Dirt Femme: The Album 101

Music can do a many splendid things, it can heal and it can motivate. Slim and I LOVE our beats, but especially when we come across new music for us to enjoy. Sit down with your girls as we discuss this interesting musical experience and our personal reactions. Examining the artist Tove Love and her first independently released album, we review the synth-pop vibes mixed with lyrics that deal with subjects like dramatic love to self-doubt.

Disclaimer: The views in this discussion are ours and we are reacting to the work at hand. The interpretation is biased because we are seeing it through our lens and our own personal experiences, but we do realize that everyone experiences music differently. This is us sharing our thoughts and views of experiencing this art, which we encourage others to do as well. Nobody should strive to be anything they are not, but we should all strive to open to challenging our own views or exploring why we hold them.

Mental Health 102

Mental Health 102

Mental Health is hard to work on and hard to maintain even after doing all the work to get on track. Join the girls as they discuss their own mental health journeys and how they have dealt with their own mental health needs. Slim discusses manifestation and how she sees herself being "in the present" which has helped open her up to positive experiences in her life. Thick discusses her recovery as a perfectionist and how she is dealing with trying to look inward for validation rather than from extrinsic sources.

Clarify: Thick is struggle bussing (we are not always at our best and that is okay), but she is basically saying that she feels that societal expectations put on young people to fit a certain mold or attain certain accomplishments from society has led to many people who are unsure of themselves if they do not attain those specific trappings of success. Parents feel pressure to make their children into these academic and child prodigies that if they do not fulfill those expectations then they end up slightly broken and unsure about what to do. Thick is not saying parents are bad or good, or how to parent but rather that what happens to the children who aren't doctors, lawyers, or nurses? Are these kids looked at the same or as having the same value as those other kids, if not then what is our society saying about our value as human beings. It's greatly wrapped up in these achievements and without them, what do we do with those that don't quite fit?

Abortion 101

Abortion 101

CW: Discussions about abortion and pregnancy, we understand that this is a sensitive topic and that it affects every femme person differently. There is no graphic language, but there is mention of sexual assault, rape, pregnancy, abortion, and death.

Sit down with the girls as they discuss the overturning of Roe V. Wade and the resulting implications for many marginalized groups so far. Also the girls cover how there is additionally new laws that target not only the people seeking the procedure, but also providers are being targeted by utilizing Mandatory Reporting Laws to come after their licenses. Just as Texas's Anti-Trans Bill utilized Reporting Laws to have professionals report on gender-affirming care treatment to the Department of Family Services, which resulted in many families suspected of allowing trans-children in the family to get gender-affirming care become separated by removing the child from the home pending an investigation of "abuse" in the home. These laws threaten to take away a providers license and ability to practice in their respected field, something that takes years to achieve and for some there are even more barriers than others. But we need providers with marginalized backgrounds and we shouldn't be threatening the ones doing this important work in our communities.

The Slim and Thick WC Podcast strongly opposes the laws and practices being implemented which intend to intimidate and harass not only individuals seeking proper care, but also the providers of that care as well to the point that providers are now having to suspend specific services out of fear for their practice or license. Please join the conversation and thank you for the support from our listeners so far, without you there is no podcast and we truly appreciate all you do to make our community what it is. We actively look to provide more resources and information to help us further support those engaged in this fight.

Diversity Education 113: Don't Say Gay Bill

Diversity Education 113: Don't Say Gay Bill

"Florida's House of Representatives passed HB 1557, also known as the "Don't Say Gay" bill, on Thursday. The Republican-backed bill, which would restrict teachers and school districts from openly discussing gender identity and topics surrounding sexuality in the classroom, passed 69-47 and now moves to the Florida Senate for further debate (Zoe 2022).

If passed, the legislation would go into effect for the 2022-2023 school year. As CBS Miami reports, HB 1557 prohibits instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity in kindergarten through third grade, and, in other grade levels, bars discussion that is not "age or developmentally appropriate." It would also allow parents to sue school districts that go against the law" (Zoe 2022).

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and Gov. Greg Abbott have outlawed gender-affirming health care for trans minors. In the drafted opinion letter in favor of the policy, drafted by Governor Greg Abbott and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton they stated that:

"As OAG Opinion No. KP-0401 makes clear, it is already against the law to subject Texas children to a wide variety of elective procedures for gender transitioning, including reassignment surgeries that can cause sterilization, mastectomies, removals of otherwise healthy body parts, and administration of puberty-blocking drugs or supraphysiologic doses of testosterone or estrogen. See TEX. FAM. CODE § 261.001(1)(A)–(D) (defining “abuse”). Texas law imposes reporting requirements upon all licensed professionals who have direct contact with children who may be subject to such abuse, including doctors, nurses, and teachers, and provides criminal penalties for failure to report such child abuse. See id. §§ 261.101(b), 261.109(a-1). There are similar reporting requirements and criminal penalties for members of the general public. See id. §§ 261.101(a), 261.109(a)." (Office of the Attorney General 2022)

