Steno Talk
By Steno Talk Podcast
We are determined to create a community where both students and working reporters can come together and share their experiences and the tips that helped them grow while in court reporting school. We want to create a space where our listeners can feel like they're just hanging out with friends talking about court reporting.
We realized that we not only share an obsession for coffee but we're both also really passionate about this profession.

S2 E12 - Certs Simplified
S2 E11 - From the other side of the machine.
New Year, new podcast episode!
What does your support system look like? How can you effectively support your partner and/or spouse in this challenging journey? This week we bring some amazing perspectives of what that looks like. Court reporting school (and even your first year of work) isn't easy to navigate alone and can be overwhelming even for those around us. We gathered your questions and sat down with the Steno Husband himself, Jose, to see what this adventure looks like on the other side of the machine.
So grab your partner/significant other/family member and listen to our latest episode to .see what it’s like supporting a member of the steno community.
S2 E10 - Beyond Judy Justice with Whitney Kumar
S2 E9- The Mentee/Mentor Relationship (Part 2)
Are you a student looking for a mentor, or a working reporter looking to give back to the steno community? On this episode of Steno Talk we finish interviewing Nicole Bulldis and McKalie Bellew as they shine some light on what it really means to be and have a mentor. It’s so crucial for students to have a mentor and someone to lean on while on their court reporting journey. Keep in mind that mentors aren’t just for students either! Think of all the things you’ll be thrown into once you certify and how many questions you’ll have, and why stop at one? Get all the mentors! Put yourself out there and make those connections and reap the benefits!

S2 EP8: Why Advocating for the Profession is Important
We are so excited to bring y’all this new episode Wednesday featuring Shaunise Day, a passionate advocate for the Steno community just in time for the Fearless Stenographers Conference! Tune in on your way to the conference, and even if you aren’t attending, Shaunise gives highlights of what the conference is all about as well as her take on why being an advocate for the profession is so important to her! Shaunise Day, steno advocate and pillar in the steno community was born and raised in Oakland, California. After some trials and tribulations on her steno journey, Shaunise decided to take on leadership roles within the court reporting and captioning profession. Shaunise is the founder of Steno in the City and host of the Confessions of a Stenographer podcast. She also serves on numerous boards and committees and has been a speaker at many association conventions. S2 EP7: What We Learned Our First Year of Reporting
Sit back and relax or pull up your steno machine and practice to these funny stories as we relive our first year on the record.
Today also marks our very own Anna Mar-Lazo’s one-year anniversary of being an official Texas CSR!
So much to celebrate and so happy to be back! 🙌🏽
S2 EP6: So you aren't out of school yet? It's cool.
How many times have you been asked when you're going to graduate or be out of school? Yeah, us too. We get it. It's so freaking hard guys! But, in this episode, we wanted to bring you all together and talk about what the court reporting school journey really looks like in the real world. Court reporting school is hard enough, especially when life happens. For those of you still on your court reporting school journey, we'll see you on the other side because you got this, and we're here for it no matter how long it takes.

S2 EP5: The one and only Rose Detloff and Allie Hall
You all know who Allie is because we’ve had the pleasure of interviewing her before on Episode 10, but now we have one of her students Rose Detloff joining her this time to talk about her miraculous journey through school. Listen as we give Rose and Allie a Q&A on their thoughts on practice, mindset, and how to get through court reporting school. This lady sought out Allie Hall and excelled through her program and certified at light speed. Right out of theory (while finishing a bachelor's degree and working) and into speed building, she was already testing at 180/200wpm tests. And she didn't stop there folks. She went right for the RPR and all under 12 months.

S2 EP4: To interrupt, or not to interrupt?
Should reporters be seen and not heard? Should we be as quiet as a potted plant in the corner of the room?! Does the thought of interrupting leave you shaking in your boots (or heels?) In this episode, we dive right into why interrupting leaves us with this fear, and how we can combat it. We talk about what causes it, and how to gain the breath and the confidence to use our voices and speak up “FOR THE RECORD.” But what about audio? What about that attorney with that look on his/her face? The answers are simple and straightforward and yet, it’s a huge struggle for a working reporter. And students? Do they even talk about interrupting in school? Heck no! This is a topic that is connected with so many other things and we got the queen of speaking up for the record for y’all. Let’s all find our voice! Let’s get this party started!

