Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 42 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Saturday morning 18 May 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.

In two close Super Rugby Pacific games yesterday: The Hurricanes 32-24 Moana Pasifika and the Chiefs 26-23 Rebels.

It’s a fine looking day in Suva for the Fijian Drua vs the Reds at 2.05PM.

With one of the best Referees in the world in Angus Gardner officiating, it should be a cracker!

Apart from all the local rugby nuts, fans have flown in from Brisbane and Tonga – that’s right from the Kingdom, to support Reds 16 off the bench, George Blake.

In rugby league: “No, not at all,” ARLC Chairman Peter V’landys answered when asked if Papua New Guinea was locked in as the next NRL expansion team.

He also revealed the NRL is against basing a Papua New Guinea team in Australia, ahead of their meeting with the Australian Government yesterday, to discuss expansion.

While PNG are the firm favourites to be given the NRL’s 18th licence, V’landys stressed there’s still a few boxes to be ticked.

The first game of Magic Round at Suncorp Stadium between the Raiders and the Bulldogs finished four tries apiece, but the Raiders’ 100 per cent conversion rate proved to be the difference for a 24-20 win.

Later, the Broncos beat the Sea Eagles 12-13 with Jock Madden icing the game-winning field goal and Payne Haas scaring Blues selectors in a thriller at Suncorp last night.

Haas limped off with what looked like a serious ankle injury in the second half, but amazingly returned to finish the game.

Today we tip the Titans to timtam the Knights, the Sharks to shortbread the Sydney Roosters and Souths to cameo the Cowboys.

In Football: Leeds powered into the Championship playoff final as a three-goal first half blitz inspired their 4-0 rout of Norwich yesterday morning.

Leeds will face Southampton or West Bromwich Albion in the final at Wembley on 26 May.
The Championship playoff final is widely known as the most valuable game in sport, given the winning team can earn an estimated £265Million in additional revenue from TV deals, sponsorship and other income.

In combat sports: All eyes are on Riyadh, Saudi Arabia tomorrow – for the unification of all the World Heavyweight Boxing titles, and where earlier in the week Tyson Fury said, “I do it for the dough. I fight for the prize, whether it be gold bars, gold coins, cash, cars – however you want to pay me. As long as I can make a drink on it, deal done.”

So, not for the legacy then?

“I’m not too concerned about what people are going to be saying in 100 years,” Fury told journalists. “The dust from our bones won’t exist in 100 years, never mind what they say about a boxing match in 100 years.”

All the Ukranian Warrior had to say was, “You never see a fat wolf in the forest.”

And that’s a wrap!

Let’s get ready to R U M B L E.

Also in rugby this weekend - the next best 12 Men’s teams competing in the third and final round of the World Rugby HSBC 7s Challenger 2024 are in Munich, Germany.

The top four teams will secure a place in the new HSBC SVNS promotion and relegation play-off in Madrid on 31 May-2 June

Uruguay men lead the standings after first two rounds with Kenya, Germany and Hong Kong all in the chase.

Looks like Tonga and Papua New Guinea Men just went along for the ride.

In rugby league: Our tips for NRL Magic Round at Suncorp Stadium this weekend: The Raiders to Kremo Canterbury Bulldogs, the Broncos to biscotti Manly. On Saturday the Titans to timtam the Knights, the Sharks to shortbread the Sydney Roosters and Souths to cameo the Cowboys.

Our tips for NRL Magic Round on Sunday sees the New Zealand Warriors to wafer the Penrith Panthers, the Melbourne Storm to pavlova the Parramatta Eels and in the last game of magic round - Wests Tigers to drambuie the Dolphins.

In Football: Manchester United kept alive their hopes of salvaging a dismal season by qualifying for Europe thanks to a 3-2 win against Newcastle.

Erik10’s side are battling to secure a seventh place finish in the Premier League, which could secure a place in next season’s UEFA Conference League.

United can also qualify for the Europa League if they win the FA Cup final against Manchester City.
That’s an almighty BIG if.

In SportsBiz: The PGA Championship tees off this morning at Valhalla Golf Club, with fans in Louisville making this a historic tournament financially.

The PGA of America says that this is the highest ticket-revenue-generating edition of the event’s history, with sellout crowds expected to draw 200,000 spectators over the next four days.

Finally in combat sports: All eyes are on Riyadh, Saudi Arabia now that the final media session is over, with the weigh-in of both fighters about 20 hours away and of course the main event – to unify all the World Heavyweight Boxing titles.

So who will it be – the Gypsy King or the Ukranian Warrior? Tyson Fury or Oleksandr Usyk?

And that’s a wrap!

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 40 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Thursday morning 16 May 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.

In rugby union: The Reds landed in Fiji yesterday for their much anticipated clash against the bruised and battered Fijian Drua in Suva at 2PM on Saturday. Mick Byrne’s boys must win to save their season and to bolster his reputation heading into the Flying Fijians July tests.

In rugby league BREAKING NEWS: The South Sydney Rabbitohs have reportedly got their man, after agreeing a A$3Million three-year deal to bring Wayne Bennett back to Redfern.

The Sydney Morning Herald, who first reported the news, further claims Rabbitohs powerbrokers i.e. The Gladiator Russell Crowe will meet with the 74-year-old after Magic Round in Brisbane this weekend, to seal the deal.

In other BREAKING NEWS: David Fifita has turned his back on the Sydney Roosters four-year deal worth A$850,0000 a year from 2025, instead re-signing with the Gold Coast Titans in a stunning backflip to remain on the Gold Coast until the end of 2026.

In Football: Tottenham Hotspur had a slim chance to make the Top 4 of the Premier League and so qualify for the UEFA Champions League, but it is slipping through their fingers after they lost to Manchester City 2-0 yesterday, leaving Man City to beat West Ham to win the Premier League title.

In SportsBiz: Caitlin Clark played her first regular-season game in the WNBA and the Indiana Fever rookie has had a bigger and growing impact on the league than expected.

There have been sellouts, teams moving their games against Clark to bigger arenas, and a drastic increase in broadcast coverage for Indiana both nationally and locally.

It doesn’t look like Clark’s effect will slow down any time this season, at least.

She’s the favorite to win Rookie of the Year by a mile, has the third-best WNBA MVP betting odds behind A’ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart, and has the Fever as a top-five team to win the championship, according to most sportsbooks.

That alone is notable because Indiana finished with a 13–27 mark in 2023—last place in the Eastern Conference.

And we haven’t even mentioned ticket prices on the secondary market IF you can get your hands on them!

Finally in combat sports: The lightest Gypsy King seen in years indicates to boxing experts that Tyson Fury will use his height and reach to try and outbox the Ukranian Warrior Oleksandr Usyk over 12 rounds.

Meanwhile, the main supporting bout sees Aussie Samoan Cruiserweight Champion Jai Opetaia (24-0, 19 KOs) battling Mairis Briedis (28-2, 20 KOs) in a rematch for the vacant IBF World title in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Saturday.

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 39 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Wednesday morning 15 May 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.

In rugby union: England stars Billy and Mako Vunipola will leave Saracens at the end of 2024.

Prop Mako joined Saracens academy in 2011 and No. 8 Billy joined from Wasps in 2013. Together they won five Premiership titles and three European crowns at Saracens – Billy in 194 games and Mako in 229.

Could we see these Tongan tough guys down under in 2025?

Perhaps a swansong in Super Rugby with Moana Pasifika?

In rugby league NRL Magic Round all games at Suncorp Stadium: On Friday it’s the Canberra Raiders vs Canterbury Bulldogs @ 6pm followed by the Manly Sea Eagles vs Brisbane Broncos @ 8pm.

On Saturday the Gold Coast Titans vs Newcastle Knights @ 3pm, Cronulla Sharks vs Sydney Roosters @ 5.30pm and South Sydney Rabbitohs vs North Queensland Cowboys @ 7.45pm.

Finally, on Sunday sees the New Zealand Warriors vs Penrith Panthers @ 1.50pm, Melbourne Storm vs Parramatta Eels @ 4.05pm and the last game of magic round - Wests Tigers vs Dolphins @ 6.25pm at Suncorp Stadium.

In Football: Tottenham Hotspur has a slim chance to make the Top 4 of the Premier League and so qualify for the UEFA Champions League, but must beat Manchester City this morning, for whom defeat will hand Arsenal the advantage in the Premier League title race.

In SportsBiz: Last month, ESPN’s coverage of the WNBA draft averaged 2.45 million viewers—the largest TV audience for any WNBA telecast since 2000.

Meanwhile, demand for more broadcasts of preseason games has taken the league by surprise and led to some highly viewed illegal game streams.

And finally in combat sports: It’s all on - Tyson Fury’s father John was seen with blood gushing from his forehead on Monday after a video showed him butting a member of Oleksandr Usyk’s camp in the build-up to Saturday’s undisputed world heavyweight clash in Riyadh.

Thankfully the incident was quickly broken up by security.

In rugby league: Almost every team has been hit with injury woes after a week of carnage across the NRL.

Eels superstar Mitchell Moses is “touch and go” to return in Magic Round and stamp his case to be picked in the halves for the Blues.

The Manly Sea Eagles are facing a huge backline headache after Tom Trbojevic and Jason Saab both went down in Round 10.

Meanwhile, the Panthers have a halves crisis.

In Football: After the record–breaking FIFA Women’s World Cup down under in 2023, the A-League's stats for women’s football in Australia since then, shows great growth:

· 11,000 fans at the season opener - the biggest attendance ever.
· A 600% increase in Club membership.
· Average attendance doubling to 2200.
· More than 300,000 fans attending across the season – the highest-attended women’s sports league in Australian history.

In SportsBiz: Formula 1 Group recorded revenues of US$553Million in the first quarter of 2024.

In results released by Liberty Media ahead of its Q1 investor call, the company’s revenues jumped 45 per cent from the same period last year.

And finally in combat sports: “That’s the heavyweight division, it only takes one punch,” Tevita Pangai Junior said on Saturday night – his boxing career on the ropes after the former NRL star was knocked out in the first round by Kenny Niko who had lost all three of his only professional fights before Saturday.

It is a devastating blow for the former NSW State of Origin enforcer, who was this week given the cold shoulder by the Melbourne Storm.

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 37 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Monday morning 13 May 2024.

Happy Girimitiya Day in Fiji!

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.

In rugby union: All of a sudden, Mick Byrne and his Fijian Drua stars have taken a dive after two losses in a row on the road.

They went from their best game of the year last weekend against the Brumbies to not even turning up in Perth on Saturday.

Where to now boys – your destiny is in your own hands.

In rugby league: The Panthers have confirmed that superstar Nathan Cleary will miss eight weeks with a hamstring tear.

Cleary suffered the injury in the final minutes of the first half at BlueBet Stadium on Friday night.
The eight-week recovery puts Cleary in line to return for their clash with the Broncos on Friday 05 July, before the NRL pauses for the third and final State of Origin clash.

In Football: Manchester City closed in on a fourth consecutive Premier League title after thrashing Fulham 4-0 on Saturday.

City were two points clear at the top of the table until second-placed Arsenal beat Man U one nil at Old Trafford earlier today.

In SportsBiz: The Kentucky Derby 2024 was a massive hit: A Churchill Downs attendance of 156,710 people up 4.2% from a year ago and the highest total since 2018.

An average audience of 16.7 million on NBC Sports platforms, peaking at 20.1m, the most ever for an NBC Sports presentation of the race.

And finally in combat sports: Vasiliy Lomachenko outclassed George Kambosos Jr. on his way to the IBF World Lightweight title after a clinical 11th-round finish in the main event at the RAC Arena in Perth, Australia.

Earlier, Faiga ‘Django’ Opelu lost via TKO in Round 10 to Joe Goodall.

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 36 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Sunday morning 12 May 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.

In rugby union: The Fijian Drua 2024 season came crashing down in Perth last night.

The Western Force came out firing, scoring in the first minute of play and never let up, scoring five more tries with all six converted, plus two penalties and scoring the last try, for a handy haul of 23 points on the night for Ben Donaldson.

The Fijian Drua could only manage a penalty and one converted second half try to Ravutaumada in their 10-48 humiliation.

In other games: The Brumbies 29-21 NSW Waratahs, the Highlanders 32-29 Crusaders with Sevu Reece scoring a double and the Blues too good for the Hurricanes 27-31 at Eden Park.

In rugby league: Cronulla sure know how to spoil a contract-extension party - ending the Storm’s 14-game winning streak at AAMI Park after a thrilling 25-18 win to take a stronghold of top spot on the NRL ladder.

Even with Latrell Mitchell at Fullback for the Rabbitohs, St George Illawarra continued South Sydney’s season from hell with a 28-14 win at Kogarah Oval last night.

And Newcastle secured their third win on the trot without skipper Kalyn Ponga, toppling the Tigers 14-20 in sunny Tamworth.

In Super Netball: The scores were locked at 71 points apiece, but the Sunshine Coast Lightning were initially awarded a one point win as players shook hands and the Lightning packed their bags and left shortly after the umpires.

The Giants stayed warm at courtside prepared to play on, insisting that the scores were level, and the game should go into extra-time.

After a recount and some 50 minutes after the game initially finished, the umpires and the Lightning returned and extra time play resumed.

And the Giants’ Matisse Letherbarrow was the hero of the hour, sinking three supershots, for a controversial 86-80 victory.

Meanwhile, an old-fashioned spray from Melbourne Mavericks’ Coach Tracey Neville wasn’t enough to save her side from the equal lowest score recorded in Super Netball history, with the Adelaide Thunderbirds taking out the game 59-37.

