Business and Life Lessons From OU Football Coach Brent Venables #SaturdayMorningHustle
I was inspired by a small part of this week's University Of Oklahoma Football Coach Brent Venables Press Conference that I have titled "The Definition of Confidence and Personal Growth" and this advice is good for football, business or life.   "Our guys feel confident because of the work they put in. That’s where you get your swag and your edge is by the work you put in, not because of people talking about you. Our guys have a genuine edge to them right now. They’re hungry. I love the engagement of this group of players. They’re engaged, as opposed they just going to practice. It’s easy to just go practice. Our guys have been engaged and very purposeful. One day at a time, showing up with goals and a focus about them. This gives you a chance to have daily improvement. That’s been a lot of fun to watch happen, for them to respect what it takes. Because what we're asking them to do is really, really hard." Let's talk about it. Don't Sell, Build Audience #SaturdayMorningHustle
Today's NEW podcast topic is a deep dive into a presentation I did 312 weeks ago: Don't Sell, Build Audience (my social media #ThrowbackThursday this week). Change your mindset, approach and strategy from aggressively selling to developing an audience through relationships, value offers, setting and then meeting expectations (plus more). Let's talk about it! 01:45 People don't like to be "sold" 03:50 Don't sell, offer value 04:24 Connect first, build relationships 05:18 What is a business relationship? 07:00 Listen more, then speak   09:00 Offer value for all   10:47 Establish your Brand voice   13:20 "Your brand story only works when it's true, simple and consistent" 23:00 Move to purchase, not a trick 23:45 Repeat for sustainable success  "Thank you IABC - OKC for letting me present about branding story and voice." - Me on Twitter in 2016. Professional Balance: Business Plans vs. Protocols & Strategy vs. Tactics #SaturdayMorningHustle Bonus Content
When it comes to guiding business decisions: big picture and day-to-day operations, where do you start and how do you balance Planning, Protocol, Strategy and Execution? These concepts are often misunderstood, confused for each other, combined or prioritized incorrectly. First, we need to understand each approach, then how to utilize each effectively. How do we find a balanced approach? Let’s talk about it. This long-form audio-only bonus episode is posted once a month as an opportunity to dive deep into the issues that challenge all entrepreneurs, business owners, career builders and decision-makers. "How to balance what seems to be contradictory viewpoints” in business and personal life. More than just work/life balance, we examine a variety of “this or that” scenarios. Thanks for listening to the “Professional Balance” bonus content series of the Saturday Morning Hustle podcast. I will be back next month with a new topic, plus a new podcast every Saturday with #Hustle and #Motivation advice from the office while the competition is still sleeping. Consistent Change Is Improvement #SaturdayMorningHustle
Two primary keys to success are Consistency and the Ability to Adapt or Change. Consistency is the ability to meet expectations persistently. Change is creating something new by adding or replacing necessary elements. So how can you be consistent and change at the same time? Let's talk about it. Age, Perspective, Experience, Empathy #SaturdayMorningHustle
When you were 7-8 years old, you probably thought your parents, grandparents and any person that was the age you are right now (in 2022) was "old". Today, you don't see people in their 20's or 30's or 40's or even 50's as old, do you? What changed? Your perspective, experiences and (hopefully) empathy for others. How does that apply to success? Industry Skills and Knowledge Crossover #SaturdayMorningHustle
Continuing the unofficial "Lifelong Learning" series from June, today I'm talking about how everything is connected in life. Skills, experience, and the lessons learned in different industries all contribute to the professional you are today. I've learned a lot from 35+ years of being an entrepreneur, business owner and professional with multiple career changes that has benefited me in the continual pursuit of success. I started my first business (as a teenager) in the music industry, eventually transitioning into freelance, non-profit and corporate marketing before deciding to start The Golding Group with my business partners. Professional Balance: Market Demand vs. Disruption #SaturdayMorningHustle Bonus Content
Let's discuss balancing What The Market Wants vs. Disruption in the product development process. Henry Ford is often attributed with the quote “If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses” in reference to building the first mass-produced automobile. If Ford had given the market what it wanted, we might not have the transportation and manufacturing technological advances that came from Ford ignoring the demands of the public and building cars for the masses. The original disruptor! But this is most often is NOT the case. Not every idea is viable and not every disruption is embraced. Giving the people what they want is a solid business plan, but innovation comes from breaking rules and forging new paths. How do we find a balanced approach? This long-form audio-only podcast is posted once a month as an opportunity to dive deep into the issues that challenge all entrepreneurs, business owners, career builders and decision-makers. Taking risks is necessary, but there is a smart way to do that. Launch smart and then work hard. Today I'm giving you permission, advice and support to make your dream a reality. Let's talk about it. Garage Bands and Warehouse Raves #SaturdayMorningHustle
