Metro Champs! Caps MVP?

Metro Champs! Caps MVP?

Thanks for checking in, the Capitals have won the Metro Division for the 4th consecutive year! Subir, Drew, and Amanda start the episode by giving an in-depth analysis of the Caps' past 3 games (Tampa Bay, Florida, Montreal). The game vs TBL was an exact example of playoff Caps hockey - the type of play which can make a team like TBL nervous if we see them again in the ECF. Not to mention Ovi scored his 50th and 51st goal of the season in this game...

After talking about the most recent game, vs Montreal, we dive into a discussion about how Burakovsky has played recently and if there is a small chance that the Caps might actually re-sign him this offseason. It seemed like foregone conclusion that he would be gone after this season, but could a strong playoff performance force the Caps to keep him? You have to consider some other guys that Caps will want to retain like Connolly and Vrana as well.

The second half of the show is pretty fun because all three of us give our choice for Capitals MVP and Most Improved Player. Who would you pick for each award? Enjoy!

Ep24- Playoffs Clinched!

Ep24- Playoffs Clinched!

Hello there, thanks for checking into our new episode! The Capitals have officially clinched a playoff berth! Drew and Subir recap the last 4 Caps' game (Minnesota, Philadelphia, Carolina x2) where we were surprised by the loss to the Wild but were happy about the next 3 games. Defeating Carolina twice in regulation was really impressive and could be a Round 1 preview.

While the Caps' powerplay continues to run cold, their 5v5 execution and defensive play has been outstanding. Holtby has really started to play at his top level and has bailed the team out a couple times which we are used to.

After the 4-game recap, Drew and Subir go back to their pre-season predictions of teams that we thought would impress us this year and be a surprise team. Listen in to see if we were accurate with our predictions!

Then we look ahead to possible Round 1 opponents and talk about who we think would be the most favorable matchup for the Caps; would it be Carolina, Montreal, or Columbus?

The regular season is winding down and we can't wait for the playoffs to begin. Thanks for tuning in!

Ep23- Lightning Struck Twice

Ep23- Lightning Struck Twice

Hi there! Thanks for checking out this episode of The DC Powerplay. The gang reviews the Caps' previous 3 games where they fell to the Tampa Bay Lightning twice. Subir, Drew, and Amanda go in-depth about these two games and of course the victory over the NJ Devils which was sandwiched in-between.

The Lightning are by far the best regular season team this year, but our defending Cup Champs played them very tough in both of these games this past week. Hear about our positives and negatives from these games, as we give specific examples from the match-ups that made us proud but also some instances where we expected better.

After that, we talk about Kempny's leg injury that may cost him "significant time" as a Capitals reporter put it. How will his absence effect the team and specifically the defensive pairings? How important was the acquisition of Nick Jensen now that Kempny will miss time?

Finally, we play a bit of a prediction game where we ask: How many goals will Ovi end up with? Will there be any alterations to the playoff line combinations? Will Orlov ever be scratched?

Thanks for tuning in, enjoy!

Ep22- Winners of 15 of last 21

Ep22- Winners of 15 of last 21

The Caps have been piling up the wins lately, despite their loss to Pittsburgh. Subir and Drew recap the last 4 games for the Caps (New Jersey, Winnipeg, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia). Production is coming from all lines, and the balance of this Caps team is a factor in many of their wins. After talking about their week of games where the Caps went 3-1, we get into a discussion about what the Caps have done well and what still needs improvement.

The Capitals are still taking way too many penalties, but the PK unit has been outstanding. Still, once you play a true Cup contending team, taking 5-6 penalties in one game will kill you.

Some good news, though, is that the Caps are now flourishing with 20+ goal scorers. Vrana and Wilson reached that mark this past week, and guys like Backstrom and Connolly will soon be joining that group as well.

We also discuss the possibility of DSP getting back into the pro lineup because he has been playing very well down at Hershey. Subir and Drew look ahead to the next couple games for the Caps, and point out that we play the TB Lightning 3 times before the regular season is done.

