That Was a Show?

That Was a Show?

By Radio Gizmo: Brynn, Aaron & Barry
The podcast about failed or forgotten sitcoms from the 80s and 90s.

Many sitcoms have stood the test of time and have millions of adoring fans—but those shows were diamonds in the rough. This podcast is not about those diamonds, it's about the rough. Some sitcoms were briefly popular in their time, some were cancelled almost immediately. You probably won't recognize most of these, and you'll say 'that was a show?'

Hosted by Brynn Byrne, Aaron Yeger, and Andrew "Barry" Helmer.

A Radio Gizmo Production.

(Bonus Feature) Backdoor Pilot: From The Nanny to The Chatterbox
In this special bonus feature episode, Brynn & Aaron examine the attempted spinoff of The Nanny called The Chatterbox, which never made it past a failed backdoor pilot. This show could be described as The Nanny (without Fran Drescher) meets Dirty Dancing (without heart) meets Cheers (without jokes) and set in a hair salon in deep Queens. Gloria - A spinoff that’s only *somewhat* In The Family
Gloria WAS a show. This 1983 sitcom was a spin-off of a spin-off from the iconic All In The Family universe...but without Norman Lear and Carroll O'Connor. It does have lots of cute animals and the delightful Sally Struthers. Brynn, Aaron and Barry enter this doomed story world by watching not one but TWO pilots to decide whether it should be a part of the Archie Bunker cannon. Hudson Street - starring Tony Danza as Tony (yes, again!)
Hudson Street WAS a show. Tony Danza plays yet another character named Tony in this story about a divorced police detective in Hoboken, New Jersey. Finally ready to give love another chance, Tony gets set up on a date with newspaper writer Melanie, played by Lori Loughlin. The catch? He’s a tough-on-crime conservative, and she…pretty much just believes in basic civil liberties and due process. In another twist, she lands the city police beat for the New York Times, so now they have to work together! Uh oh… Join Brynn, Aaron and Barry, as they gather evidence for their investigation into why this star-studded sitcom got bumped off after only one season. Free Spirit - or Witch Nanny? Featuring young Alyson Hannigan
Free Spirit WAS a show. A single dad struggles to balance his at-home law practice with raising three kids. When his youngest son casually wishes for someone who’ll pay more attention to him, a witch named Winnie literally drops from the sky into their lives. Dad doesn’t know she’s a supernatural being and hires her as a housekeeper, nanny, mother figure, and possibly a love interest? Yikes is right! Winnie is magic, and can make pretty much anything appear on command. But can she charm her way into this family’s hearts? Obviously yes. Oh, and Alyson Hannigan plays the middle child—and proto-Meg Griffin type—in one of her first roles ever. Brynn, Aaron and Barry conjure up some theories as to why this 1989 trope-fest was quickly made to disappear. Email: thatwasashow@aol.com (Because 90s AOL still exists for some reason!) One Of The Boys starring Dana Carvey, Nathan Lane and Mickey Rooney - with guest Neal E. Fischer
One Of The Boys WAS a show. What do you get when you bring together Dana Carvey in his first starring role, Nathan Lane in his first starring role, music and acting icon Scatman Crothers, and cap it off with the vaudeville stylings of Hollywood legend Mickey Rooney? Turns out not a lot. This 1982 sitcom is about an energetic senior who ditches the nursing home (where he inexplicably lives because he’s in terrific shape) to move in with his college student grandson and roommate. This show even features appearances from the likes of Olympia Dukakis, and Meg Ryan in her second role ever. Brynn, Aaron, Barry, and special guest co-host, Neal E. Fischer of the podcast Triviality, try to figure out why this show got pulled offstage by that giant cane. BadAptation Series: Ferris Bueller starring Jennifer Aniston - with guest Simone Smith
Ferris Bueller WAS a show. The iconic John Hughes classic about high school rebellion from 1986 was reimagined as a sitcom in 1990. Matthew Broderick was replaced by Charlie Schlatter who, much like the Ferris of the film, often breaks the 4th wall to address the audience—only this Ferris is also explicitly aware of the existence of the film, for which he has an apparent disdain. This show also features Jennifer Aniston in her 2nd time at bat. BadAptation Series: Working Girl - The Sitcom (1990) Starring Sandra Bullock
Working Girl WAS a show. It was a successful 1988 Mike Nichols movie first, and then naturally they rebooted it as a sitcom two years later. Both working girls are ambitious, from Staten Island, and bop around Manhattan in white sneakers. One of them has "mall bangs" and one does not. One is Melanie Griffith, and one is a pre-Speed Sandra Bullock. Brynn, Aaron and Barry have a lively discussion about the two women named Tess, and if you can believe it, another woman named Bryn (who is short one n)… GASP! A League of Their Own WAS a show. Everything’s Relative (1999) - Not a mistake, a different show!
Everything’s Relative WAS a show. We’re not joking—there’s another failed sitcom with this title. This one was created by Mitchell Hurwitz, and spoiler, not much happens in it. Everything’s Relative - Starring Jason Alexander before he was George on Seinfeld
Everything’s Relative WAS a show. Before he became known for his iconic role as George Costanza, Jason Alexander made his television comedy debut on Everything’s Relative. This odd-couple style show is about two brothers living in a fancy SoHo loft. Alexander plays the recently divorced older brother Julian Beeby, alongside his construction worker and ‘ladies man’ younger brother Scott. Together they navigate the dating scene under the intensely watchful eye of their mother. Julian runs a product testing lab, and their home is always full of strange concoctions for Scott to stumble upon. Jennifer Slept Here - A Show About “The Most Beautiful Ghost in the World”
