#160 - Pigs and airflow - how important is it and how do we optimize it? - Dr. Brett Ramirez
Pigs will only be able to grow at their max potential if they are in good health, and an important component of having good health is having proper air quality and airflow in your barns. In todayโs episode, I talk with Dr. Brett Ramirez about proper airflow, the importance of air quality in new and old barns, and other things to consider when designing a new swine facility.
"Ventilation is important and can't be ignored. It is something that works 24/7 and if it fails it's pretty catastrophic if you aren't prepared." - Dr. Brett Ramirez

๐ ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ด๐๐ฒ๐๐: Dr. Ramirezโs research and extension program encompasses swine and poultry production systems with a primary focus on: ventilation, natural resource and energy efficiency, animal energetics, environmental control, and precision livestock farming. Through mentoring students on fundamental and applied research projects, his program aims to generate practical solutions to current and emerging issues surrounding animal agriculture and its producers. He received his BS and MS in Agricultural and Biological Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2012 and 2014. Then, Brett completed his PhD at Iowa State University in late 2017 and transitioned to his current position as an Assistant Professor in the Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering.

#157 - Inspiring youth to be the future of the swine industry - Dr. Joel DeRouchey
Arguably the best thing that the swine industry can do today to plan for the future is to get the next generation interested in agriculture. With less families having a background in agriculture today than in past generations, it is much more difficult to introduce children to the swine industry. In todayโs episode with Dr. Joel DeRouchey, we talk about the importance of this subject and the opportunities we need to utilize to attract the bright minds of the future.
"Each one of you that are listening can have a large impact on spurring the interest of our youth in the swine industry." - Dr. Joel DeRouchey

He graduated with his bachelor's in Animal Science from South Dakota State University in 1997 and his M.S. (1999) and Ph.D. (2001) in Swine Nutrition from Kansas State University. He was hired in 2001 as the Northeast Livestock Extension Specialist for Kansas State University. In 2004, Joel moved to the Department of Animal Sciences and Industry as a Livestock Nutrition and Environmental Management Specialist and with a 40% Extension, 40% Research, and 20% Teaching appointment. Currently, he is a full professor and State Animal Science Extension Program Leader and has a 50% Extension and 50% Research appointment.

But what exactly do the consumers want to buy? In this episode with Dr. Marissa Hake, we work towards answering that question and learning how to build trust with the consumers so we can all work together to produce a product everyone wants.
"Zoom out a little bit and think about what you need on your farm in the coming years and what consumers are thinking about, and then figure out the best path for your business." - Dr. Marissa Hake

Dr. Koberโs first job after veterinary school was at a mixed animal practice in southern Michigan. Swine made up 50% of that practice and nearly all farms utilized outdoor production. He then moved to central Indiana and practiced with Dr. Max Rodibaugh, a great mentor and a leader in the industry. In 1993 he started his practice in Holland, Michigan, which he ran for 27 years before selling it in 2020.

#150 - Feeding gilts and sows - Dr. Crystal Levesque
Transitioning the gilt into a successful sow is not always a simple task. They require particular attention and we cant treat them just like any other finishing pig. Similarly, graduate students often need quality education and preparation for their next step in their career. In this episode I talk with Dr. Crystal Levesque about raising the developing gilt as well as how to best prep graduate students to enter the industry.
"The developing gilt is not a finishing pig. The way we create value in management and feeding on the finisher side does not apply to developing gilts." - Dr. Crystal Levesque

๐ ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ด๐๐ฒ๐๐: Dr. Crystal Levesque was born and raised on a broiler and mixed grain farm in central Saskatchewan, Canada. She completed her PhD at the University of Alberta followed by post-doctoral training at Prairie Swine Center and University of Guelph prior to accepting a position of Assistant Professor of monogastric nutrition at South Dakota State University. Her main research interests are protein and amino acid metabolism during pregnancy and maternal nutritional influence on offspring growth and development. She is actively involved in collaborative research on the impacts of alternative feeds and dietary additives on piglet growth, immune function, and gut health post-weaning and the use of the pig as a model for human health.

#149 โ Starting pigs off right and other methods of decreasing pig herd mortality - Dr. Chris Rademacher
Decreasing swine mortality still tends to be the largest opportunity for farmers to increase overall profitability, which is why it is important that we understand all the factors that play into herd health. Dr. Chris Rademacher and I address this issue in todayโs episode and talk about methods that can increase disease preparedness and what is necessary to start your nursery pigs off properly.
"We will always have some sort of disease status in our industry, so it's really more about coming up with ways to manage around that." - Dr. Chris Rademacher
