SwimTalk A2B - Episode 35: "Swimming Saved Me" - Former Age Grouper Lawrence Romine, now an IRONMAN
In the mid-1980s we coached an age group team in west Houston, Western Horizon Aquatic Team ("WHAT"), in a then-small town called Katy. One of our "tweens" was a skinny little towhead named Lawrence "L.D." Romine. He was talented and worked hard and then, like the Clampetts, packed up and moved to Californy and that was the last we heard of him. Until January of 2022, when we got an email that knocked our Hokas off. Listen to our chat with Lawrence as he explains what happened in the intervening years, from hearing for the first time from him that he HATED swimming, to an adventure in the Navy that helped launch him on a career in electronics, and then what turned him back on to swimming. His reflections border on an epiphany and his ability to draw on lessons we tried to instill in him and every other kid we have coached over the years. It was gratifying to hear his comments and memories, and it was a lot of fun. Give a listen!

SwimTalk A2B - Episode 32: Kutztown (PA) D2 Men's Swimming REINSTATED-A Conversation with Golden Bears Head Coach Tim Flannery
In 2009, after almost 40 years of being a sport at Kutztown University, the AD met with head coach Tim Flannery to bluntly tell him the men's program was being cut, effective immediately. The "reason" was based on "[the] current economic situation" and as the result of an outside "funding study" on the intercollegiate athletic program, the then-director of athletics and the then-VP of Student Services and Campus Life recommended to the university president discontinuing the sports of men’s swimming and men’s soccer because cutting those sports presented "the right combination of financial savings, Title IX proportionality, and impact on the overall athletic program." No one should overlook the mention of "Title IX proportionality". It's ALL about Title IX, and "finances" and other cited reasons are just convenient and useful camouflage.
A change in school administration that saw the exit of all three university positions mentioned above in 2020, 2011, and 2014, respectively, saw the arrival of a new president (Dr. Kenneth Hawkinson) that fully supported athletics and an AD (Renee Hellert) that did her own number and data-crunching to examine the impact of dropping/restoring men's swimming. To that we say, HOORAY! Listen to Coach Flannery as he shares the inside story!

Swim Talk A2B - Season 3 Episode 28 - The Varsity Cup!
Athletes get many kudos in life.
The spotlight is on them from an early age. Some excel through high school. Some go on to star in college. A few make it to the pros.
But, there are many facets to being an athlete.
A Texas newspaper, The Victoria Advocate (www.victoriaadvocate.com), wanted to highlight student athletes, and for the 2018-2019 school year created an event and program called the Varsity Cup. The city of Victoria is located on the coastal plains of Texas about 50 mi from the Gulf of Mexico and is a two-hour drive from Corpus Christi, Houston, San Antonio, and Austin, and therefore known as the Crossroads area of Texas.
The Varsity Cup was designed to honor the best student athletes in the Crossroads. These kids excel not only at sports but also must maintain a 3.0 GPA and excel in volunteerism and extracurricular activities.
The initial crop of nominees were outstanding student athletes – smart, bright, and eager to serve their communities.
They helped rebuild their communities after Hurricane Harvey, fed the homeless, counseled youth groups, mentored elementary students, served Thanksgiving meals, worked at women’s crisis centers and helped the elderly. They were active in their churches and did many other non-athletic school activities, such as National Honor Society and 4-H.
Their list of accomplishments was mind-boggling.
For the first Varsity Cup, about 600 students and parents attended the awards event.
The principal sponsor of the Varsity Cup is American Shield Roofing and Construction (https://americanshieldroofing.com/) and on this episode of SwimTalk A2B, we interview Jon Lamson, VP of Sales for American Home Shield.

Swim Talk A2B, Episode XXVII - Patrick Henry, Part Deux
In this conclusion to a fun and wide-ranging visit with Pat, we hear about how to take the reins of an interim coaching position without disrupting the flow and general scheme of things while still elevating and enhancing the program until the new coach arrives. We also venture into an enjoyable discussion of general coaching philosophies, focusing on the really important non-technical aspects of coaching and teaching, considering more extensively the consideration and critical value of teaching life lessons, and top it off with why we need to treat our jobs as a PROFESSION, and acting and presenting ourselves likewise.
