22: Leadership doesn't come easy: 30 years of banking with Bret Packard, CEO, The Packard Network
Bret Packard is a story of success achieved through sheer hard work, persistence, exponential learning and putting up antennas. Metaphorically speaking of course.
When Bret was a child, he got his first radio.
"I just thought it was the coolest thing to be able to set up a big antenna on the telephone poles and with fishing line and, and set it up and listen to the BBC in
London.
My dad said, "Brett, you know, it's amazing- in our backyard, there are thousands of radio signals, both local and from around the world. All
you got to do is put up in the antenna. And you can listen to them.
This formed the basis for my leadership. And how I live my life, which is basically never chase anything, because you're never going to be happy if you're chasing
someone or something. Set up that antenna and attract it and enjoy it."
After spending 30 years in banking, he has a story to tell - or ten! What's extraordinary is that he kept a daily journal for 29 of those 30 years. And he tells us the lessons he's learned from living and working in 30 countries across the world.
I’m your host, Nausheen I. Chen. I’m a leadership communications coach. I come from the world of PR, marketing and training at Fortune 50 companies. 13: 2022 - A Year of Fantastic Conversations
2022 was a year of new beginnings for me.
I re-invented myself as a public speaking coach.
I also launched this podcast - Speak as a Leader - which is now on it’s 13th episode - so it’s lucky number 13, and we’re going into 2023 - so it’s a great time to look back at some of the INCREDIBLE - and I mean TRULY incredible people that I’ve had the privilege of talking to!
You’ve heard senior directors at companies like Google, Facebook, IBM, Walmart and Unilever.
You’ve heard from C-level execs and founders at fast growing startups, best-selling authors. I even surprised my hippie self by talking a director at the Australian Army. And I even got to talk to someone who has served at the Pentagon!
So I’d love to take you on a little journey through how these amazing leaders have learned the art and science of speaking in public and how they’ve become better leaders and influencers through speaking.
Hope you have a fantastic 2023!

You step up.

2: Leadership Lessons from the Pentagon with Jared Johnson, ex-US Air Force, CEO at Arlandria Consulting
What's leadership in the US military really like?
(To be honest, I never thought I'd be asking this question. You'll find out why in the podcast!)
Jared Johnson is someone who's certainly be able to talk a lot about this (and candidly)!
Jared has a long and rewarding history in the US Air Force and the Pentagon. He is now the CEO at Arlandria Consulting, where he has the ambitious goal of "Solving the Globe's Most Complex Challenges”.
He shares what speaking as a leader - in and beyond the US military - means to him.
In our second episode of Speak as a Leader, we dive into what leadership is and isn't, what awesome and broken communication look like, and whether the emperor was really wearing any clothes at all.

1: I'm Not Faking It with Chris Piper, CMO Scribe Media
I love public speaking. But most people don't. What better way to start off a podcast on public speaking than to invite a leader who hates it?
Chris Piper is no ordinary CMO. He's built a marketing agency, launched his own patented product at CES, and helped grow several 8 and 9-figure businesses. At Scribe Media, Chris has helped scale the company from low 7-figures to mid-8, from 19 people to 120+, and 1 person in marketing (just him) to 15.
And despite being a public figure and a C-level exec, Chris has a love-hate relationship with public speaking. On the one hand, he believes that you can have "10 years of therapy in one talk (on stage)", but on the other he would rather "stand up naked in front of everyone than have to do (his most memorable) speech again". We dive into this and much more in this premiere episode of Speak as a Leader.