In Football: “I will play my last game at the Parc des Princes on Sunday.”

And with that, Kylian Mbappe confirmed the worst kept secret in football - that he will leave French Champions Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season, bringing an end to his association with his hometown team, which began when he signed from Monaco in 2017 in a deal worth 180 million euros.

In the WNBA: Caitlin Clark played her first home game for the Indiana Fever 83-80 Atlanta Dream in their second and final preseason game before the WNBA season begins next week.

The former Iowa superstar scored 12 points during her 32 minutes on the court in front of 13,000 fans - nearly double the best Fever gate last season in which Indiana averaged a tick over 4,000 fans per game.

And that’s a wrap!

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 35 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Saturday morning 11 May 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.

In rugby union: After their best game of the season last weekend against the Brumbies, all the rugby experts in Australia and New Zealand are tipping the Fijian Drua to run over the Western Force in Perth tonight.

But like the Drua at home in Lautoka, the Force are a tough nut to crack at home on the other side of the world.

Head Coach Mick Byrne has made just two changes to his match-day 23 as the Drua search for their first ever win in Perth.

In the starting XV: 1 Haereiti Hetet, 2 Tevita Ikanivere, 3 Mesake Doge, 4 Mesake Vocevoce, 5 Isoa Nasilasila, 6 Vilive Miramira, 7 Kitione Salawa and Captain Meli Derenalagi at Number 8.

At 9 Peni Matawalu, 10 Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula, 11 Taniela Rakuro, 12 Michael Naitokani, 13 Iosefo Masi, 14 Selestino Ravutaumada and 15 Ilaisa Droasese.

On the bench: 16 Zuriel Togaitama, 17 Emosi Tuqiri, 18 Samu Tawake, 19 Leone Rotuisolia, 20 Motikiai Murray. Simi Kuruvoli 21 is back up halfback, 22 Kemu Valetini and 23 Epeli Momo.

In rugby league: While Penrith secured a 16-10 win over a Bulldogs pack littered with former Panthers at BlueBet Stadium last night, Ivan Cleary limped off nursing a hamstring, in a big blow for his Club and also the NSW Blues.

Penrith could be without their gun No.7 for an extended period.

In Football: Manchester City has struck a deal with the Philadelphia Union and their 14-year-old talent, Cavan Sullivan, such that, the player joins them in the Premier League as a professional when he reaches 18 years of age.

In SportsBiz: The average TV viewership for the F1 Miami Grand Prix last Sunday at 3.1 million viewers represents Formula One’s largest US TV audience on record, eclipsing the 2.6m for its debut in 2022, and beating last year’s metric by 48%.

There had been some questions about viewership going into the weekend, but not only did the Miami GP further establish itself as a fixture on the overall F1 calendar, but it also reached a whole new level of exposure.

Finally in combat sports: Ukranian megastar Vasiliy Lomachenko in Australia to fight George Kambosos this weekend, has beaten over 400 fighters on his way to becoming one of the greatest fighters of this and any era.

Remember, he needed only three professional fights to win a world title – the first of three, all in different weight categories.

And this after Lomachenko had already won two Olympic golds, and who, at his peak, was compared to Muhammad Ali no less.

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 34 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Friday morning 10 May 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.

In rugby union: Finally, after over a century of English-led northern hemisphere infatuation with forward play, World Rugby has made some rule changes to speed up the game and make it more attractive to watch:

· It will no longer be possible to choose a scrum from a free-kick. Free-kicks must either be tapped or kicked to encourage more ball in flow.
· The ball must be played after the maul has been stopped once, not twice.
· Play on at a lineout if the ball has not been thrown in straight but only if the lineout is uncontested.

In rugby league BREAKING NEWS: The Sydney Roosters have won the David Fifita sweepstakes, with the damaging Tongan backrower set to join the Tricolours on a four-year deal from 2025.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Fifita’s deal with the Roosters will be worth A$3.3Million over four years.

In Football: Kylian Mbappe’s time at his hometown club Paris Saint-Germain is limping to a sad conclusion in the wake of their shock UEFA Champions League semi-final exit at the hands of Borussia Dortmund.

The French superstar is expected to finally join Real Madrid this off-season. Real beat Bayern Munich 1-2 in their semifinal.

In SportsBiz: TKO the umbrella company of UFC and WWE earned US$629Million in revenue in the first quarter, beating Wall Street estimates by $20M, according to Zacks Equity Research.

The company suffered a net loss of US$249.5M in the quarter, as well as decreases in cash flow, largely due to taking a US$335M charge related to settling the UFC fighter antitrust lawsuit, which was viewed as a favorable outcome for UFC.

TKO’s stock is up more than 22% this year at US$98.27 yesterday.

Finally in combat sports: As he gears up for his much-anticipated clash with Oleksandr Usyk on 18 May in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Tyson Fury has uploaded an eye-catching photo of himself in training, showing off his ripped physique.

At stake are all the World Heavyweight Boxing titles, which would make the winner, the premier heavyweight of the century.

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 33 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Thursday morning 09 May 2024.   Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.                                                                    In rugby union: England back-row Billy Vunipola was arrested in Mallorca, Spain, on Sunday for resisting arrest and has been fined €240 for the incident.   In a statement shared by his club Saracens, Vunipola denied reports that he had acted violently to cause the arrest, though Spanish police claimed he slapped an officer.   "I can confirm I was involved in an unfortunate misunderstanding when I was leaving a club in Mallorca on Sunday, which got out of hand," his statement read. "Contrary to media reports, there was no violence, no fight and I did not threaten anybody at any stage, with bottles or chairs or anything else. "I was charged with resisting arrest and, following an 'express trial,' I have paid a fine of €240. The Spanish police investigation is now closed and I am flying back to the UK today." But, according to a report in a Spanish newspaper, Vunipola was tasered twice by police after threatening customers and security personnel and removing his shirt in a bar named Epic in Palma early on Sunday.   The report added that the 31-year-old was handcuffed by the police and taken to a hospital in Palma, where he was sedated, before being taken to court on Sunday afternoon. "In the early hours of yesterday morning, at 4.30am, the National Police proceeded to arrest a 31-year-old foreign man, for a crime of disobedience and attacking a police officer," a spokesperson for the National Police in Mallorca said. Saracens had earlier issued their own statement saying they would deal with the incident "internally."   Vunipola has made 75 appearances for England, most recently featuring in the narrow Rugby World Cup semifinal defeat to South Africa in October. He played for Saracens against Bath in their 15-12 win on Friday. In rugby league: Wayne Bennett believes a Club based in Perth should be next in line for an NRL expansion licence. “They have had a lot of NRL and Origin games over there. “There are a lot of Australians, English people and New Zealanders who know about rugby league. “It is a huge area of income. They have got some of the biggest companies in Australia in Perth and Western Australia. It all makes sense, and they have got great facilities.” In Football: Melbourne Victory goalkeeper Paul Izzo was the hero as his side progressed to the next round of the A-League finals series after he saved three penalties in a penalty shootout and drilled one home himself as the Victory won it 3-2 over Melbourne City at AAMI Park last weekend.   In combat sports: “The calls for Naoya Inoue to fight outside of Japan are ridiculous,” legendary boxing promoter Bob Arum said on Saturday in Yokohama. Arum’s company, Top Rank, helped promote Monday’s fight. “He is the biggest attraction in boxing in Japan by far, and Japan has become the center for boxing in the lighter weight divisions. “So in my view, it would be foolhardy for Inoue to leave Japan and to fight outside of Japan. For what?” And that’s a wrap!   Please hit the like and subscribe buttons below if you want to receive more Pasifika sports highlights on Breakfast Bites.   Mahalo and Ka kite; for TEIVOVOdigital.com, I’m Culden Kamea tanking you all too mass for all your love and support.   #TEIVOVORugby  #TEIVOVODigital #TeivovoRugby #TeivovoDigital #rugby #rugby7s #FijiRugby #rugbyunion #rugbyleague #Raka #team #rugbytraining #sports #FRU #Fiji #womensrugby #rugbygirls #wrugby #ladiesrugby #womeninsport  #woman #rugby #rugby7s #FijiRugby #rugbyunion #rugbyleague #fitness #weightlifting #training #team #rugbytraining #sports  #rakavi  #DevelopmentFiji

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 32 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Wednesday morning 08 May 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.

In rugby union: The Top 8 for the SVNS 7s League Grand Finals in Madrid at the end of May:
Pool A Women sees New Zealand, USA, Canada and Great Britain.
Pool B Women includes Australia, France, Fiji and Ireland.
Pool A Men sees Argentina, Australia, France and Great Britain
Pool B Men includes Ireland, New Zealand, Fiji and South Africa.
In rugby league: The Rabbitohs have named two debutants in their new-look outfit that includes the returning Latrell Mitchell who has served his suspension.

Dion Teaupa makes his NRL debut at halfback, while mid-season recruit Gehamat Shibasaki will make his debut on the Wing.

Kevin Walters has solved his halves headache by naming one-game rookie halfback, Joshua Rogers to take over from Adam Reynolds, playing alongside Ezra Mam.

Meanwhile, Brad Arthur has called upon one of the Eels rising stars - Blaize Talagi to replace the injured Clint Gutherson.

In Football: Manchester United Manager Erik Ten Hag has vowed to ‘keep fighting’ despite his side staring down the barrel of a worst-ever Premier League finish after a 4-0 thumping by Crystal Palace.

United has now lost 13 games in the league this season, their most ever in the Premier League era, and their 81 goals conceded across all competitions – so far – is the worst since 1976.

In combat sports: George Kambosos Jr boldly declared Vasiliy Lomachenko no longer “has that dog inside of him” as the two prepare to throw down for the vacant IBF Lightweight World title on Sunday at the RAC Arena in Perth.

It will be Kambosos Jr’s first fight since a contentious victory over England’s Maxi Hughes in which he took home the IBO world title.

Finally, in SportsBiz: What a finish to the 2024 Kentucky Derby!

Mystik Dan, an 18–1 long shot going into the race, won in what was the Kentucky Derby’s first three-horse photo finish since 1947.

Marking a significant contrast from a 2023 event that was marred by seven horse deaths leading up to the race and several more thereafter - ultimately leading to a suspension of operations at Churchill Downs for more than three months and an extended investigation.

This year’s event was a massive hit in person, on television, and on betting platforms:
A Churchill Downs attendance of 156,710, up 4.2% from a year ago and the highest total since 2018.
An average audience of 16.7 million on NBC Sports platforms, peaking at 20.1m, the most ever for an NBC Sports presentation of the Kentucky Derby.
A record US$320.5Million bets on the Kentucky Derby, up 11% from last year.

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 31 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Tuesday morning 07 May 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.

In rugby union: So what happened to the Fiji Men’s 7s team at the Singapore 7s?

At least they made it into the Top 8 for the SVNS 7s League Grand Finals in Madrid at the end of May. Unlike Samoa who slipped into the promotion-relegation competition in Madrid and risk falling out of the top 7s series altogether.

In rugby league: Tongans on the move! David Fifita’s future on the Gold Coast is up in the air with three Clubs now linked to the Titans superstar offering A$850,000 a year.

Fellow Tongan enforcer, Tevita Pangai Junior is in talks with Craig Bellamy at the Storm as he eyes a return to the NRL.

Meanwhile, Cooper Cronk believes South Sydney should pay Wayne Bennett whatever he wants to leave the Dolphins “Right now.”

“They’ve suffered heavy losses the last three weeks and this can’t continue for the rest of the season.”

In SportsBiz: There are worrying signs that the global F1 racing series has hit some speed bumps in the United States.

Last year on ESPN the F1 season on US television, generated an average of 1.1 million viewers across ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC, an 8% drop from the 2022 average of 1.2 million.

F1 Racing also suffered a dramatic decline in social media mentions and growth last year, according to the London-based social intelligence group Buzz Radar, who report F1 was down 70% in the first five months of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022, with new followers down 46% and social reach down 64%.

At this early stage of the 2024 season, viewership on ESPN in the US is trending downward again from last year: Averaging only 728,000 viewers.

The season-opening races in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the Australian Grand Prix all suffered lower viewers.

On a positive note, the Japanese and the Chinese Grand Prix races recorded huge spikes.
An explanation for the overall dip in US TV viewership this year, could be that a couple of the early season F1 races were broadcast live overnight in the US, or on Saturdays instead of Sundays, according to ESPN.
Then there’s the Max Verstappen factor.
In Football: Central Coast Mariners have become just the second A-League team to win an Asian Club Competition after beating Lebanese team Al-Ahed 1-0 in the AFC Cup final.

An 84th-minute goal in Muscat, Oman yesterday morning secured the Mariners the victory, as well as A$2.3Million in prizemoney.
They also clinched the A-League premiership last week.

Finally, in combat sports: Japan’s Naoya ‘The Monster’ Inoue suffered his first ever knockdown in the opening round against Mexico’s Luiz Nery.

Defending the IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO Super Bantamweight World titles, “The Monster” bounced back with a second-round knockdown of Nery and soon took over with his brutal punches resulting in another knockdown in the fifth, and then the KO in the sixth round at the sold-out, 55,000-seat Tokyo Dome.

Sayonara Nery!

And that’s a wrap!

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 30 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Monday morning 06 May 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.

In rugby union: History was created at the Singapore 7s yesterday with Argentina men winning the SVNS 7s League ahead of the Grand Finals in Madrid at the end of May.

