S05 Episode 7 - Grace

In this episode of the Deep Resonance podcast, hosts Miche and Tamice start an impromptu recording to discuss a variety of topics including the multifaceted meanings of grace, the importance of overcoming mental models, and the heavy weight of words and their multiple interpretations.

They explore how conservative and progressive viewpoints on social justice can differ yet both desire the same end goals of love and justice. Miche also shares personal experiences with trauma and dissociation, and the two delve into how personal and societal trauma shape our approaches to activism.

They critically analyze the current state of progressivism and its colonial undertones, emphasizing how true social justice should resonate with deeper human values rather than simply opposing the 'other side.' The episode stresses the importance of resonance, empathy, and curiosity in driving meaningful change, while also touching on the need for new economic and social justice models beyond traditional binaries.

The discussion concludes with reflections on personal growth, the power of love, and future plans for upcoming podcast episodes.

GROUNDING OUR FAITH IN OUR EXPERIENCES

GROUNDING OUR FAITH IN OUR EXPERIENCES

Tamice Spencer-Helms joins Jared in this episode of Faith for Normal People for a conversation about the integration of faith and identity. Tamice shares their journey of navigating life as a queer and Black Christian, emphasizing the power of authenticity and agency in leaving toxic theologies behind. Join them as they explore the following questions:

  • What has Tamice’s faith journey been like?
  • When did the thread start to unravel for Tamice in terms of realizing that their theology couldn’t hold up the reality of racial injustice?
  • Whose voices inspired Tamice to integrate their faith and race?
  • Why does Tamice talk about whiteness as being like leaven?
  • How might we learn how to practice faith out of an experience of Blackness or queerness?
  • How did living at intersections change Tamice’s faith experience?
  • What is Tamice’s response to people who assert that you can’t be queer and Christian at the same time?
  • How can we gain confidence to acknowledge our own experiences, to be grounded and confident in those?
  • What practical advice does Tamice have for those who have been told to abdicate their agency in order to be Christian?

Pithy, shareable, sometimes-less-than-280-character statements from the episode you can share.

  • What I’d been given in terms of a worldview and a way to cope was not working because it doesn’t speak to this reality of being Black in this society.  — @TamiceNamae @theb4np
  • I went on a journey of leaving white evangelicalism and hearing from voices that loved God and did God talk with their Blackness in tow. And I was given some beautiful pictures and ways to think about God after that. — @TamiceNamae @theb4np
  • A lot of my friends who started to wake up to this around the time of George Floyd started to realize that there was a corpus of work of people who were bringing their lived experience to the faith and really wrestling with God in that place. — @TamiceNamae @theb4np
  • It requires a relative amount of humility to say, I never knew about this theology. I never knew that you could think about or talk about God or relate to God this way. — @TamiceNamae @theb4np
  • There’s been a relative amount of figuring out how to be authentic in my queerness and in my love for the divine, and in the ways that I try to live out what I think that means and should look like. — @TamiceNamae @theb4np
  • If we don’t tell stories and hear about God and learn about God from the margins, then our ability to navigate and be resilient in the world is going to be really small. — @TamiceNamae @theb4np
  • No matter how arbitrary race is, I still experience the world as a Black person. And so there needs to be a perspective of God from that place for me.  — @TamiceNamae @theb4np
  • Where I see goodness and where I see light and where I see ethical spirituality, I grab a hold of it. I say yes to it. I celebrate it. — @TamiceNamae @theb4np
  • I’m very thankful for my tradition because it grounds me in these stories about Jesus that I’ve always loved, and where I came to really love God and develop a relationship with the divine through these stories about Jesus. — @TamiceNamae @theb4np
  • I think of it like a twin sheet on a king-sized mattress. The pursuit of God in this frame was not big enough to contain life in reality. I could pretend that the bed is not king-sized, or I could just try to figure something else out. — @TamiceNamae @theb4np
  • We cannot abdicate our agency. We cannot outsource intuition anymore. God gave it to us. God gave it to us for a reason. — @TamiceNamae @theb4np
  • At the end of the day, I get to do this faith. It needs to involve me, all of me, and who I actually truly am. Otherwise, what are we doing? — @TamiceNamae @theb4np

S05 Episode 4 - Elevating Voices

S05 Episode 4 - Elevating Voices

In this episode of Deep Resonance, we (Mish and Tamice) dive into a candid conversation about our experiences as people from marginalized backgrounds navigating the complexities of social justice, allyship, and personal transformation.