Jennifer Slept Here WAS a show. These are the actual lyrics to the theme song: “I just saw the most beautiful ghost in the world—she slept here. I just saw the most outrageous kind of a girl—she lived here. Jennifer, whatchu doin’ to me? In and out of my life you appear. They say the stars don’t shine as bright since you left here. Jennifer slept here; she lived here; she loved here; laughed here and wept here—she slept here. And she never really left here—Jennifer slept here!” Brynn, Aaron & Barry hold a séance to find out why the ghost of a Hollywood starlet is hanging out with a 14 year old boy. Pearl - Starring Rhea Perlman, Malcolm McDowell, Carol Kane and Lucy Liu
Pearl WAS a show. This story of a middle-aged loading dock manager (Perlman) who finally gets to go to university may have only lasted one season, but it certainly had an all star cast! She spars with her pompous and elitist professor Stephen Pynchon (McDowell) because he doesn’t believe a working class student like Pearl has any place in an institution of higher learning. Brynn, Aaron & Barry sign up for this course to learn why this show didn’t earn a passing grade. Email: thatwasashow@aol.com (Because 90s AOL still exists for some reason!) Get a Life - Starring Chris Elliott
Get a Life WAS a show. Before he moved to Schitt’s Creek, Chris Elliot was a 30 year old paper boy who died constantly. You read correctly… anyway, this character is a manchild, a renegade and definitely “unique.” Hollywood heavyweight Charlie Kauffman wrote for this wacky show, and you certainly can’t tell. The Nutt House - A Sitcom by Mel Brooks, Starring the Great Cloris Leachman
The Nutt House WAS a show. Back in 1989 this short-lived sitcom was co-created by Mel Brooks, modeled after the absurd farcical style of comedy popularized by his films like Young Frankenstein and Spaceballs. It’s the story of a struggling old New York hotel named after its owners—the Nutt family. With lavish set design and orchestral score, this single-camera show features an impressive cast including Cloris Leachman in two different roles. The John Larroquette Show - A Show Starring John Larroquette, with Special Guest Stars: 3 out of 4 Golden Girls
The John Larroquette Show WAS a show. Hot on the heels of three Emmy wins for Night Court, Larroquette was the star of this very, very dark tragicomedy about a struggling down and out writer who becomes the night manager of the Crossroads Bus Terminal. The show was retooled after two seasons and then ran for two more. Brynn, Aaron & Barry watch the pilot, and a post-retool episode featuring a reunion of the cast of The Golden Girls in a Sunset Boulevard parody. Sports Night - Aaron Sorkin’s First Show
Sports Night WAS a show. From 1998-2000, this was the first series created by legendary Hollywood screenwriter Aaron Sorkin. The show starred Peter Krause, Felicity Huffman, Josh Charles, Joshua Molina, Sabrina Lloyd and Robert Guillaume as the on and off air talent of a nightly live cable sports show. The show, while well received by critics (and continues to have a following to this day), failed to land with audiences and was cancelled after just two seasons. “Walk and talk” with us as we revisit this sitcom that straddled the lines of comedy, drama, sports, and horribly deployed laugh tracks. It’s Your Move - Starring Teenaged Jason Bateman
It’s Your Move WAS a show. This short-lived predecessor by the creators of Married...with Children co-stars David Garrison and an adolescent Jason Bateman! In what is Bateman’s first lead role, he plays young con-artist Matthew Burton, who runs non-stop grifts. Garrison plays struggling writer Norman Lamb, who moves into the apartment across the hall. Matthew applies his skills of manipulation in constant attempts to keep Norman from dating his widowed mother. Lamb is the only person who sees through Matthew’s schemes, and thus a duel between the two of them ensues. Brynn, Aaron & Barry take their turn at playing this game! A Very Special Episode: Holiday Spectacular!
*Content Warning* Scandalous descriptions of Santa. Do not listen in the vicinity of children... 2020 WAS a year. Brynn, Aaron & Barry celebrate this holiday season with a deep dive into some memorable Christmas episodes from popular 80s and 90s sitcoms—and one surprise Christmas episode from a failed show that they revisit from earlier in the year. They talk about their favourite holiday episode of all time, Seinfeld season 9 episode 10 “The Strike” aka Festivus! This culminates in an airing of grievances, including a rant about the lack of actual Channukah celebration in sitcoms. Happy Whatever! Stark Raving Mad WAS a show. Hi Honey, I’m Home! - The Sitcom That Could Have Inspired Pleasantville
Hi Honey, I’m Home! WAS a show. It’s about what happens when a 50s sitcom family moves in next door to a 90s sitcom family. Those are his mouth pops and slap bass riffs! But Jonathan isn’t joining us to talk about those legendary shows. For our first ever Very Special Episode, we speak with Jonathan about his career in television spanning three decades and over 75 series, including many failed or forgotten sitcoms from the 80s and 90s. AfterMASH - The Aftermath of M*A*S*H
AfterMASH WAS a show. It was a spinoff of M*A*S*H...obviously! The show follows three characters from the original series after they return home from the Korean War. Colonel Sherman T. Potter, Maxwell Klinger and Father John Mulcahy reunite to work together at General Pershing Veteran's Hospital a.k.a. "General General,” located in the fictional town of River Bend, Missouri. Much like the legendary M*A*S*H, AfterMASH attempts to balance comedy with tragedy, and we take a serious look at how it fares in comparison to its predecessor. Trigger Warning: AfterMASH explores serious subject matter including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and poor treatment of veterans. We talk about these themes in our episode.