How many points do you think it will take to win the Metro Division? Listen to the podcast to hear our prediction!

Ep21- Ramping Up For The Playoffs!

Ep21- Ramping Up For The Playoffs!

The Caps are on a 5-game win streak! Listen as Subir and Amanda break down the Capitals' previous 3 games (NY Islanders, NY Rangers, Philadelphia) and hear about the crazy goals and calls/non-calls that occurred during these games.

Both Ovechkin and Holtby reached some really impressive NHL records and we remind everyone to never take for granted the greatness you see on the ice, especially #8. We also got to see Hagelin's first goal and Jensen's first point in Caps' uniform. Both of us have noticed that the Capitals' defense has started rounding into form and the team in general is really ramping up their play close to what we saw in last year's playoff run.

Then we discuss the current playoff outlook and which team we would prefer the Caps to play in Round 1. How would you feel if Caps played Penguins in the first round? Both of us agree that the NHL should adopt the 1-8 seeding playoff bracket like the NBA does. Enjoy!

Ep20- Would You Boo?

Ep20- Would You Boo?

Hi there listeners, thanks for tuning in to our twentieth episode! Subir, Drew, and Amanda dive into the 3 game recap (Buffalo, NY Rangers, Ottawa) and discuss how the Capitals played during this stretch. Slow starts are occurring too often and we talk about how this could doom the Caps against more playoff-caliber teams.

Then we discuss the Hagelin and Jensen trades that the Caps made before finalizing our thoughts about trades around the League in general. We recognize that the Columbus Blue Jackets are going "all-in" for this playoff run- if they make the playoffs that is...How big of a disappointment would it be for them to miss the playoffs or be out in Round 1 after all the moves they made?

Finally, the Bryce Harper news and John Tavares playing at the Islanders got us talking about "boo-ing" players. Would you "boo" Tavares if you were an Islanders fan? Then, our Harper discussion may have you thinking we turned into a Nationals Podcast but rest assured we are just all DC sport fans at heart and couldn't resist giving our thoughts on his signing with the Phillies.

Caps have a three game road trip coming up, starting with the Islanders on Friday night. Let's get some more wins!

Ep19- Hello Hagelin!

Ep19- Hello Hagelin!

Hi there and thanks for tuning in to our latest episode. Subir and Drew recap the last four Caps game where our team played quite well (San Jose, Anaheim, LA Kings, and Toronto). The Capitals have been getting some decent production throughout the lineup, especially the hot third line.

The biggest news though is that the Caps have traded for Carl Hagelin, previously of the LA Kings. We talk about this trade and what it means for the Caps going forward.

What can we expect from Hagelin and what line does he fit on? Also, are the Caps done making moves before the deadline? Drew doesn’t think so and he gives some insight into possible teams and players the Caps could dance with. Enjoy!

Ep18- They Love Me, They Love Me Not

Ep18- They Love Me, They Love Me Not

Hello and welcome into a Valentine's Day episode of The DC Powerplay! There are some things to love about the Caps recently but also a lot left to be desired...

Subir, Drew, and Amanda review the Capitals last 3 games (Florida, LA Kings, Columbus) then talk about some Caps players that have heated up and where we think Washington will end up in the standings at end of regular season.

But we also discuss the Capitals penalty woes and how they can fix their problem. Did you know that the Caps are the most penalized team in the League? The hope for a championship repeat will have no chance if these bad habits continue.

We hope the Caps come home from their road trip with some wins under their belt. Thanks again for tuning in, enjoy!

Ep16- Much Needed Break

Ep16- Much Needed Break

Hello there, thanks for checking out another episode of The DC Powerplay. The Caps enter the All Star Break on a dreadful 7-game losing streak. These are uncharted waters for this team as they never let their losing streaks reach these levels.

Subir, Drew, and Amanda recap the 4 games (Islanders, Chicago, San Jose, Toronto). What can we attribute this poor play to, and are there any positives to take away?

How much blame to you give to coaching, or is it simply about execution and tired legs? We all give our takes on these questions and also dive into some listener questions which we got from Twitter.

