Rupture Reading: Dot Com-munism: Rejecting the corporate web & building an internet for the people
Hi everyone and welcome back to Rupture Radio! This week we're reading Dot Com-monism by Cian McGrath. In this piece, Cian McGrath looks at the changing relationship between the left and the internet. The left has utilised the internet to develop consciousnesses, organise protests and effect change. This piece argues however that we need a deeper analysis and asks what an ecosocialist internet would look like?

Welcome back to Rupture Radio!
This week we have a reading of Sarah Frazer's article from issue 7 of Rupture where she makes the case for full legalization of drugs. Frazer challenges conventional thinking on the subject of drug legislation and argues that decriminalization does not go far enough to help drug users and wider society. If we are going to have a sensible, ethical and compassionate drug policy, we must topple capitalism.

Following a new intro from Cian, meandering through new years day thoughts, we are re-run a previous interview with sociologist Laurence Cox to discuss the bane of every activist's existence - burnout. The pair outline where burnout stems from, the ways in which it changes how we organise, and what steps we can take on a personal and organisational level to go about countering and preventing it.

Should we ally with Green Capitalists? No- Rupture Reading
In this episode we feature a reading of the article "Should we ally with 'green capitalists'? No'" by RISE member Diana O' Dwyer in which she explores the current climate crisis and the dilemma faced by socialists over whether or not to support reforms driven by capitalists in the fight against climate change, or is this a short sighted strategy that compromises long term goals for short term gains?
This article argues against such allyship, focusing on capitalisms inherent inability to deal with the climate crisis. Instead we should be fighting for an alternate, eco-socialist strategy built on uniting the transformative power of the global working class and the importance of uniting various movements for environmental, economic and social justice change.

International debate on the war in Ukraine, w/ RISE, Tempest, Anticapitalistas & MES/PSOL
The war in Ukraine has sparked intense discussion and debate among socialists and Marxists worldwide about how to understand and respond to this war. Should socialists support or oppose NATO governments sending weapons and military aid to the Ukrainian government? What is an internationalist and socialist strategy to avoid a catastrophic nuclear conflict, end this war, and defend the interests of the working class and the democratic right to self determination?
To facilitate this debate, MORE organised a roundtable discussion with representatives of other socialist groupings. Marxists internationally have generally taken two different perspectives. While there is general agreement that this war involves questions of self-determination of Ukraine Russian imperialism, and Western imperialism, there has been significant disagreements about what conclusions should be drawn. Some argue that socialists around the globe should support the struggle for self-determination of Ukraine and therefore support military aid by the US and other Western countries; others argue that in this inter-imperialist proxy war socialists, for example in the US, have to oppose Biden's billions in military aid to the pro-capitalist, pro-NATO Zelensky government.
Based on mutual respect for the different opinions of Marxists, this debate had representatives of both sides with the aim of clarifying the issues and contributing to a better Marxist understanding of the challenges involved.

Debating the War in Ukraine - Imperialism Today by Paul Murphy
The war in Ukraine has sparked intense discussion and debate among socialists and Marxists worldwide about how to understand and respond to this war. Should socialists support or oppose NATO governments sending weapons and military aid to the Ukrainian government? What is an internationalist and socialist strategy to avoid a catastrophic nuclear conflict, end this war, and defend the interests of the working class and the democratic right to self determination? This week we have an audio version of an article by Paul Murphy in Rupture on this issue.
Paul is speaking at an international roundtable debate on the war in Ukraine this Sunday December 4th at 6pm Irish time, find out more here: https://cutt.ly/ukraineroundtable
Read Paul's article here: https://rupture.ie/articles/imperialism-today
Issue 9 of Rupture is out soon, and will include a critical response to this article from fellow PBP member Ollie Power. The special feature of this issue is on 'Carnival of Reaction' looking at the partition of Ireland and it's impacts on the centenary of the formation of the Irish Free State. We will have a special launch party for the new issue on Saturday December 10th in Connolly Books in Temple Bar Dublin at 7pm, with wine, a panel discussion and a special rupture radio live recording - make sure to come along and pick up your copy.