Diversity Education 102: The Girls and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Book Bans

"The American Library Association said its Office for Intellectual Freedom reported 273 books were affected by censorship attempts in 2020, many with content that highlighted race, gender and sexuality. Since September alone, there have been at least 230 challenges, the organization said in an email."(Bellamy-Walker 2022). Happy Black History Month! To all our myelinated brothers and sisters, stay being awesome and to our nonmyelinated ones please pull up a seat so we can talk. Please join the conversation as your girls explore their perspectives on these book bans that are occurring in these school districts, these conversations are extremely important not just during Black History Month but just in general. You know your girls love a great book and representation matters so much, especially for kids in marginalized communities. From sexuality to gender to racial identity, our kids need us to ensure that the media they consume reflects them in some way. IT MATTERS to them and the future generations that will leave their own marks on the world.

New Year, Same Pandemic

New Year, Same Pandemic

On Tuesday, January 18 in the Clark County School District "the school district said its nurses had contacted 1,409 employees during the pause and cleared 1,068 to return to work. They also contacted 4,057 parents and cleared 2,324 students to return" (Wootton-Greener, 2022). The following day on Wednesday, January 19, "more than 300,000 Clark County School District students and 40,000 employees returned to class after a five-day “pause,” but it was not clear how many didn’t attend, either because of COVID-19 or for some other reason" (Wootton-Greener, 2022). Oy vey! If you are struggling mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally with this pandemic we completely understand. Thick sits down with Slim to discuss her Holiday Blues and her feelings about ANOTHER year in this panorama.

Those that have lost loved ones and have had a difficult time during this pandemic, our hearts go out to you and we hope to provide care in the knowledge that we are here for those in our community here in Vegas and all over the world. Thank you for listening, but more importantly take care of yourselves and each other this year. You deserve it. Also so all the parents, staff, frontline workers, and other caregivers who are still struggling through it, we again want you to know that you're not alone. We see you and we want to hear you too.

The Helpers are going to need our HELP...

The Helpers are going to need our HELP...

"About one in five healthcare workers has left their job since the pandemic started." (Yong 2021). When Slim and I saw this, we knew that we HAD to talk about it because we both are in the helping profession. Our helpers are NOT FINE and we really need to stop long enough to talk about it. Nurses, Social Workers, Doctors, Therapists, and the like are all burning out faster than can be replaced. Especially those just entering the field deciding to leave altogether after only a few months. Our healthcare system has always been in a precarious position, but just like how PPE was a finite resource so is the available amount of professionals that we have to do the life-saving work that goes down everyday in communities all across the United States. From physical illness to mental illness, we are battling pandemics on multiple fronts not to mention social issues that advocates work on diligently everyday. All these jobs are mentally, emotionally, and physically taxing which isn't surprising to us that so many professionals involved in these fields from the very top down to the grassroots are burning out. But what is alarming is that it's happening rapidly and to young, brand new professionals who drop out of the helping field all together.

Our healthcare system was not designed to operate at this capacity and as we head into another year of a pandemic with a rise in mental health issues as well as the social issues like housing getting harder to be addressed, we will need MORE professionals not less. So this time the helpers need help and we need to stop long enough come together as a community so we can have this discussion. Pull up a seat and lets start a discussion...

Nursing School: A Slim Experience

Nursing School: A Slim Experience

The Slim and Thick W.C. Podcast is a space for those in the community. Join two black femmes as they unapologetically take up space to provide knowledge, resources, and dialogue on current important topics. From politics to Tik Tok, two sisters provide an inclusive space for community organizers and marginalized populations to gather for a moment in a space made for them. It's a labor of love from us to the community that we love to serve.

Nursing can be described as both an art and a science; a heart and a mind. At its heart, lies a fundamental respect for human dignity and an intuition for a patient's needs. This is supported by the mind, in the form of rigorous core learning. Due to the vast range of specialisms and complex skills in the nursing profession, each nurse will have specific strengths, passions, and expertise. Slim has been pursuing her Nursing Degree for awhile now and we finally had time to sit down and talk to her about her experience in school. This interview has been a long time in the works and we are so excited to share her perspective going through Nursing School. I wanted these types of sit downs since I started our Career Series where our Career Guides for students are housed. So check out the interview and the website for all the content!

WE appreciate and extend heartfelt gratitude for all the workers, professionals, and students in our community who have been working so hard through this time of the Pandemic. WE also hope to provide support and let you know that we see you as well as all the struggles that have gone on this past year. Be it student debt and day-to-day grind of just trying to motivate yourself to get through another anxiety filled class to the parents/caregivers who shoulder on at work while juggling their own financial and mental health needs. WE see you and we appreciate you, here's to hoping that more support is garnered for all who desperately need it. Until then we will try to do what we can on our end. Thank you again.

