Early Literacy Instruction that Promotes Future Academic Success with Dr. Susan B. Neuman
Our guest today is Dr. Susan B. Neuman, researcher in early literacy development. Dr. Neuman’s research has focused on early childhood policy, curriculum, and early reading instruction for children who live in poverty.
She previously served as the U.S. Assistant Secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education, where she established the Early Reading First program, developed the Early Childhood Educator Professional Development Program, and was responsible for all activities in Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Act. She has written more than 100 articles, and authored and edited eleven books, including the three-volume Handbook of Early Literacy Research.
Today, Dr. Neuman has taken time to talk with us about how we can best support the development of early literacy skills that predict future academic success.

According to the National Association of Gifted Children…The term “twice-exceptional,” or “2e,” is often used to describe gifted children who, have both the characteristics of giftedness with the potential for high achievement and exceptional performance, and the characteristics of students with disabilities exhibiting struggles and/or significant delays in various areas of academic and/or social performance that is often not commensurate with their innate abilities.
This podcast highlights critical issues with assessment and barriers for students who are "2e", as well as deposits possible solutions that schools and districts can leverage to help meet their diverse needs.
