Episode 36-James Bartle, Outland Denim "If you want real change, restore people's dignity." Ending slavery #zeroexploitation
James Bartle is the founding CEO of Outland Denim, the denim brand making jeans differently and setting a new standard in fashion manufacturing. Driven by the desire to curb the trafficking of young girls into the $99 billion illicit commercial sex industry, Bartle created Outland to generate training and employment opportunities for women vulnerable to exploitation and abuse. Over six years Bartle developed a unique business model that would enable each of his seamstresses to gain a covetable skill set in tailoring while earning a living wage, receiving ongoing support and life-enhancing education, and crafting artisan quality jeans to compete in the global premium marketplace. In 2016, he took Outland to scale, securing international investment and distribution to further the company's mission to employ more young women while concurrently investing heavily in supply chain and environmental stewardship. With a background in manufacturing and start-up ventures, Bartle has taken a hands-on approach to developing Outland's signature jean styles, eschewing automation in favour of craftsmanship. He lives with his wife and two young daughters in the hills of the Gold Coast hinterland, Australia.
In this episode we talk about the journey, the commitment, how James stayed true to the mission and purpose of the company against the odds. The incredible luck of having a member of the Royal Family choose to wear their jeans and how that has impacted the company, and enabled 46 more women to be employed. This is a heartfelt conversation from a man who believes we can end slavery. I was moved many times. Please enjoy this episode.
Episode 35, Robb Smith -sex and sensitivity post #metoo, creating a fabulous marriage, +3 stages
Robb Smith is a leader and social innovator in human development and integral metatheory, advising entrepreneurs, executives and thought leaders on leading-edge social innovation, vertical development, leadership development and company growth.
He is CEO and co-founder, with American philosopher Ken Wilber, of Integral Life, a digital hub supporting the global trend towards meta-integrative human capacities (representing ~4% of adults in advanced economies). At Integral Life, he has spearheaded dialogues, courses and events that build skills and tackle pressing problems, including climate change and the rise of populism and the end of US hegemony. He has produced media and events that include Full Spectrum Mindfulness, The Future of Christianity, The Fourth Turning, WhatNEXT, Beyond Seeking, the Climate Leadership Campaign and Loving Completely.
He was founder and CEO of Chrysallis, the world's most comprehensive human development app, which offered hundreds of practices across more than 50 areas of human life. Chrysallis was nominated for the 2015 Goldman Sachs Healthcare Startup of the Year and the IONS award for Transformational Technology before being acquired in 2016 by ADURO, where he now chairs the Advisory Board and supports Fortune 500 companies to deploy full-spectrum human performance initiatives.
He was a co-founder and partner in Nevada Ventures, the state's first venture capital fund, dedicated himself to building Nevada's innovation economy (syndicating over $200 million in capital). He is a former director of Alere, a three-time Inc. 500 awardee, which became the largest population health management company in the United States.
Robb is a graduate of University of Nevada, the Venture Capital Institute and held the Certified Management Accountant and Certified in Financial Management designations. He is a fellow of Desert Research Institute, a former fellow of Aspen Institute and former trustee of Nevada Museum of Art. He was named to Nevada Top 20 under 40 lists in three different decades and in 2012 he was nominated for the TED Prize. He gave a TEDx talk in 2013 on The Transformational Life.
In a mushed up world of Politically Correct, hard right, hard left, #metoo, identity politics, too much/too little sexualization in the media, the rise of the fundamentalist view, this podcast provides contours for most of these experiences.
We experienced some minor technical issues with the recording. They do not take away from the conversation.
Episode 34, Matt Desmier -the power of confidence; to be human is to be vulnerable
A seemingly insatiable curiosity, distinctive laugh and unique dress sense are three of Desmier’s more prominent features, but it’s his ability as a branding strategist that truly sets him apart from his peers. Having originally trained as a designer (before realising his talents lay elsewhere), Matt is able to apply a design-thinking approach to help businesses understand their positioning, their messaging and their audience’s motivations, and he uses these tools to help authentic brands evolve. Through his agency Wise Old Uncle (a loose collective of equally talented individuals), Desmier and his team have worked with some impressive organisations, including the UK’s largest crowdfunding platform, the UK’s most respected insurance company and a global leader in mapping technology, helping them discover their voice, grow their audience and develop products and services fit for the 21st century. A regular feature on many annual digital lists (including the BIMA’s Top 100, the Maserati 100 and the Digital Leaders Top 100, where he came Runner Up as SME Digital Leader of the Year), Matt is an influential digital champion in the UK and his counsel has been sought by the likes of 10 Downing Street and St James’ Palace, as well some other far less prestigious organisations. When he’s not busy running around helping brands, he’s busy running around picking up after his two young children or, as a keen runner, he’s just busy running. In this episode we discuss confidence, vulnerability, dealing with the darkness of depression and anxiety, women in leadership, being a father and choosing to be a very present and engaged father, and much more.
