#30 - Can we lower nitrogen emissions without decreasing performance in growing pigs? - Dalton Humphrey

Nitrogen and ammonia emissions are a constant concern for animal sustainability as we increase the amount of pork produced around the world. However decreasing nitrogen emissions is often done by reducing the amount of crude protein fed, which can decrease performance. In this episode, Dalton Humphrey and I talk about his study providing benzoic acid to growing pigs to see how effective it is at decreasing emissions without hindering average daily gain.

Dalton Humphrey is a Ph.D. student at Iowa State University with Dr. Laura Greiner studying swine nutrition. His dissertation work focuses on the branched-chain amino acid requirements of nursery pigs and lactating sows. Dalton graduated with his M.S. in Animal Science in 2021 under the mentorship of Dr. Greiner, where his research investigated the impacts of diet on the nutrient excretion and gas emissions of grow-finish pigs.

#29 - Hybrid rye in swine diets - the pros and cons - Caitlyn Sullivan

With fluctuations in pig diet ingredient costs, it is always prudent to have alternative feed ingredients priced and changes in gain and feed intake estimated in the event of a significant price increase of typical ingredients such as corn or soybean meal. In this episode, Caitlyn Sullivan and I discuss her trial of replacing increasing levels of corn with hybrid rye to see how it affects average daily gain, average daily feed intake, and gain-to-feed ratios for finisher pigs.

Caitlyn Sullivan is pursuing an M.S. in Monogastric Nutrition at South Dakota State University under the supervision of Dr. Bob Thaler. Before attending South Dakota State, she received her B.S. in Animal Science with a Minor in Plant Science from the University of Missouri. Her thesis supports National Pork Boardโ€™s sustainability efforts, specifically with hybrid rye and its effects on growth performance, carcass characteristics, agronomic sustainability, and milling efficiency.

#28 - Effectiveness of different nutritional strategies for low-health pigs - Kayla Miller

Several studies have shown that feeding increased lysine soon after a health challenge can improve performance and help mitigate the negative effects associated with the infection, but how long after infection will those high lysine diets still be effective? In this episode, I talk with Kayla Miller about 2 studies she performed testing different nutritional strategies for poor health pigs, including a delayed feeding of a high lysine diet to PRRSV infected pigs.

Kayla Miller is a Swine Nutrition Ph.D. student at Iowa State University. She received her B.S. in Animal Sciences in 2020 and her M.S. in Swine Nutrition at Iowa State in 2022. She has gained industry experience by interning at both Smithfield and AMVC and has done a number of research projects at Iowa State.

#27 - Benefits from better understanding BCAA transporters in the pig's body - Dr. Woongbi Kwon

Several new research studies have demonstrated the mechanisms behind branched-chain amino acid transporters and nutrient utilization in pigs. Better understanding this concept can be crucial in some diets due to the high leucine content of dried distillers grains. In this episode, I talk with Dr. Woongbi Kwon about his study delving deeper into this topic, feeding elevated levels of leucine and tryptophan to study the effects on growth performance and serotonin metabolism.

Dr. Woongbi Kwon grew up on his familyโ€™s swine farm in South Korea where he attended Konkuk University to receive his B.S. and M.S. in Animal Sciences. He then transferred to the University of Illinois and worked under the guidance of Dr. Hans Stein to earn his Ph.D. in Swine Nutrition under Dr. Hans Stein in 2020. His research focused on branched chain amino acid metabolism and interaction in pigs. He now works as a swine nutritionist for Furst-McNess.

#26 - What parameters have the biggest impact on pigs through the nursery period? - Dr. Mark Knauer

When it comes to different pig preweaning parameters, which ones are the most important? That is a question that has had a variety of answers over the years, and hopefully after this study we can better understand exactly how large of an effect each parameter has. In this episode, I talk with Dr. Mark Knauer about his study with over 3,000 pigs that used linear modeling to measure how much of the piglet variation was explained by a variety of different preweaning parameters.

