Episode 32: Work Smarter, Not Harder with Ashutosh Priyadarshy

Work smarter, not harder.

That’s what Ashutosh Priyadarshy, Founder of Sunsama, helps the world’s most successful professionals do each day with his daily planner that organizes everything you need to do today in one place: tasks, meetings, emails, you name it.

Like many entrepreneurs, Ashutosh’s startup journey was not a linear one. In the first 4.5 years after founding Sunsama, Ashutosh and his co-founder, Travis, launched, iterated on, and sunsetted six different products in the meeting, collaboration, and productivity space. Now, seven years later, they’ve finally found product fit and feel confident about the product they have, in big part thanks to their time at Y Combinator.

Tune in to hear Ashutosh talk about how and why he stuck with his long journey toward building the Sunsama we know today, what he learned along the way, and what he’s working on for the future.

You can find Ashutosh on Twitter or LinkedIn (let him know you found him through the Startup Happy Hour podcast), and don’t forget to check out Sunsama at the link below!

Ashutosh Priyadarshy was part of the W19 cohort at Y Combinator. To hear another perspective on Y Combinator, listen to Episode 5 with Ben Taylor, Founder of Doorport (acquired by PointCentral), who was also in the W19 cohort at YC.

Episode 31: Using Data to Solve the World's Biggest Problems with Andrew Ehrenberg

Episode 31: Using Data to Solve the World's Biggest Problems with Andrew Ehrenberg

Can you really use data and AI to solve social justice issues like racism and do good for the world?

Andrew Ehrenberg thinks so. As a data scientist at DataRobot, Andrew works day in and day out with massive data dumps to build models and make predictions for the owners of that data. DataRobot has essentially operationalized the best practices of world class data scientists and machine learning engineers to help organizations turn their data (questions) into predictions (answers).

Andrew’s work at DataRobot has inspired him to think big and imagine other applications of data science and automated machine learning to create a larger impact in our world.

Tune in to hear how Andrew went from being a college kid who just wanted to talk about sports all day to getting plugged into all facets of University of Michigan’s entrepreneurial community (shoutout to his best bud, David Silverman, who was featured in Episode 9) and now focusing on using the newest technologies available to us in impactful and innovative ways.

You can email Andrew at andrew.ehrenberg@datarobot.com or find him on Twitter or LinkedIn (let him know you found him through the Startup Happy Hour podcast), and don’t forget to check out DataRobot at the link below!

Episode 29: A Decade of Lessons with Tim Pabich

Episode 29: A Decade of Lessons with Tim Pabich

Having just celebrated its 10 year anniversary, Magnitech isn’t technically a startup anymore but still very much operates like one. Much of that startup mentality can be attributed to Magnitech’s CEO and Founder, Tim Pabich, who believes in identifying unique strengths in each of his team members and empowering each person to do the work that truly fulfills them.

Magnitech is an IT managed services provider (“MSP”) - or, in simpler terms, an outsourced IT department for small and mid-sized companies. They provide the whole suite of services - a full blown service desk, project management, cyber security, disaster recovery, and pretty much anything an IT department would provide for a business.

Tune in to hear how Tim got his start in entrepreneurship, how he managed to build and scale a company over a decade, his best advice for newer founders, and his predictions for future changes in technology that will affect the way businesses operate.

You can email Tim at info@magnitech.com or find him on LinkedIn (let him know you found him through the Startup Happy Hour podcast), and don’t forget to check out Magnitech at the links below!

Episode 28: No Task is Too Small with Rebecca Kersch

Episode 28: No Task is Too Small with Rebecca Kersch

Inspired by her auntie, a first generation immigrant who worked hard to send money back home to the Philippines, only to have to pay a whole month’s worth of salary every year in transaction fees, Rebecca Kersch knew there had to be a better way. That’s why she founded TANG App, a payment platform that lets anyone from the US (or other countries) send money and phone credit (a new addition in response to Covid-19) to the Philippines, and eventually to the whole world. Think: a global Venmo.

Rebecca shares about how she built TANG App, from facing tons of rejection to finally finding her tribe to building her team and now growing the business while staying super involved on the ground. She has an attitude that no task is too small for her, despite being the Founder and CEO of the company, and she genuinely cares about connecting with and listening to each and every customer.

