Sustainable Productivity

Sustainable Productivity

By Susan Sanders, MS, MBA, PMP

Life is about living wide, not just long. We are more than our to do lists, yet we often get bogged down in tasks, chores, and errands. Exhausted at the end of the day, we numb out of the life we claim to love, and can’t figure out why we feel burned out. I want to help you create a life you don’t need to escape. Using research-based habit change strategies, we will tackle the three dimensions of Sustainable Productivity: Health and Fitness, Mental Well-being, and Environmental Surroundings. By making small adjustments in these areas, you can create and maintain a life you want to engage with.

Get Still to Get Going

Get Still to Get Going

Meditation is a burnout balm - a way to get still to get going. We often hear messages of rise and grind, get up and get after it, be a goal getter.  But I want to suggest an easier, softer way of learning to be in the world. Because you can learn a new way. Well being can be learned. It is not something you have or don’t. You can cultivate it different ways and the path we often do not choose is stillness.  Here is what you can expect to hear on the episode: What the research says about meditation and burnout prevention / recovery Meditation to soothe mental, emotional, and physical pain A mindfulness meditation to overcome procrastination Full show notes can be found at this link. Sustainable Sue Reviews the Competition

Sustainable Sue Reviews the Competition

Books are at the core of what makes Sustainable Sue who she is. Averaging 200 books per year provides a great opportunity to explore all kinds of genres, but titles in the productivity genre are a particular favorite - mostly because that is where her book will be shelved. Someday. This is not a book launch announcement. Of all of the productivity books that Susan consumed (reads, underlines, highlights, flags pages, saves the whole reference section, connects with the authors, etc), a few titles stuck out that are reviewed in this episode. Three specific titles will be reviewed, along with a couple highlights from each book and a discussion of how they relate to the ideas of Sustainable Productivity. Here is what you can expect to hear on the episode: One title that is an oldie, but goodie A second title published in the middle of the pandemic A sneak peek of a new productivity book that will be published at the end of December Full show notes can be found at this link. Stress Resilience = Immunity Shield

Stress Resilience = Immunity Shield

You cannot remove all stress from your life. Nor can you manage stress - that is like pinning jello to a tree. But you can change how you respond to stress - this is stress resilience. Since there is no right or wrong way to approach stress resilience, each person can have a unique way of designing a life that increases stress resilience. Don't accept that voice in your head that says you don't have time for one more thing. Imposter Syndrome and the Importance of Small Deaths

Imposter Syndrome and the Importance of Small Deaths

Let's dig a little deeper today - imposter syndrome and the importance of small deaths. You know, the light stuff life is made of. For me imposter syndrome shows up as that voice in my head that says, “Who do you think you are?” Or “Why do you think you are the right person for this?” Sometimes it is condescending, “Stay in your lane, honey. Let the real writers/podcasters/creators do this.” Susan explores the idea that imposter syndrome is feeding some fear that is keeping her stuck. Let's shine a spotlight onto these imposter syndrome feelings - it might show us that this monster behind the curtain is really a tiny, shriveled nothing just trying to act tough. The SMART Way to Tackle Digital Clutter

The SMART Way to Tackle Digital Clutter

Digital clutter impacts our health and wellness as much as physical clutter. It IS part of our environmental surroundings. Digital clutter covers communication like emails, texts, DMs, and voicemails (for those of us who are dinosaurs that still leave and accept VMs), social media including Snaps, likes and saved ideas from Facebook, Instagram or TikTok; photos on your phone, on your computer or in the cloud (not to mention what has been sent to you in shared files, texts, emails and DMs). Then there are all of the digital files and folders. I have been trying various tips and tricks for a couple years to try to dial into what will be sustainably productive for me to finally get on top of this digital clutter. I think I have a system and that is what I want to share with you. What habits and actions I do each week to manage the digital clutter. Sustainable Self-Soothing and Productive Self-Care

Sustainable Self-Soothing and Productive Self-Care

When does self-care become self-soothing? The phrase “self-care” seems to have morphed into a catch phrase and punch line these days. Is a glass (or bottle) of wine after a tough day really self-care? Are you really taking good care of your colleagues by bringing a couple dozen donuts to the office? Part of making the distinction between self-soothing and self-care is that self-care allows you space to be uncomfortable. Sustainable Sue Talks Time Management

Sustainable Sue Talks Time Management

Does it seem to you like some people are just better at time management? Why is it some people seem to be able to accomplish so much more than others? Why do some days feel like you really nailed it and some days feel like time just got away from you? Spoiler alert! It is not really about time. Time is a fixed entity each day - we all have 168 hours in a week. How you approach time and the systems you set up around that times is what matters. This means that you need to decide what are the most important things in your day first and fill in the other tasks and activities around it or deflect them to another day, time or person. This episode will help you do that. 10 Tips for Conquering Clutter

10 Tips for Conquering Clutter

When we talk about physical clutter we are talking about two kinds – paper and objects. Paper and objects both come into your life for different reasons and hold different meaning. These are the stacks of papers that don’t ever seem to be filed or the influx of children’s artwork that you can’t stand to throw away, but also can’t stand to have stacked on the dining room table. This is the lack of systems that make you miss paying a bill. These are the gifts that you received / inherited that you did not like but feel the need to keep. We are talking about the paper and objects that make you feel weighed down when you see them. This is what we mean when we refer to clutter. Here is what you can expect in this episode: How many hours you lose to lost things and what it means for your physical health and wallet. Managing Media with an Eye Toward Sustainability

Managing Media with an Eye Toward Sustainability

This week's focus is the impact of media on your personal productivity. Media is a component of the Environmental Surroundings dimension along with clutter. Basically all the inputs that are physically and virtually in your environment - news, movies, books, TV, podcasts, social media, and magazines that you take in on a daily basis.  Learn from  Jose Ortega y Gassett: “Tell me to what you pay attention and I will tell you who you are.” Ignoring media altogether is not sustainable - there are productivity gains to be had from its consumption. But you need to understand what is coming in and what it is doing to your productivity in the long run. Here is what you can expect in this episode: Learn what science shows is the impact of media in your body at a cellular level. Rest is so important that it is a component of all three dimensions of Sustainable Productivity. In this episode Susan highlights the work from Dr Saundra Dalton-Smith in her book Sacred Rest and expands it to apply to Health and Fitness, Mental Well-being, and Environmental Surroundings. Let's be clear: rest is not sleep. Rest is an active or passive activity you participate in so you can recharge and restore. Consider this quote by an anonymous source: "When I am resting because my body is weak, I need to remember that I'm not wasting the day doing nothing. I am doing exactly what I need to do. I'm recovering." Think of rest as more of a “timeout,” rather than a “go home.” Here is what you can expect in today's episode: Why rest is a component of each of the Sustainable Productivity dimensions. Signs and symptoms of a rest deficit. Suggestions for adjustments to improve rest in all aspects of life. Full show notes can be found at this link.
