Storytime Hockey - A hockey history podcastMay 13, 2020
S2E1 - The Toronto 228th Battalion (NHA)
The Toronto 228th Battalion were a hockey team in the National Hockey Association. Over their short time in the NHA, they quickly created a collection of ownership disputes, contract and labour issues and wrecked havoc among the military leadership responsible for the Battalion
Episode 10 - The Montreal Wanderers and Joe Malone
On this episode of Storytime Hockey, we dive into one of the other NHL teams that graced the ice in Montreal. Despite being cross town rivals against the Canadiens, the Montreal Wanderers represented the English population of Montreal. Who were they, and how did they end up in the NHL? Most importantly, why did they only play four NHL games before disappearing from the league?
Our player spotlight falls on Joe Malone, a player of a higher quality than we are used to covering, but one that holds a unique hockey story and an even more unique hockey record.

Episode 9 - Dave Dryden and Joel Lundqvist
On this episode of Storytime Hockey we take a look at our favorite Dryden to ever play in the NHL, Dave. This one player was connected to so many different interesting storylines, from rival hockey leagues to emergency back up goaltending to a first for brothers in the league and the invention of modern goalie masks.
Then we take a look at Joel Lundqvist, who played three years in the NHL but has carved out an excellent career in Sweden. We discuss why he returned to Sweden and mention his twin brother a few times.

Episode 8 - Herb Carnegie for Hall of Fame and Tony McKegney
On this episode of Storytime Hockey, I take a look at the playing career of Herb Carnegie, one of the best players of his time, but he never made the NHL because of the colour of his skin. He went on to be one of the most dominant players in Canada, influencing the next generation of hockey players. I discuss his career after hockey and how he continued to influence the world of hockey and make a case for him to be included in the Hockey Hall of Fame. #CarnegieforHHOF
In our player profile we look at the playing career of Tony McKegney, whose entry into professional hockey placed him right in the middle of a racially charged 1970's Birmingham, Alabama.

Episode 7 - Illegal Stick Curves and Dave McLlwain
On this episode of Storytime Hockey, we look at the history of one of the most iconic pieces of hockey equipment and symbols of the sport - the hockey stick. Specifically, we look at the changes that the stick has gone too leading up to the curved blade. How did the curved blade come to be? Who was the first player to play with it? And how has the league tried to put rules in place to manage it, while players try to cheat the system. In our player profile, we look at Dave McLlwain, his amazing junior hockey career and how his 1991-1992 set a record that no one really wants to be a part of.

Episode 6 - Trading the First Overall Draft Pick and Rick Dudley
On this episode of Storytime Hockey, we look at the history of the NHL Entry Draft and how the first overall pick has only been traded three times. Why did teams trade away such a valuable pick, and how did it turn out for them in the long run? In our player profile, we look at Carolina Hurricanes Senior VP of Hockey Operation Rick Dudley, his NHL and NLL playing career and how he might be the most interesting man in hockey, but also, a Batman villain.

Episode 4 - Dave Schultz's Untouchable Record and Walt Tkaczuk
On this episode of @StorytimeHockey , we look at how Dave Schultz was able to set the record for the most penalty minutes in a single season. There's no way a team would allow a player to go out and collect so many penalties on their own. How was it that the Flyers were ok with this, and did it help them win? In the player profile we look at the first German born NHL player Walt Tkaczuk and try to figure out why he turned down a chance to play in one of the biggest hockey stages of all time.

Episode 3 - The Jean Béliveau Powerplay and Mel Hill
In this episode of Storytime Hockey, we look at the early career of Jean Béliveau and how one 44 second stretch of ice time changed the NHL as we know it. We also discuss how much of the change was Béliveau’s fault compared to just the Montreal Canadiens as a whole. In our player profile, we take a look at some of hockey’s best and worst nicknames, and talk about the short but spectacular career of John Melvin Hill.

Episode 1 - Frank Calder and Mike Sillinger
On our first episode, we dive into the life of Frank Calder and how he helped launch the NHL. Who was Frank Calder? Where did he come from? What was he thinking starting a league during the First World War? And why is there a trophy named after him? We also talk about how we remember the man, and does the official memory of the man really match up to his accomplishments?
After that, we jump into the career of Mike Sillinger, the 'suitcase' of the NHL. How does a player with only 548 points hold an NHL record?
