Dealing with Fatphobia as a Student

Dealing with Fatphobia as a Student

TW: fatphobia

In this episode, we tackle issues of fatphobia, self-acceptance and fat liberation, and how these play out in higher education. Especially in the month of January, there are a lot of discourses around body image and weight loss. To amplify these important notions, Ekin talks to Walphana and Talea, two founding members members of SCDAI who have done activism on the topic beyond SCDAI. As well as deliberating on what anti-fatness means in everyday life for fat people, the speakers also discuss which approaches are not helpful, how fatphobia intersects with other oppressive systems, what universities can do to better accommodate these students, and how fat people can support each other.

Consent, Healing from Sexual Assault, & What Can Organizations Do?

TW: Discussions on sexual assault and rape culture.

In April’s episode on SCDAI Talks we highlight the complex topic of sexual assault, and more specifically healing from it, building healthy boundaries, (re)exploring our sexuality and enjoyment, and connecting with yourself in the process. To guide us through that conversation, we have Elizabeth, a sexuality- and pleasure coach based in Amsterdam.

And of course to top it off, we discuss the responsibility of institutions, especially higher education ones, and how we can combat the deeply harmful rape culture.

Dealing with a Gender Identity Crisis as a Student

As today, the 31st of March, marks Transgender Day of Visibility, host Alex sits down with Hawun to talk about the topic of dealing with a gender identity crisis as an international student in the Netherlands. Hawun takes us along on their journey wtih exploring their gender identity and the road to finding true alignment with their gender in exerpiencing gender euphoria. Hawun also gives insights into what higher education should do to support their LGBTQIA+ students beyond performative actions (such as only acknowledging their existance on LGBT+ related holidays), and provides useful resources for trans and non-binary individuals in the Netherlands.

If you would like to read more about the resources Hawun speaks about, see our blog post on the same topic where they put down in writing every resource discussed in the episode, and more: https://www.scdaigroningen.nl/lgbtqia/resources-for-understanding-dealing-with-gender-identity-as-a-student-in-the-netherlands/

Students on Classism, Privilege & Accessibility in Higher Education

Students on Classism, Privilege & Accessibility in Higher Education

In this month's episode, Ekin and Alex talk about classism, privilege and accessibility in higher education. They discuss how the notion that higher education is a "great equalizer" is very flawed due to prevailing economical, social and cultural barriers to entering and remaining in these institutions. The discussion focuses on how poverty, immigration status, class, generational aspects, knowledge poverty, networking access, and the intersectional aspect of it all, are all interrelated notions in a web of challenges that many students face in regard to obtaining a higher education degree.
