Ali Weller became a Climate Reality Leader at the 2018 Mexico City training. She is a Training Content Manager at Apple, where she also volunteers as a Core Leadership Member of the AppleEarth group, with whom she has coordinated several company-wide tree planting events in partnership with environmental nonprofits like the Sierra Club, Our City Forest, the Santa Cruz Land Trust, and the Turtle Island Restoration Network. Ali was certified by Afforestt in the Miyawaki method of regenerative forest restoration, which can be used to regenerate a 100-year native forest in 10-30 years, from the soil-up. She is also a certified permaculture designer, with her PDC from Pun Pun, a regenerative farming school north of Chiang Mai, Thailand. Ali co-founded an environmental education nonprofit in 2008, called Intelligent Play, which has led hundreds of workshops in 15 different countries. Ali gave a TEDx Talk in 2014 about her environmental and community work in an Inuit community in the Canadian High Arctic Circle, where she was the Manager of Communications for the Nunavut Impact Review Board. Ali has spent several years advising on the Boards of Directors for the North American Association for Environmental Education, the Canadian Network for Environmental Education and Communication, and currently serves as Ambassador for Mission Be. She created an arctic group of the Canadian Water Resources Association, and participated in the creation of the Pan-Arctic Environmental Education Association. During this time, her arctic writing was nominated for a national literary award. Ali has a background in Education, Communications, Biology, Aboriginal Law, World Literature, and a Masters degree in Environmental Studies. She lives on a farm in Soquel with 6 other women who collaboratively tend the land, grow organic food, and create soil by composting. Ali is currently looking for co-founders for a new organization: the BlueGreen Fund, which aims to scale Miyawaki-style forest restoration in North America to plant and protect millions of trees, as part of the World Economic Forum’s 1-Trillion Trees Platform.

She organized her first Black Lives Matter protest on June 20th, 2020 in San Lorenzo Valley which was extremely successful.

She is currently a part of the San Lorenzo valley/ Scotts valley Coalition against racism organization.

After experiencing racism herself in San Lorenzo Valley School system she had to switch schools which have made a profound impact on her life.

About Danielle:

I am a resident of the San Lorenzo Valley/Scotts Valley area since 1983. I am biracial Mexican and Japanese, light-skinned presenting, and was often one of the few POC in my classrooms growing up. I note light-skinned because a huge part of my journey is to fully embrace my cultures and overcome the feeling of not belonging. My desire to work for social justice and humanity has been a lifelong dream and led me to teach 17 years ago.  I spent 10 years in PVUSD teaching migrant students and more recently moved to the schools that I attended growing up. For anyone who doesn't know, the Valley is a predominantly White community. Racism and White Privilege dominate the communities and do not provide safe spaces for POC or even LGBTQ community members. I currently am the bilingual liaison for the district and work to advocate for all students but especially my POC students and families.  In light of recent events this past Spring, it has become more and more apparent that there is much work to do in our community to abolish racism and,  take a deeper look at the privileges that White community members are accustomed to.  As a Coalition, we mentor High School students and young people who are politically active and organizing open mics and marches to continue to raise awareness only to be met with hate speech and even threats to their person and property.  As an educator, I feel it is my duty to ensure better access to the Social Justice curriculum AND Racial Bias Training for all staff members in our schools. For this reason, I have joined and help to admin the SLV/SV Coalition Against Racism where we have teaching resources, discourse, and action events to execute change.  Our next course of action is to work with the school districts to create a task force of POC, Parents, and Community Stakeholders who wish to be a part of the conversation about overhauling the curriculum and creating meaningful changes in our community.

Born and raised in Santa Cruz, CA Drew Glover is a former City Councilmember and activist. At 34 years old, Drew has spent the last 10 years of his life implementing projects and programs geared towards nonviolence education, environmental sustainability, and addressing social inequity around issues of race and systemic oppression. He is certified as a trainer in Kingian Nonviolence Conflict Reconciliation, learning first hand from historic civil rights leader Dr. Bernard Lafayette. Drew’s life path has taught him how to cultivate a climate of connection, responsiveness, and care in communities traditionally marginalized or neglected by those in power in the United States. Named one of Santa Cruz County’s “Community Game Changers” by The Community Action Board of Santa Cruz County, Drew is also the recipient of the 2014-2015 Rosemary Grainger Peace Activism Award for his work in community organizing. Drew is the Founder and Executive Director of Project Pollinate, a past Commissioner on the Commission for the Prevention of Violence Against Women, and is the former President of the United Nations Association of the United States of America Santa Cruz Chapter. He is a member of SCCCCOR (The Santa Cruz County Community Coalition to Overcome Racism), the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), The Coalition to Save the Beach Flats Garden, SCRAM (Santa Cruz Resistance Against Militarization) and The People’s Democratic Club. Drew served as a City Councilmember in the City of Santa Cruz as one of the strongest voices advocating for renters protections, anti-racism, and the protection of unhoused individuals from 2018 until 2020, when he was targeted by a real estate backed campaign that ultimately removed him from office.