A little nostalgia today as I explain lessons learned from seemingly unconnected occurrences from 1985 to 2000 including playing in garage Bands, 90's warehouse raves, music video fails, a chance meeting with Nine Inch Nails and creative business hustle before the internet, smartphones, social media, etc. It all worked out (because we didn't die) long before I know how to utilize these experiences as an entrepreneur. Professional Balance: Marketing Strategy vs. Product Fit #SaturdayMorningHustle Bonus Content
What you should change when a business is failing or a start-up can't get off the ground: Marketing Strategy or Product Fit? Why has your brand not connected with the right audience to facilitate sales? Is it a marketing problem (wrong audience, wrong offer, wrong channel, not clear or consistent, failing to separate from the competition via distinct differentiation)? -OR- Is there a fatal issue with the product or service (design, function. price, delivery, value offer, quality, unmet expectations)? What is to blame if you're failing, and how do you fix it? Is it marketing direction, product issues or both? Let's talk about deciding what needs to be addressed without losing all the work you have put in up to this point. Let's find a balanced approach. This long-form audio-only podcast is posted once a month as an opportunity to dive deep into the issues that challenge all entrepreneurs, business owners, career builders and decision-makers. Why #SaturdayMorningHustle Is So Important For Success
Welcome to the #SaturdayMorningHustle because winners hustle on Saturday. We come in early, we stay late and work on the weekend. Why is that important? Success is a mindset, an attitude and a lifestyle. No overnight sensations. Monday through Friday won't get you to "next level" status. The next "big thing" doesn't happen 9 to 5.   If you're trying to make a name for yourself, build a self-brand, launch a start-up, run your own business or be the best at what you do... you have to work! You need drive, determination and support. Work hard, but also smart. Not busy, but effective. Organized and Intentional. Focus on the two things you can control: Effort and Attitude. No Overnight Sensations #SaturdayMorningHustle
THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS OVERNIGHT SUCCESS! You have to work smart and work hard to earn it, even on the weekend. The keys to building sustainable success are Patience, Consistency, Creativity and Collaboration. Why is it so important to build success instead of becoming instantly successful, famous, rich, etc... in today's social influencer obsessed world of instant gratification? Because you need to build your successful business, brand, or career from the ground up to have the skills and experience to manage, adjust, sustain, and even rebuild it if necessary. In addition, you need to know the steps and create reliable relationships on the way up to keep yourself at (or near) the top.  Did you know this Saturday is the 6th Anniversary + 1 week (313 weeks) of my first social media post using the #SaturdayMorningHustle hashtag? Also, today is the 264th podcast episode (248 Saturday episodes + 16 bonus Balance Series episodes). So let me tell you the lessons I have learned from 313 weeks of developing the #SaturdayMorningHustle brand using the four keys mentioned earlier. It's Saturday, I'm in the office, this is the #SaturdayMorningHustle. Professional Balance: Self-Improvement vs. Market Competition #SaturdayMorningHustle Bonus Content
Let's discuss the true nature of competition. Which is more accurate: Your only competition is yourself vs. market factors (competition, audience, etc) should drive your decision-making process? Can you do both at the same time, and if so how? Where is the balance of internal processing vs. external factors? How much control do you really have? When is it more important to pay attention to what's going on around you? How can you balance these two very different philosophies to create your own realistic, impactful and motivational strategy for not just dealing with competition but embracing the challenges? Let's talk about it. This long-form audio-only podcast is posted once a month as an opportunity to dive deep into the issues that challenge all entrepreneurs, business owners, career builders and decision-makers. #SaturdayMorningHustle Business Advice Series Part 5 of 5 BPM
What is Business Process Management (BPM) and how can it benefit your business? BPM is an absolute dedication to the continual improvement of everything that makes up your business! To start, Golding Group (my business) Definition: Business Process Management (BPM) is a strategic approach to aligning company workflow, procedures, communication and human assets (talents) to create the most effective, efficient and manageable systems for sustainable business growth and longevity.  BPM is a strategic approach to creating effectiveness, efficiency and dependability in the execution of business activity. By focusing on ALL processes necessary for day-to-day operations, you (business leader) can better manage your business outcomes. BPM creates the opportunity for constant improvement via communication, measurement and adjustment of internal and external processes. These improvements translate to efficiency in developing, creating, and delivering products and/or services. It's Saturday, I'm in the office, this is the #SaturdayMorningHustle. #SaturdayMorningHustle Business Advice Series Part 4 of 5 Business Development