This after the All Blacks 7s beat Ireland to win the Singapore 7s tournament, after the Black Ferns 7s beat arch-rivals Australia to win the first ever Singapore 7s Women’s section.

Samoa slipped into the promotion-relegation competition in Madrid.

In Super Netball: It took nine months but West Coast Fever gained revenge against the NSW Swifts yesterday.
Their 75-59 win came after the Swifts secured a thrilling final-second victory over the Fever in last season’s Super Netball preliminary final, crushing their chances at back-to-back titles.
Meanwhile, the Melbourne Vixens continued their unbeaten start to the season with a bruising 68-55 win over Queensland Firebirds in front of a packed crowd of over 8600 at John Cain Arena.
The Vixens had to use all their composure while the Firebirds attempted to ruffle their feathers.
In rugby league: “He’s a genius. The players have bought into it. They want to play for him and the club and each other and they’re doing a terrific job in the top four. You couldn’t wish for better,” Mal Meninga on Wayne Bennett and the Dolphins.
Bennett will hand the coaching reigns over to assistant Kristian Woolf at season’s end after two years in charge, but it begs the question — why go ahead with the succession plan when they’ve got such a good thing going?
In athletics: Watch out world, the Australian women’s 4x100M relay team means business.
For the first time since the Sydney 2000 games, the women’s relay team will be back in Olympics action after a record-breaking performance in the opening round of the World Athletics Relay Championships in Nassau, Bahamas.
The foursome of Ebony Lane, Bree Masters, Ella Connolly and anchored by teen sensation - Australia’s fastest woman, Torrie Lewis, stopped the clock at 42.83 seconds to finish second in their heat behind Germany.
Their time was the fifth fastest overall which not only booked their place in the final, but it also booked their ticket to the Paris Olympics in August.
Finally, in combat sports: Undisputed Super Middleweight World Champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez beat Jaime Munguia by unanimous decision in their world title fight at T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas yesterday.
Canelo dropped his fellow Mexican with a vicious uppercut in the fourth round and got stronger throughout the fight.
“I’m the best fighter right now, for sure.” Alvarez said after the fight. His next opponent remains a mystery.
“I’m going to rest,” he continued.
“But if the money is right … I can fight right now.”
Spoken like a true champion.

And that’s a wrap!

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 29 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Sunday morning 05 May 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.

In rugby union: Argentina missed out on the chance to be crowned SVNS League Winners 2024 yesterday as they lost 5-21 to Ireland in their HSBC Singapore 7s quarter-final.

Los Pumas 7s have been the standout men’s side this season, winning in Cape Town, Perth and Vancouver, but their form has dropped of late in Los Angeles, Hong Kong and now at the Singapore 7s.
After two good wins against Great Britain and Brazil on Day One, Team Fijiana were absolutely hammered 60 zip by Australia in their last pool game yesterday - OUCH.

Thankfully, the Fiji girls lifted to beat Japan 10-12 in their Quarterfinal and play New Zealand in a semifinal later today.

After two losses on Day One to USA and Great Britain, the Fiji Men’s 7s team bounced back to record a good win over Ireland 19-26 in their final pool game.

They beat Canada 7-31 as they try to win 9th place.

Meanwhile, Samoa lost badly 45 zip to Spain, after earlier losses against France and South Africa.

Samoa lost to Spain again 19-12 in their 9th place semifinal.

In Super Netball: The Melbourne Mavericks delivered an against-the-odds inaugural win and handed the early premiership favourites, Sunshine Coast Lightning, their third consecutive loss 64-65, with a last-second goal securing the win.

Meanwhile, the Adelaide Thunderbirds showed no mercy handing Giants Netball a 49-69 thrashing, their fourth from as many games. This leaves the Giants as the only team in Super Netb
all Australia yet to notch a win.

In rugby league: In an entertaining and sometimes controversial clash at Cbus Super Stadium, the Gold Coast Titans fought back from 6-20 down to level the scores at 20 in the 55th minute.

A Nick Meaney penalty goal in the 68th minute proved the difference in the end, with the Storm holding off the Titans to escape with a seventh win, 23-20.

In football: Now in League One – two tiers down from the Premier League, the Racecourse Ground where Wrexham plays its home games, is adding seats.

First going up from about 12,000 to 16,000, and then much, much more, working from stand to stand, to eventually get between 45,000 and 55,000 fans in.

A venue of that size would put the small Welsh Football Club on par with the likes of Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium at 55,000 and above Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge with 40,000 capacity.

In SportsBiz: The widespread interest in F1 racing saw total race attendance spike to 6 million in 2023, and revenue soared to US$3.22Billion, according to owner Liberty Media.

Last year also marked the debut of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, as F1 grew to its capped-out 24-race schedule.

Finally, in combat sports: Undisputed Super Middleweight World Champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez 60-2-2 and Jaime Munguia 43-0 with 34 by KO, both made weight as they prepare to face off this morning for their world title showdown at T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas.

Alvarez weighed in at 75.6kg, while fellow Mexican Munguia tipped the scales at 76.1Kg.

Let’s get ready to R U M B L E!

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 28 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Saturday morning 04 May 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.

In rugby union: At the Singapore 7s yesterday: Fijiana had two good wins, firstly 24-10 Great Britain, they then plonked Brazil 7-29.

So Team Fijiana play Australia at 4.50PM today in their last pool game.

The Fiji Men 7s team however, suffered two losses: 14-33 USA in their first pool game and Fiji 14-19 against Great Britain.

They play Ireland at 5.37PM today in their final pool game.

Meanwhile, like their Fijian bros, Samoa also had two losses: Against France 17 zip and then Brian Lima’s boys lost 10-15 to South Africa.

They play Spain at 5.59PM today.

In rugby league: The Roosters thrashed the Broncos 18-40 with Brisbane skipper Adam Reynolds facing a long lay-off with a ruptured bicep after a brutal clash at Suncorp Stadium last night.

Reynolds went off in the second half with a potential season-defining injury, while Angus Crichton starred with a classy double for the Chooks.

In football: The Premier League title race is going down to the wire – Arsenal are top on 80 points with three games to play, one point ahead of Manchester City and five clear of Liverpool – but reigning champions City have a game in hand and remain favourites to steal it.

In combat sports: Canelo Alvarez has accomplished everything he set out to do in two decades as a professional boxer.

With 60 wins – 39 by knockout, he has just two decision losses and two draws, and the four-division champion is the first fighter to unify all five World Super Middleweight titles.

Yet he doesn’t feel anywhere close to finished.

“I want to still make history with these kind of fights,” the Mexican fighter said before tomorrow’s Prime Video pay-per-view main event, drawing another boisterous sell-out crowd to his annual Cinco de Mayo weekend bout, this time against undefeated countryman, Jaime Munguia at T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas.

Finally in SportsBiz: OK so you’re a sports-loving Billionaire. Here’s what’s up for grabs in sports this weekend: Start with the PGA Tour, The CJ Cup Byron Nelson Tournament at McKinney, Texas with a purse of US$9.5Million.

Next catch the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs with a purse of US$5Million distributed to the top-five finishers.

Then jump on your private jet and hop across to Spain for the ATP Tour and WTA Tour - Mutua Madrid Open with a combined purse of US$16.7Million, and finally finish off with the LIV Golf, Singapore at the Sentosa Golf Club with a total purse of US$25Million.

Er boss, what about the Singapore 7s?

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 27 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Friday morning 03 May 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.

In rugby union: Team Fijiana 7s open their Singapore 7s tournament today against Great Britain at 4.28PM, then they take on Brazil at 9.43PM, and play Australia at 4.50PM on Saturday in their last pool game.

The Fiji Airways National Men’s 7s side will play the USA at 5.14PM today in their first pool game before facing Great Britain at 10.30PM, and they play Ireland at 5.37PM on Saturday in their final pool game.

Samoa plays France at 6.20PM today and South Africa at 11.18PM tonight. They play Spain at 5.59PM tomorrow.

In rugby league: PERFECT STORM – the South Sydney Rabbitohs are set to offer Wayne Bennett a three-year deal amid reports the master coach has sounded out the Parramatta Eels about a potential position should Brad Arthur be sacked.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported Souths want Bennett back on a three-year contract from 2025, but that Bennett had interest in the Eels job if it became available.

However, the Eels Board has reportedly decided not to follow up on approaches from third parties acting on Bennett’s behalf.

Yeah right!

In football: The UEFA Champions League semifinal yesterday: PSG 0-1 Borussia Dortmund. So once again, PSG’s dominance in France has not translated into Europe over the 12 years the Club has been funded by Qatar. In the earlier semifinal: Real Madrid 2-2 Bayern in Munich.

In combat sports: Ryan Garcia is rejecting claims that he used performance-enhancing drugs, after he reportedly tested positive for a banned substance ahead of his stunning upset win over Devin Haney.

ESPN reported that the 25-year-old Garcia failed two drug tests administered the day before and the day of the 20 April pay-per-view bout in New York City, citing a Voluntary Anti-Doping Association letter.

Garcia vehemently denied the allegations in a video posted on social media.

Finally in SportsBiz: “They messed up. They should have negotiated until the very end,” he said. “Caitlin Clark was in the best position to maximize her value immediately.”

That’s Sonny Vaccaro, a former executive who was instrumental in signing Michael Jordan to Nike and Kobe Bryant to Adidas, said in an interview with TMZ Sports, on Caitlin Clark’s reported eight-year - US$28Million contract with Nike - the most lucrative shoe deal a women’s basketball player has ever signed.

He said that Clark’s representatives should have negotiated for more.

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 26 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Thursday morning 02 May 2024.   Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.                                                                    In rugby union: With less than 100 days until the Olympic Games Paris 2024 gets underway, the action at the Singapore 7s will be intense from start to finish with World Rugby’s revamped competition formula set to deliver fans even more excitement, jeopardy and entertainment.   Under the new HSBC SVNS 2024 model, the Top 8 teams based on cumulative series points at the conclusion of the seventh round in Singapore will secure their place in the 'winner takes all' Grand Final in Madrid on 31 May-2 June. Seven men’s and women’s teams have already secured their spots in the SVNS Grand Final in Madrid. Great Britain and Brazil will battle for the all-important eighth spot in the women’s standings while the USA currently occupy eighth place in the men’s standings but face competition from Great Britain, Spain and Samoa. The four lowest ranked men’s and women’s teams at the end of the Singapore event will join the top four teams from the World Rugby HSBC 7s Challenger 2024 in a high stakes promotion and relegation tournament in Madrid. In rugby league: South Sydney Rabbitohs Chief Executive Officer Blake Solly claims they gave axed Head Coach Jason Demetriou “every single opportunity” before eventually deciding he wasn’t the right man to lead the Club after two board meetings in 24 hours were needed to come to the decision. Jason Ds agent claimed Souths process was “extremely cruel”. Asked if Wayne Bennett had been contacted as a potential candidate to take over in 2025, Solly said, “Wayne is one of the coaches we will talk to. “Wayne had great success, he left on very good terms. We will speak to Wayne and if he’s available and interested certainly will progress that.” In football: Our world famous tip for the UEFA Champions League semifinal today: PSG to bongo Borussia Dortmund, although PSG’s dominance has not translated into Europe over the 12 years the Club has been funded by Qatar. In the other semifinal yesterday: Real Madrid 2-2 Bayern in Munich. In SportsBiz: LeBron James has made more than US$479Million in on-court career earnings at the Los Angeles Lakers, so he’ll break the half-billion-dollar mark no matter what happens next season. The maximum value of a projected three-year contract extension LeBron James would be eligible to sign with the Lakers if he opts out of his US$51.4M player option for the 2024–25 NBA season, according to Spotrac is US$161.9M. After the Nuggets eliminated Los Angeles from the playoffs Monday night, James, 39, was noncommittal about his future with the team. In combat sports: Former World Heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson’s July 20 fight against YouTube fake boxer Jake Paul in Dallas has been sanctioned as a professional bout, fighters and promoters announced on yesterday.   The fight will be over eight two-minute rounds with the result to count on the record of both Paul and Tyson, who lost his last official bout in 2005. Tyson, 50-6 with 44 knockouts, has not won a fight since beating Clifford Etienne in 2003. There had been concerns over sanctioning anything more than an exhibition due to the age difference of the fighters. Paul is 27. Tyson turns 58 on June 30. “Mike Tyson wanted it to be a pro fight. Netflix wanted it to be a pro fight. So I agreed to make it a pro fight. Winner takes all,” Paul posted on X, formerly Twitter. The bout will be at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys. Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 25 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Wednesday morning 01 May 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.

In rugby union: Our world famous tips for the Fijian DRua’s remaining games:
· The Brumbies will bumblebee the Drua in Canberra this weekend
· The Fijian Drua will fabuloso the Force in Perth
· The Drua will rumble the Reds in Suva
· The Highlanders will hubble the Drua in Dunedin
· The Drua will drill the Rebels in Lautoka

In rugby league BREAKING NEWS: Jason Demetriou has been sacked as South Sydney Rabbitohs Head Coach effective immediately, following a crunch board meeting last night, with rumours Wayne Bennett will return in 2025.

Meanwhile, a handful of assistant coaches including Souths legend John Sutton will take over.
In other rugby news; the Sydney Morning Herald is reporting that Wallabies five-eighth Carter Gordon is weighing up a code switch and has held talks with the Gold Coast Titans, amid uncertainty over the survival of his club, the Melbourne Rebels, facing being axed from Super Rugby Pacific due to massive debts.