Dr. Mark Knauer was born and raised on a pure-line pig and cattle operation in southern Wisconsin. He received his B.S. in Agriculture Education and M.S. in Animal Breeding at Iowa State University. Following his time at ISU, Dr. Knauer completed his Ph.D. in Animal Breeding and Genetics at North Carolina State University. After graduating, he completed a short Postdoc at the Institute for Pig Genetics in the Netherlands before accepting a position with the National Pork Board as the Director of Animal Science. Dr. Knauer is currently a Swine Extension Specialist at North Carolina State University where he focuses on genetics and production management.

#25 - Swine diet vitamin averages across the U.S. industry - Dr. Jamil Faccin

Vitamins can sometimes be overlooked due to their cheap and easy inclusion in swine diets. With stabilization issues under certain conditions, we tend to put more in the diet than is required, but how much extra is everyone adding? In this episode with Dr. Jami Faccin, we talk about his survey of many large swine facilities in the United States and how he compared their vitamin inclusion levels to see what the averages may tell us.

Dr. Jamil Faccin graduated in Veterinary Medicine from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil. He worked with the biggest swine production company in Brazil for 4 years before returning to the same University in Brazil to receive his M.S. and Ph.D., including a visiting period with the Applied Swine Nutrition team at Kansas State University. His research focused on management and nutrition strategies in the nursery and finishing period. Currently, he is a Post-doctoral researcher at K-State, leading and being involved in a wide variety of projects in applied swine nutrition.

#22 - Modeling amino acid requirements in the gestating sow - Christian Ramirez

We continue to adjust amino acid requirements to meet best the needs of pigs for growth or protein synthesis. Multiple studies have shown that AA intakes above current requirements improve various body functions. That is the focus of Christian Ramirezโ€™s work, and he and I talk about it in this episode to discuss how the performance of a gestating sow could improve with additional nutrients.

Christian Ramirez is a Ph.D. student at South Dakota State University. He received his M.S. in Animal Science in 2019 and then an M.S. in Data Science in 2020, both from SDSU. His work combines different statistical models to best model amino acid requirements in sows to fit their nutritional requirements better.

#21 - A review of lysine recommendations in gestating gilts - Dr. Chantal Farmer

As we continue to genetically select for sows to produce more pigs, it is important that we ensure they are getting adequate milk from the sow, but there may be more ways to help this other than maximizing feed intake during lactation. In this episode, I talk with Dr. Chantal Farmer about her recent study on increasing lysine in the gestation period to further increase mammary development in gestating gilts and hopefully consequently increase the milk yield capacity during lactation.

Dr. Farmer is a research scientist in sow lactation biology working at the Sherbrooke Research and Development Centre of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. She obtained her B.Sc. from McGill University (1980), her M.Sc. from the University of Saskatchewan (1982), and her Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University (1986). Dr. Farmerโ€™s research goal is to increase sow milk yield, hence piglet growth. She was a pioneer in studying mammary development in gilts and sows and identifying factors affecting it. She has published over 150 scientific manuscripts, 7 book chapters, and is the sole editor of a recently published book entitled โ€œThe gestating and lactating sowโ€ that was also translated and published in Chinese.

#20 - Alpha-linolenic acid in nursery pigs: can it help with disease challenges? - Jenna Bromm

PRRSV and E. coli continue to remain a problem for farms everywhere, and nursery pigs, with their often underdeveloped immune systems, can take a major toll if infected. In this episode, I talk with Jenna Bromm about her work at Kansas State University studying the effects of alpha-linolenic acid supplementation in nursery pigs infected with PRRSV or E. coli to see if it can help alleviate the reduced growth typically seen in affected pigs. ย

Meet the guest:

Jenna Bromm is a master's student at Kansas State University on the swine nutrition team studying under Dr. Mike Tokach. She first joined the swine nutrition team as an undergraduate student while receiving her B.S. from KSU and enjoyed it so much that she decided to stick around to work towards earning an M.S. Her work primarily revolves around the use of alpha-linolenic acid in nursery pigs.

