Yelp said in its Q2 earnings report that there were more than 2.5 million searches for Black-owned businesses between May 25th and July 10th. Google will contribute $175 million toward creating economic opportunities for Black businesses and workers. In this episode I share how small businesses survived the Great Recession in 2007 to 2009.  Everything came down to playing offense vs defense.  Enjoy The businesses we surveyed weathered the Great Recession by adhering to one of two overarching approaches: Promotion focus: They made primarily offensive moves that provided upside benefits. Prevention focus: They made primarily defensive moves to avoid losses and minimize downside risks. Among our sample, businesses leaned slightly toward offensive (e.g., expansion) over defensive (aggressive cost-cutting) strategies. Podcast Family!  In this episode, I discuss how the NCAA is embracing “change” and starting the process of allowing student-athletes to profit off of their name, image and likeness, the organization announced yesterday is a great opportunity for the podcasting space.  NCAA New ByLaw Key Take-Aways The organization’s top governing board voted unanimously to allow college athletes to be compensated, though the NCAA’s three divisions must still craft their own rules and detail the specifics. Student-athletes must be treated similarly to non-athlete students, must not be treated like employees of their respective universities, and there should be a “clear distinction between college and professional opportunities,” the NCAA said. In September, California became the first state to pass a law that would allow college athletes to get paid for endorsement deals and hire sports agents. Whatever challenges exist within the organization can be traced to the cohesion of the executive team and its capabilities in prediction, delegation, and repetition. Leaders don’t have to be years ahead, just minutes ahead of the market, the competition, and those they lead.