Episode 33 Peter Thompson - If you look after nature nature will look after you
In this exquisite conversation with Peter Thompson, 5th generation farmer from rural Queensland in Australia (near Roma), I came to the realisation that stewardship of land with the fluency and capability that is part of Peter’s DNA is as relevant to leadership of any enterprise that holds the ongoing health and wellbeing of ALL of humanity and Earth. Indeed, the role of leader as steward in our business enterprises could well learn from farmers such as Peter.
In Peter’s words,
” I am a farmer who is passionate about agriculture and its valuable contribution to modern society. I believe we must operate as a team in conjunction with our urban counterparts for the long term financial and environmental sustainability of Australia. I believe by encouraging ways for people to connect to the land they will be able to keep their lives in a healthy perspective in this fast paced and rapidly changing world.”
Episode 32, Dr Mark Goulston - You can't be furious and curious at the same time
Dr. Mark Goulston is the host of the “My Wakeup Call” podcast where he interviews people on the wakeup calls that changed who they are and made them better human being and at being human.
He is one of the world’s foremost experts on deep listening, radical empathy and real influence with his book, “Just Listen,” becoming the top book on listening in the world, translated into twenty languages and a topic he speaks and teaches globally including training managers of the Russian Federation in Moscow.
He is an advisor, coach, mentor and confidante to CEO’s, founders and entrepreneurs helping them to unlock all their internal blocks to achieving success, fulfilment and happiness.
Originally a UCLA professor of psychiatry and crisis psychiatrist for over 25 years, and former FBI and police hostage negotiation trainer, Dr. Goulston's expertise has been forged and proven in the crucible of real-life, high stakes situations including being a boots on the ground suicide prevention specialist and serving as an advisor in the OJ Simpson criminal trial.
Including, “Just Listen,” he is the author of seven books with multiple best sellers. He writes or contributes to Harvard Business Review, Business Insider, Biz Journals, Fast Company, Huffington Post, Psychology Today and has appeared as an psychological expert in the media including: CNN, Headline News, msNBC, Fox News, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Forbes, Fortune, Psychology Today and was the subject of a PBS special.
He lives with his wife in Los Angeles, California.
This episode is filled with practical tools and skills for anyone seeking to navigate life, especially the dark night common to most of us.
Episode 31 - Mark Rowland - The new KPI - Measuring Happy Minutes, providing Happy Minutes
Episode 30 - Phillip Ullmann - We have to redesign capitalism to fit the new paradigm
Episode 29 Jack Tanner - Blockchain, technology, diversity and social evolution
Episode 28 Brad Dunne - Being a man is secondary to being a human being
Having grown up in the Western suburbs of Sydney in the 70's Brad quickly found his passions for surfing and sailing more suited to Queensland’s Gold Coast. Not possessing the greatest schooling credentials Brad made his way north based only on his ability to dream, his sense of humour and a good dose of curiosity.
After what on the surface appeared a blessed life Brad became faced with significant mental health issues, all unfolding and affecting everything within his life. Facing this with the absolute honesty and transparency and with all the faith and trust he could muster, Brad emerged again to reclaim his life not only mentally but with a greater connection to mind, body and soul. The very bottom of the darkest pit was in fact the opportunity to rebuild the foundations that stand him again strong and able to live a full and meaningful life with relevant purpose.
Today living in Perth Western Australia, married and with 4 Children, Brad runs the same company he founded almost 30 years ago. Other activities included the development company he runs with his wife Sharon and eldest son Bennet and his involvement in motorsport in the Porsche Carrera cup program. Brad remains passionate about his surfing and takes advantage of the magnificent West Coasts waters through boating.
Having faced the debilitating real life issues of depression and anxiety that effectively went on for 15 years, Brad is the living example of what might appear to others as an “enviable” life, which can in fact be a life of living hell. His commitment to being of help to organisations supporting those with mental health issues or to individuals suffering depression and anxiety has become a passion which provides great personal fulfillment. Being able to give back through listening and a genuine care for humanity is something that we as connected human beings must embrace.
His fundamental beliefs are now based on these reconstructed foundations. “We are born to live full and meaningful lives, we are not born to struggle. When we become honest with ourselves we open the pathways to find our real values which lead us to our purpose”.