#19 - Stocking density - how small is too small and what we can do to offset the reduced performance? - Chloe Hagen

Past studies have shown that increasing stocking density will decrease the performance of the pigs. However, when commercial systems are backed-up due to logistic issues or disruptions in the supply chain, barns may be stocked at a lower floor space allowance to avoid bottlenecks. In this episode, Chloe Hagen returns to talk with me about her study where she increased stocking density while also increasing energy level to see if it can help mitigate the reduction in performance historically seen with overcrowding.

Weโ€™re back with a second episode with Chloe Hagen! Chloe is a Ph.D. student at Iowa State University. She received her both B.S. and M.S. from ISU in 2020 and 2022 respectively. She was also a nutrition intern for Christensen Farms back in 2019 and is currently doing an internship as a swine nutrition intern for Cargill. Her M.S. thesis focused on the effects of floor space and lysine restricted diets on the growth rate of finishing pigs and compensatory gain analysis.

#18 - Decreasing piglet mortality - can extra zinc help? - Kelsey Hammers

Piglet mortality continues to be an issue for the swine industry and is one of the worst sources of economic losses in production facilities. Several studies have tried to identify new ways to decrease mortality to save producers money. In this episode, I talk with Kelsey Hammers about her study feeding zinc to sows at different timepoints during gestation to see how it affects piglet mortality. Take a few minutes out of your day to hear the results!

Kelsey Hammers is a Ph.D. student at the University of Minnesota. #17 - Compensatory gain following nutrient restriction - how well can pigs recover? - Chloe Hagen

Covid caused a lot of issues in the swine industry that we were unprepared for especially in regard to meat packing plants shutting down for periods of time leaving farmers with no one to sell their pigs at market weight. Hopefully something like this will never happen again, but if it does it is important we are prepared and have a plan in place. In this episode I talked with Chloe Hagen about her study where she fed nutrient restricted diets to grow-finish pigs to measure how it affected time to market as well as the potential of compensatory gain following the nutrient restricted period.

Chloe Hagen is a Ph.D. student at Iowa State University.

#16 - Lysine recommendations for grow-finish pigs - maybe we aren't feeding enough - Rafe Royall

Nutrient recommendations constantly need to be reviewed and updated as genetics change over the years. Lysine, being one of the most critical nutrients pigs receive, definitely deserves some special attention. In this episode, Rafe Royall and I talk about his study identifying the optimal lysine level for grow-finish pigs to maximize growth and maximize income over feed cost for certain genetic lines. It only takes a few minutes to see how you may need to feed more or less lysine to your pigs!

Rafe Royall, growing up in the show pig industry, coupled with a background in livestock judging, and involvement in research as an undergraduate led Rafe to pursue graduate studies in swine nutrition. He received his Bachelorโ€™s degree in Animal Science with a minor in Chemistry from Texas Tech University in 2020, as well as a Masterโ€™s degree in Animal Science from Kansas State University in 2022. His Masterโ€™s research focused on determining Lysine requirements for certain swine genetic lines throughout the growing and finishing phases to develop prediction equations to maximize growth and profitability. He is currently continuing his education at Kansas State University to receive his Ph.D.

#15 - What grains in swine feed may be providing more energy than we predict? - Dr. Ruurd Zijlstra

Accurately defining our nutrient loadings when formulating diets is essential for nutritionists. If we are not accounting for enough enough energy from hindgut fermentation, we may be over feeding energy during certain stages of production. In this episode with Dr. Ruurd Zijlstra, we discuss a study he conducted measuring the digestible and fermentable fractions of certain grains to hopefully more accurately predict the net energy of these feedstuffs. Take a few minutes and give this a quick listen!

