Starting Seeds

By Elizabeth Copeland

Welcome to STARTING SEEDS; a podcast loosely about hobbyist gardeners but more about literal grounding: what can we learn with our hands in the dirt? What does it tell us about ourselves and the world around us?

STARTING SEEDS is the thought that as humans, we turn to nature for comfort, creativity, and inspiration. And in that, lessons we learn in tending a garden or caring for plants spill over into our personal, professional, and private lives. There is no silver bullet. These lessons belong to all of us.

Starting Seeds: Episode 4 - Amber Powell (on gallivanting, roots, and alpaca yoga)

Starting Seeds: Episode 4 - Amber Powell (on gallivanting, roots, and alpaca yoga)

In our third interview, meet Amber Powell, an accomplished automotive professional in the Atlanta area. The longest episode so far, El and Amber spoke for two hours and we almost posted the whole video! But instead, we took the key parts, which really boil down to: how do we maintain balance in our lives when we're prone to burn hot, how do we grow when we're met with trouble, and how do we trust that we are taking care of ourselves while actively taking care of the world around us?

Starting Seeds: Episode 3 - Dr. Caitlin (on caring for people, plants, children, and gummy bears)

Starting Seeds: Episode 3 - Dr. Caitlin (on caring for people, plants, children, and gummy bears)

In our second interview, meet Dr. Caitlin Collier. Caitlin is a Family Medicine doctor in South Carolina, raising two boys that she adopted after bringing them home as a foster parent.

Caitlin's interview was delightful to me personally because Caitlin has always been a warm, humble, thoughtful person who doesn't take herself too seriously, who has always been constantly doing the hard work of caring for others. Specifically, Caitlin is now a M.D. who is now not only exemplifying those characteristics while taking care of her patients, but also teaching other soon-to-be-doctors how to care for those around us with empathy, intention, and joy.

Join us as we also talk a good bit about fostering, adopting, and the grief that comes with deciding what is important and how we're going to make that important thing happen -- especially in a world where we're told by social media, our communities, and our own desires that we can have it all. What if we actually can't, and how do we cope?

Starting Seeds: Episode 2 - Forrest & Dave (on potato berries, board games, and doing what you can)

Starting Seeds: Episode 2 - Forrest & Dave (on potato berries, board games, and doing what you can)

In our first interview, meet Forrest and Dave, Kentucky natives who live outside of Louisville. Forrest is an Instructional Designer and Dave is his loyal pal who "helps" with the garden.  In this episode, join the three of us as we talk about Forrest's lineage of gardening, from his parents, to his great aunt, to his use of heirloom black beans, and how he uses each of these influences to ground him in his day-to-day life.

We'll talk about taking life as it comes to us, the fact that potatoes have berries, and board games. Ultimately, we hope you'll take out of this that gardening is for everyone and starting somewhere is better than never starting.

Let's Grow!

Let's Grow!

In our inaugural Episode, learn a little bit about why Starting Seeds exists, and how watermelon and grief are interconnected to our host. This won’t be our typical format, but perhaps we’ll do little shorts like this in between interviews. Listen to it on YouTube or where ever you like to listen to podcasts!
