Carly Faye Loewenthal is a master level NLP certified Life Coach, and a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner. In this episode we explore the many different ways our thoughts, beliefs and emotions influence our physical health. Why You Aren't Getting Results
To me, there is nothing more frustrating than applying strategy after strategy, supplement and nutrition protocol after protocol, taking action, and being no closer to the results than when I started... and often deeper in the hole than where I started, too. That was where I was in my health, career and business; looking for strategies and trying to find that one coach, program or person that finally had what I needed in order to turn things around.
I learned though, that I was looking at it all wrong. In today's episode, I discuss why the protocols and strategies are important, but they aren't the whole picture. You'll learn where everyone puts their focus and they often miss a very critical aspect that builds the foundation to have those protocols and strategies work.

Are Your Gut Symptoms Trying To Tell You Something?
As "gut" symptoms are becoming more prevalent and athlete's are learning more about their gut, it's putting a highlight on "normal" symptoms that actually aren't "normal". These symptoms might look like bloating, cramping, pain, constipation, loose stools/diarrhea - various diagnoses, inflammation etc. etc. We always want to look deeper into the environment and what's causing the issues of course like imbalances in gut bacteria, yeast presence, prebiotics/short chain fatty acids/butyrate levels, immune system function, protein/fat absorption and breakdown and more. But what happens when you've done all that and you still have symptoms... sometimes? And it's unclear now what's causing it?
There are many ways that the gut and brain communicate. They are centers for many functions within the body. If you've ever felt nervous, where do you often experience that emotion? Many people will say the gut/stomach. If you get anxious or stressed, do you feel a tightening in your abdomen? Have you considered, just based on this example, that when (if) you experience symptoms in your gut, that your gut might be trying to tell you something? But because we don't think about the body in this way, is it possible you're missing a very critical cue that could have a positive impact on your symptoms moving forward? Today's episode dives into this topic and more!

You don’t have to stop training for sport post-menopause.
Peri-menopause and post-menopause can be challenging times for women because as hormones change our experience in our body also changes along with it. This often means we need to adjust aspects of our lifestyle like how we train and work out, to nutrition, to stress management, supplements, etc. to meet our new needs.
This first often starts with awareness as far as what is changing, which then can lead to making empowered decisions that work best for you. Dr Mandy Marziaz DC is with us on the podcast today and she shares so many important and incredibly helpful tips on what’s happening in the body through peri and post-menopause for athletic women.
You can absolutely continue to train and thrive past menopause!

Have you ever felt like giving up even though you absolutely love the sport and what you do?
Have you experienced fatigue, frustration, feeling defeated because you just can’t figure out how to overcome or reach that next level? On today’s episode we dive into where energy comes from and why it’s critical that we look at the GI tract and the Mitochondria when it comes to health AND sports performance.
Research has just barely scratched the surface looking into how the two major performance factors work together and today we’re covering a small portion of it as it relates to athletic performance.
In this episode we also talk about different aspects of your mindset and neurology that can hold you back from really achieving your goal (whether that’s in health, performance or both).

Why is strength training so important for runners?
Strength is resiliency, stability and power. It's all the things that you need to get through your stride. And if we think about the biochemical forces in our body, with running, they are huge. We can build some strength through running, the cardiovascular gains tend to happen faster than our muscular fitness gains.
Strength training can help capitalize those cardiovascular gains faster, like help that lagging end of the system build up so that you can get more out of all the gains you are making with your running program and progressing your mileage there and push it along with the strength training.
"More running doesn't always mean better running."
Improve your speed by hitting the weights. Strength training is an essential supplement to a runner's roadwork because it strengthens muscles and joints, which can improve race times and decrease injury risk. If you want to perform at your full potential, you need to take a comprehensive approach to running.
Tune in to learn why strength training is important to runners and what Alison and I think about it.

How to improve your golf swing and game without “hitting more balls”
It’s really common for any athlete to want to work on technique and do MORE to improve.
For example, hit more golf balls, play more games of golf, work on technique, change equipment, get fancy data from improving technology etc. But did you know that you can capitalize on that training you are already doing to see improvements in your performance (like bigger back swing, distance, feeling strong to the end of the game) that has “virtually nothing” to do with skills?
In this episode we discuss how you can improve pain, aches, fatigue and your performance overall by addressing a few key factors that many athletes, including golfers, tend to neglect or miss. Tune in to learn what those are and make sure to catch why Dr Joe and I aren’t big fans of hydration drinks like gatorade.

Training Without A Specific Strength Program Is The Worst Way To Prevent ACL Tears In Female Athletes
Did you know there are a few non-contact injuries that are more prevalent in female athletes? Some of these include ACL tears in the knee and concussions. There are a few reasons why this happens, but one of the main reasons is because the reality is that most female athletes don’t get access to strength training early enough in their life and sport.
Today Dr Melissa MacDonald joins me on the podcast and we dive into several reasons why these injuries occur more often with female athletes and, most importantly, ways you can work to prevent them. Ready to go from feeling Fit and Fatigued to a Fit and Healthy Elite Athlete?

