Kait Borsay: broadcast journalist, Offside Rule podcast co-host and voiceover artist

In today’s show, the last one before we break for Christmas, I get to speak to a broadcast journalist, voiceover artist and podcaster with 10 years experience in news and sport.

She was one of the first females to be associated with Talksport and has worked for SkySports, Sky News, Arsenal and Chelsea FC TV channels and the Premier League.

You may also know her as one third of the highly acclaimed Offside Rule podcast alongside Lynsey Hooper and Hayley McQueen. A show that’s been running since 2012 and is now part of Muddy Knees Media alongside the Totally Football Show.

This week’s guest is of course Kait Borsay.

Kait is always a delight to speak to and her route to where she is today has not been an easy one. It has come via drama school and a brief flirtation with fashion before entering sport at the infamous time of Keys and Gray at Sky, with barriers a plenty for talented female presenters. Something that has fortunately changed in recent years.

You’ll hear stories of interviews with Phil Neville, Rafa Benitez and a very awkward moment during a chat with Sir Sebastian Coe. You’ll have to listen on to find out what happened there.

And how, despite all the interest in women’s football and the successful year we have seen for the sport, getting sponsorship for a women’s football podcast like The Offside Rule is still proving as frustrating as ever, perhaps even more so.

Here are some links to what we speak about during the show;

Richard Gillis: sport business & golf journalist, author 'The Captain Myth' and co-founder of Unofficial Partner

This week’s guest is the enigmatic Richard Gillis, a well known figure within the sports, and especially sports business, sectors. He is a journalist, podcaster and author, with his 2016 book The Captain Myth: the Ryder Cup and sports great leadership delusion.

Some links to Rich's work;

I really loved this chat with Rich, someone I first really met 6 years ago when he moderated a panel for me in Shoreditch. An event that sticks in both our minds and you’ll hear why later on.

We covered many points in his career, the highs and lows. Times that have included writing fake viewers questions for the lunch break during Channel 4’s coverage of the cricket; riding the internet wave in the early 2000’s with Sport Business;

And his time in the West Indies for the 2007 Cricket World Cup covering the Irish team's involvement. A tournament that included their defeat of the mighty Pakistan team, led by Bob Woolmer. Shortly after Bob was found dead in his room and Rich found himself close to the centre of it all after spending what turned out to be his last day with him, and was staying just 3 doors down from where it happened. The media circus that ensued sounds bonkers.

Please do give us a rating or review on Apple as it really helps people find the podcast and give us a follow on any other platform you may be using. If you do enjoy it please share with one person who you think will appreciate you doing so.

A big thank you to Julian Moore at Mills & Reeve for kindly allowing us to record at their office in London.

Faye Carruthers: voiceover artist, broadcaster and journalist

Faye Carruthers: voiceover artist, broadcaster and journalist

Faye Carruthers is a broadcaster and voice-over artist who is probably best known for presenting of Premier League World on Sky and BT, and has covered women's football for a number of years.

This year she was out in France covering the event for TalkSport, something of an investment for the radio station that shows how far the women's game has travelled in the last four years especially. But in her early days she put of radio shows for her parents, even interviewing them for her shows. So a career behind the microphone was always going to be on the cards.

It's not been an easy journey as she's had to overcome imposter syndrome and being a woman in 'mens sport'. Being passed up for roles on no other basis than "we've already got two guys covering sport" responses. Times have thankfully changed and thanks to women like Faye the doors have started to open for others looking to follow her into the industry.

There's so many great stories from Steph Houghton's interview with Faye after their defeat to the US in the World Cup that turned viral. To her bumping into Jose Mourinho the day after he'd been sacked by Chelsea (for a second time)... the press thought he'd left the day before but she couldn't tell her press friends due as it would have been obvious who the leak had come from. So she kept tight lipped for six whole months!

If you enjoy the podcast please leave a rating or review. You can find Faye on Twitter and Instagram.

Alexandra Legouix: podcaster, singer, yoga teacher and tv presenter

Alexandra Legouix: podcaster, singer, yoga teacher and tv presenter

Alexandra Legouix is a podcaster, singer, yoga teacher and tv presenter who has worked in Formula One, World Rally and World Touring Car Championship. We discuss her unconventional route into presenting from acting school to Miss Great Britain, being a child interviewer, going back to basics through teaching presenting and our mutual love for podcasts.

She’s probably best known as the face and pitlane reporter of Eurosport and FOX Sport’s live coverage of the FIA WTCR World Touring Car Cup. A competition that has seen her visit many countries including Macau this weekend just gone.

Alex has determination in spades as she has shown by completing a Wingwalk for charity and taking part in a 6 day endurance rally across the Sahara desert in Morocco. And from her beginnings as an up and coming horse rider to an aspiring actor and singer, then becoming a regular face on TV it’s been a roller coaster journey which means she has so much experience for us to tap into and she doesn't disappoint.

The stories of WCTR driver Yvan Muller shows the different ways in which to approach people and how another interviewer was ruthlessly cut down by him. And how Joanna Lumley is as lovely as we all hope she is whilst Nicole Scherzinger offered up one of the most moments in her career.

She has not one but two podcasts, with her most recent one called Mindset Unfiltered with the likes of the aforementioned Yvan Muller, which launched after our chat (some inspirational words must have been exchanged when we met!) . The other, and one we talked about in the podcast, is Girl on Girl.

