I also go over the acronym CHIMES which explains the 6 reasons people slip and give examples of how you can scientifically measure how safe areas are and what you can to do to receive the best outcomes possible.

If you'd like to arrange a 50% off slip test, contact myself or my team on any of the methods below:

Safety words to live by for Christmas 2021, with Paul O’Neill

Safety words to live by for Christmas 2021, with Paul O’Neill

Have you heard the story of Paul O’Neill, former-CEO of Alcoa…?

He increased profit at his company by 7X, through safety.

O'Neill took over as CEO in 1987, following some depressed performance under the previous management team

But the new appointment nearly fell off the rails as soon as he opened his mouth...

His opening line at a shareholder meeting:

“I want to talk to you about worker safety”

Not what investors were expecting, or used to hearing from CEOs

But what happened?

Over his tenure, he focussed relentlessly on safety management

This was his – and the company’s – sole focus

Over 15 years, days of work lost due to staff injuries fell by 90%

Many see safety as a cost

But O’Neill proved it is an investment

Net profit increased from $200m to $1.48bn. Profit up 7X!!!

The lesson?

Proactive safety & risk management powers business performance

As O’Neill himself said: “safety is not a priority, it’s a precondition”

Listen in to a clip from a speech O’Neill gave and get a sense for his philosophy on this special, festive edition of the Safety And Risk Success Podcast with Christian Harris.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas!

Making footwear safer and more sustainable with James Abbott

Making footwear safer and more sustainable with James Abbott

James Abbott is head of sale for Anvil Traction, a manufacturer of slip resistant safety footwear technology specialising in slip resistant safety boots and shoes. His passion for workplace safety is deep-rooted and comes from his father being involved in the industry, too.

Some key points discussed in today’s podcast:

✅ Slip-resistance in footwear: why this is important, what are the key components

✅ Technology: the work that Anvil Traction is putting into what it calls Traction technology

✅ The holistic benefits of getting footwear right, given people wear these shoes for 1/3rd of their lives

✅ Sustainability: the three areas where we can improve

✅ James’ top tips on choosing the right footwear

This is a great episode, which underscores the point that safety often requires a broader and deeper understanding than many expect, but getting it right can have all sorts of benefits – not “just” safety.

Bonus prize – win a free pair of footwear!

James kindly offered a free pair of Anvil Traction footwear of the winner’s choice. All you need to do to be in with a chance of winning is follow Anvil Traction and Slip Safety Services on Linkedin

Lockton Slips, Trips and Falls Webinar, with Christian Harris plus QBE and Keoghs

Lockton Slips, Trips and Falls Webinar, with Christian Harris plus QBE and Keoghs

I was delighted to be asked by Lockton, one of the world's ten largest insurance brokers, to join a panel discussion about slips, trips and falls risks. And, kindly, they have allowed me to share the recording on the podcast

Here is what Lockton had to say about the event:

Slip, trip and fall risks remain a pervasive issue for businesses across a variety of sectors, and these still account for a large proportion of employers’ liability and public liability claims.

In the webinar, we learn how you can manage and offset these slip, trip and fall exposures, reduce claims, and take decisive steps towards decreasing your liability insurance premiums.

Bringing together risk management experts from Keoghs, QBE, Slip Safety Services, as well as in-house Lockton specialists, we advise on risk strategy, claims prevention, and how you can build a watertight approach to claims defensibility.

Plus, there was a chance for attendees to pose their questions to the experts in a live Q&A at the end of the session.

As always, I hope you enjoy this episode. If you do, please hit follow, and please share a review as this will help more people to become aware of the podcast

Christian Hunt on The Human Risk – behavioural science in safety

Christian Hunt on The Human Risk – behavioural science in safety

Christian Hunt is the founder of Human Risk Limited and a specialist in behavioural science relating to compliance and ethics. He joins Christian Harris on this week’s Safety And Risk Success Podcast to ruminate on these themes.

When things go wrong, there’s always a human component — causing the problem or making it worse. We think of people as assets, but they're also the single largest driver of risks. So how can we get the best out of our employees, while minimising the risks they pose?

Some key highlights of the interview:

✅ What is “the human risk” and why is it important?

✅ How did Christian’s interest in this area arise?

✅ Where do companies typically do well in this area?

✅ Which areas of human risk tend to have the biggest room for improvement?

✅ What is defensive decision making?

✅ What do face masks and condoms have in common?(!)

Greg Woods is a partner at law firm CMS. He specialises in defending personal injury claims on behalf of insurers and large self-insured organisations. Greg joins Christian Harris on this week’s Safety And Risk Success Podcast to discuss defending slip and trip insurance claims as well as the claims landscape for Covid, including working from home risks and the future of long Covid claims.

Key topics include:

  • How can companies be in the best position to defend slip-and-fall claims?
  • Where does Greg typically find people are strongest and where do they have most room for improvement?
  • How helpful, and under what circumstances, are: yellow signs, check sheets and slip tests?
  • What has happened to the “tsunami” of Covid claims that was expected / feared in mid-2020?
  • What are some of the implications of working from home, or, conversely, ordering everyone back to the office?
  • Will long Covid claims be a challenging – and expensive – issue as we move forward?

Greg is running a webinar on the Covid claims landscape in October. Look out for details of this coming soon.

What risk type are you? Geoff Trickey on using psychology to understand risk

What risk type are you? Geoff Trickey on using psychology to understand risk

What risk type are you? And why should you care?

Geoff Trickey, Founder & CEO at Psychological Consultancy Ltd, joins Christian Harris on this week’s episode of the Safety And Risk Success Podcast to discuss the Risk Type Compass.

This is an online diagnostic tool, developed by Geoff and his team, which calculates your risk type. It assesses the people side of risk and how this impacts our individual approaches to decision making.

Risk dispositions impact individuals' decision making, interpersonal relationships and team dynamics and organisations' risk culture.

The Risk Type Compass assesses risk appetite, supports leadership development, team development, board development, conflict resolution, selection and development processes and organisational change (and much more).

The discussion includes:

  • How and why Geoff came up with the idea of the Risk Type Compass
  • What is it? How does it work and what can the results be used for?
  • The two axes measured: emotion and cognition
  • The 8x risk types
  • Christian’s risk type and what this means for him

The Compass should be a powerful tool in your armoury to better understand your own risk appetite, but also that of your team, enabling you to make more informed decisions.

Keeping building capacity safe with Adil and Marwan of Omnia

Keeping building capacity safe with Adil and Marwan of Omnia

Keeping building capacity under control has never been more critical. But how do you know what a safe capacity for your building is in a Covid world?

What about if you manage a large real estate portfolio and need to consider how to rationalise that given new capacity constraints and flexible working habits?

Enter Adil Ayi and Marwan el Marabet of Omnia. As their tag line says: “Get back to work with science”.

With their scientific backgrounds, they’ve turned their minds to solving these problems and have created a valuable modelling tool, which allows insight-based decision making.

From a floor plan, with a few clarifying questions, they can show you – based on typical human behaviour in an office environment – how users move around, how the risk of close contact changes over time, and even how often you should think about cleaning your coffee machine!

But also discussed were the other, longer-term possibilities their modelling could aid: from slips-and-falls to cleaning frequencies and much more.

Finally, the last section of the chat was all around how to position safety and risk with a board to influence them to act – a topic close to Christian’s heart and one that Adil and Marwan are navigating, now, too.

Check out the episode and, if we earned it, please give us a 5* rating and hit subscribe.
