Sober Gratitudes

By Sarah Elizabeth
Are you wanting sobriety or constantly relapsing? Whatever the reason, and where ever you are at, you have landed in the right place. I created this podcast out of the desire to share about my success story and how I stay sober to give you hope. This podcast also has guests who are experiencing long term sobriety and are happy. My name is Sarah and after 25 years of alcoholic drinking, I am so grateful to have been relieved of the obsession to drink and freed from the bondage of self. Sobriety doesn't have to be a struggle or hard! Long-term sobriety doesn't have to be a battle or difficult

Bonus Episode: Get Your Dose of Hope in Sobriety Today, 1/1/22
Happy New Year and I am so glad you are here! My name is Sarah, and I am sober woman; a wife; a mother....my alcohol misuse took me to very dark places over the course of my life. It wasn't always that way. But towards the end of my love affair with alcohol, I lost all control. I needed help. I was ashamed and embarrassed that I could not control drinking on my own. I did not know how to live with or without alcohol, so I finally sought help from another recovered alcoholic. That one change, this decision to do it differently is why I'm sober today.  Every day I need to connect with another person in recovery. I WANT to help others who are trying to get sober or stay sober or want to be happier in sobriety.  I want to offer hope.  So, this is my gift to you- A Daily Dose of Hope (in sobriety), so you don't feel so alone, and we can stay sober together. It is so much easier when we stay sober together.  Will you join me and make me a part of your recovery program? Bonus Episode: Controlling an Active Alcoholic
No human power got me sober. I had to get to a place of complete desperation. The progression of my disease was a slow one. I stopped and started constantly. I tried so many different ways to control my drinking on my own. I tried to read things or watch documentaries that would co-sign my wish that I did not have a problem. I would seek out others who drank more than me so that I could find relief that I wasn't an alcoholic. None of that changed my relationship with alcohol and my ability to control it. No human power could save me. At the end of my drinking career I had to believe that I had a problem...but how could I live or live with out drinking alcohol?

S2:E61; Honoring sadness in sobriety.
In today's episode, I share about how I learned that feeling sadness is ok and that holding onto those feelings negatively impacts people around me. Essentially, I become irritable, distant, and bitchy with others.  I am grateful I can honor my feelings and calmly share with my loved ones how I am feeling with out hurting them in the process.  What feelings are you holding onto today?  You don’t have to do this alone. Monday's With Mackenzie: In Sobriety We "Get To" Do Things
Before we got sober and had a profound personality change, our attitudes and behaviors were much different. Our attitudes were "Ugh, we HAVE to do __________". Now, in recovery, our attitudes are mostly "Yes! We GET TO do things." Listen to our conversation to understand what this really means.  We are so glad you are here. There is a solution. Sobriety does not have to be difficult. Getting sober doesn't have to be difficult.  Reach out. We are here to help.  Sarah : sobergratitudes@gmail.com Mackenzie: kiesel.mackenzie@gmail.com Disclaimer: Sober Gratitudes is a podcast dedicated to sharing the hope in recovery from addiction. S2;E58: Why I Love Being a Sober Friend! (Happy Friendship Day!)
My youngest son has autism. He is delayed in many areas of development but one thing we know for sure is that he embodies the ability to be genuinely friendly. He demonstrates how to be selfless while interacting with others. He gives unconditionally- with out any expectations of getting anything back (except that he is asked when his birthday is!) This morning he reminded me it is friendship day and he couldn’t be more excited to call people to wish them a Happy Friendship Day . This is one of the many reasons why I adore my son. So, of course, because of this, I decided to change the topic I was originally planning to discuss today and instead discuss Friendships in sobriety! How could I not ? This episode is dedicated to my beautiful boy, Cameron . DISCLAIMER: Sober Gratitudes Podcast does not represent or promote any forms of recovery . When my guests and I share about what keeps us sober , we are referring to our own unique experiences with the understanding and respect that many forms of recovery exist.