We discuss the importance of centering voices from the margins and share some of the cringeworthy ways well-meaning folks sometimes miss the mark - from comparing transgender identities to drag performances to equating Asian representation with buying from a Chinese restaurant.

We also wrestle with the tensions that arise when privileged people speak out about oppression in ways that feel performative or self-serving, and explore how we can move towards true solidarity and collective liberation.

A major theme of our conversation is the need to go beyond pursuing "justice" within oppressive systems, and instead work towards deep, holistic transformation on both an individual and societal level. We reflect on how our own journeys have led us to embrace non-alienation, recognizing our shared humanity even as we challenge dehumanizing beliefs and actions.

We also talk about the importance of grounding our activism in lived experience and relationships of accountability, rather than settling for shallow "wokeness." And we share some exciting news about an upcoming course we're offering for those who want to dive deeper into these topics in community!

First of all, the name has changed to Deep Resonance and we have a new permanent host: Tamice Spencer Helms

The podcast will remain the same but the style will be a little different. Every week Tamice and I will bring in a topic and just run our thoughts over it live. Which means that whatever we say today, may change in the future because some of you dear listeners educate us, but it also means a more dynamic podcast coming to your inbox every week.

Today's episode is about the exhausted majority, Christian Nationalism, and white male progressives.

Hey fam! Brandon and Chelsea sit down with the incredible Tamice Spencer Helms for a raw and eye-opening conversation that'll leave you thinking.

They dive into some real talk about the wild differences in arrests during the January 6th Capitol riot and the peaceful George Floyd protests. Tamice pulls no punches, laying out the facts and sharing her honest reactions to the stark double standards at play. Then, things get deep as they explore the impact of whiteness on spirituality and faith. Tamice challenges the whitewashed version of Jesus and stresses the need to go beyond deconstruction to full-on decolonization. It's a conversation that goes straight to the heart of identity, faith, and the messy truths we often avoid.

As Tamice spills her own experiences, the hosts get real about how to talk with folks holding onto harmful beliefs – whether they're white or black. It's not just talk; it's a call to action for ethical spirituality and making real change.

The Wilderness Between Trayvon Martin & George Floyd--Vote Common Good Podcast

Doug Pagitt talks with Tamice Spencer-Helms about her book Faith Unleavened: The Wilderness Between Trayvon Martin & George Floyd. In her powerhouse debut book, Tamice Spencer-Helms exposes the leaven of whiteness that pervades so much of Christianity in America today. At a young age, the Black church introduced her to a God of love, empowerment, and joy. But an encounter with White Jesus set her on a path that nearly destroyed her faith altogether.

Chapter 1: Racism is the Problem - What Equity and Justice Require of Us w/ Tamice Spencer

Insight: Your team’s lack of “racial diversity” is not the root of the problem. Racism and white supremacy are the root problems.

Action: Adjust your perspectives and strategies accordingly.

My conversation partner for this episode is Tamice Spencer. Tamice graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a double major Bachelor’s degree in Religious Studies and Advertising. At age 20 she felt the call to vocational ministry quite strongly and hasn’t looked back. She has worked with hundreds of young adults and has a passion for learning, speaking, songwriting, and teaching.

Tamice is the Founder of Sub:Culture Incorporated a non profit that seeks to eradicate barriers for black college students. Sub: Culture Incorporated was created with students on the margins in mind and a longing to see them centered, and holistically cared for while on campus. Tamice  is also co-founder of the Kingdom Collaborative, an Atlanta based collective of HBCU ministry practitioners. For six years she served on full-time staff with Intervarsity Christian Fellowship and the last two years on staff as the Associate Area Director of HBCU Planting & Strategy for the Southeast Region.
