Hello and welcome back to The Sports Coaching Podcast. This week host Sam Holmshaw is joined by Sam Hough (Senior sports development coach at Burnley Football Club). This week, the chaps discuss ‘coaching in Asia’, which seems a suitable topic as our host enters his second year coaching full-time in Asia, whilst guest Mr Hough has just called time on 7 years coaching over in China. In the episode (Part 1), both Sam’s share there experiences coaching in China, sharing the similarities and differences of coaching between the UK and China, and the challenges (both personal and within coaching practice) that they have faced coaching in Asia. And a big welcome back! Its been just under year but The Sports Coaching Podcast is back again. Thanks to all those that have got in touch in our time away - we are very happy to be here releasing fantastic conversations once again.


In this episode host Sam Holmshaw is joined by Fran Constancio (UEFA pro licence coach, YDP Lead (14-16s) & Assistant PDP (18s) at MK Dons Football club, formerly YDP Academy coach and Football & Education programme lead at Northampton Town Football club). Sam sat down with Fran back in July of 2022 to discuss the topic "Developing a long-term curriculum around the four phases of the football/ soccer game". In Segment 1 Fran talks us through the four phases of the football game (commonly known as attack, defence and the two transitional phases), why coaches choose to create/plan they're curriculum around these phases and discuss the potential benefits to players. In Segment 2 both Fran and Sam explain how coaches can begin to utilise working from the four phases in their coaching practice alongside creating principles for a game model. Finally some implications for coaching practice are discussed.

In this episode Sam was joined by Dan Steele, current MSc Sports Coaching student at Leeds Beckett, Emerging talent squad head coach at Tadcaster Albion & U10 Technical coach at York City FC Regional talent club. The chaps discuss the topic 'the importance of understanding self as a coach', a knowledge domain & treat of an expert coach (Abraham et al, n.d). Dan provides an introduction on 'understanding self' and shares his insight on the importance of this knowledge domain as a coach. Several areas within understanding self are then discussed, such as understanding who you are, how your work, how you think and how this impacts your coaching. Sam & Dan further discuss why we must be aware of our own conception of knowledge/learning and how this may reflect on the opinions we receive from others about our coaching practice.

Charly first provides an introduction to the sport, discussing its rules & the general game. Charly then highlights the main differences to coaching curling from team sports, highlighting how key rules provide constraints on how the coach conducts his/her practice. We then discuss how beneficial these rules actually maybe within youth development in curling, and how, if applied to team sports, these rules may be beneficial to youth development in team sports.
