Long vid doing well and the comments continue from around the world! What will this week’s vid be? Should I do more “this is my life in China”? But I really don’t want to go too much down that road.
How is automation going? Didn’t get a chance to work on creating that Notion database, but I think it’s a good idea.
Worked on another long video, a collection of video clips from South Korea. Wondering if I should add a narration over it.
No work today because… MFA didn’t work!
Russian class done, a bit rough as I haven’t spoken in a while. Do you review your classes after you finish?

Lunch time run done, slow going, but got it in. 6.45km in 1.03.09, plus all the pull ups, push ups, squats, lunges, and jumps, and duck walks but at half pace.
FYI, TikTok works if you switch your SIM card to the second slot but keep it as your primary number. Just in case you were wondering.
How was today’s Traditional Chinese character class? Used Google Jamboard for writing so I could use my iPad while also viewing the screen on my laptop. Learned 差 which means lacking, like 差不多and cuo 搓 which means to rub in between your fingers or something. It’s been an interesting class so far.

20/2024! Wu Er Ling ainiyou pengyou!
Post-pandemic leave!
Some people coming back, some people leaving, the great foreigner shuffle (within the circle I know) is on the move.
Tried drinking again this weekend and… actually didn’t like it! Edeilweis sent a free four pack with the purchase of my 12 of Heineken Zero. Remember me saying that life would suck if I didn’t have beer or chocolate, well, what I can say is that life doesn’t suck without a beer at the end of the day.
Now, why did I drink before? What were some of the reasons? A feeling of invincibility, and a feeling of “fuck you, I’m so good that I can still get things done.”
But as I’ve started to grow my channels and my projects, etc. I find I’m spending a lot of time not just creating stuff, but now getting that stuff ready to be edited and re-produced by other people so they don’t have to ask me as many questions and so the job can get done quickly and easily.
Will this last? I have no idea. All I know is that every time I look at a beer can I can’t help but think that it would just put me behind in my progress. Whether it’s because it makes my brain fuzzy, disrupts my sleep, or simply doesn’t taste the same as it once did, maybe I’m just getting old and maybe there will be a time to return to it. Maybe that will be this Sunday or weekend? I have no idea, but I gotta get some other things done, that’s for sure.
And Oleksandr Usyk for the win! Undisputed champion of the world! Rematch in October??

Day off tomorrow! Am I tired?
Blue Frog Haoshijie / Hujialou gone! Any other big changes around town? Babies! Does China really need more babies? The country has so many people than even if a fraction of them have children, it’s still sustainable for decades. The US only has a third of the size of population, Canada even less. Europe?
Remembering that Korea only had 4G, not 5G like China… but China needs an assisted connection device to do anything.
Will get to work on the podcasts, Episode 44 ready to be posted, Episode 45 now in the works.
Collecting the travel vids from South Korea and looking to post them as a whole “documentary”. Aim is 90 minutes, but we’ll see.

Back to work, but it’s slow going so looks like I’ll have some time to get some other projects done. How is MYMYM2024 going? It’s not. BUT, in saying that, I have to acknowledge that my original intent was to simply get really good and fast at creating video content. I think I’ve done that.

Back in the Beej!
How was the last day in South Korea?
Sorry for the delay, but I guess I was kind of exhausted.
Early morning train, but then there are more??
Didn’t sleep much anyway because of all the other guests in the hotel room partying it up! Laughing, listening to music-ing, drinking, puking, it was all there! So we made sure to shuffle a bit louder when we got up.
Getting a cab wasn’t too hard, but it was still nerve wracking. Playlist included:
Whitney Houston - I will always love you
Pamala Scott - Paradise
Tom Jones - Keep on running
Wham - A careless whisper
Can’t say any of those songs were really what I was looking for at that moment.
Made it for the 5.20 train, arrived in Seoul around 8.00am. Slept most of the way.
Stowed luggage, only 3000 won (plus 500 because we were 4 minutes late!)
Off to Songnyemun Gate / Namdaemun Gate, apparently built in 1398. A rather quick walk-through.
Then to Namdaemun market, tried some food. No need to buy anything. Was careful not to burn our tongues.
Walk around the neighbourhood, TRIED to get MEGA COFFEE but COULDN’T because they only took digital payments, no cash. Or, at least, there was no effort to take our money. Settled for Starbucks.
To the airport express, but first some Dunkin Donuts to cap off the trip… yeap, I had a lot this week cause Beijing has none.
Run around the airport trying to claim the tax refund… turns out it was already done to the gf’s credit card.
Move around luggage so everything fits and can be checked, can you pack an electric toothbrush in check luggage? YES. Or at least I did. But if you want piece of mind, take it in your carry on.
Rainy and cold when we left Seoul, beautiful and sunny when we arrived in Beijing. Any smell?
And now… jet lagged?