Gordon is off contract with the Rebels and Rugby Australia at the end of the 2024 season.
So who gets Taniela Tupou – Manly?

In football: Our world famous tips for the UEFA Champions League semifinals tonight – Real Madrid to bonza Bayern Munich and PSG to bongo Borussia Dortmund.

In combat sports: Apart from going unbeaten in his first 21 fights, Vergil Ortiz Jnr has won all of them via KO. Officially, the rising star has finished almost half of his rivals within two rounds – with the quickest being Brazilian Evandro Cavalheiro, 21 seconds, and another in just 40 seconds.

Indeed, knockouts are quickly becoming the undeniable calling card of this 26-year-old boxing phenom.

A Mexican-American talent who, on a blockbuster August 4 card topped by US megastar Terence Crawford, will throw down against Aussie champ Tim Tszyu in a bout that is already being hyped as a potential Fight Of The Year contender.

In SportsBiz: Here’s a closer look at the NFL’s newest field generals, their new NFL contracts and some of their endorsement deals:

1. Chicago Bears — Caleb Williams QB, USC
Contract: US$39Million. The USC star earned US$10M through NIL deals while in college. Major brand partners have included Dr Pepper, Nissan, Wendy’s, Postmates and Topps - all of which have benefited from the more than 500,000 social media followers Williams boasts.

2. Washington Commanders — Jayden Daniels QB, LSU
Contract: US$37M. The 2023 Heisman Trophy winner soared up NFL draft boards while leading LSU to a 10–3 record in the regular season. Along the way, and since leaving school, he’s racked up deals with Raising Cane’s, Bisquick, Neiman Marcus, Beats by Dre and Powerade.

3. New England Patriots — Drake Maye QB, UNC

Contract: US$36M. After the UNC standout’s successful 2022 season, a rival ACC coach claimed two schools offered Maye US$5M in NIL money to transfer. Still, Maye has put together an endorsement portfolio involving the likes of Raising Cane’s, Lowe’s and Bose.

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 24 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Tuesday morning 30 April 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.

In rugby union: Mick Byrne and his boys must try and win at least one of three away games to stay in the Top 8 or to make a late charge into the Top 4.

Their remaining games are:
· Brumbies in Canberra 04 May at 9.35PM
· Western Force in Perth 11 May
· Reds in Suva 18 May
· Highlanders in Dunedin 26 May
· Rebels in Lautoka on 01 June

Their best bet of a win has to be against the Force, Reds or the Rebels.

In rugby league: Sydney Roosters star Luke Keary has made the shock decision to retire at the end of the season.

The 32-year-old only re-signed with the Roosters in February on a one-year extension for 2025, but has had a change of heart.

FOX Sports reports Keary informed his teammates after the Roosters’ 60-18 win over the Dragons on Anzac Day.

He did not want any fanfare so Keary made a formal pre-recorded announcement via a statement to the public last night.

In football: Arsenal tripped up Tottenham 2-3 at home in their North London derby. Spurs currently sit fifth on the Premier League ladder, seven points off Aston Villa – and with a goal differential six worse – but with two games in hand.

In combat sports: Aussie champ Tim Tszyu had little choice but to accept the highly risky fight against new KO King Daniel Ortiz Jr in August, after his recent loss in Las Vegas.

Tszyu will lose everything if he does not upset Ortiz.

In SportsBiz: In the NFL Draft 2024: An amazing 15% of the first 20 picks were Pacific Islanders:
1. Chicago Bears — Caleb Williams QB, USC
2. Washington Commanders — Jayden Daniels QB, LSU
3. New England Patriots — Drake Maye QB, UNC
4. Arizona Cardinals — Marvin Harrison Jr. Ohio State
5. Los Angeles Chargers — Joe Alt, Notre Dame
14. New Orleans Saints — Taliese Fuaga, Oregon State
15. Indianapolis Colts — Laiatu Latu, UCLA
20. Pittsburgh Steelers — Troy Fautanu, Washington

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 23 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Monday morning 29 April 2024.   Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.                                                                    In rugby union: So the Fijiana Drua lost their Super W title to the Wallaroos-stacked NSW Waratahs in Brisbane yesterday. The Australian Rugby Union made sure they weren’t going to be embarrassed three years in a row by stacking their team with 13 Aussie women’s reps.   Anyway, our Fiji girls can take a bow, they woke up Australian women’s rugby from their slumber and play the most exciting brand of rugby by far.   Now that they slow roasted Moana Pasifika at Churchill Park last Saturday, Mick Byrne and his boys must try and win at least one of three away games to stay in the Top 8 or at least climb into the Top 4.   Their remaining games are: ·       Brumbies in Canberra 04 May ·       Western Force in Perth 11 May ·       Reds in Suva 18 May ·       Highlanders in Dunedin 26 May ·       Rebels in Lautoka on 01 June   In Australian Super W netball: The Giants are wallowing in their equal-worst start to Super Netball, suffering a third loss 44-63, going down to the top-of-the-table Melbourne Vixens at Ken Rosewall Arena yesterday afternoon. Meanwhile, up north the NSW Swifts earned bragging rights over the Queensland Firebirds in Super Netball’s version of State of Origin, in a 77-73 point extra time thriller. In rugby league: The Sharks spoiled Ricky Stuart’s 500th NRL game as Coach with a dominant 40-0 win to move to the top of the NRL ladder. Earlier in Sydney, Adam Reynolds produced one of the greatest intercepts ever as he and Reece Walsh succumbed to bad cramping in farcical scenes late in the Broncos’ 34-10 win over the Tigers. Reynolds could barely walk with three minutes to play, but somehow managed to produce an intercept, before falling over and offloading the ball. The Storm sealed their sixth win of the season — and fourth on the trot — after a 54-20 annihilation of the Rabbitohs, who have slumped to the bottom of the ladder. In SportsBiz: Detroit is hosting the NFL draft. The event is projected to attract more than 300,000 fans to one of the largest sporting events to ever hit the Motor City.  Last year’s draft drew a total audience of 54.4 million viewers across mainstream TV and social media. In football: Liverpool’s Premier League title bid suffered a devastating blow after Jurgen Klopp’s side were beaten 2-0 by Merseyside rivals Everton at Goodison Park for the first time in 14 years, in a brutal setback to their hopes of catching leaders Arsenal. Meanwhile Man U spared Erik10’s blushes with a 4-2 win over lowly Sheffield United yesterday morning. Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 22 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Thursday morning 25 April 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.

In rugby union: All eyes are on the Fijiana Drua defending their Super W title against the NSW Waratahs in Brisbane on Sunday.

Can the Aussie chicks stop Atelaite Buna? How will they counter her speed and surprise raids sliding into the Fijiana backline from Fullback?

Meanwhile, Mick Byrne says his Drua boys must win with a bonus point against Moana Pasifika in Lautoka on Saturday.

In rugby league: Watch out for the Wayne Bennett factor.

Brad Arthur is a good Coach and a good man but the question remains after 11 seasons, five finals series, but no NRL premierships, is he still the right Coach to lead the Eels?

Because with South Sydney also in freefall, anchored to the bottom of the NRL ladder, and with co-owner Russell Crowe now back in Australia, there’s every chance Wayne Bennett might not be available come October when he becomes a free agent.

In SportsBiz: The average viewership during the opening weekend of the NBA playoffs games at 3.77 million viewers across ABC, ESPN, TNT and truTV compares to 4.15 million last year, which was the most-watched opening weekend since 2011, according to Sports Media Watch.

This 9% drop is the first postseason without the Warriors in the first round since 2021.

In football: Sky Sports, the BBC and The Times are all reporting that Feyenoord Coach Arne Slot is the leading contender to succeed Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool Manager.

Slot, 45, led Feyenoord to their first league title in six years last season and won the Dutch Cup on Sunday.

Slot was front runner to take over at Tottenham a year ago before ruling himself out of contention.

Finally, in combat sports: Nikita Tszyu has successfully defended his Australian Super Welterweight title for the first time after dominating Danilo Creati last night.

The younger bro of Tim Tszyu didn’t have it completely his own way, as after a dominant first five rounds, he was left wobbly for a lengthy period of the sixth.

But Nikita got back on track from there and while Creati bravely went the distance despite copping heavy shots Tszyu acknowledged his courage, “He can honestly take a shot. I thought I hurt him early ... but he just kept going,” Tszyu said.

And that’s a wrap!

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 21 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Wednesday morning 24 April 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.

In rugby union: All eyes are on the Fijiana Drua defending their title for the third straight year; this time against the NSW Waratahs in the Super W Final, and no doubt once again it will be in a mainly empty stadium in Brisbane on Sunday, except for Fijian fans – so why not hold it in Fiji?

In rugby league: NRL ANZAC Round - watch out for Melbourne Storm hosting South Sydney tomorrow at 7:50pm at AAMI Park. The Storm got the job done against the Roosters last week and so Craig Bellamy has resisted making any changes.

In a huge return for the Rabbitohs, Damien Cook has been named to start in the No.9 jersey.
In SportsBiz: Michael Jordan’s young tenure as a NASCAR team owner is already more successful than his time owning an NBA team.

Tyler Reddick’s victory at Talladega on Sunday marked the first time “His Airness” was in attendance for a race won by one of the drivers at his majority-owned 23XI Racing, which launched in 2021.

“This is, to me, like an NBA playoff game,” Jordan said on Fox Sports from Victory Lane.
In total, 23XI has won six NASCAR Cup Series races on the backs of Reddick, Bubba Wallace, and former team member Kurt Busch.

In football: While all eyes are on the battle at the top of the Premier League, The Championship - one rung below on the English football pyramid, is home to a host of fallen giants in a four-horse race for automatic promotion, which is awarded to the top two teams: 1st Leicester City on 91 pts, 2nd Leeds United on 90, 3rd Ipswich Town 89 and 4th Southampton 84 points.

Only in America: Scottie Scheffler just backed up his second Masters victory with a win at the US$20Million RBC Heritage event on the PGA Tour, good for his fourth victory in his last five starts.

On Sunday, Nelly Korda won the Chevron Championship, the first women’s major of the year, and her fifth tournament in a row, a feat not accomplished since Annika Sorenstam in 2005.

But it’s the pay gap thing that is so noticeable: Scheffler is soaring over Korda’s earnings so far on the LPGA, earning US$18.69M in prize money so far this year, compared to Korda’s $2.42M.

Finally, in combat sports: How smart is Ryan Garcia?

Garcia claims to have earned over US$50Million from his clash with Devin Haney, combining prize money, pay-per-view shares, and sponsorship deals.

These figures are unconfirmed but plausible given the additional revenue from estimated high volume PPV sales.

“I will let God guide me on how to use this money Amen,” Ryan Garcia celebrated his financial success, with reports surfacing that Garcia had placed a US$2Million bet on himself to win, earning a US$12M payout.

Garcia commented on social media, “If you’re going to bet, bet on yourself.”

While such actions are prohibited in organizations like the UFC, the world of boxing does not have these restrictions, though the rules vary by state.

His previous bout against Gervonta Davis also fetched around US$30M, with substantial earnings from PPV sales as well.

The Garcia vs. Haney fight is rumored to have performed well in PPV sales, with official figures expected soon.

Money! Money! Money!

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 20 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Tuesday morning 23 April 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.

In rugby union: All eyes are on the amazing Fijiana Drua defending their title against the NSW Waratahs in the Super W Final in Brisbane on Sunday.

Last time they played was in Round 2 in Sydney where the NSW chics posted ten tries on the Fijian girls in a 62-21 absolute pasting.

So who will win this time around?

Meanwhile Mick Byrne and his Fijian Drua boys also face a must-win game against the resurgent Moana Pasifika in Lautoka on Saturday.

In rugby league: Sydney Roosters superstar Joey Manu could be set for an NRL return after his stint in Japanese rugby union as early as Round 12 of the 2025 NRL season.
According to The Daily Telegraph, Manu’s contract with Toyota Verblitz only runs for one rugby union season which runs from early December until late May.

Therefore, Manu will be free to sign with the Tricolours or any other NRL Club, midway through the2025 NRL season.

So the Roosters will reportedly save A$500,000 in their salary cap for next season ready to pay for Manu for half the season.

In SportsBiz: The NBA playoffs are underway, but Monday marks the end of the NBA’s exclusive negotiating window with the parent companies of incumbent broadcasters ESPN and TNT, meaning that come midnight, other bidders can officially present offers for new deals that will start at the beginning of the 2025–26 season.

Through its nine-year, US$24Billion deals with ESPN and TNT, the NBA has been bringing in almost US$2.7B annually.

The league just had its most-watched regular season in four years, averaging an audience of 1.04 million across ABC, ESPN, TNT, and NBA TV, a 1% increase from last season.

So, what will the next deals yield?

In 2021, CNBC reported that the NBA would be seeking US$75B, but league officials pushed back on that number privately.

Deals that total even US$50B, depending on their length, would see the NBA double its current intake.

In football: “It’s very sad,” Manchester United Manager Erik ten Hag, speaking about the removal of replay matches during the FA Cup, where smaller Clubs have seen big financial windfalls when they secure draws on the road against big Premier League Clubs, and in turn get to host those giants at home in front of their local fans.

FA Cup games tied at the end of regulation time, must now be decided either in extra-time or penalty kicks – no more replays.

Meanwhile, Man U beat Coventry 2-4 on penalties in an FA Cup classic on Sunday after the teams were level at 3-3 after extra-time, setting up a second straight FA Cup final against Man City.

