Re-settled in Beijing

Happy Belated Mother’s Day!

South Korea in retrospect: what do I think now? Could I have lived there? SHOULD I have lived there?

Back to work, but it’s slow going so looks like I’ll have some time to get some other projects done. How is MYMYM2024 going? It’s not. BUT, in saying that, I have to acknowledge that my original intent was to simply get really good and fast at creating video content. I think I’ve done that.

And I think I accidentally cancelled my Chinese tax application! Bargh!

Back in the Beej!

How was the last day in South Korea?

Sorry for the delay, but I guess I was kind of exhausted.

Early morning train, but then there are more??

Didn’t sleep much anyway because of all the other guests in the hotel room partying it up! Laughing, listening to music-ing, drinking, puking, it was all there! So we made sure to shuffle a bit louder when we got up.

Getting a cab wasn’t too hard, but it was still nerve wracking. Playlist included:

Whitney Houston - I will always love you

Pamala Scott - Paradise

Tom Jones - Keep on running

Wham - A careless whisper

Can’t say any of those songs were really what I was looking for at that moment.

Made it for the 5.20 train, arrived in Seoul around 8.00am. Slept most of the way.

Stowed luggage, only 3000 won (plus 500 because we were 4 minutes late!)

Off to Songnyemun Gate / Namdaemun Gate, apparently built in 1398. A rather quick walk-through.

Then to Namdaemun market, tried some food. No need to buy anything. Was careful not to burn our tongues.

Walk around the neighbourhood, TRIED to get MEGA COFFEE but COULDN’T because they only took digital payments, no cash. Or, at least, there was no effort to take our money. Settled for Starbucks.

To the airport express, but first some Dunkin Donuts to cap off the trip… yeap, I had a lot this week cause Beijing has none.

Run around the airport trying to claim the tax refund… turns out it was already done to the gf’s credit card.

Move around luggage so everything fits and can be checked, can you pack an electric toothbrush in check luggage? YES. Or at least I did. But if you want piece of mind, take it in your carry on.

Rainy and cold when we left Seoul, beautiful and sunny when we arrived in Beijing. Any smell?

And now… jet lagged?

Last full day in South Korea!

Off to lunch with the chinggu, met a couple of his coworkers who had been in the country for 15 and 20 years. Lunch was a Busan specialty.

Walk over to Haeundae. Can’t say it altogether an exciting walk, but it was nice and peaceful. Like, literally walking in slow motion, very nice compared to Beijing! Lots of cafes all over, the further away from Gwanganli the more they seemed to use pre-packaged pastries and the like, which is something I’ve noticed Chinese cafes do, possibly in an effort to keep things fresh over the long spells when no one comes in. But everybody is drinking coffee here, especially iced coffee.

Tried one of those “big takeaway coffee” places, Compose Coffee - Dutch cold brewed - 3,500 won - not bad, rather bitter, cold brewed-style of coffee. They took cash.

Shinsegae department store, duty free, stopped by a body shop and picked up some soaps and stuff. Tax refund… had to go to another building to apply for it. HUGE department stores, just layers and layers of stuff, obscure possibly high-end names and the like. Trevari Fountain replica, faintly recall being here before.

Haeundae Beach! Long stretch of sand, not as many people as I thought there would be, but it is pretty broad, and a bit chilly. Higher end hotels on the one side of the beach, three massive pillars of apartments on the other.

Walked the entire length, dipped our toes in the water, pictures, etc. Big sand castle festival going on.

Walked over 21 kms total.

Stopped at Sam Ryan’s for dinner, fish and chips and wings. It was pretty good, but it was cold outside and they had all the windows open for the restaurant anyway.

Bus back to Gwanganli - it was a popping!

How was yesterday’s episode? All good to hear? Long, I know, but had to get it in.

How was Nampo Dong? Bronx Coffee - saw these two guys in the shop sealing the coffee packets and I thought that was rather hardcore so I went in and got a few bags of coffee.

How’s your back doing? Much better. Maybe it’s cause of all the walking I DON’T do in Beijing!

How much do you reminisce before you just move on?