Hi! We are so glad you are back for another episode on Mondays' With Mackenzie! Today, we talk about literally what is happening in our lives right now and how it does not mean we are failing in sobriety or failing as humans. S2;E52: Daniele: Newly sober; newly diagnosed Autistic Son
Daniele, my dear friend from IG account @lifeonthefoxstrum, got sober when a friend voiced concerns about her drinking. Since that day, she has not looked back and I have had the pleasure of becoming close friends with her myself! Daniele and I met because she listened to an episode I was in on podcast called Adventures In Autism with Megan Carranza. I spoke mostly about being an autism mom but I briefly mentioned at the end of the episode how grateful I was to have gotten sober as it made me a more present mother. Daniele identified and then joined a zoom group I started that meets every Tuesday called Sober Autism Parent Community and you can find out more about this unique group on Instagram. On this episode Daniele shares about how getting sober has changed her life in many positive ways and how she is so grateful she can be a more present mom to her 3 year old son Xander, who is on the Autism Spectrum.

S2:E51 Sunshine is the Anecdote to The Darkness
When I bring things out into the light, it takes away it's power over me.  An episode about mental health. Honesty with those who I love and love me about the times when Depression breaks through my medications. Offering you, my listeners, awareness of my own mental condition and allowing myself to ride through it with out shame or judgement; to take it easy and be gentle with myself when it shows up... all of this helps for an easier "go" the next time Depression shows up.  Being sober makes dealing with my mental health WAY easier! Another reason for being grateful for my sobriety.

We share how life changes so dramatically that we are, even after many years, are left in disbelief we go this opportunity to live a better life. I really love talking with people who are sober because there is a great sense of peace about them. Dean embodies that. S2:E38 Why I Recover Out Loud
Nearly 9 years ago, when I arrived at a place in my life when I realized I could never have just 1 drink, I felt ashamed. I told only a few people because I felt like a failure. I didn't understand back then, that my drinking problem was not a moral failing. I was not a bad person, I was a sick person and I chose to get better. I chose to do something radical according to societal standards and better my life by abstaining from alcohol forever, one day at a time. It baffled me that I could never have just one drink. I hated the shame I felt It had baffled me that I wanted to drink a lot. It baffled me that when I wasn't actually drinking, I was thinking about when I would be able to drink. In my 12 step program, I learned why I couldn't have just 1 drink. I learned I wasn't a failure or a weirdo. I learned that I had alcoholism. People helped me learn how to live a better life, freed from the chains of addiction. But for years, I was still incredibly embarrassed and ashamed and did not want people to know. But, what if, 9 years ago, I decided to lose weight because I was harming myself with too many calories through sugar of fat? .... Would I have had the same feelings of shame like I did when I quit drinking alcohol? Would I feel like I needed to hide it as a secret? Would I worry that I would make people feel uncomfortable when I said "no, no seconds for me." Would people say, just eat less for 6 months and then you can go back to eating sweets/high fatty foods! It'll be fine! I write this NOT to blame any person or group of people. Society has successfully made it perfectly normal to drink a legal drug to excess to cope with the normal realities of life. That's what made it so easy for me to hide my alcohol addiction. My ability to party hard was celebrated. Society cheers us when we wear shirts that say "drink wine because my baby whines." Do we see shirts that say "smoke that ciggy because your kids are exhausting you, so take a well deserved inhale"? There is no shame in wanting to quit drinking . I believe in you 🥰. #sober #soberlife #sobergratitudes #sobergratitudespodcast #wedorecover

Episode 8: Gabby. “Finding Peace In Sobriety as an Autism Mom”
My Guest for this episode is, Gabby, from www.recoveringartfully.com. She is an Autism Mom and she is Sober.  She shares about difficult personal experiences in active addiction including a suicide attempt, and her courageous work to change her program of recovery, with the help of another alcoholic.  She shares her gratitudes in sobriety including an improved relationship with her husband, and becoming a more present mother to her son with Autism. I love Gabby's story because it is an example of how when we, as parents, make positive progress through sobriety, our children make progress, too. For Gabby, getting sober gave her a better and more manageable life. It also meant finding peace in recovery as an Autism Mom. I can really identify with Gabby's story. I have 2 children with Autism. For me, getting sober meant no more blaming myself for my childrens' challenges. In my experience, drinking alcohol was a coping mechanism for issues in my life. One of those issues was coping with my own insecurities and fears with being an Autism Mom.  In recovery, I developed the tools that helped me parent with more confidence and selflessness, and I see the positive results in my children today! If you are parent who is struggling, it is never too late to ask for help. If you have a child with Autism and need help, call The American Autism Association at 877 654 GIVE For help with addiction or mental health issues, call 800 662 HELP.