In combat sports: Now that their fight is over, and Ryan Garcia beat up Devin Haney in New York so easily, knocking him down three times in a majority points decision over 12 rounds, everyone is calling Garcia a genius for his crazy antics and erratic behavior before the fight, completely catching Haney off guard!

Finally, only in America: David Beckham is suing actor Mark Wahlberg for US$10.5Million, claiming the Hollywood star “duped” the England football legend into working as a brand ambassador for Wahlberg’s F45 fitness brand.

Beckham agreed to be the firm’s global ambassador for free shares when he moved to LA, where he and Wahlberg became friends.

Apparently, Wahlberg held off releasing the free chares to Beckham while the stocks were flying! And only did so when they collapsed post-COVID!

And that’s a wrap!

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 19 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Monday morning 22 April 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.

In rugby union: The World Rugby 7s Repechage in Monaco in June, ahead of the final qualifying tournament for the Paris Olympics rugby 7s men’s competition, features Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Great Britain, Hong Kong, Mexico, Papua New Guinea, South Africa, Spain, Tonga and Uganda.

The women’s comp will feature Argentina, China, Czechia, Hong Kong China, Kenya, Jamaica, Mexico, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Poland, Samoa and Uganda.

In rugby league: The Sharks have delivered a stellar performance to down the Cowboys in brutal fashion, beating them 42-6 at Sharks Park.

Will Kennedy was awarded the Paul Green Medal for Player of the Match.

Cronulla have now taken top spot on the NRL ladder after seven rounds, with the Storm and Dolphins in second and third.

In football: Arsenal shrugged off the disappointment of their Champions League exit to move back to the top of the Premier League with a 2-0 win at Wolves yesterday.

Leandro Trossard and Martin Odegaard struck at the end of each half to take the Gunners one point clear of Manchester City, who have a game in hand.

In Netball: The Learning Centre Primary School Under-9 netball team in Fiji, featuring Tulia Waqavonovono at GD, Islarose Savu at GA and sharpshooter Vika Waqavakatoga at GS, has made the semifinals of the Suva Netball Competition for the first time in their history this weekend, after they beat one of the favourites, Veiuto Primary School last Saturday morning.

In combat sports: Ryan Garcia comprehensively beat up Devin Haney in their fight in Brooklyn, New York yesterday, knocking the previously unbeaten American down three times on his way to a majority points decision over 12 rounds, but Haney’s WBC world title belt was not on the line, due to Garcia being over weight by 1.5Kg so it is now vacant.

And that’s a wrap!

21-04-2024 Breakfast Bites FIJI & PACIFIC SPORTS NEWS Podcast S09E18 #TeivovoSports #TeivovoDigital

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 18 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Sunday morning 21 April 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.

In rugby union: Japan won the World Rugby Pacific Challenge 2024 following a 65-15 thrashing of Tonga A at Apia Park on Saturday.

It was their third straight bonus-point win of the tournament having earlier beaten Samoa 5-48 and defending champions Fiji Warriors 43-45.

The Fijians, coached by Senirusi Seruvakula came second after a 43-18 victory over Samoa A in their final match.

The World Rugby-funded tournament features predominantly under-23 residential players.
In rugby league: Reece Walsh was on fire with a classy double, while Jamal Fogarty suffered a suspected ruptured bicep in the Broncos 34-10 win over the Raiders at Suncorp Stadium.

The Kiwi star finished with 140M run, a whopping nine tackle busts, three line breaks and two tries in another brilliant display.

Kangaroos Coach Mal Meninga was overflowing with praise for Walsh: “Honestly we’ve already said it all before about him, but just his speed, his deception, his deception off the ball and his great evasive skills. He’s the complete package,” Meninga said.

In football: Bernardo Silva made amends for his midweek penalty miss as holders Manchester City returned to the FA Cup final with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Chelsea.

Silva badly fluffed his lines as City were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League on penalties by Real Madrid on Wednesday but he fired the match winner as they bounced back at Wembley.

The Portugal international turned home the only goal of a tight encounter six minutes from time, to keep alive City’s hopes of retaining the domestic double.

In SportsBiz: Netflix is ending its customary quarterly reporting of subscriber totals.
The publicly traded streaming giant said that it will no longer disclose those subscriber numbers, starting with the first quarter of 2025, and will instead focus on other financial metrics such as revenue and operating margin.

The shift jolted Wall Street, prompting a 7% drop in Netflix shares in trading through Friday.
Netflix already has the largest subscriber base in the industry, reaching 269.6 million globally in its last quarter, a figure 16% higher than a year ago.

Company officials say a continued focus on subscriber totals is not in line with its growth into a more mature company, that is developing additional revenue sources, such as advertising.

In combat sports: Ryan Garcia weighed in a whopping 1.45Kg over the Super Lightweight limit for his WBC world title fight with unbeaten Devin Haney at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York today.

After missing weight, Garcia chugged a beer at the weigh-in, later claiming it was apple juice and sparkling water, and took to social media to bizarrely hint he deliberately missed weight.
“I feel great and I got a 3-pound advantage,” Garcia wrote. “Winners do what they have to do I’m still sharp.”

At yesterday’s final press conference Garcia was baited by Haney into accepting a bet to pay US$500,000 for every pound he weighed in over the limit – Haney has since confirmed that Garcia has honoured his US$1.5Million bet.

Last minute negotiations ensured the fight will go ahead, but Haney’s WBC world title belt is no longer on the line. Should he lose, the belt will instead become vacant.

And that’s a wrap!

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 17 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Saturday morning 20 April 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.

In rugby union: Team Fijiana and Atelaite “Buna the Bullet” burned the Western Force in their semifinal in Suva yesterday to a packed out HFC Stadium with the flying fullback scoring three wonderful tries in their 25-14 win to make a third final three years in a row.

Later, the Fijian Drua had the measure of the Hurricanes for most of their game, but too much individualism in front of their home fans saw them fail to nail key try-scoring opportunities for the Hurricanes 38-15 win.

In football: Despite a Mohamad Salah penalty for a 1-0 win last night, Liverpool crashed out of the Europa League after losing 1-3 on aggregate to Italian Club Atalanta, after they stunned Anfield with a 3-0 win last week, in Liverpool’s first home defeat in all competitions for 14 months.

In SportsBiz: Caitlin Clark is expected to transform the WNBA, so it was jarring when it was revealed she’d receive US$76,000 in the first year of her rookie deal.

Her four-year contract is worth US$338,000 under the WNBA collective bargaining agreement.
In contrast, the next number one NBA pick will receive US$10.5Million in their first year, 137 times the WNBA wage.

People are pissed. There’s lots of conversation about fairness and pay gaps, even the US President Joe Biden tweeted about it.

The NBA annual revenue is US$9.6Billion, while the WNBA is US$199M.

The NBA teams play an 82-game home and away season, while the WNBA schedule is 40 fixtures.

Many will argue this is about economics as much as gender.

They might rightfully point to the fact the NBA has had fifty extra years to become a multi-billion-dollar business.

It’s going to take time.

Though when the NBA was the same age as the WNBA is right now, in 1974, the number one pick was Bill Walton, who signed a five-year deal reported to be worth US$2M.

In rugby league: The Eels shot out to an 8-0 lead 26 minutes into the game with Shaun Lane and Will Penisini scoring after a scrappy start from both sides in hot and humid conditions at TIO Stadium, Darwin.

Then the Dolphins embarrassed Brad Arthur in a 44-16 carve-up with a nine-try onslaught to leave Parramatta fans completely shell-shocked.

In combat sports: Ryan Garcia has unloaded at a heckler in a stunning, foul-mouthed rant while also agreeing to a US$500,000 bet with Devin Haney ahead of their WBC Junior Middleweight title fight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on Sunday.

After Garcia dropped his fair share of expletives, Haney told reporters later: “There’s something wrong with him. I don’t know what’s going on, but that shit is not normal. We all know that.”

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 16 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Friday morning 19 April 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.

In rugby union: It is D-day for Mo Rauluini and Team Fijiana today as they take on the Western Force in their semifinal at 4.35pm.

Later, the Fijian Drua play the unbeaten Hurricanes, led by 19 year old flyhalf Isikeli Rabitu, with Captain Tevita Ikanivere, Isoa Nasilasila returning at lock, and a dynamic loose trio of Miramira, Salawa and Elia Canakaivata to do battle against the powerful Hurricanes pack, where the game will be won or lost.

Simi Kuruvoli gets his chance to star at halfback, with the dependable Kemu Valetini inside Iosefo Masi, plus Momo, Ravutaumada and Droasese at the back.

In the WNBA: According to The Athletic, Caitlin Clark will receive a signature shoe deal, with Under Armour and Adidas making “sizable offers”.

Another report values her Nike shoe deal offer at US$1Million upfront and collectively it is in the US$10M range.

Clark’s last shoe sponsorship deal which ended after she finished college, was with Nike.

In football: Big news from the UEFA Champions League with top Premier League Clubs - Man City beaten on penalties by Real Madrid 4-3 and Bayern Munich 1-0 Arsenal in their quarter-finals yesterday, so it’s down to PSG vs Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid in the Top 4.
In SportsBiz: Star Striker Maria Sanchez, who four months ago signed a then-US National Women’s Soccer League record US$1.5Million contract, has requested a trade, sources tell ESPN.
Through four games so far this season, Sanchez has yet to score a goal, and Houston is in 11th place in the league.
In rugby league: In a blockbuster clash between the Storm and the Roosters at Allianz Stadium in Sydney last night, Michael Jennings and Joey Manu scored for the Sydney mob, but Craig Bellamy’s side secured an 18-12 win thanks to a late length-of-the-field try, finished off by X-factor Coates.

In combat sports: The Rock has vowed revenge against The Undertaker after he got involved in the main event of WrestleMania 40 where Cody Rhodes defeated Roman Reigns after a handful of stars came to his aid to balance the numbers.

The Rock vows that he will return to face Rhodes once again - taking to social media to assert his desire for revenge against The Undertaker after his surprise attack on the "Final Boss": "The guy sure knows how to ruin a party. I'll see you down the road, my friend.

Payback's a b**** for you — but fun for me. — Final Boss," said The Rock via X.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.

In rugby union: The Fijian Drua team to face the unbeaten Hurricanes in Suva tomorrow will be led by 19 year old flyhalf Isikeli Rabitu: 1 Haereiti Hetet, 2 Tevita Ikanivere (c), 3 Mesake Doge, 4 Isoa Nasilasila, 5 Leone Ratuisolia, 6 Vilive Miramira, 7 Kitione Salawa, 8 Elia Canakaivata, 9 Simi Kuruvoli, 10 Isikeli Rabitu, 11 Epeli Momo, 12 Kemu Valetini, 13 Iosefo Masi, 14 Selestino Ravutaumada & 15 Ilaisa Droasese.

In the NBA: The Team USA Basketball Roster for the Paris Olympic Games, according to ESPN: LeBron James (Lakers), Steph Curry (Warriors), Kevin Durant (Suns), Joel Embiid (76ers), Anthony Davis (Lakers), Devin Booker (Suns), Anthony Edwards (Timberwolves), Jayson Tatum (Celtics), Jrue Holiday (Celtics), Bam Adebayo (Heat), Tyrese Haliburton (Pacers) & Kahwi Leonard (Clippers).

In football: So we have our first UEFA Champions League Top 4 qualifiers now after PSG 4-1 Barcelona with only eight players in the end & Mbappe scoring a double, while Borussia Dortmund 4-2 Atletico Madrid in Germany.

This morning, Man City hosts Harry Kane & Bayern Munich while Real Madrid entertain Arsenal in Spain.

In SportsBiz: Sunday’s final round TV viewership of The Masters, which saw Scottie Scheffler run away from the field to win his second green jacket by four strokes, drew a surprisingly small audience of only 9.6 million viewers.

Down almost 21% from last year’s 12.1 million final-round audience.

In rugby league: BREAKING NEWS: Penrith Panthers enforcer James Fisher-Harris has been granted a release from the remaining two years of his deal to join the New Zealand Warriors in a bombshell switch.

Fisher-Harris, a New Zealand international, will link up with the Warriors in 2025 on a four-year deal.

The forward was granted permission to join the NZ Warriors after requesting a return to his home nation on compassionate grounds so he could be closer to his family.

Only in America: Is that all she’ll get?

That was the overwhelming response to basketball fans realising Caitlin Clark will earn just US$76,570 in her first season as a professional player, after she was first pick in the WNBA Draft on Tuesday, amid expectations she will have a transformative effect on women’s professional basketball.

Clark will earn US$339,000 over four years, per the league’s collective bargaining agreement.

In comparison, top WNBA players earn more than US$1Million for a season in the Chinese or Russian Women’s Basketball competitions.

Clark will make significantly more money from endorsements, which already include Nike, Gatorade, State Farm & Panini.

She recently declined a US$5M offer to play in the BIG 3 league.

Even US President Joe Biden weighed in: “Women in sports continue to push new boundaries & inspire us all.

“But right now we’re seeing that even if you’re the best, women are not paid their fair share.

“It’s time that we give our daughters the same opportunities as our sons & ensure women are paid what they deserve,” President Biden posted on X.

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 14 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Wednesday morning 17 April 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.

In rugby union: Fijian Drua Head Coach, Mick Byrne has been officially announced as the new Head Coach of the Flying Fijians and we say a big congratulations Mick, for this overdue, much anticipated and already well known news.

