We (Dr. Will and Anthony Manuele) have done 109 episodes of The Art of Move Podcast- a show that sought to seek the 'grand unified theory' of human movement and biomechanics. It explored ideas about functional fitness, fascia, feet, and fun stuff that others weren't having in depth conversations about, from the angles that we wanted to hear people talking about, but didn't find anywhere else. We attempted to bridge the gap of the 'in-fighting' in the alternative/progressive functional fitness space, tried to bring the innovative methods of coaches and systems to bigger audiences, and debated, digested, and discussed every angle we could find about the subject. Over the few years we ran the show, we met some incredible people, interviewed industry leaders, and learned a LOT about the human body ourselves. Our movement practices and physicality morphed and evolved as our perspectives did. We're both incredibly grateful for everything that we experienced, for all the connections we made, for all the ways the show helped us personally upgrade, and of course, all the beautiful messages from the audience who were taking the journey with us. As we wrap up this chapter of our personal journeys, we hope you enjoy this final 'wrap up' episode where we discuss what's next for us personally, what projects we're going to be working on, and how you can keep joining us for future conversations about movement and biomech. This isn't the last we'll be collaborating on shows; Anthony will continue to produce longform on the Peak Players Podcast, and Will is livestreaming on many subjects around movement, rehab, biomech and more. We'll be doing collaborative shows together regularly. Thank you dearly to everyone who supported the show, sent us feedback, connected with us personally, gave us suggestions for guests... we love you, and will forever be grateful for the community that grew around this show!

We were joined by one of our most HIGHLY requested guests, Joel Smith of JustFly Performance, and host of the JustFly Performance Podcast.
Our conversation delved deep into the mechanical nuances of movement, and the strategies/philosophies of how to train them therein. With an impressive resume of training professional athletes, and a passion for the biomechanical details of the human body, Joel delighted us with a passionate discussion that went deep in many places.
Elasticity? Progressive overload for functional movement? Body awareness, fascia, and shaking it out? The role of weightlifting and whether or not it can ACTUALLY screw up your movement?
It's all in there.
By the end of this episode, we hope that you're able to walk away with some practical gold nuggets of information that you can inject directly into YOUR training and movement practice.

In this episode of The Art of Move, Anthony Manuele and Dr. William Rajbar discuss the nature of the mind, of the self, what it means to truly be authentic, and much, much more. Does intent implicate being? Does one's image and ego equate to one's character? And beyond that... what does all this have to do with movement? (Hint: everything and nothing) Other topics involve persuasion, coaching, metacognition, and how social structures impact our sense of self. Are you enjoying these types of conversation? In this episode, Will and I discuss the idea of intent as it pertains to being a driver of movement, then follow-up with a whole tirade of questions about where the origin of intent/consciousness actually arises. We explore materialism (the brain being a physical system in which consciousness arises) as well as more abstract ideas like the physicality of our system being more of a 'radio receiver' to a larger field of unified consciousness or source. This is far from a technical episode - more of a philosophical pontification - but we'd love to know your thoughts and where you think our ideas could be more refined by better information (hence why our ideas are 'In-Formation') Hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did... www.instagram.com/anthony.manuele www.instagram.com/theartofmove

In this mind-bending episode of The Art of Move, we dive into the incredible world of quantum and circadian biology with the brilliant Carrie B (@carriebwellness ) As a college athlete, supposedly at the pinnacle of health, Carrie began suffering chronic joint issues and insomnia. After her first child was born, she developed debilitating stomach pain, adrenal fatigue, and brain fog. Armed with a BS in Biology, an MS in Nutrition, and certifications as a personal trainer, massage therapist, and breathing coach, she still couldn't find the root of her issues. That's when she found quantum biology. Now, as an online educator, clinician, and faculty member of the Quantum Biology Collective and Kalamazoo College, Carrie's mission is to teach her clients how to create a healing environment by applying quantum health strategies around light, water, electrons, and mitochondrial support. Given these tools, clients who have spent years trying to improve their health—just as Carrie did—finally experience powerful healing and lasting benefits. In this episode, Dr. Will and I attempt to define fundamental terms that pop up in the fitness industry - we had a laundry list of jargon that we wanted to tackle, however, some of the definitions became so philosophically complex, and the tangents so juicy, that we had to pare it down to three very commonly used terms: -STRENGTH -CONDITIONING -STABILITY These three words are common parlance amongst coaches and figureheads of the S&C world, but very seldom to people take the time to actually define what they MEAN when they say them. For the sake of clarity, in this new series, we attempt to create cohesive, clear definitions of what WE mean by them, contrasted against how the fitness industry might use them, and how the public might perceive them without any prior education. In today's episode, we talk about the idea of fascia being an integral role in EVERYTHING movement related within the human body... but also how it's been appropriated as a marketing term to create a lot of hype without a lot of substantiation. Typically, strength and conditioning (S&C) coaches will dismiss fascia as an important variable (or a variable at all) worth considering. Some functional fitness fellas go whole hog in the other direction and insist that if you're not training your fascial fitness, then you're doomed to deal with destruction of your joints, and are booking a one-way ticket to snap city. As usual, we try to find the nuance in the middle, and also have a little bit of discussion related to: - What biomechanics taught us about life - What we're eating lately (and the nutritional failure that was my carnivore diet experiment) - What is a "flow state" and how do we access it? I was fortunate enough to have a very cool conversation with Professor @bart-kay, one of the most well-studied academics and researchers I've met in the fields of nutrition and exercise science.
A few things we talked about:
- Why carnivore diets make the most sense from an anthropological vantage point
- How metabolism endogenously regulates glycogen/blood sugar levels when you're not eating exogenous carbs
- Why carbohydrates and sugar is actually damaging to your body, and why the "pro-metabolic/Ray Peat enthusiast' crowd is misguided in their beliefs
- How Paul Saladino screwed up his carnivore diet and why he believed he needed to start eating carbs again
- The issues with leaning on academia and 'experts' for discerning truth
- The responsibility as the consumer for understanding what's true and what isn't And many more valuable tidbits.