S2 EP3: New StenoTalk, who dis?
Obviously, Steno Talk has been going through some changes, so let us bring you up to speed! If you haven't seen us on social media (then you need to follow usssss....), you may not know that we're losing one of our own, Katie Morfin, to pursue her Thrive course and to take care of her mentees; we're so proud of her! She's doing great things for this profession and its students, folks. That being said, we introduce a new (not-so) co-host from behind the curtain... CANDICE! You'll learn a little bit about our producer, now co-host, on this episode of Season 2, and we'll talk about some of the ideas we have for future episodes that we'd love for you to weigh in on.
For ideas, questions, comments, ANYTHING! We want to hear from you: stenotalkpodcast@gmail.com
We've also updated our look, and with that comes.... NEW MERCH!
For the "Wheel of Life" exercise mentioned, see more here.
S2 EP2: The one where they return from the national convention.
Did you guys end up going to the convention?! We recap our return and adjusting to our lives again and relive some of our favorite moments from the convention. We share some of our favorite quotes and moments, as well as some of the crazy stories from our time in Las Vegas. For those of you who came and said hello, thank you SO MUCH! We enjoyed seeing all of your faces and chatting with you all tremendously. For those of you who participated in our Hide and Seek game, your prizes are on the way! We are so pumped to share your stories as well. We couldn't be more thankful to attend because we had a great time, tore up the dance floor, ate all the food, and best of all, we got to see you and even made some serious friends!

DO. NOT. MISS. US. AT. CONVENTION! We'll be there. Please come talk to us.
EP12: The one where they chat with Janet Saavedra.
Join us as we talk with Janet about honing in on your goals, removing distractions and toxicity, and staying focused. We’ve talked about networking and social media, but we touch a bit on professionalism and how to balance those aspects of social media in the professional world. Even as a student you should be thinking about your online presence and make sure you’re thinking about what you’re showing the world about who you are. You never know who you might be working for one day! Janet also gives some insight into her practice method and her journey to become a reporter.
Janets Practice Method: Warm up with 20wpm+ your target speed. Then go up 40wpm+ for 2 minutes, and then come back down -20wpm and try to write it perfectly. Write it again. Print it. Highlight areas you need to focus on. Underline your phrases. Take a microscope to it and write your briefs and strokes that you’re missing. Practice those briefs for 2-3 minutes, and then keep doing that for 30 minutes. If you’re really into it, you can push for an hour. This should be your practice for the week, and by the end of the week when you’ve heard that take all week, focus on passing your tests at the end of the week. This is a “practice to perfection” method.

EP9: The one where they hype social media.
FIRST OFFICAL READ BACK?! WHAT? First federal job. We get some more insight as to what a freelance reporter’s day-to-day looks like; Anna has been getting a lot of experience and working hard (even through lunch!) Katie has also been seeing her hard work pay off with moving on to her 160s officially and then getting a pass on her RPR WKT! Next up, CSR WKT! Passes, on passes, on passsssssesssssssssss!
On our topic of social media: ANNA WHY DO YOU POST SO MUCH?! But really, this is something where you essentially put in you want to get out of it. Use it to your advantage, carve out a space for yourself, and don’t be scared! Put yourself out there and talk to other reporters and students. Surround yourself with the people you want to surround yourself with in real life. These are the times. But also, be aware of what you post and who you’re posting it to because everyone is watching. You’re in control of the content you put out. Tailer your feed to where you want to go, and instead of it being a time-suck, it’ll help keep you on track. MAKE IT SERVE YOU AND YOUR GOALS!

EP8: The one where they find mentors.
Court reporting is such a lonely study while you're going through school. In this episode, we talk about how special and crucial mentors are, and they don't go away as soon as you graduate or are done with school. They'll be with you even after you certify, even after you start working! You'll have so many questions in and out of school and sometimes the answers feel out of reach, so having a mentor is such a great resource and can do wonders for support and motivation. Even if you aren't certified or done with school, don't forget that you can have something to offer students too. YOU can be a mentor! Put yourself out there.
Please don't hesitate to reach out to us for questions, thoughts, concerns... ANYTHING! Need a mentor? Pass a test? Love the show?! Tell us! We want to know.

