Southern Haint Stories

Southern Haint Stories

By Daliah Lou

The ghost stories & legends of the American South are as much a part of our culture as sweet tea & porch swings. Our collective haunted history has been past down from generation to generation in the form of campfires stories & cautionary tales since time immemorial. And now I'm sharing those stories with y'all every other Saturday. Call it paranormal, call it creepy- I just call it good ole fun!

Axman of New Orleans -- Louisiana

Axman of New Orleans -- Louisiana

—CONTENT WARNING: This story contains descriptions of violence, murderous scenes, and the unsolved murders of several individuals. This story also discusses xenophobia and racism—

You know what they say, y'all, sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction. And while the story of the Axman of New Orleans has faded into legend over the years, the hate and bigotry so engrained within the tale is just as real now as it was then.

Tailypo - Georgia

Tailypo - Georgia

Y'all may have to forgive me this week. I'm still recoverin' from "the 'rona", so if this week's episode isn't the greatest, we'll just chalk it up to some sorta wild fever dream! I still wanted to make sure y'all had a creepy creature haint story in time for Halloween, though, and the legend of the Tailypo is one of my favourites. But be forewarned- the original tale ain't for the squeamish.

Skinned Tom - East Tennessee

Skinned Tom - East Tennessee

"Have you seen the ghost of Tom Long red bones with the skin all gone Ohh, ohh, ohh, poor old Tom Wouldn't it be chilly With no skin on"

Thought I'd start things off with a ghostie story I grew up on in the mountains of East Tennessee. The legend of Old Skinned Tom has been past down for decades as a warnin' to all those with... untoward intentions.