Dr Anthony Chaffee is an American medical doctor and Neurosurgical resident who, over a span of 20+ years, has researched the optimal nutrition for human performance and health. It is his assertion that most of the so-called chronic diseases we treat as doctors are caused by the food we eat, or don't eat, and can be reversed with dietary changes to a species specific diet.
On this episode, we tackled a lot of different topics ranging from why people in the carnivore diet community started eating carbs (is it too much liver/organ meat causing health issues?), thoughts on the pro-metabolic diet approaches influenced by the works of Dr. Ray Peat, is there an evolutionary basis for eating fruit or carbohydrates at all, and how the hell can you get so jacked eating nothing but meat?
He also gave me advice on how to transition to a carnivore diet (cold turkey baby! Bring on the coffee withdrawals) This is one of my favourite nutrition conversations to date, and I'm incredibly grateful to Dr. Anthony for the generosity with his time. I'm sold Dr! I'm off to eat a #carnivorediet for the next 100 days :)

Driven by the question "WHY", he relentlessly searched for his own answers about the optimal way to train a human body in relationship to its native mechanics. WHY do some athletes get injured? WHY does traditional strength training methods seem to create movement compensations? WHY do functional fitness systems get SOME results, but don't go all the way (to Devon's standards anyways)?
In this episode, Dr. Will and Anthony ask him detailed and nuanced questions, challenge assumptions, and go deep into exploring the mechanical reasoning of the One-of-a-Kind system.

In a recent IG exchange, Karlee Owens (@coach.karlee) made a post saying that hip thrusts were a less-than-optimal/unsafe exercise for training the glutes because of the compressive forces experienced on the spine.
She used a video of Bret Contreras coaching a hip thrust in her video, which caused Bret to respond with his own reaction video, where he dismissed Karlee's ideas as fearmongering and pseudo-biomechanics.
We look at some of Dr. Will's commentary response and go deeper into the rationale and reasoning behind some of his positions, and argue that when it comes to regular function and biomech, glutes do not find themselves CONCENTRICALLY contracted very often.

Liver King's been busted for something that we all knew all along. It's not that he's been taking PED's that's the controversy - it's the idea that he lied about it in order to profit financially from his "larger than life" public image.
In his recent public apology, he claimed that his increase in popularity in the social media/online sphere did not bolster his profits with his supplement companies, etc...
Naudi Aguilar, founder of Functional Patterns issued a challenge to Brian Johnson (Liver King) to release and disclose his P&L (profits and loss) statements to prove unequivocally that he's telling the truth, and not just trading one lie for another. He also makes some great points about how within the fitness industry, people duping gullible consumers is not a new act, and has been going on for ages (and isn't showing signs of slowing down).
We break it down in philosophical, ethical, political, and economic terms, offer our perspective on the ethics, and react live to the video where Naudi issued his challenge to Liver King... let us know your thoughts!

On today's episode, we talk about a few nuances of foot positioning in mechanics of gait; while some camps like GOATA and OKF insist that feet-straight positions are essential for efficient energy transfer, observation about elite sprinters and athletic frames aren't always conducive to that idea.

