This time on the podcast we've got a golden era - late 90's hip hop mix by Kimani Rogers, who you may know from New York rhyme team Masterminds...or the instrumental outfit Rogue Pharmacist...or the cult favorite indie rock/rap duo Roosevelt Franklin (w/ Mr. Len), or perhaps from his time running the now-defunct Third Earth Records in NYC, which issued many great early records from folks we love like Jean Grae, Oddjobs, Pumpkinhead, Juggaknots and, of course, Masterminds. If you're just tuning in, Masterminds and Rogue Pharmacist were some of the first established artists from outside our city and state that gave us a chance when we we're really just getting our feet wet with the label side of things. This mix was made by Kimani during the first season, as we were experimenting with what kinds of podcast episodes might work. The original drop was served around Valentine’s Day season, and was titled 'Bitches Love Mixtapes', lol. The cover art was styled like a meme from the movie High Fidelity. On this episode of the podcast we've got a mix from ELIT (Amoeba Music / KALX Radio). ELIT is a radio DJ in the Oakland/Berkeley, CA area and also curates the hip hop section of Amoeba Music (Berkeley, CA), ranked one of the top record stores in North America by Rolling Stone magazine. He originally put together this mix for February of Season 1 when we were just figuring out what a podcast really was, and what it could be. Here we are in February of season 5, so we thought it'd be an appropriate time to re-post, five years hence. Enjoy!

Open Flower is a chill, laid back instrumental hip hop tune that flips classical Spanish guitar with early 90's style drums. This will fit right in with fans of Nujabes, Wun Two, Dilla, Subjectjazz, Ol Burger Beats, etc etc.

On this episode were shining the light on a dope indie pop joint called ‘kickin all the pieces of my heart.’ from Nashville, TN artist/singer/songrwiter stef. A bangin voice with heartfelt lyrics, served over crispy minimalist production, with excellent drum programming. stef is definitely an artist to watch in 2021.
