at age 19, Dr. Coleman brings her experiences in evangelical Christianity, black church traditions, global ecumenical work, and indigenous spirituality to her discussions of religion. Dr. Coleman is the author or editor of six books and several articles that focus on the role of faith in addressing critical social and philosophical issues.
Her memoir Bipolar Faith shares her life-long dance with trauma and depression, and how she discovers a new and liberating vision of God. Her book Making a Way Out of No Way is required reading at leading theological schools around the country. Dr. Coleman co-hosted the web series, “Octavia Tried To Tell Us: Parable for Today’s Pandemic.” Coleman speaks widely on mental wellness, navigating change, religious diversity, and religious responses to intimate partner violence.