EP7: The one where they battle burnout.
Burn out means you’re done, right? DONE! Wrong. Burn out means you’re working hard, maybe even too hard, but you’ve got to change things up. I’ll quote Einstein here.
“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results”
Talk to your instructor. Have them talk to you about what a reasonable goal is. Voice your frustrations. Constructive feedback might be hard to hear, but if you’re in burn out you have to stop and reevaluate and make.some.changes. Reach out to your mentors, and your friends. There are so many of us who understand the struggle, and if you feel like you have no one… you have US. Please reach out to us on Facebook, Instagram, E-mail… ANYTHING! We’re here. We understand.
Make sure you’re taking care of YOURSELF and you’re not just working yourself to the bone. Balance is key. Plan at least one activity you can do just for yourself that isn’t “work.” PLAN. IT. DO. IT.
If you send us your passes/successes, you’ll automatically be featured and entered into a giveaway for a piece of merch of your choice! We want to celebrate with you. We also have another giveaway for a steno cover and a merch item on Instagram! We want to hear from listeners new and old! This giveaway closes on the 16th. Find us on Instagram/Facebook or e-mail us at contact@stenotalkpodcast.com.

EP6: The one where tests make them anxious (not.)
TCRA students! Don't miss out on the student hangout on the 1st Monday of every month!
Have you ever blanked out and not heard words? Experienced loud breathing, shaking, stacking, or freezing up? Remove the pressure. Breathe. Visualize the after. So much of this is mental. Focus more on the SKILL and less on the RESULTS.
Remove the pressure. Hydrate. Incorporate positive self-talk. Daydream positivity. Get your blood flowing and sleep when you need it. Fuel your body. Write down your feelings and acknowledge them. Prepare so you're confident.
Focus on the training, skill, and preparation, and have fun during the test!
We have so much to talk about here, so get your day planners and cup of coffee ready to finally start to break down that test anxiety.

The one where they get down and dirty with Smurf.
We had such a wonderful time talking (and sharing a TON of laughs) with the wonderful Sarah Murphy! (@sarah_e_murphy) She talks about her practice and testing methods as well as what going through school and taking the CSR exam was like for her, and Anna. Did you take yours in person, or through ProctorU?
I mean, could you imagine being the ONLY person to pass your theory class and then have to teach yourself the second half of theory?! This community is so small and it's so refreshing to hear other peoples' journeys. Sarah goes over her time in school as well as her CSR exam. You won't want to miss her discuss her pre-test ritual! She shares some really great tips on mindfulness and affirmations that are so refreshing. We also get some insight into what it's like being a fresh reporter and finding the balance in a very demanding career.

EP4: The one where they talk about relationships, family, kids... everything!
What does it mean to "give 100%?" How can you possibly give all of your commitments 100%?! Something has got to give. You can't do it all, so what can you do? Everybody has to pitch in. Accept it. We all know the struggle of other commitments... jobs, kids, family, and everything in between! So what do you know? Don't feel alone. It's all worth it. Hang out with us while we go over our own personal struggles and the sacrifice it takes. We're all tired. Not everybody can do this, folks. Burn out is *REAL* when you're on this journey. Even if it means to get practice in 10 minutes intervals. That's what that it means to give it your all! We also address the questions from family that come with being in court reporting school and how it's nothing like another profession or degree. Make sure you're ready with tissues on this one! This is all a part of YOUR story. Take notes, and be a badass. As always, we take the time to answer your questions and discuss any topics that you're interested in. EP2: The one where they build some speed.
The bulk of the episode will go over speed building and the many ways to go about it and what worked for us. We talk about progressing and not progressing, changing theories, study patterns, taking speed tests, and what it takes to build speed. Being. "stuck." is. not. bad. (Say that again.) We all have a full life to live that includes children, relationships, and work, so, we'll talk about how we've managed to make the adjustments needed to make progress.