Thanks Alex for her time and to you for listening. Do give us a rating, review or follow and get in touch if you enjoy this on Instagram or Twitter

David Speed & Adam Brazier: co-hosts of hyper successful Creative Rebels podcast

Creative Rebels on Apple, Spotify and YouTube

Website: http://rebelscreate.com

Welcome to episode 1, yes the first ever Tables Turned episode, and I couldn't be happier than to welcome the fantastic Creative Rebels founders, David Speed and Adam Brazier onto the show.

From nothing they went straight into #1 for business on Apple Podcasts, something they'd aimed to achieve and did so through a mix of great planning and having the right guests on board to launch it.

Since then they've recorded interviews with US- entertainment interviewer extraordinaire Toure, radio presenter/actor/podcaster Reggie Yates and many others from the worlds of Instagram, YouTube and other creative platforms.

In this show we started off talking about our love of Adam Buxton's podcast and debate just how he manages to get such clear sounds for all his intros as he walks Rosie, his dog, in the fields near him. But then we moved onto more important subjects including the motivation behind starting the podcast, how they went about getting guests, their approach to interviewing and how that has changed, advice for others looking to start on a journey such as this and what the future holds for them.

If you enjoy this podcast please give us a follow, comment, rating, review or just let me know what you think at (Twitter) @danielmclaren or (Instagram) @danieljmclaren. And follow @tablesturnedpodcast on Instagram as well.

Make sure you listen to the David Garrido episode which has launched at the same time as this and subscribe/follow to make sure you don't miss next week's.

Thanks for your support!

David Garrido: presenter, podcast host and La Liga expert

David Garrido: presenter, podcast host and La Liga expert

Welcome to episode 2 of Tables Turned, and I'm delighted to welcome sports broadcaster, event host and podcaster extraordinaire David Garrido

His interviewing career almost ended before it began with what should have been an opportunity of a lifetime with a Spurs legend. Thankfully for David, and for us, he persevered with his dreams, took the lessons from it and landed an amazing role through BBC Talent at BBC Sport in 2001, staying at the broadcaster before moving onto SkySports in 2011.

In this show we started off talking about his recent hosting duties at the World Football Summit and why it was one of his favourite ever experiences. We also get into how he prepares for big interviews to make sure it looks as effortless as possible. His approach to hosting is so open and engaging that he quickly makes people feel comfortable and is one who tries to make it less of an interview and more of a conversation.

David has some fantastic stories around some of the biggest names in sport from David Beckham to a then-newly crowned F1 World Champion, Jenson Button. His love though is for Spanish football which is his main expertise when it comes to football. This led to him creating the weekly La Liga Lowdown podcast to get the lastest from the league.

I also mention his famous dance moves when celebrating in the Sheffield Wednesday dressing room after their play-off win back in 2016, you can watch his excellent footwork on https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2016/05/17/sky-sports-david-garrido-shows-off-dance-moves-after-sheff-wed-w/

There's so much to take from this chat if you're interested in interviewing, or just to listen to some of his great stories and how his career has unfolded over the last 20 years.

If you enjoy this podcast please give us a follow, comment, rating, review or just let me know what you think at (Twitter) @danielmclaren or (Instagram) @danieljmclaren. And follow @tablesturnedpodcast on Instagram as well.

Thank you to David for his time, and make sure you listen to the Creative Rebels episode which has launched at the same time as this and subscribe/follow to make sure you don't miss next week's.

Thanks for your support!

Coming soon... Tables Turned

Coming soon... Tables Turned

On Monday 11th November a brand new series called Tables Turned will be launching. Yes another podcast to add to the hundreds of thousands out there. But I think this one is a little bit special.

I admire the people who provide others with a platform when it’s never been more important to be able to do so and asking the right questions is at a premium. In a time when there is so much out there with podcasts, 24 hour TV, social media, streaming, gaming that is all calling for our attention. They are ones who make us care and bring us closer to the people whose stories need telling.

This is my why.

My name's Dan McLaren and this series I’ll be talking to people who I’ve got to know and admire to find out how they do it. What are the secrets to opening up those small windows into a life or a moment.

Next Monday there will be not one but two new episodes celebrating those behind the microphone.

  1.  David Speed and Adam Brazier from the no.1 business podcast, Creative Rebels. They launched in spectacular fashion in January this year with not one or two podcast, but FOUR and reached no.1 in the business podcast list on iTunes! They included huge guests including author/podcaster Emma Gannon, someone I already follow. Since then they've gone onto interview Reggie Yates, Toure and many others. I find out about how they went about launching a no.1 podcast (well worth taking notes!) and tips they've picked up about interviewing as they've been on this amazing journey.
  2. David Garrido, presenter on SkySports and La LIga podcast host. David is one of the nicest most chatty people you could hope to sit down with for an hour on a bank holiday in a bar at Waterloo Station! He has some fantastic stories from his time in radio and TV presenting including his first (and worst) interview with a famous then-Spurs player. It's been onwards and upwards since then.

Between now and Christmas you can expect to hear from sports presenters including Faye Carruthers (who was at this year's Women's World Cup), passionate motorsport expert Alexandra Legioux,  BBC Final Score voice, ex-Audioboom Head of Sports and now Sports Journalism lecturer Marc Webber, podcaster and long time friend who is becoming a great voice for sports graduates Ed Bowers.... and more to come.

Make sure you subscribe on your platform of choice and give me a follow on @danielmclaren (Twitter) and @danieljmclaren (Instagram) and there is also a dedicated Instagram page for this podcast @TablesTurnedPodcast