Dr. Ruurd Zijlstra is Professor at the Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science at University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. He was born and raised in The Netherlands where he completed a M.Sc.-degree at Wageningen University. In 1996, he completed a Ph.D. at the University of Illinois and was first for 8 years at Prairie Swine Centre in Saskatoon, Canada as Research Scientist โ€“ Nutrition. He has produced 161 scientific papers and 12 book chapters on nutrition topics. His current research program is focused on unique aspects of starch and fiber nutrition, nutritional quality of co-products in pigs, and feed quality evaluation techniques. He received the 2018 Nonruminant Nutrition Award of the American Society of Animal Science โ€“ American Feed Industry Association.

#14 - Targeting specific digestion kinetics to optimize nursery pig performance and health - Dr. Neil Jaworski

Zinc oxide is a wonderful tool for nursery pigs. However, there have been concerns about the environmental impact ZnO can have. Several research studies have been performed to identify potential alternatives to ZnO that are more environmentally friendly. In this episode I talk with Dr. Neil Jaworksi as we discuss a trial that he performed at Trouw Nutrition that may provide a viable alternative to ZnO by targeting desirable protein and fiber digestibility rates. Tune in for 10 minutes to listen to these results!

Dr. Neil Jaworski received his B.S. in animal sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He continued his graduate studies at U of I, completing his Master's degree in December 2012 and Ph. D. in 2016. His research involved experiments investigating energy metabolism, enzymes, direct-fed microbials, digestion/fermentation adaptation time, and degradation of fiber fractions along the gastrointestinal tract of the pig. Upon graduation, Dr. Jaworski moved to the Netherlands and began working as a researcher at Trouw Nutrition. Currently, his position is Global Nutritionist Database & Matrix where he works with a team to develop the Global Trouw Nutrition Database and ingredient Matrix and is the gatekeeper for nutritional concepts in mixed products, from premixes to feed.

#13 - What other options are out there to reduce the prevalence of E. coli in the nursery? - Dr. Tsungcheng Tsai

Since 2019 some farms have been struggling with E.coli infections in nursery pigs that have been fairly resistant to antibiotic treatment. This has led some people, like our guest today, to look into alternative options for treatment and prevention. In this episode, I talk with Dr. Tsungcheng Tsai about his lab group studying the effects of lactylate and Bacillus subtilis on pig performance while measuring the effects on gut microbiome E. coli prevalence. Listen to find out the results!

Dr. Tsungcheng Tsai has been a program associate for the University of Arkansas since he graduated with his Ph.D. in Animal Sciences from the University of Georgia in 2010. Tsaiโ€™s interests and expertise have helped researchers within his department to develop assays to further investigate mechanisms that might be involved in the enhancement of swine growth performance, as well as establishing a peripheral blood mono-nucleus cell isolation technique in swine that helped examine immunological differences in various swine. Since 2017, Tsai has co-authored 15 articles published in peer reviewed journals and presented more than 30 abstracts of paper at regional meetings between 2015 and 2019, helping gain visibility for programs within the Animal Science Department.

#12 - Can essential fatty acid supplementation during lactation increase piglet average daily gain? - Dr. Julia Holen

#12 - Can essential fatty acid supplementation during lactation increase piglet average daily gain? - Dr. Julia Holen

During lactation the sow prioritizes her litter and will mobilize nutrients from her own body to adequately provide nutrients to her litter if she doesn't receive the proper amount of nutrients in her diet. That is why it is critical for nutritionists to formulate a diet to minimize weight loss in the sow while maximizing weight gain in the litter. In this episode, I talk with Dr. Julia Holen about her work at KSU where she studied the effects of feeding elevated levels of essential fatty acids to sows and how that affected reproductive and litter performance. Tune into this short 9-minute podcast to hear the results!