We believe that right now, the tall Aussie is the right man for the job, so that he can enhance and set in stone, his influence and blend of positive, running rugby that he has re-introduced and polished with the Fijian Drua.

In Football: Bayer Leverkusen lifted the Bundesliga title for the first time in their 120-year history on Sunday with five games to spare.

A 5-0 win by Xabi Alonso’s team over Werder Bremen breaking Bayern Munich’s 11-year stranglehold on the German top flight.

In Surfing: World surfing icon and 11-time world Champion Kelly Slater, who has dominated surfing unlike anyone else over three decades, is hoping for one final surf on the World Surf League Tour at Cloud Break in Fiji, before heading off into the sunset.

“I have put in for a wildcard for Fiji and we’ll see how that goes,” he said.

In SportsBiz: One of the fiercest critics of the Saudi Arabian-backed LIV Tour, firmly backing the PGA Tour, golf superstar Rory McIlroy has been linked with a bombshell US$850Million deal to join LIV Golf.

Multiple reports say that the four-time major winner is considering a move to join LIV.

In rugby league: The Sydney Roosters have confirmed Joey Manu will depart the Club at the end of the 2024 season, joining Japanese rugby club Toyota Verblitz in a deal reportedly worth more than A$1Million per-season.

The 27-year-old Kiwi international has played 164 games for the Roosters to date across nine seasons, winning two premierships in 2018 and 2019 and having made his NRL debut in 2016.

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 13 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Tuesday morning 16 April 2024.   Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.                                                                    Starting with sports romance: Aussie Matildas star Mary Fowler and NRL superstar Nathan Cleary have stepped up their relationship. While their romance has been no secret, Fowler took things to another level yesterday with a major upload to her Instagram account. She posted nine photos with a black and white photo of her and Cleary leading the way. He then followed suit on his social media sites. In UFC: Conor McGregor is officially back.   Speaking after UFC300 in Las Vegas, UFC President Dana White confirmed McGregor will be returning against Michael Chandler at UFC303 on 30 June at T Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. In SportsBiz: Scottie Scheffler won the Masters on Sunday, taking home his second green jacket and the US$3.6Million winner’s cheque out of a tournament record purse of US$20M this year. Already ranked No. 1 in the world, the victory - his third in the last four tournaments he’s played - further cements Scheffler atop the golf world, and takes his earnings this season to more than US$15M. But don’t expect much to change off the course for the soft spoken and even-keeled Scheffler, whose current endorsement portfolio includes: Nike apparel, TaylorMade golf clubs, Titleist golf balls, Rolex and NetJets. In rugby league: What a joke!   Some cracking rugby league over the weekend, but no question the biggest story remains what’s going on at South Sydney?   The idea that nobody at the Rabbitohs knew that a multi-millionaire fan of the Club secretly approached Kangaroos boss Mal Meninga about being parachuted in as a caretaker coach is almost too funny for words. Only in America: OJ Simpson, the former American football star at the centre of a double-murder trial that the US media called "the trial of the century", three decades ago, has died of cancer aged 76 his family posted on social media. Simpson was acquitted in a sensational 1995 trial of murdering his former wife and her friend, but was found responsible for their deaths in a civil lawsuit and was later imprisoned for armed robbery and kidnapping.  And that’s a wrap!

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 12 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Monday morning 15 April 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.

In Super Netball in Australia: The Sunshine Coast Lightning are the Round One talking point after they delivered a slick 16-goal win against last season’s runners-up, the NSW Swifts 63-79, who many tipped to be premiers in 2024.
And in the second match of the day, the Vixens claimed their inaugural Melbourne derby against new cross-town rivals the Mavericks 61-68.
In SportsBiz: World Athletics, the governing body for track and field, will award US$50,000 to each gold medalist at the upcoming Summer Olympic Games in Paris as part of a US$2.4Million total prize pool covering 48 events.
The prize money will be extended to winners of silver and bronze medals at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, dramatically reversing more than a century of history where most Olympic athletes were amateurs.
This also makes World Athletics the first international federation to offer Olympics prize money.
In rugby league: The Canberra Raiders nailed a 21-20 golden point win over the unlucky Gold Coast Titans.

Under-pressure South Sydney Head Coach Jason Demetriou expects to still be in the job next week against the Melbourne Storm after their bye round, despite the Bunnies 22-34 loss to the Cronulla Sharks on Saturday.

“Nobody has told me otherwise,” he told reporters, “So we’ll just turn up and see.”

Manly and the NZ Warriors played out the first draw of the 2024 NRL season, finishing deadlocked at 22 all in Auckland on Saturday.

And only in America: Every decade or so, a new sports star streaks across the landscape, someone who’s able to not only attract hard-core sports viewers but casual ones eager to witness what all the fuss is about.
Think Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods or Patrick Mahomes. They just play the game differently. They do things you’ve never seen before. Win or lose, they’re ratings magnets.
That’s Caitlin Clark.
Consider: ABC/ESPN’s 18.9 million average viewers for Iowa vs. South Carolina nearly doubled the record 9.9 million for last year’s game.
And at The Masters: Tiger Woods still draws the biggest gallery at Augusta, despite languishing 60th on the leader board.
Top-ranked Scottie Scheffler holds a one-shot lead heading into the final round, with Collin Morikawa just one stroke back after shooting a three-under 69 on Sunday to move ahead of Max Homa (-5), Ludvig Åberg (-4) and Bryson DeChambeau (-3) in the Top 5.
Other notable players, Ryan Fox, son of Grant is in 21st spot, cousin Tony Finau is in 37, Vijay Singh is 58th two spots ahead of Tiger.
And that’s a wrap!

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 11 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Saturday morning 13 April 2024.                                                                    Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent.    In rugby: Will Harrison converted a pressure penalty after the final hooter to level the scores 40-40.   He then nailed a drop goal in sudden death for the NSW Waratahs to snap a five-game losing streak and beat the Crusaders in a thriller last night that saw the lead change 12 times at Sydney's Allianz Stadium.   And another good win for Moana Pasifika in Whangarei, New Zealand yesterday 18-15 over the Reds, albeit after two of the Queensland players were shown their colours.   In Football: Italian Club Atalanta stunned Anfield with a 3-0 win, to leave Liverpool with a mountain to climb to reach the Europa League semi-finals.   It was Liverpool’s first home defeat in all competitions for 14 months. “I have nothing positive to say about the game,” said J Klopp. In SportsBiz: Caitlin Clark will leave college basketball without a national championship, but she achieved something nearly as historic: Due to her star power, the NCAA’s women’s college basketball championship grabbed a bigger TV audience than the men’s championship for the first time. Thanks to Caitlin Clark ABC/ESPN’s 18.9 million average viewers for Iowa vs. South Carolina outpaced the 14.8 million viewers for TNT/TBS/truTV’s coverage of the UConn vs. Purdue men’s championship according to Nielsen. More on Caitlin Clark? The WNBA has announced that 36 out of 40 Indiana Fever games this season will be on national television. Indiana holds the top pick in the upcoming WNBA draft and is expected to select the Iowa College basketball superstar. In rugby league: The Eels have landed a huge coup, with Dragons star Zac Lomax set to sign a bumper contract worth A$2.6Million to join Brad Arthur & sons. According to the SMH, Lomax’s fresh deal will span over four years. Lomax was granted a release from the final two years of his St George contract last week, freeing him up to sign with the Eels for 2025 and beyond. At The Masters: Tiger Woods was one of 27 players unable to complete their first round on the opening day of The Masters, with play delayed due to rain.   He was one-under par through 13 holes when the first round was halted - meaning he has to play 23 holes today to finish his first round and complete his second. Woods is attempting to make the cut for a 24th-consecutive appearance at Augusta, which would be a new record. Meanwhile, his playing partner Max Homa finished with an impressive six-under 67 - to sit second after the first-round, one shot behind Bryson DeChambeau’s seven-under.   Finally, only in America: Previously considered one of baseball superstar Shoshei Ohtani’s closest friends – his former interpreter Ippei Mizuhara could receive a fine of up to US$1Million and/or 30 years in prison. Among the key details in the federal case against Mizuhara: · He generated a total of US$142.3Million in winning bets and US$182.9M in losing ones and so amassed a gambling debt of nearly US$41M.  · His average bet was about US$12,800, and over two years he placed an average of 25 bets per day. Is that a betting addiction or what? · Mizuhara allegedly joked at one point to a bookmaker in 2022, “I’m terrible at this sport betting thing, huh? LOL. Technically, I did steal from Ohtani,” Mizuhara is alleged to have told the bookmaker later. “It’s all over for me.” And me, and that’s a wrap!

In SportsBiz: She isn’t even drafted yet, but the Las Vegas Aces are moving their game against the Indiana Fever on July 2 from the Michelob Ultra Arena which has 12,000 seats to T-Mobile Arena with its 20,000 seats to accommodate the matchup against Iowa star Caitlin Clark, who has yet to even be drafted in the WNBA.

In rugby league, and in more BREAKING NEWS: Mal Meninga no less is the Coach the South Sydney Board wants to replace current boss, Jason Demetriou when they sack him after the Cronulla Sharks game this weekend.

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 08 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Wednesday morning 10 April 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent.

In rugby: Some social media rugby experts are blaming one-sided match officials for picking on the Fijian Drua and frustrating players as the main reason for their big loss to the Melbourne Rebels last weekend.

Well I beg to differ and say rubbish! No matter what happens on-field, there is no place for player indiscipline and striking out against opposition players.

In Football: Anonymous online supporters of the Islamic terror group ISIS have issued a threat to soccer stadiums across Europe ahead of major games in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League being played this morning.

A post disseminated this week by the pro-ISIS online media outlet Al Azaim Foundation showed graphic imagery of a gunman in a balaclava, with the message, "Kill them all," in large text.
The post lists Paris's Parc de Prince and Madrid's Santiago Bernabéu as targets.

Yesterday Real Madrid and Manchester City drew 3-3 without incident and Arsenal drew 2-2 with Bayern Munich in Germany.

In SportsBiz: With Caitlin Clark being the biggest story in sports, TV ratings for the finals title game, where South Carolina beat her team Iowa 75-87, peaked at a whopping 24 million and averaged 18.7 million TV viewers.

ESPN said it was the most watched basketball game since 2019, beating the ratings for every sporting event outside of football and the Olympics in that period.

In rugby league: “Lord Nelson” Asofa-Solomona has been listed on the extended bench, and could be a late inclusion to play his first NRL game for the season in the Melbourne Storm versus Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs at AAMI Park, 6pm on Friday night.

In WWE Wrestling: The WWE finally gave the fans what they wanted.

Cody Rhodes ended Roman Reigns’ historic 1316-day run as World Champion to conclude WrestleMania XL.

Unsurprisingly the match, contested under ‘Bloodline Rules’ - aka no disqualifications - featured a heavy dosage of interference, with Rhodes’ friends, and also some with little to do with him, helping him overcome Reigns’ allies, including “The Rock”.

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 07 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Tuesday morning 09 April 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent.

In rugby: It was a double Kiwi delight as the curtain came down on a sensational Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong 7s in front of a 40,000 strong sell-out crowd yesterday.

New Zealand beat USA 36-7 in the Women’s final to top the Series standings with one tournament remaining in Singapore. Australia 24-21 France for bronze.
Meanwhile the All Blacks 7s won the Men’s final 10-7 against France for their first SVNS title of the season. Ireland 14-5 Australia for bronze.
In the Women’s semi-finals Australia 14-28 New Zealand, while USA 19-5 France. And in the Men’s semis Ireland 10-26 France and Australia 7-26 New Zealand.
Fiji beat South Africa 14-33 and Fijiana 19-15 Canada so both finished in fifth place.
Argentina, smarting from not making the Cup competition in the Mother of all rugby 7s tournaments, whacked Samoa 42 nil for 9th place.

In Football: Liverpool were held to a damaging 2-2 draw by Manchester United as they handed the initiative to Arsenal in the Premier League title race, while Tottenham moved into fourth place with a 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest on Monday morning.

Tottenham’s 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest win moves them above Aston Villa on goal difference and they also hold a game in hand in the race to qualify for the Champions League via a top four finish.

This after Aston Villa drew 3-3 with Brentford.

In SportsBiz: Last Friday night, an average of 14.2 million people tuned in to a thrilling NCAA March Madness Women’s basketball semifinal between Iowa and UConn, which easily broke all established records and more, becoming the most-watched college basketball game on ESPN ever, college or pro, men’s or women’s.

Viewership on the final is yet to be confirmed, but expect it to pass 16 million.

All of which has left experts across the women’s basketball industry wondering: Were people perhaps right to criticize the US$920Million bundle signed in January with Disney, that values the Women’s basketball tournament at US$65M annually, twice its previous price?

In rugby league: South Sydney Coach Jason Demetriou is facing what is almost a “win-or-get-sacked” game against Cronulla next week as the Rabbitohs’s horror run of form threatens his job.

After a woeful 34-4 loss to the NZ Warriors last Saturday, there are multiple reports of just how close Rabbitohs directors are to swinging the axe.
The Daily Telegraph reports the situation will come to a head if Souths loses to the Sharks next week, a game where they’ll be without superstar fullback Latrell Mitchell following his three-week striking ban.
In WWE Wrestling: “The Rock” has made his long-awaited return to pro wrestling, helping cousin Roman Reigns prevail over Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins in the night one main event of WrestleMania XL.

