Shivan started off with a major in Biomedical Sciences and has a real interesting reason for venturing into Optometry! He talks about his experience doing Biomed at the University of Auckland and whether the rumours about sabotage in the first year are true or not!
We also chat about all things Optometry, the pathways to it, what his experience is working as an Optometrist. He is currently working at Canterbury DHB but has experience in corporate and small, independent businesses.

Dr Victor Yim completed his PhD in Chemistry in the University of Auckland. He went through the Medicinal Chemistry undergraduate pathway which lead to peptide research. After his university life, he went on to become a researcher at Snowberry NZ where he works with novel ingredients and formulation for skin-care products.

S2E6 Shalini Ketheeswaran
Shalini completed her Bachelor of Pharmacy from the University of Auckland in 2015 and is a registered practising locum pharmacist. She was the Auckland Pharmacy Students Association President (2015), which allowed her to fully make the most of her university experience. In 2017 she built up the courage to change course and pursue a full-time career in the Pharmaceutical industry and hasn't looked back. This has provided her with the opportunity to live and work in different cities all over NZ. In order to develop herself further, she is currently focusing on skills in Management and Marketing supported by her Master’s study at UOA. Tune in to hear Shalini speak about the perks of being a pharmacy student, the career options that the pharmacy pathway can lead to, and how to have a bit of fun along the way.

Utsav is a fourth year PhD student at Duke University researching particle physics within the ATLAS experiment.
He previously attained a First Class Honours in Physics alongside a Bachelor’s Degree in Science with a major in Physics and a minor in Mathematics at the University of Auckland.
In his transition from New Zealand to the states - especially in the confusing process of applying to international graduate programs, Utsav has learnt a lot and looks to help anyone that is considering further studies in international universities.

Justin works at Radically which is a management consulting firm that is helping transform and evolve some of New Zealand’s key organisations. He focuses on delivering projects that find process improvement, unlock business potential for growth and enable change by being a coach, facilitator and strategic-thinker.

S2E2 Kyrah Thumbadoo
Kyrah shares her journey with us from how she got into science to how she ended up in her PhD! She started off doing a Bachelor of Health Science/Bachelor of Science conjoint with a focus in neuroscience and then did her honours in Pharmacology.
She had a successful honours year and managed to prove a causal variant in Motor Neuron Disease (super cool!)
She is now a PhD candidate at the Centre for Brain Research at the University of Auckland, still working on Motor Neuron Disease.
She talks about struggles during her honours year, dealing with imposter syndrome before her PhD and how her supervisor inspired her to continue with her studies. We’ve loved to hear Kyrah’s story and we think you’ll appreciate it too!

SGNZ Ep 14 Christian Lux
Episode 14 is up and running! Come have a listen as we talk to Christian about research, moving from Germany and the hurdles he encountered on his journey to a PhD in New Zealand.
Christian got his Bachelors and Masters degree in Human and Molecular Biology in Germany. In 2015, he visited The University of Auckland to study abroad for one semester as part of his Masters programme. After spending an amazing 6 month in NZ he decided to return in 2017 to do a PhD in Microbiology.
Christian submitted his doctoral thesis in December 2020 and is currently awaiting his examination. In the meantime, he is working as a research assistant and medical microbiologist at the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences at the University of Auckland.

Episode 12 is out now! Officially hitting the dozen mark for the SGNZ podcast. Tonight we have Ashley joining us for an insightful episode on her journey to becoming a dental hygienist from her original biomedical science roots.
Ashley has completed a BSc in biomed at UoA and BOH at Otago. While studying at Otago she also completed a summer research studentship in qualitative education research. She is a dual scoped clinician that is able to treat children under the age of eighteen for all of their dental needs and adults for dental hygiene care. She has worked in both the public and private sector and has a real passion for oral health.

Himesh has he's Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from Rhodes University in South Africa and a post graduate diploma in Business Administration from Unitec in NZ. After graduation, life took a weird twist and turn and suddenly he's so called good degree could not enable him to make ends meet due to a severe financial crisis. Through these twists and turns, Himesh ended up in the commercial side of pharmaceuticals as well as being into personal development as a motivational content creator and speaker.

Episode 8! Tonight we have Si Yin joining us to share her science story. From her inspirations that sparked her interest and drive to pursue a PhD overseas.
Si Yin recently started her PhD at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, working on a project that is a collaborative effort between neuroscience and psychology. Her interest in science started as a kid in Singapore, followed her through high school in Wellington, developed into a passion for the brain during university at Auckland and (luckily) persevered during a 2-year hiatus from studies as her plans to move across the Tasman were halted by the pandemic.

Nikhil completed his Bachelor of Science degree at The University of Auckland with a Biomedical Science major in 2018. His initial intentions involved getting into Medicine as a Graduate Student but after an unsuccessful attempt he felt like he like he was standing at a dead end road prompting him to take 2 years off studies to decide his next steps. Starting with gaining a job in the Medical Devices industry to a series of events in his life thus leading to his new journey of going back to university as a mid-20’s student. Listen in to an episode of a student who has gone through a rollercoaster of what we call career development and making life altering choices.

Jess finished a BTech in Biotechnology and MSc in Biomed with the belief of one day using biotech to solve one of the world's biggest problems. After stumbling into the concept of entrepreneurship, she is now a founding member of a biotech startup, BioFab, making an all-natural replacement for styrofoam. She is in charge of driving its R&D activities and is spinning its R&D into her PhD project.

If you are wondering what PhD life is like, this one is for you! Giselle completed her BSc, PGDip and MSc in Biological Science at the University of Auckland. She is currently in the third year of her PhD, investigating the effect of dietary zinc on the gut microbiome of a mouse model of autism spectrum disorder. She is aiming to state a postdoc next year.
