The Mai Tai is a cocktail based on rum, Curaçao liqueur, orgeat syrup, and lime juice, associated with Polynesian-style settings. #20 Whiskey Sour: Egg Safety 101

#20 Whiskey Sour: Egg Safety 101

According to Brian Petro from alcoholprofessor.com, there are some historians that believe the sour category is a scaled down version of the basic punch. It has the elements of “one sour, two sweet, three strong, four weak” that a classic punch has, but in an individual serving size. The proportions are a bit off, but you get the idea. The base spirit is always the dominant flavor. The sugar needs the juice and water or soda to help dissolve the sugar. The citrus should be just present enough to balance out the sweetness of the sugar. Gum syrup (or simple syrup) was later substituted for the sugar and water in some recipes, which is easier to blend into the cocktail. Whiskey Sour Recipe: 1 OUNCES BOURBON 3/4 OUNCE LEMON JUICE 3/4 OUNCE SIMPLE SYRUP ½ OUNCE OR 1 SMALL EGG WHITE (OPTIONAL) Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker, and dry shake. Add ice to the shaker and shake well. Strain into a chilled coupe or cocktail glass, or over ice into a rocks glass. Leave us some feedback, and share with a friend who has egg on their face! #17 Philadelphia Fish House Punch: Baptismal Punch Bowls & America’s 1st Gentleman’s Club

This heady and heavy-handed punch is made for lazy summer afternoons (or—when heated and mulled—lazy, winter weekends), so we’d recommend refraining from following a punch bowl up with any sort of plans, angling or otherwise. An early-known print reference to Fish-House Punch is in “The Cook” (1885): Fish-House Punch There’s a little place just out of town, Where, if you go to lunch, They’ll make you forget your mother-in-law With a drink called Fish-House Punch. #16 Orange Blossom: Famous Deaths & Saving The Bees

This simple “gin and juice” concoction was a hit among the scores of illegal drinkers during the years of Prohibition. While there’s not a lot of history behind the cocktail itself, aside from being named as one of the worst drinks of the decade in 1934 by Esquire magazine (along with the Bronx, the Brandy Alexander and the Clover Club), it has been a part of a number of different historical figures’ lives. #12 Cosmopolitan: SITC, SJP and Other Early 2000s Acronyms

A Cosmopolitan, or informally a “cosmo,” is a cocktail made with citron vodka, triple sec, cranberry juice, and freshly squeezed, or sweetened, lime juice. Although originally created sometime in the 70s or 80s, it wasn’t until the airing of Sex in the City that the Cosmopolitan really launched into pop culture icon status. In the late ’90s and early 2000s, it topped the lists of bars across the country and became synonymous with working women, the budding cocktail revolution, and men ordering cocktails in rocks glasses because they didn’t want to seem too girly. #11 Gimlet: Scurvy Rx & A Hard-Drinking Private Eye

The gimlet (pronounced with a hard ‘g’) is a cocktail typically made of gin, lime juice, and simple syrup. A 1928 description of the drink was: “gin, a spot of lime, and soda”. While originally an English cocktail, as esquire.com points out, the gimlet today has closer connotations to the hard boiled detectives and gangsters of Raymond Chandler novels. In a sense, Chandler’s character, a hard-boiled detective named Marlowe, did for the gimlet what James Bond did for the martini, according to The World’s Best Bartender’s Guide. Gimlet Recipe: 2 OUNCES GIN ¾ OUNCE LIME JUICE 3/4 OUNCE SIMPLE SYRUP GARNISH: LIME WHEEL Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake until chilled. A margarita is a cocktail consisting of tequila, orange liqueur, and lime juice, often served with salt on the rim of the glass. The drink is served shaken with ice (on the rocks), blended with ice (frozen margarita), or without ice (straight up). While you can serve a margarita in a variety of glass types, ranging from cocktail and wine glasses to pint glasses and even large schooners, the drink is traditionally served in the eponymous margarita glass, a stepped-diameter variant of a cocktail glass or champagne coupe. Margarita Recipe: 1 ½ OUNCES BLANCO TEQUILA ¾ OUNCE ORANGE LIQUEUR, PREFERABLY COINTREAU ¾ OUNCE LIME JUICE 1 TEASPOON AGAVE NECTAR GARNISH: LIME WHEEL Prepare a rocks, coupe, or cocktail glass with a salted rim, if desired. #9 Brown Derby: Old Hollywood & Boob-Shaped Buildings

So, here’s a question for you: why would a posh LA restaurant name a popular cocktail after a competitor? At some point in the mid-1930s, the Vendome Club did just that. The Vendome started serving a version of the whiskey sour named after one of its Hollywood neighbors: the Brown Derby restaurant. Their name for the drink—“Brown Derby”—replaced “De Rigueur” in cocktail manuals over time, and is the name we generally encounter today. Brown Derby Recipe: 1 1/2 OUNCES BOURBON 3/4 OUNCE GRAPEFRUIT JUICE 3/4 OUNCE HONEY SYRUP GARNISH: GRAPEFRUIT WHEEL Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake until chilled. The rickey is a highball drink made from gin or bourbon, half of a lime squeezed and dropped in the glass, and carbonated water. Little or no sugar is added to the rickey. Originally created with bourbon in Washington, D.C. at Shoomaker’s bar by bartender George A. Williamson in the 1880s, supposedly in collaboration with Democratic lobbyist Colonel Joe Rickey, it became a worldwide sensation when mixed with gin a decade later. #6: Sidecar: God, Gif & Gill

While the exact origin of the Sidecar cocktail is unclear; it is widely accepted to have been invented around the end of World War I, but, could have come from either London, or Paris. Regardless of location, we choose to believe that it was named after a bum in a bar who was picked up by his badass mother, who drove a motorcycle and dumped her drunk son in her sidecar. Sidecar Recipe: 2 PARTS COGNAC (VS OR VSOP) 1 PART COINTREAU 1 PART LEMON JUICE GARNISH: ORANGE PEEL Coat the rim of a cocktail glass with sugar and set aside (Do this a few minutes ahead of time so the sugar can dry and adhere well to the glass). #2 Manhattan: Spills, Thrills and Bat’s Blood

Unfortunately, we weren’t actually in Manhattan while we explored the Manhattan cocktail, but we were in the same room – maybe one of the last chances we’ll get for a while! As we discuss on this episode, the Manhattan is subject to considerable variation and innovation, and is often a way for the best bartenders to show off their creativity. Traditional views insist that a Manhattan be made with American rye whiskey. However, more often than not, it is made with bourbon or Canadian whisky – we used bourbon in our drinks, along with dry vermouth and a cherry garnish, to create what is called a “half-dry Manhattan.” Listen to learn more! #1 Martini: Romantic Safari Happy Hours, Carrie Nation, Yoohoo Wine

Welcome to the Sundowners Podcast. We’re so excited to launch our very first episode, and to get us started, we tackle the classiest of all beverages: the Martini. Although the origin of the martini isn’t known for sure, there are a few speculations, which we cover after a brief introduction to the podcast. For those who don’t know, a “sundowner” is an African safari tradition, in the most romantic sense, in which, at sundown, a picnic blanket is laid, drinks are poured, and company is shared. As we prepare to send Hailey off to Africa, we decided to launch this podcast as a project to keep us connected while she’s overseas – and what better way than to share a happy hour drink over a video chat? We’d likely already be doing this anyway, so we’ve decided to hit record and see where this podcast takes us.