Involved in his first true match since WrestleMania 29 some 11 years ago, the 51-year-old was in incredible physical condition as expected at a jam-packed open-air Lincoln Financial Field, home of the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles.

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 06 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Sunday morning 07 April 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent.

In rugby: The Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong 7s Men’s semi-finals feature Australia vs New Zealand, while USA play France in the Women’s semi-finals.
And no Fiji in the Men’s semis where Ireland vs France and Australia vs New Zealand as the 7s Series leaders, Argentina fail to make it out of their pool.
Earlier Fiji beat France 7-14 in their final pool game and in the Men’s Cup quarter-finals Ireland 24-19 USA, France 24-10 Spain, Australia 15-0 South Africa and New Zealand 19-12 Fiji.
So Fijiana plays Canada at 6.32pm, followed by Fiji versus South Africa at 7pm in a fifth place play-off today.
Samoa lost to South Africa 26-7 but bounced back for a good win over Great Britain 7-12. Samoa will be tested against Argentina at 3.40pm today.

In Football: Arsenal moved to the top of the Premier League as goals from Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and Leandro Trossard added the gloss to another clinical performance from the Gunners to beat Brighton 3-0 overnight.

Mikel Arteta's men edge one point clear of Liverpool, who face Manchester United later today.

In rugby league: The Dolphins secured an impressive 26-16 win over Wests Tigers at Suncorp Stadium yesterday, for Wayne Bennett to best his apprentice Benji Marshall, and move to the top of the NRL ladder undefeated after three straight wins.

In Boxing: Police are investigating an alleged incident involving Jon Jones after a drug-testing agent from Drug Free Sport filed a police report alleging that the UFC Heavyweight Champion assaulted her and threatened to kill her during a recent visit to his home to obtain his urine sample.

06-04-2024 Breakfast Bites FIJI & PACIFIC SPORTS NEWS Podcast S09E05 #TeivovoSports #TeivovoDigitalKia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 05 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Saturday morning 06 April 2024.                                                                    Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent.    In rugby: France, New Zealand, USA and South Africa sailed through to the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong 7s Men’s quarter-finals with perfect records on day one.   The All Blacks 7s beat Great Britain 7-12 and they have finally figured out Argentina; shutting down Los Pumas 22 zip in what was the key Men’s result on Day One.   All eyes were on Australia’s opening game as Michael Hooper made his 7s debut after 125 Test caps - including 69 as captain of the Wallabies to his name. Hooper got his 7s career off to a winning start 12-0 over Fiji, but Australia were later beaten 14-19 by France. In other results from yesterday: After their 12 nil loss to Australia, Fiji Men then trounced Canada 5-45 and so must beat France at 5.43pm today to make the QFs.   Team Fijiana also lost to Australia 19-12, but bounced back with a 24-7 win over South Africa. They play Ireland at 3.02pm later today.   Also in Hong Kong yesterday, Samoa 14-17 Spain, then they lost to Ireland 12-7 and their final pool game vs South Africa is at 2.16pm today.   In Football: Man U led 3-2 in the dying stages of second half stoppage time at Stamford Bridge and looked on course for a vital win.   But a moment of madness from United defender Diogo Dalot sparked a staggering four-minute collapse as Cole Palmer’s hat-trick secured a famous 4-3 win for Chelsea. In rugby league: The Bulldogs survived a stunning second-half comeback from the Sydney Roosters to hang on for a 30-26 win in wet and wild conditions at Accor Stadium last night.   It was a tale of two halves with the Dogs shooting out to a 26-nil lead in the first half, as the Roosters imploded with three star players gone - Dom Young was sent off, while Sam Walker and James Tedesco both failed HIAs. But the Tricolours came out after halftime a completely different side: Egan Butcher bagged a double, while Naufahu Whyte and Joseph Manu also crossed. Burton scored his third of the night, but the Roosters, who were down to 11 men by then, could not keep the pressure on, and the Bulldogs managed to hang on. In Boxing: Top promoter Eddie Hearn is adamant that Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury will easily earn at least £100million each from fighting one another later this year or early in 2025.   First though, there is the small matter of The Ukranian Warrior who The Gypsy King needs to deal with.   Finally in March Madness: The average resale listing price for the upcoming Women’s semifinals in Cleveland is US$1556, according to ticket aggregator TicketIQ, with an average get-in price of US$479, which has soared by more than 50% in the last four days after Iowa and Caitlin Clark—college basketball’s all-time scoring leader and currently the biggest star in the sport—defeated LSU in their regional finals.   In comparison, the average semifinals listing price for the men’s event is US$1422, with a get-in price of US$456. Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 04 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Friday morning 05 April 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent.

In rugby: At the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong 7s today: Fiji Men play Australia at 9.30pm, then Canada at 12.33am and France at 5.43pm on Saturday in their last pool game.

Team Fijiana plays Australia at 4.25pm today, followed by South Africa at 7.12pm, and they play Ireland at 3.02pm on Saturday.

Also in Hong Kong today at 3.16pm Samoa vs Spain, then they play Ireland at 6.49pm and their final pool game vs South Africa at 2.16pm tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the Melbourne Rebels may be saved by an 11th hour private equity cash injection that will see the bankrupt Super Rugby side relocate to Melbourne’s western suburbs where a 15,000-seat stadium is being built in Tarneit, and there share facilities with A-League side Western United.

A private equity-backed consortium led by former Qantas chairman and former CEO of Rio Tinto, Leigh Clifford says they’re close to raising A$30Million to invest in the struggling Rebels.

In SportsBiz: The Las Vegas Grand Prix has been hailed as the biggest sporting event in the history of Las Vegas.

The Clark County Commission’s debrief into Formula 1’s high-profile return to the city, reported the race was both the “largest sporting event with the largest global audience” in Las Vegas history and the most lucrative event ever held.

The total economic impact of the grand prix for Clark County weighed in at a staggering US$1.5Billion.

The bulk of that came directly from visitor spending, which totaled US$884Million.

Formula 1 fans were found to spend 3.6 times more than the ordinary Las Vegas tourist, staying 4.1 nights on average and shelling out more than US$4100 per trip — and that’s without the cost of the F1 ticket prices.

In rugby league: In a scintillating 11-try thriller at AAMI Park last night, the Melbourne Storm came from behind, scoring three times in the second half, including twice in the final five minutes, to snatch a heart-stopping 34-32 win over the Broncos.

While on the sidelines, the Dragons could potentially make a play for Nelson Asofa-Solomona after it was revealed the Melbourne Storm star has fallen out of favour at the club, after Lord Nelson returned for preseason training out of shape.

This explains why the big man is yet to feature for the Storm this season.

It comes after the Dragons reached an agreement with their disgruntled star Zac Lomax, which would see the final two years of his contract mutually terminated, freeing up A$800,000 a season.

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 03 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Wednesday morning 03 April 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent.

In rugby: Looks like the Wallabies rebuild under Kiwi Coach Joe Schmidt is starting off-field with renowned fellow Kiwi scrum doctor Mike Cron joining the Wallabies coaching staff.

Cron will bring a wealth of experience to Australia’s set-up, having been an All Blacks assistant coach for more than 200 Tests.

“Mike has added tremendous value in every program he has been involved with and brings a wealth of knowledge to our coaching group,” Wallabies Head Coach Schmidt said.

In football: The German Football Association (DFB) will change the typeface used on its shirts after one of the numbers “44” on its kit drew comparisons to the “Nazi SS” symbol.

The football association said in a statement: “None of the parties involved saw any proximity to Nazi symbolism in the creation process.”

The DFB caused a stir last month when it announced that it would be replacing ADIDAS as its kit provider from 2027.

The German outfitter, which has supplied the national team since the 1950s, will make way for US sportswear giant Nike.

In boxing: After advice from their lawyer, Sebastian Fundora’s camp now says it will honour a rematch agreement with Tim Tszyu despite initially suggesting the Australian would be made to wait for another crack at the new super middleweight champion.

But exactly who Tszyu fights next remains uncertain after the popular Australian poster boy lost his WBO Super Welterweight crown to Fundora in Las Vegas last weekend.

In rugby league: NRL Round 05: The Tigers are reportedly set to hand young gun Latu Fainu his NRL debut, replacing rookie sensation Lachie Galvin.

Broncos star Reece Walsh is training in headgear as the fullback readies for an earlier-than-expected return from a facial fracture.

The Storm, meanwhile, are set to welcome back star five-eighth Cameron Munster from injury and Jahrome Hughes from suspension for their clash with the Broncos tomorrow night at AAMI Park.

Meanwhile, a concussion to Josh Addo-Carr will see the Foxx miss the clash with the Sydney Roosters and star Bunnies Wing Alex Johnston is set for an extended stint on the sideline.

Finally in the USA: Remember the name Caitlin Clark.

The 22-year-old, who has already rewritten the college basketball record books, took another step to greatness yesterday with a blistering performance to lead Iowa to the Final Four of the NCAA tournament.

In a blockbuster rematch of last year’s NCAA championship game, the Iowa Hawkeyes defeated the LSU Tigers 87-94 in a thrilling match-up in Albany, New York.

Clark scored nearly half her team’s tally, finishing with 41 points, 12 assists and seven rebounds and nine three-pointers

For the first time in NCAA history, both the men’s and women’s teams for two schools have made their respective Final Fours: UConn and NC State.

Iowa’s victory keeps the Caitlin Clark train alive into another Final Four.
And that’s a wrap!

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 02 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Tuesday morning 02 April 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent.

In rugby: Rookie Fijian Drua flyhalf, Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula is making waves after another outstanding kicking game in atrocious conditions in Lautoka last Saturday.

Apart from his pin point kicking in general play, the rising young star slotted 16 points off the kicking tee to now sit just behind the All Blacks and Chiefs star, Damian McKenzie for points scored in this Super Rugby Pacific season 2024.

In football: Man City failed to break down a determined Arsenal defence as a highly-anticipated clash at the top of the Premier League failed to live up to the hype in a 0-0 draw at the Etihad yesterday.

So Liverpool go top, two points ahead of Arsenal and three clear of City with nine games to play.
A share of the spoils preserves City’s unbeaten home run stretching back to November 2022 and ends Arsenal’s eight-match winning run in the Premier League.

But it is the Gunners who will be happier with a point as they prevented Pep Guardiola’s men from scoring at the Etihad for the first time in two years and 58 home games in all competitions.

In boxing: Australia’s Tim Tszyu has been told he will need to fight at least once before securing a world title rematch with Sebastian Fundora – who is now being steered towards Errol Spence Jnr.

In a chaotic aftermath to Sunday’s bloody world title loss, Fundora’s Manager said his fighter will not be heading Down Under for any rematch, and that Tszyu must also now earn his way back into the challenger’s spot with at least one win.
All of which prompted an angry response from No Limit CEO George Rose, who stressed Team Fundora know a rematch clause is in place, has a timeline and can be acted on as soon as Tszyu wants it.
“So good luck trying to get out of it,” Rose said.
In rugby league: Benji Marshall doesn’t care for comparisons to Wests Tigers teams of the past, declaring his club is on the “now train” following a stunning upset win over the Eels.

The Tigers showed grit and determination in defence that hasn’t been seen in years, which set up the thrilling 17-16 win last night.

Marshall was asked if the Tigers would have won the same game last season and the rookie coach didn’t mince his words in response.

“We don’t care about what happened last year or the year before, we’re on the now train and moving forward we need to be better than what we were today for where we want to go, so there’s still a lot of improvement in us.”

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 01 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Easter Monday morning 01 April 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent.

In rugby: The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua sit in 7th place on the Super Rugby Pacific ladder on 13 points, one spot below the Rebels who they play this Friday night in Melbourne – a must-win game for both teams.

No doubt Mick Byrne will be pushing his troops hard for one more big effort, before their bye round next weekend, followed by the Hurricanes and Moana Pasifika at home in a back-to-back run which will be critical in determining where the 2024 Fijian Drua end up.

In football: Son Heung-min’s late winner fired Tottenham to a 2-1 win over Luton but Aston Villa beat Wolves 2-0 to retake fourth place in the Premier League.

Meanwhile Man U thought they had done enough to beat Brentford when Mason Mount scored in the 96th minute, only for the hosts to hit back and claim a well-deserved point.

Chelsea remain in the bottom half of the table after they twice blew a lead at home to 10-man Burnley in a 2-2 draw.

In boxing: An errant elbow from Sebastian Fundora in the second round, proved to be Tim Tszyu’s undoing yesterday afternoon, with a deep cut to the Australian’s head, a critical turning point, as the towering American claimed a split decision victory 116-112, 115-113, 112-116 at T Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, to become the new unified World Champion at 154 pounds.

It was Tszyu’s first defeat of his professional career.

Meanwhile in the undercard, fellow Aussie Michael Zerafa vowed to “steal the show”, that he would upset WBA Middleweight Champion Erislandy Lara to become a world champion.

Instead it was the brutal left hand of the Cuban Lara that stopped the Australian in brutal fashion, sending Zerafa crumbling to the canvas in the second round.

In rugby league: The NZ Warriors overcame an early injury blow to secure a 20-12 win over Kalyn Ponga and his Newcastle Knights in Auckland yesterday, with Roger Tuivasa-Sheck starring in his return to the No.1 jersey for the Kiwis, topping the metres run at 278M.

Panthers flyer and Dally M Rookie of the Year 2023, Sunia Turuva has put himself on the open market after negotiations with Penrith fell flat.

