You Have to Buy In to Sell Out

**NOTE: This episode was recorded prior to the death of George Floyd. Shea and Rebecca did consider pulling the episode, as it does offer critiques to Black artists who have amassed wealth without redistributing it. We want to assure all our listeners that even when we offer critique, we still stand wholeheartedly in solidarity with the Black community, and insist our statements not be used as weapons against the Black Lives Matter movement or the Black community on the whole. Instead, we chose to share this conversation so you could hear the evolution of this conversation, hear the link between white supremacy and capitalism, and hear the need to critique the system over critiquing individual people (which is where we arrive by the end).

In Episode 3, Rebecca and Shea engage in a complicated and emotional conversation about capitalism, white supremacy, and wealth redistribution.

"And you or I or whoever voicing, 'my right to live, my right to. exist, my right to be a person is only valid if it's cosigned by a certain proportion of white people' is the f**king game [of the meritocracy]. I only get to exist if white people permit it, if white people support it, if white people buy into it." ~Shea, on the Lie of the Meritocracy

"If it's not serving everybody, then no one is being served. We all have to get out together." ~Rebecca

Harm in Mental Health

Harm in Mental Health

Rebecca and Shea continue the trend of having difficult conversations through addressing the historical and present harm created via systems of mental health, which are fueled by white supremacy and capitalism. This episode is a solid resource for mental health professionals and food for thought for those navigating the system.

"At the end of the day, if consent still means either you do what I want or you don't get included, it's still research under the supervision of white supremacy." -Shea

Abolitionists not Allies

Abolitionists not Allies

Rebecca and Shea launch into their first episode of their first season by calling out white women who claim to be allies yet attempt to control BIPOC spaces through tone policing and threatening to leave the movement when they encounter a boundary.

“But who gets to play that card, who plays it first, and who plays it the hardest? And also who plays it with a level of threat? Which is, if you don’t meet my comfort and my definition of safety, I will withdraw my support, and in the history of whiteness in this country withdrawing my support also means making you more vulnerable to harm.” - Shea

Who Is Qualified?

Who Is Qualified?

A short-ish conversation, we (Rebecca + Shea) offer listeners a glimpse into our working and relationship dynamic, as well as provide you with an introduction to who we are, what we do, and why you as a white person should Stop Saying Woke.

We are two trauma therapists who realized almost as soon as we met that a) we like each other more than we like many other people, b) we're extremely aligned in almost everything, and c) racism is stupid, and impacts our clients with trauma in very, very specific ways. Veterans of the child welfare system, we're out to slay dragons and protect our clients through providing free education to white helpers who want to do better but don't know how, and probably already call themselves allies when they have no business doing so.

“Equity work is no different. You need somebody that’s gonna walk with you. So when we say do the work, we’re not saying that we expect you to know what it is you need to do, but you have to show up. You have to show up, and then you have to shut up. A lot of white folx like to come into the work and start talking loudly over the people of color.” - Rebecca