We hope the Caps find their game coming out the ASG and bye week, enjoy!

Ep15- "If Playoffs Started Today"

Ep15- "If Playoffs Started Today"

Hello there, welcome in to the newest edition of The DC Powerplay. The crew has some games to discuss for the Caps where they played quite poorly. Scoring and defense were an issue during their 3 game stretch vs Columbus, St. Louis, and Nashville.

After going over these games, Subir, Drew, and Amanda talk about the current playoff matchups as if the playoffs were about to start. We talk about the interesting story lines and predict who would win each series.

Which current playoff matchup has the best chance to go 7 games, and which matchup has the most potential for a sweep?

Thanks for listening in!

Ep14- Recipe for Winning?

Ep14- Recipe for Winning?

Hello everyone, thanks for checking out our newest episode. Subir, Drew, and Amanda are happy to discuss a 3 game winning streak. While the Caps are winning, they still aren't playing too perfect of a game.

How are the Capitals winning while being terrible at the faceoff dot, having an ice-cold powerplay, and taking too many penalties?

We talk about this while going over the 4 game recap vs Dallas, Detroit, Philadelphia, and Boston.

There was no way we were going to complete this podcast without mentioning how good Vrana and Wilson have been, the young stars on this team.

Also, the talks about Bura being traded have started to pick up steam around the League and we talk about how the Caps don't seem to need his services anymore.

Enjoy!

Ep13- Welcome to 2019

Happy New Year and welcome to our first 2019 Podcast! Subir, Drew, and Amanda regroup after a Holiday break. The crew begins with a recap of the Caps previous 3 games (Carolina, Ottawa, Nashville). Madison Bowey and Tyler Lewington (Gordie Howe hat trick) get their first career goals!

Then we talk about Ovi finally ending his goal drought and his decision to skip this year's All Star Game. Do you enjoy the ASG and what improvements would you make?

Before discussing the red hot Metro Division, the three of us discuss the World Juniors tournament currently taking place and specifically the Caps prospects that are playing.

We hope the Caps start 2019 on a high note, please enjoy!

Ep12- Room for Improvement

Ep12- Room for Improvement

Thanks for checking into our 12th episode! The Caps concluded their most recent 3-game set with two shootout victories and a regulation loss. Listen to Subir, Drew, and Amanda as they recap the three very close matchups vs Carolina, Buffalo, and Pittsburgh.

After the recaps, we discuss the powerless powerplay and what specific adjustments the Caps can try to shake themselves out of a rut. This leads us into some thoughts about shaking up the Caps lines and if they should go back to their playoff lineups.

Like our last podcast, we bring up Bura's continuous healthy scratches and who he could currently replace on this deep Capitals roster. Drew points out that some teams have shown interest in Bura and that the Caps could possibly make a move.

If the Caps decided to make some moves before the trade deadline, what kind of player or position would you be interested in? We discuss some options.

Before previewing the Caps upcoming 3 games, the three of us talk about sports betting becoming legal in DC and provide our own over/under about how many penalties the Caps will take in this next week!

Ep11- All About Ovi

Ep11- All About Ovi

Welcome! Drew, Subir, and Amanda are happy to discuss a 3 game winning streak for the Caps. Hear about how the Caps went undefeated on their 3 game stretch vs Arizona, Columbus, and Detroit.

Did you know that the Caps had a 12-0 goal streak throughout those 3 games? Could Burakovsky be looking at more healthy scratches?

Then, we immerse ourselves in a lengthy and overdue conversation about The Russian Machine: Alex Ovechkin. He is on an incredible goal and point-pace this year, absolutely putting Subir's pre-season prediction to shame.

All of us are almost out of adjectives to describe the Caps greatest player ever. It leads us to a discussion about how Ovechkin is on the DC Sports and Capitals "Mt. Rushmore" and what other players we would include.

Which Ovechkin pose would you choose when we finally get a statue of him built at the arena? We share some ideas before looking ahead to the Caps next 3 games vs Carolina, Buffalo, and Pittsburgh.

Enjoy!