But it’s his offline work, in large scale, emerging technology events where he has truly made his mark. With a deep sense of curiosity and a unique ability to connect cultural, political and technological dots, Murray has helped design and deliver events like Pause Fest in Melbourne and Myriad in Queensland.
In this conversation we talk being a dad, how to manage the low points, fishing as meditation and developing sustainable healthy habits using a simple technology.

Why Listen To This Podcast?
Fireside Chat, The Coming Global Economic Turbulence and what we can do about it
In 2006 Dr Martin gave a fireside chat to the Arlington Institute in Washington DC about the sequence of events that, if viewed objectively, could only lead to what we now know as the Global Financial Crisis.
Dr Christine McDougall wanted to recreate this Fireside chat 10 years later, specifically looking at the coming collapse of 2017, and what communities can do to build a more resilience local economy.
We commence with history, then move to the present, then consider what Australia can do as a Nation and what local communities can do.
This is Part 1. Part 2 is a Q@A.
Dan Pink
2:23AM Podcast, Season #1, Episode #16 - Dan Pink, Best Selling Author; Drive, To Sell is Human
Lucky me got to chat with Dan Pink. I have followed Dan since I read A Whole New Mind. So it was lovely when one of my friends and supporters of 2:23AM made the personal introduction.
I am always fascinated by the threads that resonate strongly through peoples lives, and with Dan it has been his commitment and tenacity to bring social and cultural research to a global audience in a way that makes sense and challenges some of our deeper assumptions about work, and what motivates us. And the extraordinary commitment Dan has to make his me

AJ Leon - Chief Misfit
I first met AJ via an interview I did with him 2 years ago. Within a year of that interview AJ and Melissa Leon were guests in my home on the first stop on their global pre-book launch tour. AJ's story is the one many want to be able to tell, but few have the courage to enact. Evacuating the trap of the soulless job and the lure of lots of money and stepping into the abyss, determined to forge paths created at the intersection of the life wanting to be lived and work wanti
Season #1, Episode #13, Don Beck
I met Don in the early 2000's when I went to Boulder Colorado to study Spiral Dynamics with him. Elza Maalouf was in the same class. Don also came to Australia several times and ran a three day workshop for a small group of us on the Gold Coast. Understanding Spiral Dynamics changed my world, enabling me to see global and local issues in a far more comprehensive way. My teacher of 27 years, R.Buckminster Fuller, talked about trim tabs, small actions that make massive change. Spiral Dynamics when handled by a spiral wizard, is a trim tab. Don is a spiral wizard. I hope you enjoy this e
Season #1, Episode #12 - Kevin Kelly - Senior Maverick Wired Magazine
I was so excited when I got a reply from Kevin Kelly saying yes to the podcast. For those of you who do not know who Kevin is, he is easily considered the wise oracle and elder of technology. Anyone in the tech space will pay attention to what Kevin says. He was one of the founders of Wired Mag, and is now its senior maverick.
I have been following the work of Kevin for many years now. He has such a whole systems view of technology. He is also a keen photographer, a hiker, father, world traveler and uses technology with great consideration. Plus he is a maker.
Polly Higgins - The Earth needs a good lawyer
The remarkable Polly Higgins is my guest today. I had become aware of her work several years ago then heard her talk in Brisbane in early 2014. As a life long student of Buckminster Fuller, Polly is a trimtab, taking what might look like a very small action that will have massive implications for the long term health of Earth. I simply love her work. She has a deep respect for business which is rare for someone so passionate about the long term health of Earth.

Spiritual Intelligence is an intelligence whose time has come.

Wow, wow, wow...Riversimple is not just about redesigning cars and redesigning business...what Hugo and his team have done over the last 15 years is turn how we engage in business on its head. As a follow on to the last episode with Frederic Laloux, Hugo is building a business in a very traditional area (car manufacturing) but turning it completely on its head. No tinkering here. This is a new model. It is quite breathtaking. I want one of his cars, now.

These organisations are located all around the world, across multiple industries, and many have been in operation for decade

Robb and I met in Brazil in 2009 at the State of the World Forum. When I began the 2.23am journey Robb was one of the people I went to for advise, mentoring, brainstorming, emotional and mental support. Only last Christmas, when the project was still in ideation stage, Robb encouraged me that this was really OK. (When most people would criticize for seeming lack of ideal to action after nearly two years.)
Robb is one of those people who has a big mission in life. That journey is never easy. In this conversation you will ge

Today's guest is the exceptional Jim Breen. We met in 2013 over breakfast on the Gold Coast. Ever the Irish man, the conversation was an adventure in story telling. I have the sketch in my note pad of how Jim planned Cycle Against Suicide. I refer to that sketch at least once a week as I build 2.23am. Having now spent time with Jim in Ireland, participated in a Cycle Against Suicide spin off, and met many of the wonderful people in Jim' life, I can say that Jim is only just getting started. (This interview was recorded at my end while sitting outside by the river in the sun. You will hear the birds and at one point, a dog, in the background.