She also shares about her personal background of being a Dutch-Filipina who grew up mostly in the Netherlands and how that has impacted her journey toward entrepreneurship.

Tune in to hear all this and more in a fast-paced and fun episode!

You can find Rebecca on Twitter or on LinkedIn (let her know you found her through the Startup Happy Hour podcast), and don’t forget to check out TANG App at the link below!

Episode 26: Addicted to Challenges with Jay Hsueh

Reducing inefficiencies is every entrepreneur’s goal, but Jay Hsueh, Founder and CEO at Roby, has managed to solve an inefficiency that has plagued corporate offices for decades.

Roby helps companies streamline their help desk support tasks, like scheduling meetings, managing meeting rooms, controlling office temperature, and more so that all members on the team can work more efficiently and effectively.

This has been an interesting time for Jay as he has had to pivot with the environment, as more and more companies are shifting toward a fully remote or hybrid work setting. Luckily, Jay is “addicted to challenges” (his words, not mine) and already has some exciting new plans for Roby in place.

Tune in to hear more about the future of Roby, as well as Jay’s startup story, from working as an engineer in Taiwan to experiencing corporate life in the U.S. to finally discovering his passion for entrepreneurship. Jay’s positive attitude is infectious, so if you’re looking for something to smile about today, make sure you check out this episode.

Episode 21: Changing the Lives of Millennial Women with Tori & Heidi Ganahl

They say not to mix business with family, but what do “they” know anyway? Mother-daughter duo Heidi and Tori Ganahl are not only rocking their business as co-founders of SheFactor but also inspiring and changing the lives of so many young women in their 20s and 30s.

While Heidi (the mom) has always had an entrepreneurial bug, Tori (the daughter) joined this venture purely out of a need she saw in the space with young people - especially women - graduating college with little direction as to a career path and subsequently dragging through careers and jobs that don’t fulfill them.

Unlike many businesses that were hit hard by Covid-19, SheFactor has thrived. Their meetups over Zoom have exploded, and right now they’re planning for one of their biggest events yet - the SheFactor Wellness Summit, which launches on October 29.

Tune in to hear how Tori and Heidi got the idea for SheFactor, how they were able to exponentially grow their membership during a pandemic, how their mother-daughter dynamic plays out in business, and what you (our female listener) can gain from joining SheFactor today.

Episode 14: Building a Female FinTech Community with Sasha Pilch

Originally hailing from Australia, Sasha Pilch found startup paradise in the U.S. when she visited New York City three years ago, and she hasn’t left since. She currently heads new business at Ramp and runs NYC Fintech Women with her co-founder, Michelle Tran.

What started as a way to build Sasha’s own network of fintech contacts in NYC has turned into a community of 5,000+ women (and men!) who are passionate about supporting women in fintech. Sasha and Diana talk about the importance of male allyship in achieving equality in a heavily male-dominated space.

While many people think sales is about the hustle and grind and that “a good salesperson can sell anything to anyone,” Sasha has a different take.

Tune in to hear her advice for salespeople and for women in tech, and to hear the gutsy story of how she turned her back to 10 years of working at big banks to work at a startup company in a foreign country.

Episode 10: From Religious Conservative to Social Justice Warrior with Meggie Abendschein

In this episode, Diana chats with Founder and CEO of Moxie Mouth, Meggie Abendschein.

Moxie Mouth is a social justice consulting agency dedicated to flipping the script on social impact and designing strategies outside of the traditional philanthropic box. While Meggie’s work is focused on the four areas of (1) women, (2) children, (3) mental health, and (4) antiracism, much of her work recently - in light of the resurgence of the BLM movement in our country - has been focused on antiracism efforts.

Meggie shares her story of growing up in the typical Southern home with conservative and religious (Baptist) ideals to learning to form her own belief system in college to mustering up the courage to publicly stand up for what she believes (at the expense of alienating many of her close connections) when she founded Moxie Mouth. She also talks about what it’s like being a female in a male-dominated industry and offers her advice to other women looking to start their own companies - especially those in the nonprofit world and/or centered on social justice issues.

Listen until the end to find out what Meggie’s offering to all women listening and where Moxie Mouth is headed in the future!