Last full day in South Korea!
Off to lunch with the chinggu, met a couple of his coworkers who had been in the country for 15 and 20 years. Lunch was a Busan specialty.
Walk over to Haeundae. Can’t say it altogether an exciting walk, but it was nice and peaceful. Like, literally walking in slow motion, very nice compared to Beijing! Lots of cafes all over, the further away from Gwanganli the more they seemed to use pre-packaged pastries and the like, which is something I’ve noticed Chinese cafes do, possibly in an effort to keep things fresh over the long spells when no one comes in. But everybody is drinking coffee here, especially iced coffee.
Tried one of those “big takeaway coffee” places, Compose Coffee - Dutch cold brewed - 3,500 won - not bad, rather bitter, cold brewed-style of coffee. They took cash.
Shinsegae department store, duty free, stopped by a body shop and picked up some soaps and stuff. Tax refund… had to go to another building to apply for it. HUGE department stores, just layers and layers of stuff, obscure possibly high-end names and the like. Trevari Fountain replica, faintly recall being here before.
Haeundae Beach! Long stretch of sand, not as many people as I thought there would be, but it is pretty broad, and a bit chilly. Higher end hotels on the one side of the beach, three massive pillars of apartments on the other.
Walked the entire length, dipped our toes in the water, pictures, etc. Big sand castle festival going on.
Walked over 21 kms total.
Stopped at Sam Ryan’s for dinner, fish and chips and wings. It was pretty good, but it was cold outside and they had all the windows open for the restaurant anyway.
Bus back to Gwanganli - it was a popping!
How was yesterday’s episode? All good to hear? Long, I know, but had to get it in.
How was Nampo Dong? Bronx Coffee - saw these two guys in the shop sealing the coffee packets and I thought that was rather hardcore so I went in and got a few bags of coffee.
How’s your back doing? Much better. Maybe it’s cause of all the walking I DON’T do in Beijing!

How much do you reminisce before you just move on?
Early-ish morning run around Gwanganli Beach, nothing really opens until 9 or 10 am so it was very quiet. But Busan seems to be much quieter overall than Beijing, but that may be an unfair assessment, Busan is just much smaller.
HUGE coffee culture here, as that seems to have exploded in the last few years. Randy’s Donuts? Tried that for breakfast oops HUGE donut!
Then baozi and we disappointed the lady cause I ordered three of whatever, turns out that was three boxes! Fixed that mistake with the translation device and she was not very happy. Ooops.
Takeaway: if you get a to-go cup, you must go!
And then… the old neighborhood!
We did A LOT of walking around the old neighbourhood! Goejeong-gu Saha-gu
Gupyong ChoDongHakYo
- Met Warren the current English teacher
- Mr. Joe, current Korean co-teacher
- Seems like the system has changed, Warren works at two schools now
Fried chicken for dinner! I wanted it. Sat and talked with Warren, told me all about life here especially during the pandemic. Asked if he would mind being interviewed for the pcast and he said yes so stay tuned until the end for his words.
Old apartment is still there, old school is still there, old neighborhood still there!
Lots of people saying no pictures!
Padded seats on the subway! Subways and escalators seem to move a little slower here.
Nampo dong PIFF square for the evening, stopped off at Bronx Cafe where the owners were literally grinding and sealing the coffee packets, you know the drip filter for a cup? So I bought a few bags of their coffee. Hope it’s good!
In Warren’s words, life in South Korea. Listen up!

Down to Busan we go!
How was the train? Nice, 2.5 hours from Seoul Station to Busan Station. FRIED CHICKEN on the way down!! Delicious!
Namsan Tower for the morning, crawled up the walkway, then took the cable car back down. A rather noisy place as there were several kindergartens out on a field trip. Add to that the blaring music and it was a touch on the lively side.
Hey, how was your hotel? Small and expensive ($100 per night) and the green fire escape light was on all night, like… it illuminated the whole place. Small and cramped I’d say, about 500 RMB per night, or $100 CAD. It was quiet when the window was shut but in the morning, around 6.30 or so, there would be some alarm that went off that sounded like birds, only that it wasn’t birds. 6.00 am the church bells went off.
Myeongdong Cathedral, first church in South Korea, also hosts a crypt within which are preserved the remains of several beatified martyrs. Something happened in 1835 or so that these people were killed.
My bet is that you could backpack South Korea in three weeks, as in, see everything that would keep you interested.
How do the podcasts sounds? I forgot to add the “mastering” plugin on Monday’s episode.
And then off to dinner with the pengyous from long ago! How are they doing?