Achieving Peak Athletic Performance Is An Inflammatory Endeavor
A very common misconception around sports is that athletes are at their peak health of their life when they’re also achieving peak performance.
We know from many studies and tests that when athletes are at their peak, they are often also the most nutrient deficient and inflamed. This is just one reason why completely preventable injuries and illnesses are prevalent the deeper into the season they get.
In this episode we cover the most common drivers of chronic inflammation in athletes, some of which might surprise you. The first step is awareness and then I cover what steps you can take to minimize inflammation, drivers of chronic inflammation, and how to support your body through training and competition season to reduce your risk of injury and illness.

When you "just can't figure out the 4th discipline" in triathlon
Have you ever struggled with sports nutrition during training or events? Or have you been struggling with fatigue daily or have noticed that your energy just isn’t the same during workouts as it has been in the past?
If you’re like many athletes I work with, you’re probably training 10+ hours a week and you might be taking a few supplements, trying to eat enough in your day because you know you need to, but you still are experiencing low energy in your workouts over the last 3 months, and no matter what you try you’re still not getting better. In this episode we cover:
- How you can dial in your nutrition and fueling to leave frustrations with the "4th discipline" in the past
- What specific patterns to become aware of around fueling and nutrition, which will help you create a strategy to overcome them
- How to combine both health AND performance, especially if you have heard, or ever thought that peak performance comes at a sacrifice to your health
- And if you can't find time to work on your nutrition or health, maybe we just need to look at this with a different perspective If you'd like to grab the free guide I mentioned on how to build a foundation for a healthy body and peak performance, head to drkirstin.com/finishstrong In the guide, we cover the pillars to creating that foundation including: gut health, inflammation, micronutrient deficiencies and more.
The first step to improving is awareness and you can start that today.

Losing sleep because of stress, anxiety or jet lag? How to improve your sleep for athletes.
If you’ve struggled with sleep or sacrificed sleep to fit more in your day, then you know what it feels like to be slow to wake up, need a mega dose of coffee to get going, or feel the energy drain towards the end of the day. You may also feel like your energy in your training/workouts is low or it takes you FOREVER to get over soreness from workouts. Maybe it takes you a million years to fall asleep, or you wake up multiple times in the night and struggle to get back to sleep.
And wouldn’t it be nice to get really good quality sleep during the hours that you have to sleep? If you’re a fit but fatigued athlete, what’s caused you to feel run down, tired, and experiencing symptoms including aches and pains is rooted in the foundation of your health and the way to turn it around is by focusing on the ENTIRE system.
In this episode we are going to go beyond nutrition and talk about how to become a fit and healthy athlete that thrives and experiences peak performance by focusing on 1 important piece of the puzzle, which is sleep.
I’m giving you 2 specific things you can do tonight that can help you sleep - and a few things you’re doing that you may want to STOP doing that are likely affecting your sleep quality as well.
And for those of you that travel a lot for business and/or your sport - I’ve got a few tips in here as well to help you with jet lag so that you can perform at your best even when you’re traveling.

From GI Distress to Gut Symptom Free (Here’s what I did)
You might know someone, or be that someone, who has dealt with GI distress in the past. And if you have experienced gut symptoms on race day or in training - oh you know the ever so common “runners trot”- then you know how frustrating and also embarrassing it can be if you don’t make it to the bathroom in time… or have to spend each aid station in the bathroom.
It's also uncomfortable. You know that gurgly feeling in your gut and then your heart sinks. Sometimes it hurts, other times it just messes with your head. Should I continue pushing my pace? Maybe I should slow down. Gosh I wish this wasn't happening. What did I mess up this time? I've been there and it sucks.
But there's a lot you can do to prevent it. Most people look towards fueling, day prior nutrition etc. but they miss some very key components when it comes to building a foundation of good gut health that sets you up for success. Not only do you overcome GI distress AND you get really solid gut health that can also help you with your performance (like achieving that next 9-11 hour Ironman).
If you aren’t a runner but know that gut health is something that’s important and you’re ready to learn more, check out this episode on gut health for sports performance.

A Micronutrient Strategy That Works For High Performers And Athletes
With the popularity of labs and micronutrient gaps sky-rocketing in the athletic world, you might be thinking that supplementation is the only way to fill in gaps AND is necessary for you to be both healthy and perform well. And I totally get it because micronutrients are becoming more popular. I’ve spoken on many podcasts and there are a lot of people and labs that are promoting micronutrient status which is awesome. But… supplementation may be limiting your ability to get stronger, faster… and it may even be causing a bit of toxicity. In this episode I’m diving into micronutrients and showing you the what’s, why’s, how’s and when’s so that you can be confident in your health and supplement (or lack of) routine.
