In this episode, Judith dedicated the interview to her Nanny Willows. They had a great relationship, and Judith based herself on how she was treated as a child. She also shares the fond memories, and fun had while visiting her grandmother. When her daughter went into labour, Judith slept in her car for three days, waiting for her granddaughter’s birth. As a result, she was there at the birth and was able to say silent prayers for her in the labour suite. Her granddaughter has acquired the love of animals like Judith, and they share lots of time feeding and caring for them.

Grandmother Time with Audrey

In this episode, Audrey shares that she was excited to be a grandmother, and it was just a natural progression from being a mother. She had special times with one of her grandmother’s in Jamaica, including combing her soft, long grey hair. Audrey believes that her mother and grandmother were the role models that influenced her as a mother and grandmother. Being a grandparent to Audrey is being a role model. She tries very hard not to transfer her fears onto her grandchildren. There’s very little that she would not do with her grandchildren, and she’s looking forward to taking them for a walk.

In this episode, Grace shares her special relationship with her Grandma Peddy and how it influenced her as a grandmother. Her grandmother encouraged her to wake every day at 3 am to pray, something Grace still does. Grace openly shared stories of events she did with her grandmother and her grandchildren. One of her granddaughters would regularly visit on a Friday when she resided in the UK. Sadly, because of where we are now globally, Grace has been unable to see them for a year, but they often have video calls. Grace talks about the indescribable love that she has for her grandchildren and that she would happily swim in a river with them. Her advice to other grandmothers is to love their grandchildren, spend time with them and makes memories.

Monica shares some of the Caribbean customs passed down to her, which she does and shares with her grandchildren. During the interview, Monica openly talks about how she protect her grandchildren, which becomes evident when Monica shares how she supported her granddaughter when bullied. After having several discussions and feeling unsupported by the school and the parents of the bullying child, Monica thought she had no choice but to address the situation herself. Her actions worked, and the bullying stopped. Monica and her grandchildren have a great relationship and have had several holidays together. Monica believes that being a grandmother is an opportunity to set boundaries and teach her grandchildren good morals.

With her parents being part of the Windrush Generation, and her grandmothers in Jamaica, she could not build relationships with them. However, she was inspired by observing how her mother interacted with tenderness with her grandchildren. Notably, Panya believes that Grandmothers do things differently from the parent/s and fill the gap while they make a living and provide a home. Panya sees being a grandmother as a privilege - having the opportunity to play a part in her grandchildren’s upbringing and be someone they can confide in and trust.