Oh yea, forgot to mention… yesterday’s beers were non-alcoholic… even the gf was surprised haha! Cass Lite, Hite Zero and Heineken Zero! Not bad, and a far cry from what I used to drink here. They have rice wine, makoli, but I haven’t had any just yet.
How many cards do you read at a museum?
Don’t blame TikTok or computers, pottery is to blame for our sedentary lifestyle! hahah So says one of the cards at the museum that the invention of pottery contributed to a more sedentary lifestyle for nomads. Took a few thousand years for TikTok to come around.
National Museum of Korea
-big, main floor was ancient history of Korea
-second floor was donated items (bronze helmet from Berlin Olympics in 1936, guy didn’t receive it till 1986. Now it’s in a museum.)
-cafe: can’t have coffee unless you have a seat
-third floor was an international exhibition, India, Japan, China, Greece and Rome.
-学完就忘 - forgot as soon as I finished.
Went to a restaurant tucked away not too far from, had grilled meat with chicken and some sort of onion and then some sort of sushi-roll looking thing but it was made with mostly eggs and carrots, i think. Served with ketchup and mayonnaise. Odd, it was okay, not sure I’d have it again. Found it because it was recommended on Chinese social media. Everybody else in the restaurant was drinking… except us. The group next to us was a young group, spoke some English. Asked why I wasn’t drinking, said I was trying not to any more as much!
Over to Insadong, some shopping street, but it was quite dead. Maybe we didn’t go to the right place.
-Talked to one lady who was just off work as a barista, broken English, has a bf two years younger, from Seoul, says the city is neither great nor terrible.

Annyeonghaseyo! Is that beer can opening? Why yes it is… Hite Zero! Cass Zero and Heineken Zero too!
Back in the So of Ko and tbh, this is the first time I’ve actually travelled through the city.
Rainy and cold-ish, but not overbearing, ie, not so much that we didn’t want to move. As long as we kept moving, we were fine. And if there was no wind.
Gyeongbokgung Palace (景福宫) for the day even as it rained as well as the Korea National Folk Museum. Myeongdong area for the stay, busy busy there as it’s some sort of “festival” going on. Maybe it’s just the night market.
How was getting into South Korea? Easy enough, just took a while to get through passport control. And we had trouble navigating with the APPs because Google Maps wouldn’t show us the Korean and so we had English or Chinese to work with.
I did get a morning jog in before, but it was still difficult to get up. Got up somewhere around 5.30, but didn’t get out of bed until 6.30 or so. Thirty minute job around Myeongdong area.
Overall impressions so far? Grit and grime, poverty is visible, and there are a few memorials around the City Hall area, for the Itaewon Halloween crush that happened as well as a memorial for those who died from the vaccinations, I think.
But the city is popping, lots of tourists and despite all my preparation to speak Korean… A LOT of people speak Chinese!
Tomorrow might be heavier rain so we’ll see if it’s a museum day or if we brave yet another excursion. Namsan Tower possibly on Wednesday before relocating to Busan for a couple of days.

Still MORE internet issues, let’s not dwell.
How was Korean class today? Learned some verbs,

-얼마에요 (olmayeyo) - how much
-부산에 (busane) - at Busan
-직진하세요 (jigjinhaseyo) - go straight
-오른쪽으로 가세요 (oleunjjog-eulo gaseyo) - go to the right
-왼쪽으로 가세요 (oenjjog-eulo gaseyo) - go to the left
And then practicing variations of using those sentences:
세븐일레븐은 오른쪽에 있어요 (sebeun-illebeun-eun oleunjjog-e iss-eoyo) - 7-11 is on the right
화장실 뒤에 있어요 (hwajangsil dwie iss-eoyo) - the bathroom is behind)
And a bunch of food:
1. 짜장면 (jjajangmyeon) - Black bean noodles
2. 김치 (kimchi) - Kimchi
3. 소주 (soju) - Soju (Korean alcoholic beverage)
4. 불고기 (bulgogi) - Bulgogi (marinated grilled beef)
5. 김치찌개 (kimchi jjigae) - Kimchi stew
6. 된장찌개 (doenjang jjigae) - Soybean paste stew
7. 닭갈비 (dak galbi) - Spicy stir-fried chicken
8. 김밥 (kimbap) - Kimbap (Korean seaweed rice rolls)

