From Life of the Party to Truly Enjoying Life: Jasmine Rogers' Awakening #62
Ray sits down with Jasmine Rogers, whose journey to becoming two years sober from alcohol, has been anything but straightforward. The duo explores what it truly means to live authentically — the challenges, the triumphs, and the unexpected moments of growth. This is Jasmine’s second time in sobriety. Her first lasted a year, and then when she thought she was “cured,” she relapsed even worse. The staying factor is she always remembered the clarity sobriety gave her. So she started seeing a therapist, was encouraged to go to AA. Raising her son gave her a higher purpose to continue living alcohol-free. She went from being the life of the party to encouraging others through her own actions to seek a life unhindered by substances. It’s raw, inspiring, and filled with moments that will leave you rethinking what it means to live on your own terms.

Rerun: Get Sober and Stay Sober as a Person of Color with Tammi Scott, Sober for 27 Years
There’s a lot happening here at Stack'n'Days headquarters, and we’re excited to share some big personal updates with you next week in a brand-new solo episode! But today, we’re re-airing a fan-favorite conversation from episode 37 with Tammi Scott. Tammi’s journey, from being a single mother of three to getting sober in a 12-step program and staying sober for 27 years, is incredibly relatable. Now, as a yoga teacher and mentor in the sobriety space, she uses the lessons she’s learned to guide others. In this episode, she talks about coming home to yourself, especially as a Black woman in the U.S.
Tammi’s Toolkit:
12 steps program
Yoga
Therapy
Writing
Learning about self compassion
Hiking
Community
The Early Struggles
Tammi opens up about her early days as a single mother of three, using alcohol and drugs to cope. Overwhelmed and internally struggling, it took a therapist's insight to link her substance use with her depression, sparking the beginning of her self-discovery journey.
The 12-Step Program
Tammi shares her journey into the transformative 12-step program, underscoring its pivotal role in her recovery. Her first AA meeting marked a turning point, providing a sense of community and resonant stories. Tammi stresses the importance of supportive communities and mentors in the recovery process.
Holistic Healing
As Tammi progressed in recovery, she explored holistic healing modalities like yoga and writing. These practices deepened her self-understanding and offered comfort and grounding. Tammi emphasizes the significance of self-compassion and cultivating kindness towards oneself.
Ongoing Growth
Throughout the episode, Tammi acknowledges that recovery is an ongoing process. She urges mindfulness against complacency and emphasizes prioritizing sobriety, even during stable periods.
Healing as a Woman of Color
Tammi's experience as a woman of color has had a significant impact on her journey of recovery. Throughout her early days of sobriety, she faced the double-edged sword of being a person of color in predominantly white spaces. She felt the weight of societal expectations and the lack of support for women of color in professional settings. This added layer of complexity made it challenging for Tammi to fully express herself and find her place in the recovery community. Additionally, the racial injustices and violence against people of color deeply affected her, but she struggled to find understanding and empathy within the 12-step community. Despite these obstacles, Tammi has persevered and found her own path to healing and self-discovery, embracing her identity as a black woman and using her experiences to uplift and support others.
Current Involvements
Tammi is actively involved in facilitating sober support community meetings and co-teaching online sober courses both at The Luckiest Club. Her passion lies in sharing experiences and assisting others in their recovery journeys. Tammi plans to teach yoga, focusing on heart-centered work and creating spaces for healing and self-discovery.

Mamba Mentality: Anne Skriba Turned her Trauma into Triumph #55
In this episode, host Ray Donovan sits down with former college basketball player and coach Anne Skriba to discuss her journey through addiction, recovery, and the healing power of therapy. Anne opens up about how the pressures of being an athlete led her to use alcohol as a coping mechanism and how the pandemic pushed her deeper into isolation. She shares the pivotal moments that led her to sobriety, including the impact of her therapist's powerful words and how she applied the 'Mamba mentality' to her recovery. Together, Ray and Anne dive into the unspoken struggles athletes face, the silence around substance abuse in sports, and the importance of mental health in personal growth.
Anne’s Toolkit:
Understand your trauma to address it
Therapy is a crucial tool
Break the silence
Recognize coping mechanisms
New tools for healing
Advocate for mental health
Surround yourself with a support system
Understanding Sobriety: Anne’s Journey and the Athletic Influence
Anne Skriba’s approach to sobriety was profoundly shaped by her background as an athlete. Her journey into recovery was not marked by rigid discipline but rather by a mindset of curiosity and self-improvement. This perspective stemmed from her athletic discipline or “Mamba Mentality,” where the focus is on continuous growth and learning.
Anne reflects on this approach: “I realized that the way I approached basketball—constantly striving for improvement, understanding my weaknesses, and learning from them—could be applied to my recovery. Instead of viewing sobriety as just a set of rules to follow, I saw it as an opportunity for self-discovery and growth.”
This mindset allowed her to view her recovery through a lens of exploration and self-betterment. Rather than imposing strict, punitive measures on herself, she embraced a more compassionate and inquisitive approach, questioning whether her behaviors, including alcohol use, truly served her well-being.