The Panthers reportedly tabled A$350,000 per-season, but Turuva, who is without a deal past 2024, could reportedly field offers worth around A$500,000 by rival clubs.

And that’s a wrap!

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 08 Episode 82 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Sunday morning 31 March 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent.

In rugby: We all know that Aussies are whingers; first the NSW Waratahs Coach complained a week or so ago that some of his players suffered heat stroke at Churchill Park, then the Western Force boss says that some players nearly drowned in Lautoka yesterday after their 13-31 thrashing!

The Kiwi Super Rugby teams never ever complain or blame the weather in Fiji when they lose here.

Meanwhile, former Welsh rugby union star Louis Rees-Zammit, who claimed 31 caps for the Welsh national team in his rugby union career, has signed a deal with the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs through the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program.

In football: A report for 2022–2023 shows the Welsh soccer team, Wrexham United owes its celebrity owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney US$11.3Million.

However, things are looking up for the Club, promoted to the fourth tier of English soccer last year and they may be promoted again.

In boxing: Undefeated Australian boxing superstar, Tim Tszyu said that his 1.97cm US rival, Sebastian Fundora looked “thin” and a completely different animal, declaring: “He’s a giraffe and I’m a tiger.”

The two fighters hit the scales at exactly the same weight: 69.3kg for their fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas this afternoon.

Just for good measure, Tszyu also branded some of the world’s biggest boxing stars who have jetted in for the fight – Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr as “pussies!”

In SportsBiz: The NFL is allowing four more teams to expand into five new overseas markets:
· the Giants with Germany
· the Lions with rights to Austria, Canada, Germany and Switzerland
· the Colts with Austria and Germany
· and the Browns with Nigeria
· Japan and South Korea claimed by the Rams, who also have China
· and Argentina and Colombia claimed by the Dolphins.

As recently as 2022, NFL teams were not allowed to market overseas, with the exception of the Jaguars in the UK.

In rugby league: The Gold Coast Titans scored the first two tries, but then conceded 30 unanswered points at home as the Dolphins ran riot for a 30-14 win.

As a result, Des Hasler is in charge of the first Club in 22 years - and just the third in NRL history - to concede 28 points in eight straight games when their loss to the Dolphins.

He’s gotta be a dead man walking.

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 08 Episode 81 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Saturday morning 30 March 2024.

Happy birthday yesterday Tulia.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent.

In rugby: Top Fiji lawyer and social media celebrity Jon Apted surprisingly rated highly in an informal Teivovo Rugby poll on good Friday where fans were asked to choose a new Flying Fijians Head Coach between Mick Byrne, Senirusi Seruvakula and Apted, since the Fiji Rugby Union boss, Peter Mazey seems unable to make up his mind.

In football: Spanish prosecutors are seeking two-and-a-half years jail plus payment of at least 50,000 euros compensation from disgraced ex-football boss, Luis Rubiales, who is facing trial for kissing Spain midfielder Jenni Hermoso on the lips against her will in Spain’s National Court.

The incident took place after Spain beat England to win the Women’s World Cup final in Australia last year, when Rubiales held Hermoso’s head in both hands and forcibly kissed her on the lips after the game.

In boxing: A blockbuster UFC grudge match between Dricus du Plessis and Israel Adesanya is being discussed for Australia after it was confirmed UFC305 will be held in Perth on Sunday 18 August 2024.

However, Robert Whittaker was a surprise omission after UFC CEO Dana White announced that he will be headlining a Saudi Arabian card against Khamzat Chimaev on Saturday 22 June.

In SportsBiz: Japanese baseball superstar Shohei Ohtani has emphatically denied any direct or indirect betting on baseball, or any other sports, and in turn has drawn a clear line that dramatically raises the stakes for forthcoming investigations.

In a 12-minute press conference where he did not take questions, the normally reserved Ohtani blamed the entire betting saga on his former translator and close friend, Ippei Mizuhara.

"I’m saddened and shocked by the mistake made by someone I trusted,” Ohtani said in a prepared statement read in Japanese at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. “I myself have never bet on anything or asked anyone to do that on my behalf, and I have never gone through a bookmaker to bet on sports."

In rugby league: In a historic moment for the growth of women’s rugby league, NRL Chief Executive Andrew Abdo confirmed the addition of the Bulldogs and NZ Warriors in an expanded NRLW competition that will feature a record 12 teams in 2025.

Meanwhile last night, in another classic Queensland derby, the Broncos secured an impressive 38-12 win over the Cowboys thanks to veteran Adam Reynolds returning from injury in style, using his wide arsenal of kicks to terrify the Cowboys, finishing with three try assists – two off kicks, 657M kicking and 38 possessions.

Penrith flyer Sunia Turuva scored a hat-trick and Dylan Edwards was outstanding at fullback, handing in an early contender for try of the year after a brilliant individual effort.

The Penrith Panthers extending their winning streak to nine straight over the Sydney Roosters with a 22-16 win in an action-packed game at Allianz Stadium.

As we tipped it, the Rabbitohs rippled the Bulldogs at Accor Stadium.

And that’s a wrap!

In football: Jude Bellingham scored at the death to restore English pride yesterday to claim a 2-2 draw after Aston Vila star Youri Tielemans struck twice for Belgium in their final warm up game before squads are announced for Euro 2024 in Germany in June.

Meanwhile, Georgia qualified for Euro 2024 on Tuesday, winning their play-off against Greece 2-4 on penalties after a 0-0 draw at the end of extra time to advance to their first ever major tournament finals.

In boxing: Aussie champ, Tim Tszyu couldn’t help but laugh at Sebastian ‘The Towering Inferno’ Fundora’s camp claiming the American will knock him out, and declared there’s “no need” for a rematch clause to be in place.

Tszyu insists the rematch clause was not bothering him one bit: “Honestly, there’s no need for a rematch clause because he’s getting KO’d.”

In SportsBiz: Over 683,500 people attended men’s and women’s NCAA tournament games during the first and second rounds of March Madness in the US. Here’s the breakdown:

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 08 Episode 79 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Wednesday morning 27 March 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent.

In rugby: The big rumour swirling around the kava bowls in Suva this week is that the Fiji Rugby Union interim Chairman Peter Mazey is going to announce the new Head Coach of the Flying Fijians this week.

And the odds are, with Simon Raiwalui spotted inside the Fijian Drua Coaches box last Saturday at Churchill Park that it will be Mick Byrne.

In football: England football Manager, Gareth Southgate says they have not been distracted by the uproar raging all over England around the multi-coloured cross of Saint George that Nike inserted on their new England kit.

England are preparing to play Brazil in a friendly at Wembley.

In boxing: Has Aussie champ Tim Tszyu bitten off more than he can chew?

If he wins on Sunday against towering American Sebastian Fundora, his promoter will immediately enter into discussions for Tszyu to defend the WBO and WBC titles against world boxing’s pound-for-pound King, American superstar Terence Crawford.

First he has to get through Fundora!

In rugby league: There has been a raft of changes across the NRL in Round 4, many involving star players like Nathan Cleary, Reece Walsh and Mitch Moses all out injured.

Star halfback Adam Reynolds returns in a much-needed boost for the Broncos, while the Eels have picked an exciting youngster in the halves to partner Dylan Brown in the absence of Mitch Moses.
So the NRL Round 4 games this Easter weekend:
Thursday 8pm Roosters vs Panthers at Allianz Stadium
Friday 4.05pm Rabbitohs vs Bulldogs at Accor Stadium
8pm Broncos vs Cowboys at Suncorp Stadium
Saturday 5.30pm Dragons vs Manly at WIN Stadium
7.35pm Titans vs Dolphins, Cbus Super Stadium
Sunday 4.05pm NZ Warriors vs Knights at Go Media Stadium
6.15pm Sharks vs Raiders at PointsBet Stadium

Monday 4pm Eels vs Wests Tigers at CommBank Stadium
In SportsBiz: Nike says it never intended to offend England fans with their new look Saint George’s cross, but did not indicate any plans to change the England kit design.

Of course by now millions of replica England football shirts will be in the supply chain on their way to stores for sale.

And is anyone even watching Skipper Cup and ANZ Marama Challenge games?   In football: The United States Men's national soccer team continued its dominance of the Concacaf Nations League and its regional rivals Mexico, with a 2-0 win and a third title in a row in the competition at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas last night.   Tyler Adams scored a first-half thunderbolt, and Giovanni Reyna added a second goal after the break with a difficult volley to give the US a measure of redemption after an uninspired win over Jamaica in the semifinals of the Nations League last Thursday.   In boxing: Should Aussie champ Tim Tszyu win Sunday’s headliner against towering American Sebastian Fundora, his promoters No Limit will go immediately into discussions to defend the WBO and WBC crowns against world boxing’s pound-for-pound King, American superstar Terence Crawford, who has been secretly pursuing a Tim Tszyu title showdown for at least five months.   Apparently, Crawford even requested a showdown with the WBO Super Welterweight Champion last December.   In rugby league: Inspired by Kalyn Ponga, the Newcastle Knights claimed their first win of the season; 14-12 at McDonald Jones Stadium, after surviving a second-half comeback from a depleted Melbourne Storm side, missing Cameron Munster, Jahrome Hughes and Nelson Asofa-Solomona for their first loss of the year.   In SportsBiz: Jose Mourinho left Serie A side Roma back in January after previously leading the Italian giants to a first European Cup in more than 60 years.   While it still remains to be seen where 'The Special One' will end up next, rumours of a potential third-stint at Chelsea have hit the headlines in recent weeks, especially given their poor form under  Mauricio Pochettino.   Reports in Germany have even suggested Mourinho is already learning German in preparation to take over at the Allianz Arena with Thomas Tuchel leaving at the end of the season.   Early indicators from the bookmakers suggest the former Chelsea boss is wanted by Saudi Pro League clubs.   And that’s a wrap!   Please hit the like and subscribe buttons below if you want to receive more Pasifika sports highlights on Breakfast Bites.   Mahalo and Ka kite; for Teivovorugby.com, I’m Culden Kamea tanking you all too mass for all your love and support.   #TEIVOVORugby  #TEIVOVODigital #TeivovoRugby #TeivovoDigital #rugby #rugby7s #FijiRugby #rugbyunion #rugbyleague #Raka #team #rugbytraining #sports #FRU #Fiji #womensrugby #rugbygirls #wrugby #ladiesrugby #womeninsport  #woman #rugby #rugby7s #FijiRugby #rugbyunion #rugbyleague #fitness #weightlifting #training #team #rugbytraining #sports  #rakavi  #DevelopmentFiji

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 08 Episode 77 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Sunday morning 23 March 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent.

In rugby union: What a finish! What a drop kick! What a star - Kemu Valetini take a bow!

The Fijian Drua shot out of the blocks for a handy halftime lead before the Tahs came charging back in the rain to level it 36 all before their drop kick attempt in sudden death extra time missed.

Then it was the Drua’s turn and incredibly off a terrible pass from his halfback, which forced kemu Valetini to turn back and pull in the ball from above his head, the super sub flyhalf sold an audacious dummy, took one step and stabbed over an incredible drop kick, to win it for the Fijian Drua 39-36 NSW Waratahs and bring the house down.

In other Super Rugby Pacific games yesterday: The Chiefs hung on to edge the Highlanders 21-28 in Hamilton, the Blues bruised the Crusaders 6-26 at Eden Park and the Force flunked the Reds 31-40 in a major upset in Perth.

On Friday night, the Hurricanes hit 50 in ripping the Rebels apart in Palmerston New Zealand and the Brumbies hammered Moana Pasifika scoring 60 in Canberra.

Sign of the times in Fiji rugby? The 48th Marist 7s, featuring the All Blacks 7s, and the Skipper Cup plus the ANZ Marama Challenge all drowned out by the crazy Drua fans in Lautoka.

In football: Politicians and fans in England are outraged with Nike’s new football kit for the Three Lions, where the cross of St. George, always in white and red, has been changed to a red, purple, blue and black cross for the Euro 2024 tournament taking place in June.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak joined in on the fury against Nike: “When it comes to our national flags, we shouldn’t mess with them because they’re a source of pride, identity, who we are and they’re perfect as they are,” he said.

Meanwhile, the German Football Federation is dropping ADIDAS for Nike for their kit from 2027!

In the NRL Multicultural Round: Written off after their poor showing in Canberra last week, Benji Marshall’s Tigers responded in the best way possible to hand the rookie coach his first official win in the NRL as the Wests Tigers stunned the previously unbeaten Sharks 6-32.

The Sydney Roosters celebrated Jared Waerea-Hargreaves 300th game in the best possible way, smashing the Rabbitohs, 6-48 in front of a packed out Allianz Stadium.

The victory was the Roosters’ second-biggest win ever over South Sydney in a rivalry that spans 116 years.

Finally, only in America: Nobody is really working in the US this month! Not with eight basketball games a day, featuring some of the biggest and best basketball colleges in March Madness!

Go the Cougars!

And that’s a wrap!

Originally from Geelong, Johnston was drafted by Melbourne in 2010 but never played a senior AFL game. In the NRL Multicultural Round: The Panthers thrashed a star-less Broncos herd 12-34 as Nathan Cleary repeated his grand final heroics with another masterclass last night.   But instead of saving his brilliant best for the final 20 minutes, Cleary dominated from start to finish in front of a bumper home crowd of 20,089 fans. Brisbane were already without Adam Reynolds and Payne Haas in Penrith and then star fullback Reece Walsh left the game bleeding profusely after just five minutes.