Why is it okay to put off exercise for a job, but not your business idea? The Steve’s English? How does that sound?
Cherry blossoms are gone. So tough luck if you were thinking of visiting me with a side helping of seeing the spring flowers. Now they’re just trees.
Korea booked! First time in fifteen years! Well, except last year’s stop over. now, how to learn Korean in three weeks?
Russian class done, and where is that newsletter? Spent the evening proof-reading and trying to get ChatGPT to do my job and it didn’t work. Will have that out soon.
Three months from now, what will you have liked to have accomplished?
Did I get a workout in today? Yes, 6.55km in 41.44, plus 15 minutes of slam ball work!
Show notes n tracks up on stevensirski.com, newsletter over at stevensirski.substack.com.

Steven, did you put the wrong date on yesterday’s show? Yes. Oops.
Russian class done, hey why not add some Korean? How is Chinese going?
Lunch time workout: should I just start training one muscle group per day six days a week? Seems to be the thing to do, how would I do that with kettlebells and maces? Or have I chosen the wrong instruments for this tune?
Enjoying the newsletter? I don’t feel a rush to get it out the same day because as I’ve found out, it can take time to transcribe AND then proofread and fix up.
That being said, I see how it can change and modify going forward. Also looking to do the same for my language vlog.
Internet is doing better today, but wow is that ever aggravating. Is it this side or that side that’s doing the meddling?

What would you do if you couldn’t access the internet you need or want for 24 hours? What else would you fill your time with? What’s causing problems this time?
GOLD reversed on Friday late in the trading day, what’s the outlook now? My big disappointment is that I did try to maneuver the market, sold early, and then watched the stocks take off during a seasonal upswing. I won’t let that happen again. Looking at the RSI, double top into the overbought, how will this play out?
Chinese class done! Nanjing vs Beijing: what’s the difference between?
How did you like the newsletter? Worth it?
Lunch time run 6.47km in 42.32, feels alright but shoulder is still bothering me.

Wow! GOLD STILL GOING!
Oh, THAT’S why the assisted connection device isn’t working: Russian guy in town, followed by former leader of a Taiwanese political party.
Tried out some Twitch streaming to see if I like performing live again. Not bad, not sure if it’s something I want to do regularly. The problem with streaming in China, well, see above issues.
Lunch time workout in! Very slow going but still got it done.

Taiwanese class… done! A little bit more difficult to express than I thought it would be. Spent the HOUR chatting about the differences in Chineses.
Working on another longer vid for the language vlog, all about a walk around the neighbourhood.
More automation! Things are coming together!
But what do you mean I have to pay for ChatGPT’s API access? WTF? Shouldn’t this sh.t be free?! Why, yes, you CAN download a free LLM and install it on your computer! gpt4all.io is the place you can download any number of LLMs and install them on your computer… BUT, they’re not as fast the real deal.
Lunch time workouts: not feeling the heavy lifts, thinking it might be time to switch up to lighter weights but just do a bunch of reps, ie a hundred or so.

Catkins! That’s what they’re called! Those little fluffs flying out! Nothing outside today though as it was raining during the lunch time run: 6.56km in 38 min and 15, a very speedy 5’44” pace per km. I’ve been doing hip flexor work lately so that seems to be paying off.
Lots more automation work, so much so that it’s basically occupying my time. What I want to happen:
-auto-transcribe podcasts, including this one
-make lists of content published across all platforms and accounts
-use titles or descriptions published to generate more ideas (ChatGPT)
-compile a big database of publications so I can see where my time is going every day
-gather several podcast transcripts and video descriptions to create a weekly newsletter that is then emailed to me for a look over before being sent.
Currently working on integrating Instagram, though Zapier doesn’t support TikTok just yet.
Russian class done, slowly learning the tenses, though still a bit shy of posting about it.
Taiwanese tomorrow! We’ll see how this goes!

Upgraded Zapier account for more flexibility, also got a month of Descript transcription software. Looking to build out!