The often misunderstood concept and execution of Business Development is our topic this episode. Business Development (Biz Dev.) is NOT the simple idea of developing leads for sales. Instead, business development is improving your business by developing systems to maximize effectiveness and efficiency. Every aspect of a business (internal and external) can be improved, reviewed and improved again. Why is that important? There are 2 ways to create profitability. 1: Creating efficiency (lower internal cost). 2: Driving sales (more cash flow from external customers). Internal efficiency is much more controllable and won't interfere with customer experience or expectations. Dedication to business development reduces waste, improves productivity and creates efficiency. Success doesn't happen by accident. You must actively develop systems: rules, processes, guidelines, best practices and (most important) protocols for operations. That is business development. More on systems next week when we talk about Business Process Management (BPM) in part 5 of this series. It's Saturday, I'm in the office, this is the Saturday Morning Hustle. #SaturdayMorningHustle Business Advice Series Part 3 of 5 Customer Service
What do we do now that we have attention, attraction and a call to action (series episodes 1 and 2)? Begin a sales transaction focusing on Customer Service before, during and after the conversion process. Replace traditional sales with a dedication to providing customer service. No one wants to be "sold" (as a verb). However, you can sell more by not actively selling but instead utilizing the Golden Rule or Servant Leadership concepts of customer-first service for satisfaction and loyalty. Focus on creating appreciation, not a sales opportunity. If your marketing strategy is well-designed (position, value proposition and focused audience I.D.), sales do not need to be forced. Instead, the right people will want to do business with you for all the right reasons. Go beyond a single sale to repeatable, sustainable, predictable and bankable sales while building a solid reputation and creating brand ambassadors (the best sales tool ever). Focus on people, process (exceed expectations) and create a profitable business. Next Week: Part 4 - the often misunderstood concept and execution of Business Development. #SaturdayMorningHustle Business Advice Series Part 2 of 5 Mass Communication
Mass Communication is speaking into existence the vision of the marketing strategy via advertising, public relations, internal and external communication. Advertising grabs your attention, conveys information and delivers a call to action into your daily routine. Public relations, often referred to as earned media, is not a sale activity but does build trust, name recognition and partnerships in ways advertising can't. Internal and external non-sales communication is essential to a productive and effective organization. All of these communication forms lead to the same end result: functional connection and interactions between your business and your audience. It's Saturday, I'm in the office, this is the Saturday Morning Hustle. Listen while your competition is still sleeping. Professional Balance: Collaboration vs. Idealistic Visionary vs. Not Giving A F*@% #SaturdayMorningHustle Bonus Content
Welcome to episode 15 of "Professional Balance" a bonus content series of the #SaturdayMorningHustle podcast. On this episode, we will discuss building a collaborative community vs. leadership of an idealistic visionary vs. not giving a F*@% about other people's opinions. How can you balance working with others, closely or as part of a group, while retaining control over your process and individually? Can you lead and follow at the same time? Can these seemingly opposite ideas be balanced, and if so, how?   No one can do everything, know everything and manage all the aspects of a business at the same time. This is why collaboration, delegation and partnerships exist. We need other people with different skills, experiences and perspectives to add to our entrepreneurial pursuits to be successful. No one has ever risen to great heights by themselves. BUT, many great ideas have been spoiled by too many cooks in the kitchen. The biggest and most successful (because they are disruptive) come from charismatic visionaries who control everything. Every great team has a leadership core, but other employees and fans, customers, family, friends and random strangers on social media all want to add their "2 cents" by providing advice, ideas, etc. So how do we balance all the "noise" with good ideas? This long-form audio-only podcast is posted once a month as an opportunity to dive deep into the issues that challenge all entrepreneurs, business owners, career builders and decision-makers. "How to balance what seems to be contradictory viewpoints” in business and personal life. More than just work/life balance, we examine a variety of “this or that” scenarios. Thanks for listening to the “professional balance” bonus content series of the Saturday Morning Hustle podcast. I will be back next month with a new topic, and new podcast every Saturday with Hustle and Motivation advice from the office while the competition is still sleeping. Please subscribe, leave a review and make a comment on social media about what balance issues you would like to hear discussed on this series.

"Marketing" #SaturdayMorningHustle Business Advice Series Part 1 of 5
We start this 5 part series with Marketing, which is NOT advertising, social media or other tactics. Marketing is a process for internal understanding before external communication actions. Marketing is knowing before you speak and creating a sustainable system of continual improvement through two-way communication. How can you best utilize marketing for your business, start-up, side hustle or personal brand? Listen to find out.  My favorite part of the #SaturdayMorningHustle is answering your business questions. Audience feedback and response (plus coffee) are what fuel this program. To best answer your most asked questions, I'm dedicating a special 5 part series specifically designed to clarify the confusion surrounding specific business terms and practices. The elements that I will define, organize, and explain will be 1. Marketing (this episode) Next week is 2. Mass Communication (including advertising, public relations and general communication) then 3. Customer Service 4. Business Development 5.