He discusses the delicate balance of neurotransmitters, the chemicals that communicate between nerve cells, and how alcohol disrupts this balance. This imbalance could lead to longer-term consequences on cognition and mental health. Dr. Douyon advises to be mindful of your drinking habits and understand the risks associated with them.

Instagram Versus Reality- Sobriety And Recovery Edition: Ray Explores Perceptions Of Sobriety #48
In this solo episode Ray looks at three issues he has experienced in his sobriety journey. He discusses the fact that very few celebrities of color speak about sobriety and applauds those who do. He highlights that the portrayal of sobriety online and in the media is different to the reality but emphasizes that despite this difference, sobriety is one of the most rewarding and beneficial things you can do for yourself. He also talks about sobriety fatigue and offers advice on how to get through it.
Empowering Representation
Ray begins by highlighting the significance of celebrities of color sharing their journeys of sobriety. He points to Tiffany Haddish as a powerful example of representation in the media. "You don't really hear a lot of folks of color, specifically black people, celebrities, that is, talking about some of these darker aspects," Ray reflects, emphasizing the importance of diverse voices in the narrative of recovery.
The Misleading Portrayal on Social Media
Ray dives into the misleading portrayal of sobriety on social media. He critiques the trend of "influencer sobriety," where addiction seems like a distant memory, painting an overly simplistic picture. "Influencer sobriety is a world where alcohol addiction is history, but it's all too neat," Ray remarks, stressing the need for honesty and realism about the challenges of recovery.
Facing Sobriety Fatigue
Ray shares his own experiences of sobriety fatigue. "I feel as though that there is a, oftentimes, at least for me, there was a honeymoon, right? In early sobriety, you're really trying to stack those days and maintain a degree of clarity." He discusses the exhaustion that can accompany long-term recovery and the importance of staying engaged in the journey despite the challenges.
Ray emphasizes the value of finding tools and support that work for each individual's recovery journey. Whether it's therapy, support groups, or creative outlets, he encourages listeners to explore what resonates with them personally.

The Early Struggles

The 12-Step Program
Tammi shares her journey into the transformative 12-step program, underscoring its pivotal role in her recovery. Her first AA meeting marked a turning point, providing a sense of community and resonant stories. Tammi stresses the importance of supportive communities and mentors in the recovery process.

Healing as a Woman of Color
Tammi's experience as a woman of color has had a significant impact on her journey of recovery.
Redefining her role in her Indian culture through boundaries, healing and sobriety with Prakruti #24
Alcohol abuse and culture, sweeping things under the rug and healing from trauma experienced as a teenager are some of the key things discussed on this week’s Stack’n’Days podcast by host Ray and guest Prakruti. Prakruti shares her story from her upbringing in the US with her Indian parents to being a mother teaching her children about boundaries and emotional intelligence. She also shares the tools and tips she has used in her pursuit of sobriety.
Growing up and pursuit of happiness
Prakruti discusses growing up in an Indian community where there was a lot of focus on getting achievement and into prestigious universities. She prioritized her own happiness, which was seen as strange by both the Indian community and her school peers. Despite caring about others' opinions, Prakruti always tried to stay true to herself. Prakruti emphasizes that the pursuit of happiness was a long-term journey filled with challenges, but she is now in a good place. She says sobriety helped her to finally get there.
Feeling like an outsider
Prakruti discusses how she felt like “the brown sheep” in her family. With her family she didn’t feel Indian enough and in the outside world in the US she didn’t feel American enough. She started using substances, like alcohol, in her teenage years to try to fit in and have shared experiences. However, she has since realized that real authentic connections are formed without substances.
Lack of representation and stigma in addiction recovery space
Prakruti discusses attending Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings. She shares her experience of finding support and belonging in AA despite initially questioning her identity as an alcoholic. She highlights the challenge of being a person of color in recovery and emphasizes the significance of acknowledging and embracing her identity. Prakruti, however, expresses frustration at the lack of diversity, particularly the absence of brown people. She mentions how she created a medallion with a brown Wonder Woman character on it, as all the options were of white characters. Prakruti also talks about the stigma and shame associated with addiction, especially for women, and how it can prevent individuals from seeking help.
Overcoming addiction
Prakruti abuses multiple substances including alcohol and cocaine. She achieved success in her life while she was using substances so it took some time for her to realise it was a problem. She eventually realized that her addiction was harming her children and decided to pursue sobriety.
Feeling all of the feelings
Prakruti says that in her culture mental health issues aren’t often well received. When she was depressed people kept telling her how blessed she is and that she should be grateful. Prakruti emphasizes that it is possible to experience both gratitude and sadness simultaneously.
Experiencing major events sober
Prakruti went through a divorce while sober. This was challenging but she managed to dig deep and get through it.
Trauma, substance use and cultural expectations
Prakruti discusses how a traumatic incident impacted her self-perception and led to substance use as a coping mechanism. She mentions that her experience is a common one and expresses empathy for others who may have similar experiences. Prakruti talks about the cultural perspective on alcoholism and substance use in Indian culture and the pressure she felt as a young person to conform to expectations. She shares her determination to break these cycles for her own daughters and emphasizes the difference between the group-oriented worldview in Indian culture and the individualistic perspective in American culture.