Early-ish morning run around Gwanganli Beach, nothing really opens until 9 or 10 am so it was very quiet. But Busan seems to be much quieter overall than Beijing, but that may be an unfair assessment, Busan is just much smaller.

HUGE coffee culture here, as that seems to have exploded in the last few years. Randy’s Donuts? Tried that for breakfast oops HUGE donut!

Then baozi and we disappointed the lady cause I ordered three of whatever, turns out that was three boxes! Fixed that mistake with the translation device and she was not very happy. Ooops.

Takeaway: if you get a to-go cup, you must go!

And then… the old neighborhood!

We did A LOT of walking around the old neighbourhood! Goejeong-gu Saha-gu

Gupyong ChoDongHakYo

  • Met Warren the current English teacher
  • Mr. Joe, current Korean co-teacher
  • Seems like the system has changed, Warren works at two schools now

Fried chicken for dinner! I wanted it. Sat and talked with Warren, told me all about life here especially during the pandemic. Asked if he would mind being interviewed for the pcast and he said yes so stay tuned until the end for his words.

Old apartment is still there, old school is still there, old neighborhood still there!

Lots of people saying no pictures!

Padded seats on the subway! Subways and escalators seem to move a little slower here.

Nampo dong PIFF square for the evening, stopped off at Bronx Cafe where the owners were literally grinding and sealing the coffee packets, you know the drip filter for a cup? So I bought a few bags of their coffee. Hope it’s good!

In Warren’s words, life in South Korea. Listen up!

Down to Busan we go!

How was the train? Nice, 2.5 hours from Seoul Station to Busan Station. FRIED CHICKEN on the way down!! Delicious!

Namsan Tower for the morning, crawled up the walkway, then took the cable car back down. A rather noisy place as there were several kindergartens out on a field trip. Add to that the blaring music and it was a touch on the lively side.

Hey, how was your hotel? Small and expensive ($100 per night) and the green fire escape light was on all night, like… it illuminated the whole place. Small and cramped I’d say, about 500 RMB per night, or $100 CAD. It was quiet when the window was shut but in the morning, around 6.30 or so, there would be some alarm that went off that sounded like birds, only that it wasn’t birds. 6.00 am the church bells went off.

Myeongdong Cathedral, first church in South Korea, also hosts a crypt within which are preserved the remains of several beatified martyrs. Something happened in 1835 or so that these people were killed.

My bet is that you could backpack South Korea in three weeks, as in, see everything that would keep you interested.

How do the podcasts sounds? I forgot to add the “mastering” plugin on Monday’s episode.

And then off to dinner with the pengyous from long ago! How are they doing?

Oh yea, forgot to mention… yesterday’s beers were non-alcoholic… even the gf was surprised haha! Cass Lite, Hite Zero and Heineken Zero! Not bad, and a far cry from what I used to drink here. They have rice wine, makoli, but I haven’t had any just yet.

How many cards do you read at a museum?

Don’t blame TikTok or computers, pottery is to blame for our sedentary lifestyle! hahah So says one of the cards at the museum that the invention of pottery contributed to a more sedentary lifestyle for nomads. Took a few thousand years for TikTok to come around.

National Museum of Korea

-big, main floor was ancient history of Korea

-second floor was donated items (bronze helmet from Berlin Olympics in 1936, guy didn’t receive it till 1986. Now it’s in a museum.)

-cafe: can’t have coffee unless you have a seat

-third floor was an international exhibition, India, Japan, China, Greece and Rome.

-学完就忘 - forgot as soon as I finished.

Went to a restaurant tucked away not too far from, had grilled meat with chicken and some sort of onion and then some sort of sushi-roll looking thing but it was made with mostly eggs and carrots, i think. Served with ketchup and mayonnaise. Odd, it was okay, not sure I’d have it again. Found it because it was recommended on Chinese social media. Everybody else in the restaurant was drinking… except us. The group next to us was a young group, spoke some English. Asked why I wasn’t drinking, said I was trying not to any more as much!

Over to Insadong, some shopping street, but it was quite dead. Maybe we didn’t go to the right place.