This is an incredibly important episode of The Art of Move Podcast - it signifies a turning point in our conversations, a new approach to understanding ourselves as both physical and conscious entities.
Our guest today was the exceptional Gil Hedley, PHD
Gil Hedley, Ph.D., has been teaching "integral anatomy" in the lab, lecture hall and online at www.gilhedley.com since 1995 to professionals from the whole range of healing and fitness modalities. He is the producer of The Integral Anatomy Series, the author of several books of poetry and prose, and has now created the "Anatomy from A to Z" project, a comprehensive 200+ hour on-camera tour of human anatomy based on his integral, whole body approach, all available online at www.gilhedley.com.
Gil is based in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he presides over the Board of Directors of the Institute for Anatomical Research, a 501(C)(3) non-profit corporation focused on expanding the study of integral anatomy through cadaver studies.
Beyond that, we found Gil to be an incredibly tapped in human being who has explored incredible nuances of the human being and how it exists as a conscious and physical entity.

In today's episode, we discuss how certain paradigms based on assumed first principles determine the questions asked WITHIN science, and how those paradigms can be challenged and broken to create a scientific revolution. We believe that much of movement research right now is operating on flawed first principles of biomechanics, and therefore, most research (even good research) will fail to account for relevant variables. This episode is a 30,000 foot view of a series we've started on a critique of Academia/Research-Based/"Studies and data only" as a philosophical approach to acquiring truth about movement and biomechanics. We covered many topics including how science that only looks at limited variables can get carried away and turned into 'narratives' which data starts to fit itself to.
We'll be covering many aspects of how to think more critically/freely/integrally when it comes to investigating your movement practice, the truths behind training, and more.
David Weck also joined us and discusses personal stories of how his ideas about "Head Over Foot Locomotion" have been denied by the subscribers of the pedestrian theory of locomotion, and how a single study undertaken by Eric Cressey was extrapolated into years of Bosu Ball bashing and set back people exploring the utility of unstable surface training for far too long.

We were joined today by the founder of Functional Patterns, Naudi Aguilar.
This episode was originally going to be a continuation of Episode 14 (The Limitations of Science and Anecdote), however, ended up being something much, much more special. We hope you enjoy this conversation, as it was intellectually stimulating, provocative, and full of unique perspective.
From Naudi: I’m the founder of Functional Patterns. I’ve been in the fitness industry for over 15 years and my aim since the beginning has been to map out what makes people move great without pain. In the process of codifying mechanics for humans, I’ve come to realize that correct biomechanics may very well bring about the fountain of youth and vitality people have been looking for. I’ve worked with a wide array of body types, as well as people from different areas of the health and fitness sector.
This includes people with neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy, post car accident victims, people dealing with chronic pain from disc herniations, scoliosis cases and elite athletes. I have several thousand people, including health care professionals (Physical Therapists, Osteopaths, Chiropractors, Personal Trainers), certified in my method on every continent except Antarctica (working on it). We are one of the fastest growing companies in the field because our results are proving to be the best in the business. Visible results are what gives FP its competitive edge in the field.
The outcomes are repeatable and are being reproduced by FP practitioners all over the globe. While many in the field aim to look different or sound smart, we focus on getting the job done so people can actually evolve and become the best version of themselves.
Functional Patterns takes the guesswork out of taking care of your body."

He developed a ground up approach, and rather than focusing on muscles, he started to train his feet and fascial network. With over 10 years of trial and error, he developed the HYPERARCH Fascial Training system, which he'll discuss with us here on the show.

A decentralized approach sees human biomechanics modalities as a sensory technology that serves human beings to be more independent and empowered for their own self-interests, while not identifying with any of the philosophies of their creators. Trusting direct experience and testing everything for oneself first and foremost, especially with sensory experience, it denies any authority on biomechanics outside of ourselves and always emphasizes the supremacy of the Experiencer and what is useful to us in our studies of sensory technologies. "Currently I work as a chiropractor in Banff Alberta, however my passion is human movement/biomechanics. I put theory into TEST to find out what works and what doesn’t. The Bruce Lee quote “take whats useful and disregard the rest” is how I find movement truth. The ultimate truth is in the movement not the theory, it has to work in reality.
Now Running/Gait mechanics and martial arts (especially boxing) is how I test truth in movement; theory is always put to the test!
From my teenage years into my late 20s, I spent significant time within mainstream fitness practices such as Crossfit, powerlifting, Olympic lifting, gymnastics, and bodybuilding, not in that particular order.
I have also spent time playing soccer, boxing, skiing amongst other sports. Having stacked many injuries in my teens/20s from improper training, I was led on a journey into chiropractic and sports injuries. I have worked with 1000s of injured patients in 8 years of chiropractic practice and have seen many injuries in the gym as a former Crossfit coach for 5 years.
I've now spent 1000's of hours learning and practicing systems such as Functional Range Conditioning, Weckmethod and Goata. Goata has my interest at the moment, as I see it as a platform for a new Paradigm in movement. I believe we (Experts) are using incorrect maps of movement, therefore injuries are prevalent in sport and life. I will always test and retest in my own theories in real movement.