Despite maintaining good grades and receiving a full scholarship, she had a darker side involving substance abuse. She also noticed herself gravitating towards unhealthy relationships and making poor decisions. Leia's struggle with alcohol began at the age of 13 and continued until she quit drinking in 2019.
Relationship between trauma and substance abuse
Leia discusses the connection between trauma and substance abuse. Growing up in a Mexican American household religion and resilience were the main coping mechanisms Leia was taught about, rather than therapy and healing. However, she later realized that she was hurting and had been holding in emotions from childhood trauma. She used alcohol to sooth this pain.
Overcoming alcohol addiction
Leia’s path to overcoming alcohol addiction was not always smooth. She had several moments that showed her how important it was that she give up alcohol but she didn’t fully commit until she was diagnosed with a tumour and had to undergo a hysterectomy. Her uncle had recently passed away due to complications from cancer involving alcohol. While Leia was out for the surgery she had a vision of her uncle appearing and told her she didn't have to drink. She felt that this was a spiritual awakening in her life.
Denial and addiction
Leia discusses her struggle with alcohol addiction and her initial denial of being the problem. She mentions losing custody of her daughter, moving back in with her parents, and feeling demoted in life. Leia admits to using alcohol as a way to grieve but not taking responsibility for things. It is only through therapy and spiritual experiences that she begins to acknowledge her addiction.
Overcoming trauma and finding freedom
Leia shares her personal journey of losing custody of her daughter, going through a divorce, and facing the impact of alcohol on her life. She discusses how therapy helped her uncover past trauma. Leia also talks about experiencing “drunk dreams” and being diagnosed with PTSD. She emphasizes the importance of healing and owning your story, even if it takes years to do so.
Finding support in sobriety
Leia emphasizes the importance of having mentors and support systems in various aspects of life, including sobriety. She mentions her "sober support sisters", who all help each other on their journeys. Leia highlights the comfort and empowerment she felt being surrounded by successful women who acknowledged their struggles and the importance of admitting to having a problem.
Key components in the sobriety journey
Leia discusses her journey of sobriety and the purpose she found along the way. She talks about her book A Star for Stella. Leia emphasizes the importance of finding the why to live sober and the healing process.
Leia discusses the importance of being a positive role model for her daughter and not succumbing to alcoholism. She admits that while she doesn't have the desire to drink, certain triggers, such as holidays and being alone, can affect her mood and make her feel emotional. Leia copes with these triggers by going to the gym and trying not to dwell on regrets or shame.