Dr. Julia Holen is a recent Ph.D. graduate from Kansas State University. Before KSU, she received both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of Minnesota. During her time at the University of Minnesota, her research focused on the impacts of dietary zinc in late gestation sow diets on pre-weaning mortality and the digestibility of supplemental zinc sources in sow gestation and lactation diets. However, for her Ph.D. at KSU, her research focused on the effects of essential fatty acids on piglet survival and sow reproductive performance and the influence of branched-chain amino acids on lactating sow performance, which she shares with us in this episode. After graduating, Julia recently began working with Swine Vet Center in Saint Peter, Minnesota.

#11 - High oil vs. conventional corn: Which energy source is more economical for pigs? - Dr. Charmaine Espinosa

When it comes to identifying alternative feed ingredients there are many factors to consider beyond the base price. What is its nutritional value? How will it impact inclusion levels of other ingredients? Could it cause logistical complications? In this episode, I talk with Dr. Charmaine Espinosa about her study on the digestibility and nutritional value of high oil corn and the possibility to using it as an alternative to conventional corn. Could this be a viable way to implement a more nutrient dense diet? Listen to this short episode to learn more!

Charmaine Espinosa graduated from the University of the Philippines Los Baรฑos in 2012 where she majored in Animal Science with Animal Nutrition as her specialization. She had taken basic nutrition courses and conducted experiments on โ€œThe effects of Moringa oleifera as supplemental feed for gestating-lactating sowsโ€ which served as her undergraduate thesis. At the same university, she obtained her Masterโ€™s degree in Animal Sciences majoring in Animal Nutrition with a minor in Biochemistry in 2015. During her Masterโ€™s program, she was able to conduct research about โ€œThe effect of supplementing ฮฑ-galactosidase on the energy value of soybean meal and production performance of nursery pigsโ€ through the supervision of Dr. Rommel C. Sulabo. Upon completion of her Masterโ€™s degree, Charmaine came to the University of Illinois to start her doctorate studies where she had the opportunity to conduct research about gut health, characterization of nutrients, nutrient digestibility, and effects on growth performance of different feed ingredients and additives fed to animals. In May 2019, she earned her Ph.D. with her dissertation focused on evaluating the nutritional value of copper hydroxychloride fed to pigs. In September 2019, Charmaine returned to Stein Monogastric Nutrition Laboratory as a postdoctoral research fellow.

#09 - Truck cab decontamination - what's the most effective way to kill PEDV and PRRSV? - Dr. Grace Elijah

PRRSV and PEDV continue to be a major problem for swine producers as they pose a major risk to both the pigsโ€™ welfare and the economical status of the farm. One potential risk of infection is through feed trucks that have recently delivered feed to another farm that is positive for PRRSV or PEDV. In This episode I talk with Dr. Grace Elijah about her study testing different decontamination methods of truck cabs to determine which method works best and which surface harbors the most bacteria. The results were not would I would have guessed, and I think you'll feel the same way.

Dr. Grace Elijah is a PhD student at Kansas State University studying disease transmission in swine through feed supply chain and also studying the prevalence of Atypical Porcine Pestivirus in US swine production. Before beginning her PhD, she received her DVM from Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2020.

Weaning is arguably the most important transition in a pigs life, and is associated with poor growth, increased incidence of infection, and increased stress. Due to this, researchers are continuously looking for potential ways to modify the pigโ€™s diet to increase gut health and immunity. In this episode, Dr. Katie Summers shares some of her work with the USDA, in which they identified and isolated a fungus from the pigโ€™s gut, Kazachstania slooffiae, which may prove beneficial as a feed additive for producers worldwide.

Dr. Katie Summers is a Research Microbiologist at the USDA in Beltsville, MD. She earned her Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Michigan followed by postdoctoral fellowships at Yale University (Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology) and the University of Michigan Medical School (Infectious Disease) prior to visiting positions at the University of Kansas (Molecular Biosciences) and Miami of Ohio (Microbiology). Since 2017, Dr. Summers has worked at the Animal Biosciences and Biotechnology Laboratory (ABBL) at the USDA where her research is focused on understanding the role of the microbiome and metabolome in piglet growth during the critical weaning transition.

