The Sun Shak Show

By Sunny Shakhawala

On this podcast, I plan on interviewing people that “make it look easy”. Now, what do I mean by that? We all know someone who is uber successful in one way or another. Maybe they have a thriving business, maybe they are in peak physical shape, or maybe they have the perfect relationship with everyone in their family. The fact is, these things don’t happen by accident. They take years of hard work and dedication. I’m looking to answer the question of how someone gets to where they are.

This Book Will Improve Your Negotiation Skills

This Book Will Improve Your Negotiation Skills

I used to own a quick service restaurant franchise.

We opened our doors to the public in 2014, and unceremoniously shut down the business in 2017.

Although we were only operational for 3 years, I signed a 10 year royalty agreement with the franchisor.

Naturally, a few months after we closed the business, the franchisor sued me for $60,449.91 to recover the royalties they would have collected over the remaining 7 years of my franchise agreement.

SunShakSunday #20: Mamba Mentality: Get Your Affairs in Order

SunShakSunday #20: Mamba Mentality: Get Your Affairs in Order

Regrettably, I’m no stranger to loss. In late 2018, my crew from Penn State lost a member. Not too long before that, my family lost my mom’s oldest brother. The year before that, one of my cousins passed away.

These deaths came unexpectedly. Our world’s turned upside down at a moment’s notice.

Why am I telling you all this?

No one is safe from death. Not the rich, not the famous, not the beautiful, not even the young. We all know death is inevitable. We all accept it as a part of life. How many of us behave accordingly?

SunShakSunday #15: I Don't Drink Alcohol: Here's Why

SunShakSunday #15: I Don't Drink Alcohol: Here's Why

I had my last alcoholic drink on December 28th, 2014. I remember the date because that’s Dia’s birthday. That year, her birthday fell on the Sunday after Christmas. It also happened to be the day my entire extended family came together to celebrate the holiday at my parent's house.

After dinner, Dia and I gathered everyone in the kitchen. We announced our decision to have a destination wedding the following fall. Everyone was so excited.

After the congratulatory hugs, kisses, and handshakes, my dad motioned for us to follow him. He was saving a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue Label for a special occasion and this happened to be it.

I still remember looking down at that glass thinking, "This would make for an excellent last drink..."

It was.

The story doesn’t start or end there. I want to explain what lead me to the decision to stop drinking, how I adjusted to it, and the benefits I’ve enjoyed since.

SunShakSunday #5: Meditating Sucks...

SunShakSunday #5: Meditating Sucks...

Meditation is still near its’ peak in the zeitgeist. A practice once reserved for monks and philosophers has entered the mainstream.

Meditation evangelists include celebrities like Ellen Degeneres & Joe Rogan. Elite athletes, Michael Jordan & Kobe Bryant, also leveraged a mindfulness practice to perform better on the court.

With an array of glowing testimonials from individuals at the top of their respective field, it’s hard to argue the benefits of a meditation practice. So as normal people, we are inclined to try it as well.

Every time you are able to focus on one or two breaths, another distracting thought pops into your head. The experience is ruined. Or is it?

Redefine success. Before I began meditating, I learned a different way to quantify a successful session. Many beginners aim for 10-20 minutes of distraction free focus on their breathing. I aim for something much easier. I aim for “one rep” of the following exercise: acknowledge a distracting thought, accept it, refocus on the breath. If I can complete "one rep" of that cycle in a 10 minute sitting, that session is a success.

The skill I exercise through meditation is regaining control of my focus after distraction occurs. Isn’t that one of the biggest challenges most of us face on a daily basis? How often do you have large chunks of distraction free time to do anything? Countless items grab our precious attention: family, phone, coworkers, etc. Training the ability to regain control of our focus in a distraction filled world pays off.

SunShakSunday #18: Some Light Housekeeping

SunShakSunday #18: Some Light Housekeeping

Dia and I have a housekeeper. She comes every Monday to clean our home and do our laundry while we are at work. It’s the best. thing. ever.

Completing household chores has been a point of contention in our relationship ever since we moved out of my parent’s place. I take full blame. I cannot help but keep score when it comes to completing tasks around the house.

I hate admitting this, but I get frustrated when I hit all of my daily responsibilities for the week, and Dia fails to do laundry or clean the bathroom.

I finally got to a point where I was tired of making my wife feel guilty for not doing her responsibilities. Especially when our social lives and my desire to be with her doing nothing were the main things preventing her from getting her part done.

After seeing the benefits, both tangible and intangible, Dia and I agreed: paying a housekeeper was worth every penny. If we had to tighten up our budget in the future, housekeeping would be one of the last costs we would cut.

At the end of the day, I’m really glad we decided to stick to the decision of outsourcing our housekeeping and laundry. I’m looking forward to bickering with Dia about more things neither of us want to do and ultimately outsourcing them.

Welcome To The Sun Shak Show

Welcome To The Sun Shak Show

In the first episode of the Sun Shak Show, I tell you my intentions behind this podcast.

In my limited experience, I’ve found that the most successful people are eager to share their story. Not so they can brag, but so they can prevent someone else from making the same mistakes they made along the way.

All I’m looking to do is become a better human. I’m going to find people at the top of their respective game and try to dig deeper than what’s on the surface. I’m constantly trying to be a better version of myself. I have so many questions and I know there are people out there that have the answers. So I’m going to find them, and I’m going to share those answers with you.

If you’re wondering what the theme of this show will be, or what topics I’ll be covering, I have to be honest and say I don’t really know for sure. At this particular point in my life, I’m spending the bulk of my free time studying real estate, personal finance, health & fitness, & stoic philosophy. Each one of these topics can be their own podcast series, but, honestly that’s just too much work. I’m going to do the best I can at scratching my own itch. Hopefully, you, the listener, can take away at least one thing from each episode to live a better life.

So I’m going to end the first episode here with a quote.

This is a quote by Michael Jackson. Who, at the time of this recording, isn’t very well regarded in mainstream media, but the quote applies well nonetheless. Here it is:

“A lot of people are just so used to seeing the outcome of work. They never see the side of the work you go through to produce the outcome.”

So, let that sink in. And I’ll talk to you & my first guest in the next episode. Until next time.