Brazil: Bolsonaro beaten, but Bolsonarism still a threat w/Luciana Genro
Brazil's far-right, Trump-like president Bolsonaro has been booted from office, beaten in the recent election by centre-left candidate Lula da Silva. This week Cian sits down with Brazilian socialist MP Luciana Genro to discuss Bolsonaro's time in power, how he was beaten, what Lula's government will bring and what the socialist left is doing to continue the fight against Bolonarism and fascism.
Luciana is a leading member of the Party of Socialism and Liberty (PSOL), a pluralist socialist party in Brazil, and she is part of the Marxist group 'Socialist Left Movement' (MES) within that. Read more of the analysis of the election here:

The liberating influence of the Transitional Programme - Audiobook
This week's episode is slightly different - we recorded an audiobook version of an old talk from revolutionary Marxist theoretician George Breitman. This is an excerpt from a whole series of talks Breitman delivered in 1975 looking at the method behind the so-called 'Transitional Programme', which Trotsky advocated for in the 1930s as a way to link the day-to-day struggles we are involved in, to the need for a socialist transformation of society.
Breitman demonstrates how the 'transitional method' transformed the understanding and approach of himself and other socialists, how it helped to clarify the difference between tactics and principles, and how socialists should relate to liberal illusions working class may have. It is an old talk, but a favourite, and definitely one very relevant to socialists today.
Check out the full talk, and two more as part of the series, available here: https://www.marxists.org/history/etol/document/swp-us/idb/swp-1970-76-db/v33n05-jun-1975-disc-bul.pdf

Bonus: The case for eco-socialist degrowth - meeting recording
This week we have a bonus episode - a recording from a live public meeting Rupture organised with RISE on the case for eco-socialist degrowth.
Capitalist growth is destroying our life support systems. Every single year the material taken from the Earth to feed the insatiable capitalist appetite for profits grows larger and larger and the waste spewing into the atmosphere, land, rivers, and sea grows bigger and bigger. The latest IPCC reports make clear that we have "a brief and rapidly closing window of opportunity to secure a liveable and sustainable future for all".
However, climate action has to be more than “saving the environment” and ensuring a safe future. It also must ensure we’re building a different society that delivers a better life for all, in particular for all those most impacted by poverty, deprivation, and insecure conditions.
In this meeting, we discuss the case for eco-socialist degrowth, which is “a planned downscaling of energy and resource use to bring the economy back into balance with the living world in a safe, just and equitable way."
SPEAKERS
Stefania Barca - Distinguished Researcher "Beatriz Galindo", University of Santiago de Compostela (ES); and the author of many books and articles including 'The Labor(s) of Degrowth', Forces of Reproduction and Towards a Political Economy of Degrowth
Paul Murphy - TD for the eco-socialist party People Before Profit and a member of the revolutionary socialist network, RISE; and regular contributor to Rupture Magazine and Rupture Radio podcast and co-author of 'The necessity of ecosocialist degrowth'.
Eco-Socialist Degrowth? w/ Paul Murphy
This week we sat down to discuss the ideas of Eco-Socialist Degrowth.

War on Neutrality - the Marxist case for defending Irish Neutrality
This week Cian sits down with Rupture regular Diana O'Dwyer to discuss the government's war on neutrality, and the Marxist case for defending it.
Diana recently helped write the PBP Neutrality Bill which would have enshrined neutrality in the constitution and barred the government from joining NATO or other military alliances. It was narrowly defeated in the Dail, after the Greens broke with their previous position and voted it down.
We talk about why we socialists must oppose the attempts to present NATO as some sort of peace force, and why we should defend the idea of Irish Neutrality, and push for a consistent anti-imperialist, anti-war approach.

Venti Solidarity - Interview with Starbucks worker unionising in the US
This week Cian sits down with Starbucks worker Laila Dalton about her experience trying to unionise her Starbucks shop in Pheonix Arizona (USA), and socialist author and activist Alex Stout who has written about the US-wide Starbucks unionisation drive.
Since the first Starbucks unoinised last December, oer 150 stores across America have filed for union elections. Workers are getting organised, but so are the bosses, with a new union-busting CEO brought in and major attempts to intimidate workers.
Show your support by donating to the Solidarity fund started by the Pheonix Metro Starbucks workers: https://www.gofundme.com/f/phoenix-metro-starbucks-solidarity-fund
You can see the video mentioned here: https://perfectunion.us/leaked-union-busting-footage/