Creating a social life without alcohol with Ryann Cooke #21
On this week’s Stack’n’Days podcast host Ray is speaking to Ryann Cooke, founder of Rys. Rys (Radiate your sobriety) is a BIPOC-centered app for those who are sober or sober-curious and is in the development stages. Ryann shares her journey with alcohol and how it started as a means of escape and fun in high school.
Struggles with alcohol and seeking help
Ryann recounts a New Year's Eve incident where she ended up in the hospital after a night of drinking. Despite this experience, she continued drinking and didn't see it as a problem until she turned 25 and started seeing a new therapist. The therapist helped her realize the connection between her trauma and drinking, leading her to express a genuine desire to quit.
Experience with AA meetings
Ryann tried attending AA meetings but felt uncomfortable in some meetings, being the only woman and the only black person in the first meeting she attended and then the only black person in an all-women group she found. After a relapse, she found BIPOC AA meetings, which provided some support. However, she still felt that the meetings followed outdated rules.
Ryann shares her negative experiences in AA meetings, including feeling unsafe and not having her opinions valued. She mentions being preyed upon by an older man and feeling unsupported by the group. These experiences led her to leave AA and seek support elsewhere.
Navigating change and building a foundation in a new city
Ryann discusses her experience of moving from Washington, D.C. to Tulsa and the challenges she faced during this transition. The rules in AA discouraged big changes before a year of sobriety but Ryann felt this move would be good for her. She made an effort to get to know people and engage in activities she enjoyed.
Building a sobriety toolkit and finding support
Ryann discusses the steps she took to build her own toolkit for staying sober, including finding a new therapist in her new home and connecting with other sober individuals through social media. She emphasizes the importance of maintaining a routine and staying connected with family while building a new life.
Openness about sobriety
Ryann talks about openly sharing her journey of sobriety on social media and the vulnerability and accountability that come with it. She emphasizes the importance of not putting her life on hold for sobriety and finding a way to pursue both. She celebrates her soberversary and plans to go to a spa for this year's celebration.
Ryann explains that she started sharing her journey of sobriety on Instagram to show the shift in her life and reach out to other young black women who were part of a boozy culture. She wanted to break the taboo and show that stopping drinking can lead to positive changes.
Building an app for sobriety
Ryann discusses her journey of building an app for sobriety, Rys, which is BIPOC-centered and aims to create a community for those who are sober, sober-curious, or looking to drink less. The app allows users to connect with others, find non-alcoholic events and venues, and support one another. She is currently conducting product market research and organizing events to gather feedback and understand user preferences.
She is also in the process of looking for funding for the app.
Advice for a sober lifestyle
Ryann advises someone pursuing an alcohol-free life of sobriety to not be afraid to ask for help and find a trusted person to confide in. She suggests taking small steps.

Leading a meaningful life without alcohol with Shari Hampton #19
In this episode of the Stack'n'Days podcast, host Ray interviews Shari Hampton, who has been sober for eight years and runs a nonprofit called Served Up Sober that offers holistic services to marginalised communities. Shari is also a life and recovery coach and group facilitator. The episode covers a range of topics related to addiction and recovery, including personal experiences with addiction, cultural norms around alcohol consumption, overcoming addiction through a raw diet, and supporting loved ones through addiction struggles.
Personal history with alcohol and addiction
Shari shares her personal history with alcohol and addiction, starting from her teenage years as a young, gay person trying to find a sense of community in the LGBTQ+ bar scene.
Dependency on alcohol and cultural norms
Sherri discusses how alcohol became a default mechanism for stress relief and sleep. She also explores the cultural norms and generational patterns that have normalized alcohol consumption as a coping mechanism within their BIPOC communities.
Trying to quit drinking
Shari moved from San Diego to Indianapolis to make a change and shake off her addiction, but it turned out to be the worst seven or eight years of her life because she didn't work on herself. Shari had three DUIs and had to enter a program immediately upon moving to Minneapolis. She tried to find help through church and inpatient programs but just couldn't quit. She was able to string together nine months of sobriety but received a phone call from her dad that changed everything.
Bad news from Shari’s father
One day, Shari’s father called her and told her he had three months to live. She felt justified in drinking and started drinking heavily again. She quit her job and moved back to California to be with her father. However, her father lived for four more years while she continued to drink heavily and wasted the time she had with him. She did get sober 3 months before he passed away though. Shari discusses her regret during her first year of sobriety, feeling like she wasted time with her father due to drinking.
Overcoming addiction through holistic wellness
While Shari was home with her father she spent some time staying with psychiatrist and family friend Dr. Brewer. He put her on a raw diet and taught her the value of self-care through psychoanalysis, hypnosis, and meditation.
Finding purpose and passion in sobriety
Shari discusses how to find purpose and passion in sobriety, and how to identify the things that make life meaningful. She emphasizes the importance of tapping into one's passions and interests, and how alcohol can hinder one's ability to pursue those things.
Coping with loss and sobriety
Shari talks about how the deaths of several loved ones tested her sobriety. She was able to stay sober through her father's funeral because she wanted to honor him, but she didn't feel the same urge to drink during subsequent losses. She believes that the deaths of these special people in her life kept her sober because she couldn't chase death with a cocktail.
Navigating relapse in addiction recovery
Shari says she views relapses in addiction recovery as opportunities for growth and information. She encourages clients to examine what may have triggered the relapse and use it as a way to plan for the future.
