"BIRDBATH"

"BIRDBATH"

The Sermon from Rev. David H. Benke, Senior Pastor of St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brooklyn, NY. On June 22, 2020

This message of comfort from Pastor Benke lets the hearer know that God who cares for each bird in the sky cares all the more for us.  God knows all, which is a hard concept to take in.  But above all, God cares.

In the same way a birdbath brings God's creatures to wash and drink, we were brought by grace to be baptized, washed in the water that brings eternal life.  And Jesus, who says, come to me, all who thirst and I will give you to drink, has led us to the spring that never runs dry in His love.

For those suffering under the COVID-19 virus and all that it prevents in terms of human contact, the message gives comfort - God still and always cares!

The Reach of God’s Love in a Time of Trial

The Reach of God’s Love in a Time of Trial

The Message from Pastor Dave Benke on June 17, 2020 is taken from Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians, chapter one.  The center of the universe is the cross of Christ.  The cross presents a foolish God who gives up life itself for humanity, for us.  It is not a sign of success - it's quite the opposite - it's a sign of death and destruction.

Pastor Benke lets us know in this message that through the storm and trial of contemporary existence, including racial injustice, including the death of loved ones from a tiny virus, the cross is our hope.  Jesus is our hope.

And the center of the universe is One Solitary Life.

Greet One another with a Holy Kiss

Greet One another with a Holy Kiss

The Message from Pastor Dave Benke in our Wednesday Evening Prayer and Song on June 10, 2020 has to do with physical contact in a contact-free time, namely The Holy Kiss.  St. Paul writes to tell his folks to stay in touch with one another in love by using the standard greeting - a Holy Kiss.  Pastor Benke encourages us to find love in the virtual world in this unique time in our history by taking every other available method to "stay in touch" without touching.

The Body of Christ is a durable organism - it goes beyond our genetic code into the eternal code of joy that God plants in human hearts brought together in Jesus' Name.  Enjoy this episode in how to remain steady in the Lord while staying safe at home!

It’s Not That Long a Toss

It’s Not That Long a Toss

A Message from Pastor Dave on the Seventh Sunday After Easter 2020, based on the lesson from First Peter - throw all your cares upon God, for He cares for you.

Pastor Benke lines up the various types of tossing we do, throwing a ball around, watching athletes toss baseballs and footballs, and how far they can throw that ball.  God encourages us to toss all our anxieties, our worries and cares, the things we cannot control, to Him - and He will take care of them, and of us.  It's not that long a toss between us and God, because Jesus stands between and fields those tosses and gets them home to the Lord.  This is a message for our times and our place in life right now.

"Justice, Mercy and Humility in a Time of Chaos"

"Justice, Mercy and Humility in a Time of Chaos"

The Message from Pastor Dave Benke from June 3, 2020 focusing on the Micah 5, which tells us to do justice, love mercy and walk humbly before our God.  This message is most highly appropriate in a time of racial disturbance and distress.  The Bible encourages the seeking of justice along with mercy toward all; but at the bottom of it, we walk humbly before the Lord.

This message is short but to the point of not abandoning the cause of justice in difficult times.

You Can’t Socially Distance the Holy Spirit

You Can’t Socially Distance the Holy Spirit

The Sermon from our Senior Pastor Rev. Dr. David H. Benke on the Day of Pentecost.  Pastor Benke asks the question - what is the most famous building in the history of the world?  The answer provides you with an insight into the birthday of the Christian Church and how social distancing was the LAST thing on anybody's mind on that day, when the Holy Spirit entered and change began in human hearts that continues to this very day.

In a time when forced distance is the rule of the land, the Holy Spirit connects us, holds us together and gives each and every one hope that cannot fade.