Toonami 101

Toonami 101

Content curation is the process of gathering information relevant to a particular topic or area of interest, usually with the intention of adding value through the process of selecting, organizing, and looking after the items in a collection or exhibition (“Toonami Wiki | Fandom,” 2009). Toonami was the curator of anime culture and content to an American audience, which was done in a tasteful and meaningful manner (kaptainkristian, 2017). Toonami is an animated programming block that formerly aired on Cartoon Network and currently airs on Adult Swim, the programming block is geared toward action animation, mostly consisting of American cartoons and Japanese anime. Toonami is notable mostly because of its Japanese anime content. The name is a combination of the words cartoon and tsunami, suggesting that the block is a "tidal wave" of animated shows (“Toonami Wiki | Fandom,” 2009). Sit down with us as we discuss the amazing history and lasting legacy that Toonami has had not only on the generation before, but currently as it was revived by a dedicated fanbase who are still thriving today having made a home for Japenese Anime Culture in the United States for young and older millennials alike.

Back to School 102

You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I’ll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
’Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.
Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still, I’ll rise.

- Maya Angelou (1928-2014), Still, I Rise

Quick Bite 3 - Woman's Herstory Month

Activation Warning: Discussion includes Gender Violence, Assault, Racial Violence, Kidnapping

The Article "What Sarah Everard’s Murder Illuminates—And Might Obscure" written by the author Kate Manne on The Atlantic's Website puts a spotlight on the tragic death of Britain's Sarah Everard, while also bringing up the said reality of violence against women and how so many actually go unseen. From the shootings in Atlanta to the Violence Against Women Act just getting passed in Congress, Women's History Month is shaping up to be somewhat disappointing and eye-opening to the fact that we have a long way to go when comes to protecting ALL women. Sit down with us as we have a talk about focusing on our most vulnerable populations and doing the work to protecting them. I hope we can help communities heal and do what we can to reach out to those that truly need it.

Student Loans 101

Student Loans 101

Activation Warning: There is a discussion about poverty and financial insecurity due to specifically student loan debt.

Clip Credit: Khadija Mbowe's The woes of student loan debt

The Slim and Thick Podcast is a space for those in the community. Join two black femmes as they unapologetically take up space to provide knowledge, resources, and dialogue on current important topics.

In a recent survey conducted by The Harris Poll it was found that "Americans rank borrowers as having the primary responsibility for fixing the student loan debt crisis, they also support the government passing a  range of potential reforms. Frequently recommended solutions, such as forgiveness of a flat amount of student debt (64%) and forgiveness of all student loan debt (55%), are supported by more than half the country. Additionally, nearly two-thirds of  Americans (63%) support forgiveness of all student loan debt for those  working in certain industries like health care, science & technology, or public service."

These findings are critical in our discussion about student loan debt because recently President Joe Biden has come out saying that he is not totally on board with major student loan forgiveness. Now is the time to have a serious discussion about what student loan debt is doing to Americans, what are the repercussions of not addressing it, and what are the concerns that people with this type of debt are facing. This will be an ongoing series. While Slim and I try to bring levity and humor to this serious situation, we recognize the severity of it and we firmly stand with ALL STUDENTS (from all walks of life that are truly struggling under the weight of this financial burden). We hear you and this is a space for you to be heard.

In a Las Vegas Review-Journal Article by Michael Scott Davidson (2020) titled "Nevadans want ‘normal life’ to return as COVID fatigue sets in" discusses the issues that residents are feeling as the COVID Pandemic has dragged on. "In Nevada and more than half of other U.S. states, COVID-19’s spread is regaining momentum. But after months of lockdowns, social isolation, and mask-wearing, Nevada officials are concerned about “COVID fatigue,” describing frustrated and restless residents who now choose to ignore recommended pandemic precautions. The largest growth in new cases in Nevada and the U.S. has been among college-age adults, UNLV epidemiologist Brian Labus said."

Sit down with us as we explore the feelings of frustration and anxiety that many are feeling during this health crisis, and let's try and explore what we can do to adjust as a community. Check out the website for more resources and information: slimthickpodcast.com

In a research paper titled "Racism and sexism in the gaming world: Reinforcing or changing stereotypes in computer games?" by B. Mitchell Peck, Paul R. Ketchum, and David G. Embrick, the question of how minorities and women were portrayed in gaming culture was asked. The answer "We found minorities were generally limited to stereotypical roles or excluded. Women were typically depicted in sexualized roles. Our study suggests no significant gains have been made in the past two decades in terms of how women and minorities are portrayed in gaming advertisements." This research paper was written on May 6, 2011, and have things improved since then?

Slim examines not only the gaming industry but the fans that partake in it. In this episode, we sit down to discuss the entertainment industry and how that plays a role in us consuming content. How this content can affect our perceptions of certain groups and how others can play a significant role in affecting the mental health of marginalized groups in these spaces.