-Talked to one lady who was just off work as a barista, broken English, has a bf two years younger, from Seoul, says the city is neither great nor terrible.

Still cold, but not as rainy today.

Annyeonghaseyo! Is that beer can opening? Why yes it is… Hite Zero! Cass Zero and Heineken Zero too!

Back in the So of Ko and tbh, this is the first time I’ve actually travelled through the city.

Rainy and cold-ish, but not overbearing, ie, not so much that we didn’t want to move. As long as we kept moving, we were fine. And if there was no wind.

Gyeongbokgung Palace (景福宫) for the day even as it rained as well as the Korea National Folk Museum. Myeongdong area for the stay, busy busy there as it’s some sort of “festival” going on. Maybe it’s just the night market.

How was getting into South Korea? Easy enough, just took a while to get through passport control. And we had trouble navigating with the APPs because Google Maps wouldn’t show us the Korean and so we had English or Chinese to work with.

I did get a morning jog in before, but it was still difficult to get up. Got up somewhere around 5.30, but didn’t get out of bed until 6.30 or so. Thirty minute job around Myeongdong area.

Overall impressions so far? Grit and grime, poverty is visible, and there are a few memorials around the City Hall area, for the Itaewon Halloween crush that happened as well as a memorial for those who died from the vaccinations, I think.

But the city is popping, lots of tourists and despite all my preparation to speak Korean… A LOT of people speak Chinese!

Tomorrow might be heavier rain so we’ll see if it’s a museum day or if we brave yet another excursion. Namsan Tower possibly on Wednesday before relocating to Busan for a couple of days.

저는 핸드폰에 맥도날드 앱이 있어요.

[앱] app

[Can]

vowel + -ㄹ 수 있다

final consonant + -을 수 있다

수 있어요/수 있었어요/수 있을 거예요

Still MORE internet issues, let’s not dwell.

How was Korean class today? Learned some verbs,

-봐요 (bue yo) - to watch

-얼마에요 (olmayeyo) - how much

-부산에 (busane) - at Busan

-직진하세요 (jigjinhaseyo) - go straight

-오른쪽으로 가세요 (oleunjjog-eulo gaseyo) - go to the right

-왼쪽으로 가세요 (oenjjog-eulo gaseyo) - go to the left

And then practicing variations of using those sentences:

세븐일레븐은 오른쪽에 있어요 (sebeun-illebeun-eun oleunjjog-e iss-eoyo) - 7-11 is on the right

화장실 뒤에 있어요 (hwajangsil dwie iss-eoyo) - the bathroom is behind)

And a bunch of food:

1. 짜장면 (jjajangmyeon) - Black bean noodles

2. 김치 (kimchi) - Kimchi

3. 소주 (soju) - Soju (Korean alcoholic beverage)

4. 불고기 (bulgogi) - Bulgogi (marinated grilled beef)

5. 김치찌개 (kimchi jjigae) - Kimchi stew

6. 된장찌개 (doenjang jjigae) - Soybean paste stew

7. 닭갈비 (dak galbi) - Spicy stir-fried chicken

8. 김밥 (kimbap) - Kimbap (Korean seaweed rice rolls)

Still figuring out a better way to newsletter, it’s a bit of a mess. A strict transcript is too much as it’s difficult to read but the AI bots are doing a deplorable job of summarizing.

Which song? Bring Sally Up which is based on Moby’s 1996 song “Flower”. Why am I only hearing about this now? Cause I found a David Goggins clips of him doing the challenge… and struggling. Apparently the song has roots in a song sung by slaves:

Green Sally up, Green Sally down, last one squat gotta tear the ground,

If you hate it fold your arms, if you love it clap your hands

Russian class done, working on perfective and imperfective forms of verbs. Good to have this low-level and slow practice because it is what I need.

So, this book, “The Mountain is You” by Brianna Wiest, what is it? All about self-sabotage in all its minuscule forms. Interesting read in that it talks not only about the big ones “I don’t deserve this,” “I can’t do this because…”, to the smaller “this doesn’t feel right” and, simply, re-thinking some of your long-held beliefs.

And again, thinking ahead a year, what will change? What would you want to change?