New month, new week, new what?
GOLD with the BOOM! Still missing out on this rally. FML Careful chasing this.
Workout in at lunch, 6.48km in 40.02, about a 6 minute per km pace. Rope work, push ups, jumps, pistols after. How are those pull ups? Only got 30-35 done today. Back feels fine, but just want to make sure. Still, doing more than I used to.
Working on automation and application selection: there is a limit to automating stuff. What if an account gets hacked? Passwords change? How much can be automated and how much do we want to be automated? Looking into newsletter providers as I want to automate the weekly minutes from this here audio daily in addition to the video transcripts from my language vlog. Spent four hours working on stuff after work.
STVSKRSKI putting out new tracks, time to mix live? Online of course.
How was Easter? Not too much different here. Not even decorations up at April Gourmet.

Good Friday! And it’s the weekend! Have you confessed your sins yet?
Spent the day on a video for the language vlog, should be up this weekend. Is this what it would be like to be a content creator? Amazing how technology has changed.
Doing some numbers:
-$600 to make five videos, 15 seconds long
-initial consult
-research
-scripting
-editing
Workout in! Lunch time run 6.48km in 1 hour 1 min 16 sec. Weighted vest, but was wary on the pull ups. DID manage to do some both weighted and unweighted in the morning.

SSAB - March 28, 2024
Holy Thursday, this is the last day for Stations of the Cross. I’ve always liked the Church music from Easter.
What happened to Chinese stonks? Falling again? Gold with the surprise move (is it USD-related?). Canadian oil still chugging along.
Did not know Canva could actually publish websites. Just as I’ve been looking to switch my hosting provider, might be time to scale down and make the move.
Pumpkin soup recipe:
-pumpkin
-kale
-broccoli
-tomatos
-beef (just cuz)
-cream (optional)
-ground pepper
-ground cinnamon
-ground clove
-salt
-water
Boil the pumpkin and mash it all up, cook beef in another pan (I did just to be safe), add all together, let simmer for a few minutes till broccoli et al are soft. Can throw in rice if you want or pasta to tamper the flavour a little.
Hearty!

Got a little Xiaomi photo printer, the idea is to keep track of some of my photos a little more. I question how long the photos will last.

How are those pull ups doing? 10 done today. Push ups? None. It’s okay, this doesn’t have to be done right away but it has to be done.

New week! Easter week! What do you do?
Visit to the Beijing Capital Museum… the city has been around a loong time, much longer than the 5,000 years most people talk about.
Working on automation, Make.com vs Zapier.com, which seems to be the best fit?
Haven’t heard anything form Riverside.fm regarding the pcast so I’m going to assume that if it hasn’t been altogether lost, then there’s some problem that has damaged it beyond repair. How many redundancies do I need?!
Workout in! Lunchtime run 6.47km in 37.37, 5.42 avg min/km. Followed by some rope work and plyometrics.

Is it the Spring solstice?
Spent the evening trying to automate! Again! Steve when will you give up?!?! Got some things done and couldn’t do other things.
Tried out Zapier and connected a bunch of APPs to it, Google Sheets, Descript, YouTube, etc. Managed to get YouTube titles etc pulled into a spreadsheet that updates automatically so now I have a record of all of the videos I uploaded to my language vlog.
HOWEVER, how much more automation could I do? Can I automate transcription? Emails? And how much of this would break if I changed something?
And yes, Google does enable you to script all of this without using a third party such as Zaper. But when do you want this done by?
Pull ups NOT done! 72 total as of this recording and owww does the back of my arms and lats hurt!
How did Bring Sally up go? ONLY one minute!
Russian class done after work, followed by a Chinese class at 9.30. Didn’t feel nervous at all before my Chinese class which is probably a first in a very long time. I’m aiming to have this teacher just focus on grammar with me.

Russian class done! Talking about doing pull ups, work outs and… push ups to a song?
Which song? Bring Sally Up which is based on Moby’s 1996 song “Flower”. Why am I only hearing about this now? Cause I found a David Goggins clips of him doing the challenge… and struggling. Apparently the song has roots in a song sung by slaves:
Green Sally up, Green Sally down, last one squat gotta tear the ground,
Old miss Lucy's dead and gone, left me here to weep alone,
If you hate it fold your arms, if you love it clap your hands
Riverside.fm has reached out to see if they can help with the failed podcast. I’m not holding my breath as it looks like the video was just not recorded properly.
Bro, do you even know how to automate? Looking into 3rd party automation software as I’m tired of trying to figure out how to code it. Looking at Zapier but then realizing… shouldn’t there be a way to connect all the Google APPs? I just want a spreadsheet of all the videos I upload. Then do other things.
Chinese classes start again tomorrow but with some different teachers. We’ll see how this goes.