#05 - How well are you balancing your branched chain amino acids in the pigs' diet? - Bo Williams

#05 - How well are you balancing your branched chain amino acids in the pigs' diet? - Bo Williams

The NRC has recommended amino acid requirements that help us balance our diets accordingly, but we must also pay attention to not only which nutrients are deficient, but also which nutrients are in excess. In today's talk with Clayton Chastain, Bo Williams discusses his study where he increased the amount of other branched chain amino acids fed to pigs when there was excess leucine in the diet to try and ameliorate the negative growth effects that excess leucine has on the pig.

Hadley Williams is a PhD student at Kansas State University studying under Dr. Mike Tokach. He received both his Bachelor's and Masterโ€™s degrees from Iowa State University before continuing his studies at KSU. While at KSU he is working on validating a model on branched chain amino acids on finishing pig growth performance.

#04 - Intestinal health biomarkers - the crystal ball of a pigsโ€™ growth efficiency - Dr. Sung Woo Kim

The microbiome of pigs has been an area of study that has gained popularity over the last several decades. Intestinal health and gut inflammation are problems that we sometimes see in the industry. In todayโ€™s talk with Clayton Chastain, Dr. Sung Woo Kim shares his research over the last several years highlighting his work with intestinal health biomarkers and how these biomarkers might help identify problems with a pigโ€™s intestinal health so that we may be able to find a solution.

Since graduating with a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1999, Dr. Sung Woo Kim has developed a world-class and productive research program in monogastric nutrition. The results of his outstanding research have significantly advanced our knowledge about intestinal health and amino acid nutrition, and functional nutrients in monogastric animals. Dr. Kim is currently a Professor of Nutrition at North Carolina State University. Together with his graduate students, visiting scholars, and collaborators, he has published over 212 peer-reviewed papers, 24 book chapters, 73 papers in conference proceedings, 17 popular articles, 16 presented in mass media, 264 abstracts, and given 230 invited talks in 23 countries. In recognition of his seminal contributions to swine nutrition, Dr. Kim has received AFIA Award in Nonruminant Nutrition Research, Early Career Achievement Award, and Outstanding Young Scientist Award from the American Society of Animal Science; The Vernon Young International Award for Amino Acid Research from the American Society of Nutrition; and Outstanding Research Award from the Association of Asian-Australasian Animal Production.

#03 - Are we feeding sows too much during the wean-to-estrus period? - Dr. Trey Kellner

#03 - Are we feeding sows too much during the wean-to-estrus period? - Dr. Trey Kellner

Since the covid pandemic began, producers have seen the price of swine feed ingredients increase. With this increased cost, it is important that we research ways that we can save money on feed. In todayโ€™s talk, Dr. Trey Kellner discusses the results of a trial run at AMVC evaluating different feeding levels during the sowโ€™s wean-to-estrus period to see if there are any differences in the sowโ€™s reproductive potential when the amount of feed is reduced. Take a short break to get your 9-min weekly swine research digest and hear there interesting results!

Dr. Trey Kellner received his M.S. and Ph.D. from Iowa State University in 2017, following his B.S. at the University of Nebraska โ€“ Lincoln. He joined AMVC Nutritional Services as their first Swine Nutritionist. Trey oversees the feeding program for over 150,000 sows and 1.2 million market pigs per year in 9 states across 26 feed mills. Trey sets cost of production, space utilization, and market weight strategies for AMVC and AMVC managed clients, a setting in which dietary energy strategy via fat inclusion level is the most important variable. His recognized research on dietary fat digestion, utilization and deposition combined with his experience in modeling, formulating, and verifying the impact dietary energy via fat inclusion has on the bottom line for pork producers make him an ideal speaker on the subject matter of dietary fat. Trey was named a Young Scholar by the MW section of ASAS in 2017 and was presented with the Stahly/Peo Outstanding Swine Nutrition Graduate Student Award that same year.
